Change Starts With You
"Never let them see that they get to you"
Barbara Nicholas was born with a national model look. A hourglass figure, long slim legs, and a face that you can die for. Big blue eyes that stunned everyone with each glance. Full pink lips that glimmer in the light and long blonde hair that every girl craves: a national Barbie. The only setback was that she loathed every bit it.
Just because she had the looks of a model doesn't mean she must be one. Barbara's dream was to become a professional kickboxer. Ever since she had a talent to fight, she would study and learn many ways to fight. Then one-day kickboxing came into her life and she knew right then and there that she wanted to be a kickboxer.
Of course, there was set back, like her mother for example. At the age of seven, her mother decided to capitalize Barbara's stunning beautiful looks, that she dresses her up and sign her up to Beauty Pageants. In the pageants, she worn gowns of all colors and perfumed fighting skills that lead to her winnings since the judges were probably frighten of her. Even though the winnings won her thousands of dollars, Barbara was never truly happy.
At twelve, Barbara developed an attitude and decided to quit Beauty Pageants and continued with martial arts that lead to her dream of becoming a professional kickboxer. During that time, Barbara had promfumed many arts that helped her gain her dream. A kickboxing tryout was held next week and Barbara couldn't wait but one thing stood in her way: high school.
High school was an endless journey with downers and bullies. Every one of them is a setback that it took a while for Barbara to ignore. The struggle may had let them see that they had gotten her in the past but they will never see that they got to her now. Even her friends, like her, all have dreams and try their best to ignore the drama.
Donald is excellent at doctoring. He loves to helps others and finding cures but with having the same name as a duck and a Presidential candidate, the jokes never end.
Belle was ballerina until her knee buckled on her two months ago. Since then she's been in and out of surgery. Her parents named her after their favorite movie. To make matters worse, Belle's boyfriend was a large football player with gorgeous hair. But that never let them to give up their dream.
Carly was a different story. Carly was a beautiful singer. She loved to be in plays and sing in TV shows. One day when performing, Carly strained her voice and now she has a squeaky voice. Since then people made fun of her voice and calling her Snow White. Sick of the teasing, Carly transformed herself to look and even dress like Snow White every day. She gets on everyone's nerves when she sings in her squeaky voice and pretend to die every time she takes a bite out of an apple.
Whatever happen to Carly, she surely should that people had gotten to her and Barbara hated nothing more. She hated two things, people getting under her sink and that stupid song.
While walking through the hallways, someone whispered in Barbara's ear, "Come on Barbie, let's go party."
Her mind wanted to scream. She loathes them so much that she wanted to kick their wind pipes and crush their spins. They wanted to see her reaction but all she could do was gritted her teeth as she walked away. Don't ever let them see that they get to you.
Barbara walked into the cafeteria and found her friends at their table. Belle's boyfriend was walking around their table while gazing at his phone.
"Gerald, put that phone down and get over here!" Barbara called out. Gerald looked up and walked into a wall.
As the football player shamefully walked back to his table, everyone started to laugh at him. Belle patted his back and comfort him.
Barbara rolled her eyes. "Why are you even playing that stupid game at school? You know that game is dangerous."
Gerald put his phone away. "Sorry, it's addicting. I need to catch them all! Besides, who died and made you queen?"
Donald nodded as well. "You have been pretty busy lately.
Barbara turned to him and opened her mouth but sighed instead. "You're right. I've been stress a lot since the kick boxing tryouts are just in a few days and a lot of people are getting under my skin because of my looks."
"Oh no. Who said what to you this time?" Belle's kind green eyes reflected off of Barbara's.
"Just some random junior who thinks he rules the school. I'm a senior for crying out loud! We all are? Why are we letting these bullies bring us down? We need to-" Barbara speech was cut off as a girl with a blue tank top and yellow jeans began to fall and drop a apple. The apple rolled and stopped at Donald's feet's.
The people at the girl's table cheered as one guy got up and kissed the girl. She woke up and smiled as he picked her up and left the cafeteria: just another day at school.
The friends rolled their eyes. "This is so getting old." Gerald spoke first. "She's been doing this since the ninth grade. It's time to stop."
The other agreed as Barbara spoke. "Someone needs to show her the light and ignore the silliness. Someone needs to help her win her fight against the despair of words. It's like taking a hit and not feeling the fight. She needs..." Barbara paused as the thought came to her. "She needs friend."
Her friends watch her as she continued. "One of the most reasons why Carly keeps the Snow White act is because we didn't help her. She needs to know that she can still do more with life than this silly act." She got up. "And I'm the one who show her the way."
Barbara walked out of the cafeteria and into the girl's bathroom. Lucky, she found the right bathroom as she spotted Carly putting make up on. Before she walked in there, Barbara heard Carly speaking to herself.
"Stupid boys." She places lipstick on her lips. "Gotta be rose red." She sighed and looked carefully at the mirror. Her eyes began to grow misty. "Whom am I fooling? I can't keep this up anymore. There's no hope for me." She fell to her knees and wept.
Barbara carefully walked in and gaze upon her former friend. How the years neglected them both and how they spent their separate ways. Ever since Carly started to act like Snow White and Barbara's kick boxing career, they both stop becoming friends and let their differences divide them from their friendship. Barbara now realize that they are not the different after all. They both need a helping hand.
She places her hand on Carly's shoulder, and the weeping girl looked up with mascara running down her cheeks.
"Barbara?" Carly's voice broke mid tear.
The teen smiled. "Didn't expect to see me again huh?" Barbara garb a towel and started to wipe Carly's tears.
"I thought we're not friends anymore?"
"I can't help it if someone is in need. Besides, what we did in the past was childish. We need to leave that behind and start anew. Now, I'm here to show you the light." When Carly looked up at Barbara she continued, "Don't ever let them see that they get to you. Don't take they're negativity. That's what they want to from you. Change starts with you and change starts now."
Carly wiped her tears again. "You're right. I shouldn't have let others to me. I was trying to make them see that is what they want me to be but that never done me any good. Thank you for showing me the light again. I'll be me, just me from now on."
And Carly kept her promise. From then on Carly didn't listen to anyone anymore. She continued to pursue her dream and with hard training, she was able to become a professional singer. Recorder dealers from all around hope to sign a deal with her.
Belle's knee was able to heal enough that she can continue to dance as graceful as a ballerina again.
Donald's dream of becoming a doctor came early. An opportunity came rolling over and now his life had changed forever.
As for Barbara, she passes the kickboxing tryouts and her rain was coming down. With hope in their hearts, they were able to pursue they're dreams. They all never gave up when life told them to stop. They were going to live they're dream the way they wanted it be. Change started with them and change starts now.
