"At least we found a few things," Taehyungie hyung said, looking out of the car window, as we drove back to the industrial estate we were staying at.
We were on our way back to the safe warehouse, Namjoon hyung took us to after the outbreak of the zombie virus, after completing a rather unsuccessful food supply run. It had been a long arse day, scouting all the local houses and buildings, looking for absolutely anything that could be useful to us.
"I'm sure they're not going to be happy with a box of four, out-of-date, cereal bars and a flat bottle of Coke, hyung," I scoffed, shaking my head. I had to focus more on the road, than his sickening optimism, because we had just driven up to a huge mess of corpses blocking the road.
"It's better than nothing," Tae hyung pointed out, to which I just shrugged. "At least we're not going back empty-handed like last week."
"That's true, I guess," I just shrugged, carefully manoeuvring the car around the disarray of bodies. It was a huge, bloody, disgusting mess and it was dirtying my car! "How did the world get so fucked up?"
"Beats me, Kookie," Tae hyung sighed, sadly glancing at all the bodies on the road. "Just pick up the pace, yeah? I wanna be back before dark."
"I don't think that's happening, hyung," I sighed, still trying to drive around the debris, which was piling up more and more the further we went. It was pissing me off since I wanted to get back soon, as well.
I had given up on the rush of the new world. At first, we all panicked and didn't know how to keep up with all the dangers thrown at us. But now, after two months, we had learned how to defend ourselves properly and nothing seemed to be too much of a risk anymore. To me, the dead were more of an inconvenience - which wasted our time by getting in the way - than something I had to worry about. The truth of the matter was I was bored of it.
I had no idea how the world came to be how it is, I didn't even care. It was just something that happened, something that had torn all happiness away from my life, so it didn't deserve my fear and panic. All my life, I was singing, dancing, performing and meeting people I loved. I had none of that now, just memories I was clinging to.
"This is fucking ridiculous!" I sighed, now forcing my car over the bodies. It made a horrible squelching noise as the bodies bent around the wheels. my car was already fucked at this point, so I gave up on trying to preserve it.
"Be careful," Tae hyung warned, clutching the side of his seat s the car bounced over the corpses. "The last thing we need is for the tires to get clogged up."
I just ignored him and continued driving. He seemed to give up on backseat driving, after a moment or so and leant over to pull something out of the back of the car. As he sat back, properly, he started to chug the bottle of coke we had found, in the back of the cupboard in a small house, about a mile away.
"I thought you weren't allowed Coke..." I said, my brow bending as he drank the whole bottle.
"Why'd you think that?" He asked, confusion lining his voice. He sounded rather amused at my comment.
"The carbonation or something," I shrugged, finally working the car onto a clear bit of road. I could feel the tires sticking as the waste clung to them, but at least we were away from the mess. "I thought it was bad for asthma."
"It's flat, Kook," He reminded me with a chuckle.
"Oh," I said, remembering I had said that not moments before. "Right."
"Just keep driving, dumbass," Tae laughed, finishing off the drink and throwing it behind us. "It's too cold and it's getting dark. We promised the others we'd be back before evening."
"I'm sure they haven't even noticed we're not back," I shrugged, turning down the road, wanting to get back so I could sleep. I was so done with this day, fed up and pissed off. Lately, that was all I had been feeling, fed up. "They're probably too busy."
"I doubt that," Tae hyung frowned at me. I could feel his glare on the side of my head, it was so sharp. I just shrugged again. I was probably right, the others never really seemed bothered about how long we took, anymore, as long as we turned up with food for that night.
The rest of the drive home was silent, which I didn't mind. As much as I loved Taehyungie hyung, sometimes I liked it more when he shut up for a while.
My face and heart dropped to the pit of my stomach as we drove up to the fence surrounding our base. The zombie-like creatures were in the process of pushing it to the ground.
"Shit!" I shouted, quickly driving up to the fence.
"For fucks sake!" Tae hyung exclaimed, eyeing how many dead there were. There were hundreds, at least, and they were starting to get into the field of the industrial estate. I drove through the gates and we both jumped out, leaving the engine running.
"Hyung!" I shouted, as loud as I possibly could, while pulling my knife out of my belt.
"Hyung!" Tae shouted as well, trying to get the rest of the group's attention. I started stabbing my knife into as many of those bastards' heads as I could. "The fence is coming down!"
Gunfire suddenly started behind us as Namjoon hyung and Jin hyung backed us up, shooting the dead down, with Jiminssi and Hobi hyung behind them using rifles. Yoongi hyung was running down and swapped places with Taehyung hyung, just so he didn't run out of breath and set his asthma off.
"Yoongi, Jungkook, don't get too close!" Joon hyung shouted, I could only just make out his words over the sound of dead growling at me. They were all around me, closing in quickly.
One of the dead fell behind me, making me jump away from it. I shot a glance up at the shooters and saw Jin hyung aiming in my direction. I realised he had taken that dead one out before it could grab me, and I shot him a small smile to show my gratitude.
I kept swinging my knife at the monsters, shoving them away when they got too close. I was getting tired, or anything, but there were just too many to handle, even with Yoongi hyungs help.
"This isn't possible!" I shouted, still knocking the dead away. They were surrounding us now and there was no way we'd be able to take them all out, the way we were going. "There's too many!"
I couldn't hear what Joon hyung was trying to shout at us but, from the way they cleared a path for us, it was obvious he wanted us to fall back. I grabbed my pistol from the holster on my belt, as did Yoongi hyung, and we ran up to the line of our brothers. We started shooting and suddenly the gunfire started to sound like a firework festival. In hindsight, we were probably drawing more and more dead towards us, but I don't think anyone was thinking about that at the moment. I saw all my brothers' expressions. Taehyung, Jiminssi, and Hobi hyung were all looking terrified and panicked. Yoongi hyung, Jin hyung, and Namjoon hyung were looking more focused and determined than ever.
"Fuck this!" Yoongi hyung shouted though I still couldn't hear him clearly. The dead were now working their way up to us, filling up the field. It wasn't until I heard him call my name that his order became clear. "...Hyung, Jungkook, go and get your cars ready to leave. We will hold them off for as long as possible, but make things quick!"
I grabbed Tae's shoulder, nodding to Yoongi hyung, as we ran up to my car. We jumped back into the car and I drove back up the field, mentally praising myself for leaving the engine running.
"Slow down," Tae hyung said quickly, patting my knee to get my attention.
"Why?" I asked, flashing him a frown. I wasn't willing to slow down, nor was I going to. I wanted to get as far away from this hell hole as I could, it was bad enough having to wait for everyone else.
"Get Hobi and Jimin in the car," He said, his tone turning sharp. I shot the two, running up the field, a look. "Look, they're exhausted."
"They're fine," I shook my head. They could get up the field, they were already ahead of us. There was no need to slow everything down.
I put the car into park once we reached the resource room. Without a word, Taehyungie hyung jumped out of the car and legged it to Jimin hyung, who - to be fair - looked like he was about to fall over.
I slumped in my seat, just trying to calm my breathing while I waited for the others to come. Jimin hyung and Tae hyung ran off, I assume to collect Jimin's bag from his room. I didn't realise just how fast my heart was racing until I had nothing to do. I contemplated going and helping Hobi hyung, in the resource room, but he was already running in the direction of my car before I could. I rolled my window down as he neared.
"Where's Chim and Tae?" He asked, sounding pretty breathless. I suddenly felt bad for not pulling over, as Tae said, and helping them.
"Gone to get Jimin hyung's bag. You need to go and get the others." I said, hearing the gunfire dying down now. "I think they're out of ammo now."
"I'm going, I'm going!" Hobi hyung nodded, rushing, carrying all the gear he had collected to his car, parked a little way away. I watched as he ignited the engine and pulled away to save the last three from the dead, taking over our new home.
It didn't take long for him to circle around and drive back, but Yoongi hyung had run ahead. I was glad because, not only did it mean we could go quickly, Tae and Jimin seemed to be taking forever!
"Yoongi hyung, thank God you're here!" I sighed, leaning my head back again.
"Where are the other two?" He asked, sounding concerned as he looked around for Tae and Jiminssi. He was giving me a look which was, both, demanding an answer and telling me to hurry with it. It annoyed me, I had no idea what those two were doing!
"Go and find them!" I snapped. "Jimin ran off, back to your unit, and tea followed. I have no idea what they're doing!"
"What?" He should, not waste a second before running off to his room to find the other two. I watched as he ran back but was quickly pulled out of my daze. Hobi hyung pulled up beside my car and was rolling his window down. I looked over as Namjoon hyung leaned over and started shouting at me.
"Kook, what the heck is going on?" He shouted. I shrugged, feeling pissed off. If I spoke I knew I'd snap, so I tried to bite my tongue. "Where is everyone?"
"Jimin buggered off!" I shouted back, snapping just like I had predicted. Lately, I had a really short temper. I couldn't exactly explain why, but I just knew I couldn't control it. "I don't know what they're fucking doing!"
"Yah! Joon lay off," Jin hyung suddenly cut me off, with a harsh tone, from the back seat of Hobi hyung's car, causing me to glare at him. He pointed directly at me, making me shiver with annoyance at how patronising he was being. "And you, do not talk like that!"
I fell silent, not because he had told me off like a for year old, but because I didn't have the energy to argue with anyone. Jin hyung's scolding didn't phase me, I was used to it by now. I just slumped back once again, just as Tae hyung was storming over to the car. He yanked the passenger door open and slammed it behind him. He was so angry, I had never seen him like that before. I'm not going to lie, it kind of worried me.
"What the hell is going on?" I asked him in frustration and confusion. He threw his head back as he slumped in his seat, hiding his face with his hands.
"I have no idea," He sighed, with a dramatic shrug, sounding exhausted.
Suddenly, sharp cries rang through the estate. I snapped my head around and saw Yoongi hyung carrying Jimin to Hobi hyung's car. Jiminssi was screaming and kicking against him but Yoongi hyung refused to let him go, as he forced him into the backseat. I looked back to Tae, about to ask him what happened, but his eyes were wide and guilt was written all over his face. I decided to keep quiet.
Hobi's car started up and he gestured for me to follow him as he drove away, which I did and we didn't stop driving until the car broke down on us, completely out of gas.
