11 - Sun and Moon
Finding the sun and moon was like finding a pearl in an oyster. An undiscovered hidden gem. A sourness reminded Gray that a jerk who knew the guy with the shoe print had seen it before him. For a sweet girl, she made some poor choices. Drugs were just one. Her relaxed stance assured him she wasn't in need of a fix. It surprised him how the abuse didn't overly traumatize her. He remembered feeling off kilter after shaking down a blackmailer, but he would shake down the violent SOB if she gave him a name.
After an hour of exploration, Gray offered to make a late lunch. "I have to bring the baby's things back."
Instead of heading right up, he stopped and kissed her like a sailor going off to sea. Gray hadn't said goodbye to Beth when she left the fort for the airbase, he had been training at a joint base further away. K pushed all his darkness away.
She purred, "Bye, hot stuff."
He laughed, because he was just going upstairs, not out to sea or across a war-torn country. Still smiling, he entered the upstairs kitchen. It was a homey extended room which had become their family gathering place. Sofia stood watching Monty pace back and forth on his phone. "... If I can help in any way... I know... We were there... Okay. Keep me informed."
He looked from Sofia to Monty. "What's going on?"
"I was talking to Sinclair about the missing girl."
"What missing girl?" Gray looked at Monty.
Sofia frowned. "The missing heiress."
Monty shook his head. "Look at him. He's so deep into the woman he's got downstairs, he wouldn't know if an asteroid was heading for the house."
"I hope you would frigging tell me. You might survive without me, but Ana loves me."
Sofia laughed. "We both love you, but Ana has you wrapped around her little finger."
"And he's not?" Gray pointed to Monty.
"She's my daughter. Maybe you should check in with your PD friends to see what they know."
"What's the story?"
"Doyle Kane of the Kanes."
"The ones that own buildings on every corner?"
"Those Kanes."
"And Sinclair knows them." Sinclair had a reputation as a shark, but Monty had recently cut a deal with him, or his people had.
"He's dating the sister and was the brother's best man."
"What happened? Maybe she ran away."
"She was hanging out with Unhinged Rage. It's some metal band."
"I know who they are. Their music sucks."
Sofia smiled. "The guys are hot."
"How do you know?"
She used her hands to stress her response. "They were on the news."
"The manager is being held for beating her up, but an unnamed accomplice abducted her."
"Abducted?" Shit. Fuck.
"That's what the news is saying, but the manager is claiming the guy beat him up."
"Where did this go down?"
"While we were stuck listening to speeches Friday night. The band was partying in a suite upstairs. They found evidence of drugs."
"No surprise." Sofia looked like a mother scolding a teen.
"What's this girl look like?"
Sofia stepped forward. "Beautiful. Here."
His heart pounded. She was gorgeous. As he scrolled through, he stopped on one of her on a boat in a bikini. Sun and moon. "Fuck!"
"Her family is frantic. Security tape recorded part of the beating, but the camera was only on the dumpster. They got the manager throwing her bag in the dumpster five minutes after she disappeared. An employee who went outside for a smoke found her broken phone. It started the review of the footage."
Gray scrubbed his hand through his hair. "Fucking. Fuck." He took out his phone and handed it to Monty. "Scroll."
"These are great pictures of Ana. When did you get so good with the camera?"
"No. Before those. She told me no one was looking for her. She didn't want anyone to see her."
"Jesus. The bastard."
"I didn't know who she was. She lied. Even her name."
"You need to tell her. I need to call Sinclair. Tell one of your friends the truth because they think you're part of it."
He kept looking at her image. Doyle. In some ways she looked like a stranger. "Who's this guy she's always with?"
Sofia sighed. "Tarzan."
He had no right to be jealous of a guy named Tarzan. Monty laughed. Nothing was funny. "It's her twin. He's on the shows my wife loves."
Brother. Twin. He breathed. "I have to go."
When he stepped into his kitchen, K/Doyle looked up at him. Her smile turned into a frown. "What's wrong?"
He handed her his phone with the missing heiress headline. She sunk down onto the couch. "Monty is calling Sinclair. They've done business."
She looked up at him. "Who is he?"
"Monty Whitby."
Her mouth formed an oh. "I've heard of him. It says someone abducted me. It's not true."
"I know. This is what's going to happen. I'm going to call one of my friends and he'll come over. You'll need to meet with him without me. Just tell him the truth. You can have your friend, Sinclair, with you."
"I don't want Jimmy to see me."
He didn't want to tell her, but chances were her whole family would see her. "I can send Sofia down to sit with you." She shrugged. "She's Ana's mother and I would trust her with my life."
She shrugged again, and he stepped forward to kiss her, but everything had changed. He suddenly felt like just a chauffeur.
He climbed the stairs slowly, missing her already. "I'll call Devin from here. Sofia, will you go see if she's okay?"
"Sinclair's on his way over."
"Does he know?"
Monty shook his head. "I told him my bodyguard saw something."
Gray nodded as he connected with his friend, a detective. "Hey, man. Can you come over? I know something about the Kane case. I had my head in the sand."
Devin laughed. "Knowing you it was a set of breasts not sand."
"Haha. Are you coming?"
"It's Sunday, but yeah, I'm coming."
He jumped like a skittish cat when the doorbell rang. As Monty went to open the door, Ana started crying. Gray rushed up the back staircase. When she looked at him, she stopped crying. He lifted her out of the crib.
He felt weak using a baby as a shield, when he walked down to meet Sinclair. There was a car outside with a driver leaning against it. To Monty and Sofia, he was family, but to the rest of the world he was just a chauffeur.
"Jimmy, this is Gray. I'll take her. And my little Ana."
He hardly looked at the baby as he focused on Gray. "What do you know?"
"I was parked illegally in the back of the hotel. I looked up from my book to see a guy kicking a woman. Sorry I thought he was a John or a..." He cleared his throat. "Obviously not. Regardless, my fist caught him by surprise. The SOB looked like he would have kept kicking, not stopping. I grabbed her and got the hell outta Dodge."
"Where is she? Is she okay?"
"She's healing. It isn't pretty. Here's the thing. She told me no one would miss her and she couldn't go home until her face healed."
"Sounds like Doyle."
Gray's gut tightened. The guy knew Doyle, and Gray hadn't known her name. "She told me her name is Katherine. She has a K on the inside of her wrist."
Jimmy nodded. "Kasper has a D. They are tight. He hasn't slept. We had dinner on Friday night, and she left to join the fucking band. She wasn't herself at dinner. Her sister, Tate, thought she was high."
Gray nodded. "Me too. She had a bug. A fever, but it broke yesterday afternoon. I'm watching her for a concussion, but I wouldn't rule it out. She's been resting."
"Why the fuck did you wait so long?"
Monty stepped forward as the doorbell rang. "Gray isn't one to follow the news. I'm surprised he knows the governor's name."
Gray would thank Monty later, but he knew Maura Healey. He opened the door.
Devin stepped in. "This better be good."
"I asked you over to take my statement."
Devin laughed. "What did you do jaywalk or park illegally?"
"Illegally. Friday night behind the hotel..." He repeated it.
"Are you telling me the Kane girl is here?"
He nodded. "At my place downstairs. You can go down."
Sinclair stepped forward. "I want to see her."
"She doesn't want you to see her. It's bad."
Gray felt like he was betraying Doyle when he handed Sinclair his phone. The guy looked like someone had kicked him in his groin. "She always finds the wrong crowd. I've stepped in to protect her a few times over the years."
"If she told me who she was, I would have brought her home."
Sinclair was busy with his own phone. "She can be determined. I texted Tate she's safe. By the time we're done, Unhinged Rage will be just unhinged."
Monty nodded. "Let me know if I can help."
"Why didn't you tell me when you called before?"
"Gray overheard and asked what I was talking about. He put it together."
Jimmy looked at his phone. "The family is extremely worried. If she sees anyone it'll be Kasper. Georgie can go get him."
Gray watched Sinclair texting. He reminded him of Monty. They both knew how to get what they wanted. He sunk into his seat and put his head in his hands. It was just a matter of time and she would be gone.
