chapter9
Week days at my house are the worst. Ranging from running more errands for my mom to doing thorough house chores which would later leave you with red palms and itching backs.
I plopped down tiredly on of the cushions in the sitting room. I wanted to catch my breathe. I just finished concluding my house chores and my mom told me to prepare so as to follow her to the market.
It was a distressing news. I was walking through the downstairs passage when I heard the firm voice of my mother ordering me to be done in the next twenty five minutes.
Unfortunately for me, a loud sigh escaped my lips. My mom heard it and then said her verdict. "You're a very lazy girl! What have you done since today that will make you this tired?! I've condoled enough of your lazy attitude. In short, you will go to the market alone."
My heart almost stopped functioning. Did I just hear right?
I doubted. I really doubted.
"Let me not wait for you to come upstairs and take the money from me." The loudness of her voice told me how real it was.
I muttered my answer as I headed to the sitting room were I am now.
"Do you mind if I follow you to the market?" I turned to the voice of Zimuzor who stood inches away from the cushion I sat on.
"Are you here to annoy me? You better not because you won't appreciate that part of me." I snapped at me.
"Me? Annoy you? I'm sure not as jobless as that. But then, when you are dressed for going to the market, you can inform me so that I'll follow." He said simply while I just stood up, went up the stairs and then cornered to my room.
I wasted about five minutes, just sitting on my bed and thinking randomly before I then selected my choice clothe and wore it.
I was good to go in the lilac knee length gown which I wore with a fluffy slippers and then a one handed black bag.
"Mummy, the list." I went to her room and handed her the list of all the needed items we needed to buy in the house.
"You didn't add vegetables." My mom pointed out as she looked up from the list I handed to her and then stared at me.
"But we have eaten enough of it this week. Why don't we start next week with something different?" I told her.
"You will always be like a bone until you eat something that will supply you with flesh and make blood run in your system." Her statement totally annoyed me.
"So...water is running through my system?" I twitched my lips that aided in spitting out the sarcastic statement.
"Kaima I have no words for you. Sincerely speaking, I don't." She shook her head and fished out some money in the silver electroplated purse that laid beside her. "I don't want to ask for my change." She said and then gave me the money.
"Zimuzor said he will be following me to the..."
She didn't let me finish my statement. "No one is going anywhere with you."
I turned to leave her room. "It's not as if I asked him to follow me. It's his choice."
"Kaima what did you just say?" Her voice was heard.
"Nothing." I got to the door faster and then closed it after I exited her room.
I hissed.
She was just as annoying as usual.

"Madam how much is this catfish?" I asked the middle aged fish seller who tied a wrapper over the cheap gown she was wearing.
"I've told you that's it's two thousand naira." The woman didn't seem quite happy with my question.
As if her attitude concerned me. I was here for her fish not her silliness.
"How can I buy this small fish at this amount? No o, I'm buying it one thousand five hundred." I stated my mind.
The middle aged fish seller hissed. "That is the cost price for me. There's no way I will sell it to you that amount."
"All right, I will buy two for one three thousand five hundred naira." It was a bargain from me.
"Leave my shop! This is how your parents do their business and still make it. Nonsense!" The woman ran her mouth.
"All due respect ma, but you have to watch your tongue. Besides who said I was going to buy the fish again? Keep your catfish let me keep my money to myself." I didn't care if she was an elderly woman or not.
"Wahala! Na condition make crayfish bend. That is why you will run your mouth like an untrained child. You're running your mouth like this because you are seeing me in this shop na." She gestured towards the shop that was housing her and her products.
I left her to her madness. The last thing I was going to do was creating a scene in a marketplace.
I went to another shop and bought the same catfish at a relatively cheap price.
"What brings this one to the market?" I collected my change from the fish seller and turned to leave, ignoring a statement I heard behind me.
"Do you know her?" I heard as well. I was trying to cross the road to a butchers shop where I can buy red meat.
"Chikaima!" I turned to the same voice who finally called my name.
I scrunched up my face in a very rude manner. And I almost turned to continue my business before the idiot started, "When did you start coming to the market? Wow, the young has finally grown."
I gave both she and her fat sister a look over. Her presence was annoying but the worse was that of her sister who was smiling. It was really displeasing.
That fat sister of hers was as circular as a doughnut. One wouldn't know the difference between her massive breasts and her protruding belly, as they were virtually the same proportion.
Her legs were now as tiny as a broomstick. Those once that you can just break with just a finger or two.
"What a cursed day is this! I never knew fugitives were also allowed to visit the market. Well, who am I to blame?" I shrugged.
"Wait, what do you mean by fugitives. You're really referring to Amarachi and I?" Her sister voiced out.
"That's the silly stupid girl I told you of that made a fool of me in the cafeteria some weeks ago." Amarachi retorted.
"Look..." I interrupted the stupid doughnut that eventually degraded herself.
"No, you listen and listen carefully because I have no time to spend interacting with idiots. Neither do I want to be seen any further with you two before I would be counted as your class. This should be the very last time you and your kid sister will stop me anywhere you see me to spit out bullshit like this one." I paused to give them a belittling look.
"I thought you're at least wiser than the girl beside you. But then, they say blood is thicker than water. So I'm not surprised at your display of foolishness immaturity." I stopped when I saw her hand rising.
"Wait, are you trying to slap me? I guess you have never been featured in any movie. So try me right now and get featured in one because I'm so gonna make a scene. You're the crazy big sis? Sorry, cause I'm just the exact definition of the word crazy."
"I can see that you are all mannerless in that your school. You have no atom of sense and sensibility. That explains your mental case."
"I'm not denying being a mental case. Neither am I complaining. But the saddening thing is that you don't act your age. You should be correcting your sister not looking for someone gullible to bully. Asides that, I believe your mates are meant to be either preparing to be in or already in their husbands house by now doing something commendable not walking around the streets of the market until they are close to menopause." I blurted out.
Amarachi was raging. "You're so despicable. This is not ending here!"
I laughed a bit. "That reminds of you. Get ready for me next week Monday because I will drum a beat you must surely dance to."
I let out a spine chilling hiss and then left there with a few people staring at us.
When I was done buying the needed foodstuffs like red meat, tomatoes, plantains and that green vegetable I hated but had to buy, I stopped a tricycle with my destination at mind.
Soon I was back home. Tired and wishing for a sound sleep. But I had to kill that thought, knowing the kind of mother I have.
&&*&&*&&*&&*&&*&&*&&
It wasn't long until Monday reached. My mom took Zimuzor and I to school. After informing him of where to get his school uniform and all what that concerned him, she drove off to her place of work.
We walked on separate sides. Neither of us wanted people to know that we live together. It was somehow. Just somehow.
I left for class while he left for the reception office. My mom had earlier contacted the receptionist and transferred his school fees to the school account. Then she gave him money to give the receptionist for his school uniform which would be issued to him later in the day.
When I got to class, many of my mates were already present. I immediately brought out my English assignment which I couldn't do during the weekend and began doing it.
Failure to do so would result to grievous punishment after the assembly.
'Awwwn... isn't he just too fine.'
'Oh! gracious demi god'
'Another fine boy in this SS3 again?'
I looked up amidst the loud voices of some of my female classmates to behold Zimuzor arrogantly walking to the back. Some of the guys who was around since the junior days in this school, acknowledged him. Back then, he was part of their crew.
I wanted to see Naomi's reaction so I turned sideways and glanced at her. She was reading a book.
I was surprised that she didn't join the other girls who were openly ogling and drooling over Zimuzor.
Bravo!
"Please give me your assignment when you're done." Someone from behind leaned towards me and said.
My breathe hitched. I knew the owner of that voice. My one and only boyfriend.
Oh! How I've erased some part of him from my memory.
I was supposed to give him the silence treatment right? I didn't forget this.
I kept on struggling to get the main idea of the passage I was reading. The questions were a bit confusing for me.
"I didn't answer mine, I was busy through out the weekend." He walked to my front.
Thanks for the info but I didn't ask for it, okay?
"Kaima stop this! You're just so stubborn and mean. You have both refused to hear me out or read my messages let alone answer my calls." The pitch of his voice went higher.
"Look here, Dindu. You dare not raise your voice at me, you are not insane." I angrily voiced back.
"Of course, I am. Your attitude is driving me insane. I've apologised to you hundreds of times but you will just wave me aside. It's not fair!" He retorted.
I hissed. "You are disturbing my peace. And please stop shouting to the whole class, you are not entertaining them or are you?"
Dindu sighed at my stubbornness. "I've never repeated my apologies this much for a girl. But I am doing so and will keep it until you accept it."
"Naomi is right here, you are free to ask her if I have anything going on with her. Cause I am nothing but a classmate to her! For goodness sake, it's just you that I want. How do I prove it?" He continued.
I wanted us. I wanted Kadi back. But I just didn't want to continue this journey with him. What he did last time made me almost think that I've been sailing in a paper boat with him not a ship!
"Am bored of you." I dryly replied him. "What's new that you're going to offer me if I accept this your apology?"
That I surprised him with that question was a total understatement.
"O..Of course there are many shades of me. I'm going to treat you right and more proper. If you haven't seen that aspect of me, then I'll give you a premium."
Not really funny but I chuckled deeply.
"All right then." I smiled widely and warmly as he pecked my cheeks and moved to his seat which was also beside mine.
A loud uproar of noises made me very conscious of my surrounding. Many of my classmates who watched as I made up with DIndu were cooing and discussing it.
"So you finally ended up in a relationship?!"
I turned to see Zimuzor giving me the mock look.

When school dismissed, Zimuzor and I went home. In the car, I remembered the upcoming Dinner party which would be the last for I and my mates and then rang my mom a bell concerning my dress.
I really trusted my mom in buying nice dresses for me. She wasn't like all those old school moms that would buy you flair skirt when you request for straight cut one. And then you would be like 'Ah ahn... I thought I told you to buy straight cut for me'. Their reply would then be 'Abi.. what did i buy for you? isn't it straight cut? Wear it sef let me be sure it's not tight on you'.
You would just stare at them and then shake your head.
When we reached and all hands were on deck for dinner to be prepared, we all ate Breadfruit to our satisfaction.
After that Zimuzor came my room to in his own words talk with me. Thankfully, he didn't ask about what happened in class between I and Dindu, rather he asked me about Naomi and he got it hot cause I wanted to mess around with him.
"Kaima, that girl that was reading a book when I entered the class, who is she?" Zimuzor asked.
I didn't answer him immediately. I stared at him. Starting from his small lips to what he wore which was a rugged jean short. I wondered if he had a girlfriend in his former school.
"I'm asking you a question, Kaima!" He raised his voice at me.
"Which I am meant to answer or what?" I didn't hesitate to snap.
When did Naomi get to be my favourite bitch that I will discuss something healthy about her?
"What's with you? What are you even feeling like? Who knows if you're....." He was now yelling.
I cut him off the line, "On God, I'll deal with you if you speak trash about me."
"I was and i am still going to say that, who knows if she isn't just better than you and you 're the jealous one." He was daring me to act.
Well, actually he wasn't something so complex to tackle. I didn't even know when I burst into fits of laughter. Everything about him suddenly became funny. His face suddenly looked like that of a clown. His pyjamas especially the trouser aspect suddenly looked like 'Palazzo'.
I laughed even more.
He was just there raking. Why I was laughing baffled him and ignited the fire in him. But dear one, you can relate with me that sometimes stupid things suddenly turns merry and comic to behold. It's the same here.
Suddenly, i got up. The laughter was just too much. I even had to clutch my stomach to avoid falling down.
I suddenly stopped laughing pointed at him and returned to what i was doing for the past ten minutes 'laughing uproariously' before I then halted to give his jobless ass some work.
"Zimuzor eh.. abeg forgive me. Like guy this is not what I packaged for you but seems like your God didn't want to me to anoint your feet. Since you have proved jobless eh.. just go and like my whole pictures on Facebook." I said and burst into laughter again.
He stared at me wondering if I was normal. He was boiling in anger. It's not like the kind anger can be able to boil yam, sef. Just be emitting heat anyhow.

Tuesdays are actually cool in Standard High. And today was no exception. During break we did a 'Hall Of Fame' for the class. Idara one of the popular girls in the b class came over to our class and told us to do a 'Hall Of Fame' of both classes and then switch it with their class so that they will compare and contrast which one was more truthful. This hall of fame eh, made people cry and laugh.
We opened the book, it had pending titles to fill like:
Most beautiful(girl):
Most handome(guy):
And so many others you will soon know about.
"Sarah abeg bring it back when you guys fill it, am going back to my class now." Idara told one of Naomi's friends who concord.
"Finest girl is who?" Adanna asked no one in general.
"No two ways, it's Olamma" Somebody chipped in and the whole class concord.
Olamma was also in the b class. Since she joined Standard High School in SSS1, she had been winning the beauty pageantry.
Asides that, she was quite and jovial. And her character was a big plus.
"Adanna, I'm suspecting you sef, you didn't ask anybody, you just wrote Nelson as the most handsome guy." Sarah accused and I peered into the book to confirm it.
"But he's still the finest in both classes." Adanna defended.
Well, I got Titles of 'Most Savage' and 'Miss Einstein'.
You will join me and laugh at other titles and their bearers.
OFA (Open for all): Naomi Ike
Only girls bear this Title. And then it was her. Within two weeks of her entry into this school and she's almost everybody's 'Personal ashawo'.

I hissed.

Tweet was the half caste in our set. Her beauty was a hidden one. She's also in the art (b) class.
The guys didn't roll with her because they didn't see the so called 'Hidden Beauty'.
I was mentally warning, Tweet is a 'Common Dog'. And her reaction would be a mad one.
I knew what I meant when I said some people would end up being unhappy after the Hall Of Fame.
