The Answer

A young half-gem, half human is sleeping in the back of a pickup truck. The boy lets out a small groan before a shadowy figure approaches her and shakes him awake. "Grian!" The figure exclaims excitedly. The boy gasps. "Snow! Is it morning already?" He asks. "It's midnight! Happy birthday, Grian!" Snow exclaims. The young hybrid grabs his cheeks, then sits up and grabs Snow's cheeks. "Oh man! Are you finally gonna tell me that you're a fushion of the Gems, Sam and Taurtid like you promised?" Gruan asks excitedly. "You already know about all that, Grian." The fushion says with a small laugh. Grian sighs and lets go of Snow. "It's true." He says as he falls back into bed. "But what you don't know is how Sam and Taurtis first met." The fushion with a smug look on his face. Grian sits back up and grabs his cheeks again with stars in his eyes. "Oh my god! I don't!" Snow lets out a laugh.

-Wooshy woosh flashback-

The Earth, 5,750 years ago; it was a promising site of a new Gem colony, but progress was being thwarted by a small, persistent group of rebels. A team of diplomatic Gems were sent from HomeWorld to investigate. Among those Gems was Sam, a rare Howlite with the power to see into the future. Assigned to him were three Onyx, common soldiers, with a mission to protect her. An Onyx with a gem in his right shoulder spoke. "Hey! Can't wait for those rebels to get here!" He exclaimed. An Onyx with a gem in the back of his right hand replied. "Haha, yeah! When I see those rebels, I'm gonna punch them right in their faces!" The first Onyx narrowed his eyes. "What are you sayin'? I'm gonna punch them all over their bodies, and then it'll be over." The second Onyx rolled his eyes. "What if I just punch you!" He punched the right shoulder Onyx in the back of his shoulder as he yelped out in pain and stuck his tongue out. The third Onyx with his gem in the palm of his hand shook his head at incompetence of his teammates. "Oh, come on. We'll punch 'em together when we fuse. That's why they sent, uh, three of us?" Right Shoulder Onyx responded with a, "Three this!" He attempted to punch the Onyx, Taurtis, but he blocked it. Taurtis was knocked backwards, causing him to back into the Howlite, Sam. Onlooking Gems gasped. "Oh, I, um, I'm so sorry, I, let me, uh..." Taurtis stuttered. "I'm fine." Sam said calmly. "What?" Taurtis had said, not sure he had heard the Howlite correctly. "It's okay. It was bound to happen." The aristocratic Gem stated. "I, uh... Okay." Taurtis said. "Now please wait here. I must attend to my duties." The Onyxs nodded. "Right." They said in unison. Sam left his Onyx guards behind and approached Grey Diamond's Palaquin, where Grey Pearl was standing next to her Diamond's throne. You see, Sam had been called to Earth by Grey Diamond, specifically to share his vision of the future. Sam entered the palaquin. "My Diamond, I have arrived." He said. "Sam, tell me what will happen here." The mysterious giant female spoke in elegant tone. "I foresee the rebels attacking the Cloud Arena. Before they are cornered, they will destroy the physical forms of seven gems, including two of my Onyx guards, and myself. Immediately after my form is destroyed, the rebels will be captured. The rebellion ends here." Sam said with confidence. "Thank you, Sam." Grey Diamond said, relieved. "That is all I need to know." Grey Diamond dismissed the Howlite."I look forward to speaking with you again once I reform back on Homeworld." Sam gave a bow to Grey Diamond before he returned to his Onyx guards. Sam knew he would be a casualty, but it did not faze him. He saw his whole life laid out before him, and he had already accepted all of it. "What a beautiful place to build a colony. I wish I could have seen more of this planet." Sam said to no one in particular. "Uh... there's still time." Taurtis said, having heard the Howlite. "That is a nice thought, but... no." Sam said, knowing time was up. Suddenly, a female yelled something. "Grey Diamond! Leave this planet! This colony will not be completed!" "It's the rebels!" The back-handed Onyx exclaimed. Various Gems mutter among themselves. One Gem could be heard shouting, "Who are you!? Show yourselves!" A female with a pink pearl on her forehead and wielding a knife, and a female with a rose quartz in her stomach appeared. "We are the Crystal Gems!" They exclaimed in unison. The Palanquin carrying Grey Diamond and her pearl closed, sprouted mechanical legs, and walked off. The attack was right on schedule. The Pink Pearl used her knife to defeat four other Gems before Taurtis and his fellow guards intervened and fused into a much bigger Onyx. The Onyx fusion charged after the Rose Quartz, but she counter-attacks, instantly defusing the Onyx fusion. The Pink Pearl then jumped in and destroyed the forms of the two other Onyx Guards, leaving just Taurtis. She then prepared to strike Sam. "Thank you, Taurtis. You did your best." He said with a soft smile. Taurtis suddenly realized what Sam meant. He had known that Taurtis would fail. Sam had accepted it. But Taurtis... Taurtis could not. "NO!!" He yelled. He charged at Sam, pushing him out of the way of the Pink Pearl's attack. As the two of them spun in the air, they fused into SnowFlake Obsidian for the first time. "Wha..." The raw fushion examined his newly formed body and the two gems in his palms. "What...!?" Onlooking Gems gasped, horrified. They muttered among themselves. "What... What is this?" The Pink Pearl, amazed, looked on, but shook it off and prepared to attack. She was stopped by the Rose Quartz. "Wait! This is... Hm?" The other Gems noticed them and began to approach, ignoring Snow. "...Let's go." The Pink Pearl nodded. "Uh... Bye!" She exclaimed to the crowd before the two rebels jump away. "Is this...?" Suddenly, Snow unfuses into Sam and Taurtis. The furious crowd closed in around them. They'd never seen fusion of two different types of gems. Various Gems began to shout rude things at the two. Grey Diamond's voice cut through the crowd. "The rebels have fled. Sam, this was not the scenario you described!" He exclaimed. "This is... not what I saw! I don't know what happened, I..." The confused Howlite trailed off. "No! It was me!" Taurtis said, protecting Sam. "Clearly. How dare you fuse with a member of my court!" Grey Diamond yelled. "Forgive me, I-" The Onyx guard was cut off. "You shall be broken for this!" The crowd of Gems began to close in on them, but Sam grabbed Taurtis' hand and dashed off with him. "Waaaiiit!! What are you doooiiing!? Nooo!!" Taurtis protested. The two of them disappeared into the clouds. Sam and Taurtis landed at the base of a mountain, where it was raining heavily. "Ugh, why'd you do that!? I have to get you back up there!" Taurtis yelled. "They were gonna break you." Sam said. "Who cares!? There's tons of me!" The Onyx exclaimed. Taurtid looked up at the rain and the area around the mountain. He groaned in panic. "Gahh! What do we do now!?" He yelled into the nothingness. Sam had known every moment of his life. How it would happen, and when. But because of Taurtis' impulsive gesture, he suddenly jumped the track of fate and everything from that instant on was wrong and new. He couldn't see. He couldn't move. Yet, he was... happy. Ice began to form around him. "Ah! We have to get you.. out of here!" The Onyx exclaimed. Taurtis stood behind Sam, grabbed him, and pulled him out of the ice. Taurtis, carrying Sam, looked back for a moment. "Come on." He mumbled under his breath. Taurtis carried Sam away from the mountain and into a nearby cave. Taurtis set him down there and examined the area. "Alright, this should be good for now." He mumbled. Sam sat down and ran his hand through his hair, revealing his bunny ears. "Thank you..." He said. Taurtis looked at him, stunned speechless. Fire started forming around his feet. Taurtis stomped out of the flames, startled. They made a fire and the two warmed up beside it, but Taurtis kept pacing. "What kind of Onyx am I supposed to be? Look at this! It's my fault you're stranded here. How am I gonna save you?" Taurtid panicked. "You already did." Sam said. "What!?" The confused guard exclaimed. "You already saved me." Sam said again. Taurtis sniffled and sat down next to the fire, still perturbed. The two remained silent for a moment, thinking about the fusion they performed. Taurtis stared at his gem and Sam's gem for a while. "I... I've seen gems fuse before, but I had no idea that's what it felt like. I always thought... I never realized that fusion... that'd you'd disappear like that." Sam said, trying to make conversation. "It's never like that! Whenever I've fused, it's always just been me, but bigger, I... I've never had a three eyes before." Taurtis said. "I've never had more than one! It was nice." Sam said with a small grin. Taurtis blushed. "Ha... Yeah..." He returned the smile. Sam and Taurtis later leave the cave, as the sun is coming up and it is no longer raining.
(Just imagine it's them, 'kay?)

They fused into SnowFlake Obsidian once more. Not used to this form, Snow stumbled about. He was back; he was someone and he didn't know who. But he felt he was getting the hang of his strange new form. ... And then he fell. Snow tripped and rolled down a hill. "... Ouch." Was all he had to say to that. Suddenly, a knife was pointed at Snow's face. He recoiled back towards the hill. "Ah! Don't hurt him! Don't hurt... me?" He said, slightly confused. Then, Snow realized something. The bearer of the knife was a rebel, the Pink Pearl. "It's you! The fushion..." She said. "We didn't mean to fuse! Well... well, we did this time. We'll unfuse! We, we'll..." Snow stuttered. Another Gem approached the group. "No, no, please... I'm glad to see you again." The Rose Quartz says. And there they were: Lizzie the Rose Quartz, the leader of the rebellion, and his terrifying renegade Pink Pearl, Yuki. "I don't upset you?" The confused fushion asked. "Who cares about how I feel? How you feel is bound to be much more interesting." Lizzie said. "How I feel? I feel... uh, lost... and scared... and happy. W-why am I so sure that I'd rather be this than everything I was supposed to be, and that I'd rather do this than anything I was supposed to do?" Snow asked, scared. Lizzie let out a laugh. "Welcome to Earth." She said. "C-can you tell me!? How was Taurtis able to alter fate? Or, why was Sam willing to give up everything? W-what am I!?" Snow asked, desperate to know. "No more questions. Don't ever question this." Lizzie holds Snow's hand. "You already are the answer."

-Back to real time-

"So...? What was it?" Grian asks. Snow raises an eyebrow. "The answer." He clarifies. "Love." The fushion whispers. "Wow... I knew it." Grian says with a smile. "So did I."
