Chapter 61
"You know," Remington says, coming up behind Sebastian, "I haven't seen you drink alcohol once since I was in hospital."
Sebastian turns around. "You know, I think you're right," he says, surprised at himself. "I never thought that'd happen."
The singer smiles. "At least something good has come out of all of this." His hand is on the older's shoulder. Since the hotel incident, Remington has become increasingly attached to Sebastian. He has always been closer to Emerson, but recently, the boy finds himself feeling safer with the guitarist. Perhaps because Sebastian is older, or because he's been living with him for a while.
Later on, before the show, Remington is in the bus alone, changing his clothes because he spilled coffee all down himself. He gets dressed in the bathroom, not bothering to lock the door because there is no one else on the bus.
He hears someone come onto the bus just as he is opening the bathroom door, and swiftly hides in his bunk when he sees who it is.
Alexis.
Remington folds his arms over his chest and brings his knees up, praying that she goes away. But she doesn't, and he flinches when the curtain is pulled back. "I want to talk to you," the photographer says, looking right at him. The boy whimpers. "You wake me up every fucking night with you bloody screams," she complains, and all Remington can think is, I'm sorry. "You always avoid me and run away. What the fuck is your problem with me? I haven't done anything to deserve this."
The boy is quivering, and he can feel all the blood drain from his heart at her harsh words. What the fuck is your problem? That's what Holly would say if he ever tried to fight her or defend himself. He can't make his mouth open. He is so scared of saying something that'll anger her more.
"I'm waiting," the girl states, rude.
Remington has tears in his eyes. "Sorry," he whispers, "I'm sorry."
She practically growls. "You should be, slut," she retorts, and the singer watches is horror as she steps closer. Suddenly he isn't looking at Alexis anymore, he's looking at Holly.
He moves as far back as he can, pressing himself into the corner of the bunk. "Please don't," he sobs, "I'm sorry, Holly, I-I didn't mean to." His voice wavers and trembles.
Holly gives him that horrible, horrible smirk. "Oh, but you never do," she taunts, hitting her hand hard against the wall. Remington jumps. "Look at you! Scared of that! You fucking baby." Her voice is so unforgiving. It always is.
Remington hugs his knees to his chest, forcing breaths. "Sorry," he cries, "Holly, please, I'm sorry!" Sobs wrack his body cruelly he seems to lose the ability to breathe at all.
The mean woman is laughing now, and loudly. "Shut up," she shouts bitterly, kicking the wall.
Alexis rushes off the bus to get Sebastian as soon as the singer screams, finally understanding what's going on. She didn't even say a thing to him, not one word, and he acted like she was shouting the rudest things at him.
Because he was abused.
It makes sense now.
She runs into the venue and bumps into the guitarist, panicked. "You need to go to the bus-like-now!"
Sebastian doesn't have to be told twice. He rushes outside and onto the vehicle, heart dropping at the familiar sound of his brother sobbing. The man is careful, approaching the bed slowly. "Remington, buddy, it's me, it's Sebastian," he says calmly, quietly. "No one's going to hurt you." The gentle and comforting sound of the older's voice brings Remington back into the real world. He stares Sebastian with wide, teary, eyes. "Alright, you're okay," Sebastian assures, "you're safe." The younger looks defeated and exhausted, and hardly manages to shake his head. He watches as his brother cautiously gets in the bunk with him, and gratefully crawls into the man's welcoming arms. "What happened, pumpkin?"
Remington whimpers and rubs his eyes. "Hallucination," he whispers, making himself breathe slowly.
The guitarist frowns and kisses the boy's head. "Alexis didn't hurt you, did she?" He asks, worried, because she had no reason to go back to the bus.
"Don't know," Remington mumbles, "confusing." He moves around in his brother's lap, settling with his head pressed against the man's chest. "Sebastian I-I don't think I can play any more shows," he admits, "I'm so-I'm so tired all the time and I-I'm so fucking terrified of Hol-Alexis."
Sebastian knew this was coming. He knew before they even started touring that Remington wouldn't be able to do it. "We'll sort this out, okay? I'm not going to let you go on like this." He runs his fingers slowly through the black hair of the boy.
With a yawn, the singer murmurs, "thank you, Sebby, I really couldn't live without you." He sits up and stretches.
"You absolutely do not need to thank me. How about we put on a film on your laptop and steal all the snacks before the others get back?" Sebastian's suggestion eases the boy's mind.
Watching a film and eating junk food is exactly what he needs. "Okay," he replies, "I'll wait here, though."
Sebastian smiles, and gets out of the bunk. "Of course, precious, you take it easy. I'll call Em and let him know what's happening."
"Can you tell them to be quiet when they come back?" He yawns again, stretching his arms.
"Sure thing." The man disappears off to get some bags of crisps and sweets, and calls Emerson while he's there.
"Where the fuck are you? VIP started ten fucking minutes ago!" The drummer is agitated, obviously.
Sebastian opens the cupboards to find snacks. "I'm on the bus with Remington. He had a bad hallucination and just told me he can't keep performing. Go out with the others, Em, we're just going t watch a film and Rem could do with the quiet." He pulls out two large bags of salt and vinegar crisps.
"Oh shit, is he okay?"
"Yeah, he's alright now. Go and have fun and I'll cancel the rest of tour." They talk for a while longer and then Sebastian talks the food and a bottle of lemonade back to Remington's bunk. "Here we are," he says, sitting back on the bed. "They're going out so it'll be quit for a few hours."
Remington opens his laptop and finds a film to watch, but ends up settling on The Vampire Diaries. He sits with his legs over Sebastian's and the computer on the bed beside them, his head on his brother's shoulder as they watch the show and eat the food.
The two of them fall asleep sometime between their fourth and fifth episode.
