Chapter 10 - Tongue Action

I groaned as I tried finding something to wear. Something not to casual but not too formal. I didn't want him thinking I was actually serious about this date.

I tugged some summer dresses off of hangers and found a simple one, one perfect for the group date.

No, it wasn't with Colton.

When I told Anna I was going on a group date she immediately fist pumped the air and started singing about "Folton".

Let's just say she was sourly disappointed when she found out my date would be Evan.

Mia was going to go on her official first date with Kyle this weekend, to the movies or something like that. Apparently she wanted Evan and I to casually show up to the same movie so she wouldn't be alone. As much as having a boyfriend had opened her up, she was still the introverted internet fanatic that she had been 3 years ago. Evan, of course, agreed. Although he obviously had some hatred toward Kyle, he still cared about Mia and wanted to support her. To be honest, I also thought he believed he still had some chance to be with her, and hey, if things didn't work out between her and Kyle, he would be right there for Mia. With Eva having agreed, I couldn't turn down Mia.

I wasn't sure what I should be feeling right now. Should I feel hurt because Mia used me to make herself feel more comfortable at her first date? Or should I be happy to help her because she's one of the two real friends I actually have?

I slid the dress on and put my hair into a ponytail, finishing off the look with a pair of flats. I took a quick glance toward my window, which had the curtains open to let in some natural light.

I couldn't see anything besides the brick of Colton's house and his window, which by the way, had its' curtains drawn.Ever since Anna had told him about our families' trip to the lake house over Thanksgiving, he had kept them closed. I suppose he didn't want to face the reality that yes- we would actually have to spend a whole weekend together.

Friday, when we had our Romeo and Juliet play practice, I had been surprised that he hadn't even bothered in bringing it up. I had sort of been relying on him asking me about it so I could then, in turn ask him about what happened when I left. I had the whole thing planned out, but it had been flawed because the whole thing had rested on Colton.

"Finn! Your friend Evan is here!" Kim called up the stairs.

I stole one last glance at Colton's closed window before turning off my lights and hurrying down the stairs. Evan waited outside the door, talking to Kim. He smiled when I came down and looked toward me , "Hi Finnly" he said.

I smiled back at him reassuringly, "Hi Evan" I said. I still couldn't believe Mia had made this poor kid go to her date.

"Now Finnly, make sure you're home before dinner! We're all going out tonight" Kim said.

I nodded, "Yeah, sure thing, Kim" I said.

Kim smiled, "And don't worry about Mia, she'll come around" she said to Evan, before making her way back to the kitchen.

"You told her?" I asked Evan, as we exited the front door and made our way to his car.

Evan shrugged, "Yeah, her first question was if we were dating or not, so I just told her the whole ordeal" he said honestly.

I just nodded; there wasn't much else to say.

~*~*~*~

"Finnly! Evan! It's so nice to see you here!"

I glanced briefly over at Evan, who was staring at the ground, before responding to Mia, "Yeah, Evan and I thought it would be fun to see a movie today" I said nonchalantly.

Mia gave us a huge grin, "Oh! Well Kyle and I are seeing a movie too!" she said, lacing her fingers with his.

My eyes immediately darted to Evan to make sure he was ok.

Surprisingly, he was exceptionally calm.

"Nice to meet you, Kyle" he said, holding his hand out.

Kyle shook it, "Yeah, nice to meet you guys" he said.

Kyle seemed nice enough, it's not like I disapproved of whom Mia was dating, it was just the way she dated him that bothered me. Everything had to be about them. You couldn't bring up anything non-Kyle related without it somehow tying back to Kyle. I don't know if it bothered me just because I'd never actually had a boyfriend in the 17 years I had been alive or because it was just god awful annoying.

I nodded, "Yeah, it's a pleasure" I said, offering him a small smile.

Mia smiled at Evan and I, "You guys should see the movie we're planning on seeing!" she said.

"That was the plan" I said, giving her a pretty believable excited expression.

Kyle smiled, "Yeah, we're seeing the horror movie playing." He said.

Oh. How cliché.

"Ok, we'll get our tickets and meet you in the theater" I said.

Mia just nodded and while they were walking away, tossed a grin over her shoulder, mouthing 'thank you'.

I gave her a small one sided smile before turning to Evan, "Are you sure you want to do this. I mean it's not too late to leave" I said.

Evan shrugged, "It's not like it would've worked out with her anyway" he said, "And as cheesy as it sounds, I'm glad she's happy." He said.

I nodded, "Don't think that way" I said, "You're a great guy, and if she can't see that then it's her loss" I said.

Evan gave me a smile, "Thanks Finnly."

I nodded, "Anytime" I said.

I bought the tickets and ordered a large popcorn. Maybe that would be enough to drown our feelings in.

"And same with Colton" Evan continued, while we stood waiting for the popcorn to pop.

"What?" I asked, spinning to face him.

"You like him right?" Evan asked.

I felt my cheeks heat up, "W-what? No!"

Evan just laughed, "You're a horrible liar" he said, "What I wanted to say is, it's his loss if he doesn't see how good of a person you are" he said.

I smiled, "thanks" I said.

After that we grabbed our popcorn and made our way to the theater.

It wasn't as awkward between us now. Both Evan and I were undeniably awkward people, but now I suppose we had something in common that we could relate to with one another.

It was a good feeling.

Not that we both had problems but because there was finally someone that understood.

~*~*~*~

Half way through the movie, the entire theater was empty except for Mia, Kyle, Evan, and I. It's not that the movie was super scary or anything, it was just horrible. I could see why everyone else had left. You have your good horror movies, with good effects and a good plot and genuine actors, and then you have horror movies that just don't. And this was one of those movies that just didn't.

I glanced over to my right where Kyle and Mia were sitting. They were holding hands and had put up the arm rest to sit closer to each other.

I started getting the idea that going to a horror movie was just so they could have an excuse to hold hands and Kyle could comfort her.

No. Don't do it! Hasn't your mother ever told you not to open the door to strangers?

The girl in the movie was apparently supposed to be a detective investigating the case at the house where all of the killing was taking place.

You would think that she would be a little smarter to know not to open the door.

"This is so stupid" Evan said.

I turned to my left, "The movie or Kyle and Mia?" I asked a small smile on my lips.

Evan looked past me at Kyle and Mia, who apparently thought the climax of the movie, would be the best time to start making out.

Evan quickly looked back at me, "Well I wasn't even paying attention to them until you brought them up" he said.

"Oh...sorry" I said, feeling bad I had to let him see that.

Did Mia seriously have no consideration for Evan? It's like she strung him along to this date just so he could witness her and Kyle together so he would stop liking her.

Shit. What if that really is why she really invited us?

"And I was talking about the movie" Evan said, turning his attention back to the screen.

I gave him a weak smile, "Yeah, well it is stupid" I said, not really sure what else to say.

"So, are you excited?" Evan asked in a hushed whisper, his eyes still glued to the screen.

"To see the dumb as hell blonde bimbo get killed by the guy with the saw? Of course" I said.

Evan rolled his eyes and looked toward me, "Not that, although yes, I'm excited to see that too. I meant about going to the lake house with Colton's family" he said.

"I haven't really thought about it much after I found out" I said.

Evan nodded, "I'm sorry that I told you by the way, it wasn't my place to tell you" he said.

I shrugged, "No, thanks for telling me" I said, "I would've found out lat-"

"Shh! We're trying to watch the movie!" Mia said in a loud whisper.

"Oh! Now you're watching the movie" I snapped.

Even in the dark of the movie theater, I could still vaguely see the surprise on Mia's face.

I would have to ask her later why she really wanted Evan to come, because right now I was under the impression she did it to get him upset and that really pissed me off.

Mia turned her attention back to the screen without a word and I sat back in my seat with pride.

Evan was laughing silently next to me, and above all else I was just happy that for the first time today he was actually having a good time.

When the credits started rolling, Evan and I left the theater, without looking to see if Mia and Kyle were following.

I was all set to leave before Mia had a chance to say anything else to us, but she came running out of the theater after us, "Hey guys! Are you leaving already?" she asked.

"The movie ended so we're leaving" I said, in a 'duh' kind of tone.

"I'll be waiting in the car" Evan said to me after glancing at Mia, before leaving the movie theater.

"What's been your problem? You were all sassy in the theater." Mia asked her hands on her hips.

I sighed softly, "It's just...I don't understand why you really wanted us to be there. In all honesty, I spent eight dollars for a crap movie and you were making out with Kyle the whole time" I said.

"I just wanted your support for my first date" she said.

"It's not like I can bring pom poms and cheer you guys on while you're making out" I said, "Yeah Kyle! Way to go Mia! Get some of that tongue action!" I cheered sarcastically.

Mia rolled her eyes, "I just needed you there." She said, "You know how awkward of a person I am" she said.

I raised an eyebrow, "Fine. But why'd Evan have to come? Huh? You know he likes you and you just put him through an hour and a half of torture" I said.

Mia shrugged, "I just wanted him to get the idea into his head that I'm dating someone and I'm not interested" she said.

"Well there's other ways to do that instead of making out with another guy in front of him" I said.

"Hey Mia, is everything ok here?" Kyle asked, coming up to us.

Mia turned to him, "Yeah, I was just asking Finnly if she would want to go get ice cream with us" she said.

I gave her a small polite smile, "I'm sorry but I think Evan and I are just going to go home" I said.

Kyle frowned, "That sucks, well maybe next time" he said.

I nodded, "yeah. Maybe" I said, before walking away from them.

Or not I mentally added.
