9 | i lose my temper...again

"Where did Vicki say she was going?" Sheriff Forbes asked Evelyn. They had been called in for questions on Vicki's sudden disappearance.

"She didn't."

"Did she tell her brother where she was going?"

"Not that I know of."

"Is there anyone I can talk to that may know what happened to her prior to her leaving town?"

"Stefan, maybe," Evelyn shrugged. He was helping her, along with me, with some of her problems."

"What was he doing there?"

"Trying to help, he knew that Elena and I were worried about Jeremy, he was dating Vicki and she had a drug problem, so he tried to help."

"So he got involved because you and Elena asked him to?"

"We thought that by helping Vicki, he was helping our brother."

"What was her behavior like those last few days before she left?"

"She was out of it, like she was high or something."

"Any signs of aggression or violence?"

"None more than usual."

"So you believe Vicki really has left town?'

"Yeah, I do," Evelyn answered.

Jenna, Jeremy, Elena and Evelyn all left the building to stumble upon Stefan who was waiting for Elena. Elena turned to the three, "I'll meet you guys at the car.'

The three of them made their way to the car as Stefan and Elena talked.

"You okay?" Stefan asked her.

"I don't think the Sheriff suspected anything," Elena explained. "Jeremy had no memory at all. All he knew was what Damon made him know."

"Thank you," he said before asking the question Evelyn had seen coming. "How is she?"

"She's...been better," Elena nodded. "She has stayed cooped up in her room this whole time, this was her first time out since... Anyway, it's been rough, but she'll pull through, I know she will."

He nodded.

"I can't do this Stefan. Every time I look at Matt or Jeremy, all I think is that Vicki is never gonna come back. And they'll never know why. Around you people get hurt and people die. I can't I just...it's just too much...."

"Why don't we go somewhere and talk about it," he suggested.

"No, Stefan, you have to stay away from me."

Elena made her way into the car and Evelyn was the first to speak. "Careful El..." she mumbled with her head against the window. "You might just lose him forever."

Evelyn's motivation had been deteriorating more than it already had. Every time she was even in the same room as Jeremy she had to fight the urge to cry.

"You're wallowing," Jenna informed Elena.

"So are you."

"My wallow is legitimate," Jenna pointed out and Evelyn frowned. Another person dead. "I was dumped."

"Well Logan's a jerk," Elena pointed out.

"You didn't get a brush-off email that said: 'I'm leaving town. See ya.'"

"Wanna keep it down over there?" Jeremy's voice piped up.

"Why? What are you doing?" Jenna asked.

"Homework." This caused all three of the girls' heads to snap towards him.

"Since when do you do homework?" Elena inquired.

"I have to finish this. I'm way behind and I have a quiz tomorrow so..."

Elena and Jenna then look at each other, surprised, "What do you think? Alien?"

"Some sort of replicant."

"He can hear you," Jeremy pointed out.

Evelyn made her way back to her room, Elena following up behind her. Some time later, Bonnie joined them. Elena was under the covers whereas Evelyn was on top of them, laying on her side.

"You up?" Bonnie asked Elena, knowing well enough not to bother Evelyn. These moods were a common theme for her.

"No," Elena mumbled from under the covers, which Bonnie changed by uncovering her, "no! No!"

"Why haven't you called me back?"

"I'm sorry."

"Are you gonna stay there forever?'

"Yep."

"Move over," Bonnie said before sitting on the bed, "I'm officially worried. What's going on?"

"I'm tired of thinking...of talking I..." she shook her head

"Can I get a one-line version so I can at least pretend to be helpful?" Bonnie requested.

"Stefan and I broke up."

"I'm so sorry. Are you okay?" she asked. "Right stupid question. I know I've been kind of MIA when you need me the most. I suck."

"Can you take your pity party to another room?" Evelyn muttered. "I don't have it in me to deal with the whining."

"You don't mean that," Elena said in response.

"Don't I though?" Evelyn replied, stuffing her face into a pillow.

"You wanna make it up to me," Elena asked Bonnie, "Get my mind off of it."

"Just remember you asked for it."

Bonnie shifted slightly before grabbing one of Evelyn's pillows. She sat up at this, intrigued by what the girl was doing.

"I need to swear you two to secrecy."

"It's kind of a bad week for that kind of stuff," Elena responded.

"Swear, 'cause I'm not supposed to be showing you this."

"OK, I swear."

"There's no windows open, right?"

"Right."

"There's no fan. No air conditioning."

"None. What are you doing?"

"Grams just showed me this," she grinned. "You're gonna love it. You ready?"

"Bonnie what's going on?"

Bonnie cut open the pillow and began to levitate a feather in front of Elena. Several more began to float and Elena looked on in awe.

"It's true guys," Bonnie laughed a little. "Everything my Grams told me. It's impossible and it's true. I'm a witch."

"I believe you," Elena nodded as the feathers fell back to the bed.

"I already knew," Evelyn shrugged before her phone started to ring.

She groaned before grabbing it off the night stand and answering reluctantly, "Hello?"

"You need to come over," Damon demanded from the other line.

Evelyn shifted in her bed so her legs were dangling over, "Why would I do that?"

"It's Stefan's birthday, the big 162," he explained. "Except he's all moppy and I don't have it in me to deal with it."

"I don't want-"

"Evelyn."

"I'm not coming, Damon," she replied before hanging up.

The phone immediately rang again and Evelyn answered it, "I swear to God, Damon-"

"If you don't come over on your own, I'll drag you here myself."

"Do it then," she suggested. "Good luck getting passed Jenna, my windows locked." She hung up the phone again and then it started ringing once more and she groaned.

"Who is it?" Bonnie inquired.

"A pest," she replied before answering the phone again. "Screw off."

"I'd love to," he responded. "If you would just come over we can arrange-"

"I'm not coming over."

"Just come over."

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

"Ye-"

"If I come over, will you leave me alone?"

"The chances of that will increase."

"Fine," she huffed before standing up and grabbing her bag along with her keys. "I'm on my way."

"Where are you going?" Elena asked once she was off the phone.

"That's none of your business," Evelyn replied simply before making her way to the Salvatore Boarding House.

Evelyn knocked on the door and waited for a response when an unfamiliar voice sounded, "It's open!" She entered the house and closed the door behind her to find a girl standing in a towel.

"Is Stefan here?" Evelyn asked immediately.

"He's in the shower," she answered and Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "You must be Elena."

"Nope," she replied. "I was under the impression that Stefan was moping around, clearly I was wrong so I'm gonna go."

She shook her head, "It's not like that."

"Right, because that explains the whole you're in a towel he's in the shower thing."

"We're just friend," she shook her head, "Anyway, who are you?"

"I'm Evelyn."

"Oh," she nodded as though it all made sense. "The sister."

"That would be the one."

"I'm Lexi."

"What exactly are you doing here?"

"I always visit on his birthday."

"Then I guess I can go since the whole birthday thing has been covered," she smiled tightly, turning around, "Bye."

"Didn't you need to talk to Stefan?"

"Damon called saying he was in a mood, at the fault of Elena, I assume," she explained. "He told me I should come cheer him up or whatever, but because you're here, that's my excuse to leave, and I thank you."

She seemed to find this amusing, "You've got spunk. I like you."

"Hmm, thanks."

"You should stay though," Lexi suggested. "it is his birthday after all."

"He's had plenty, I don't think this one changes anything."

"Well, I won't force you to stay, but he only turns 18 once." Some people turn eighteen more than once.

"I don't want to get one of his, 'everything is going to be okay,' speeches, so I'll pass. You can tell him I stopped by though." Evelyn turned to walk out the door but as she reached for the knob, Damon walked in.

"Perfect. You," he said looking at me, "There's a party tonight, you're going and you," he said looking at Lexi, "You are as well, drag Stefan along."

"I'm not going to a party," Evelyn replied.

"Yes you are."

"You can't make me."

"You seem to forget I'm a vampire," he reminded her. "I may not be able to compel you but I can scare you into going."

"And how do you suppose you are to scare me into going?"

"I'll get creative."

"Goodbye Damon," she replied. "Goodbye Lexi, have fun with whiny Stefan."

Evelyn made a pit spot at the Mystic Grill. She stopped her car but then she saw Tyler. She moved to start the car again but the damage had already been done.

He saw her in the car and waved before he started walking toward her. She bit her lip before hopping out and meeting him halfway.

"Hey," she greeted.

"Hey," he said smiling. "Haven't seen you since the whole Vicki thing."

Evelyn nodded uncomfortably, "Yeah, it's been awhile."

"Are you okay?" he asked, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion.

"I'm fine," she nodded. "Just hungry is all. I'll see you at school."

"Are you going to the party tonight?"

"Not really in the partying mood."

"Alright then," he nodded. "I'll see you later."

She smiled tightly before entering the Grill, ordering her food and taking a seat. She had been staring at the table, waiting for her food when someone slid into the booth across from her, pulling her from her thoughts.

"Come to the party with me," Tyler suggested abruptly taking Evelyn by surprise.

"What?"

"Come to the party with me."

"You're serious?"

"Yeah."

"I don't know," she shook her head. "I wasn't really planning on going."

"Just come for a little bit," he tried. "If you want to leave, I'll take you home."

"Okay," she agreed as her food arrived.

"I'll pick you up around seven?" he inquired and she nodded. He slid out of the booth, leaving her to herself.

As soon as Evelyn arrived at home, she was bombarded with questions. "Where were you?" Elena asked immediately. "And who were you with?"

"What took you so long?" Jenna asked.

"One at a time," Evelyn suggested as she dropped her bag on the couch.

"Where were you?" Elena restated.

"The Grill," she answered.

"With who?"

"Tyler asked me to the party."

"He did?" Jenna gaped, "What did you say?"

"I said I would go with him," she shrugged. "Now please, calm down. I'm gonna go take a nap, wake me up at 6."

Her nap was short lived seeing as the door slammed open to reveal a very pissed off Jeremy. Groggy, Evelyn sat up and looked at him, "What?"

"Tyler? Really?" he demanded. "How could you go out with someone like that, he's an asshole."

"Relax," she suggested.

"You just had to go out with the one person I hate the most?" he asked. "You can't go out with him!"

"I was never a fan of Vicki, but I never said anything to you," she reminded him. "And Tyler just asked if I would go with him, I'm not even sure if it's a date. For all I know it's just an outing between two friends."

"I won't let you."

"Get out of my room, Jeremy." He let out a huff of disapproval and walked out, leaving Evelyn to her nap.

Evelyn was once again awoken from her nap when Elena shoved her off the bed and onto the floor, "It's 6 o'clock."

"Thanks," Evelyn groaned. Elena left the room and Evelyn forced herself up.

After her shower, she threw on her ripped jeans and Violent Femmes shirt before throwing on her shoes. She made her way downstairs, pulling her hair into a ponytail.

The smell of cookies invaded her senses and she ran into the kitchen to see Elena and Jenna eating them. "There better be some for me."

"Always," Elena replied, holding the plate of cookies out for her to take some.

"You aren't going?" Evelyn inquired, taking in her sister's attire.

"I can't be around Stefan right now."

"Oh come on Elena. You love him," Evelyn pointed out. "Forgive him already, you've punished him enough."

"He lied to me."

"And so did I," she reminded her. "He was just trying to keep you safe. Now go get changed, I'm not asking."

She groaned but ultimately went upstairs to get ready. Evelyn placed a cookie in her mouth as the doorbell rang. She made her way over and opened the door to reveal Tyler. "Hey," she greeted after she pulled the cookie from her mouth. "Let me just grab my bag."

Evelyn grabbed her bag from the kitchen before rejoining Tyler at the door, "Let's go." He smiled before walking with her to the car. He opened the passenger door for her, "Thank you."

The ride to the Grill was quiet. It wasn't awkward though, it was comfortable. He pulled into the full parking lot and hopped out, opening her door for her.

They entered the Mystic Grill together and appeared to draw more attention than intended.

Evelyn noticed Lexi standing at the bar and talking to Damon. She touched Tyler's arm to grab his attention. "I'll be right back," she explained. "I wanna say hi to someone real quick."

"Hey," she greeted as she approached the girl. "It's nice seeing you when you're actually wearing clothes, towel girl."

She shrugged, "I've been called worse."

"I'm assuming you managed to drag Stefan here?"

"You'd assume correctly."

"Is he still moody?"

"Very much so."

"Where is-" but before she could finish her sentence, the Sheriff approached and injected Lexi with vervain. She turned to Damon and thanked him for the supplies.

"What are you doing?" Evelyn gaped. Damon tried to grab her arm but she was quick enough to slip past him. "Sheriff, stop!" Evelyn was outside with them, "You can't do this!"

"Go back inside, Elena," the Sheriff suggested.

"I'm not Elena."

The Sheriff let out a sigh and opened her mouth to say something when Lexi flung the officers holding her to the side. The Sheriff shot Lexi in the chest with the wooden bullets but it had very little impact.

Damon appeared a moment later, staking Lexi through the heart. Evelyn gasped, "No!"

"Why?" Lexi whispered as her face turned grey.

"It's part of the plan," he replied, pulling the stake out as she fell to the floor.

"No," Evelyn shook her head and she knelt down next to Lexi. "No."

She didn't hear the conversation between Damon and the Sheriff but she was perfectly aware of when Damon placed his hand on her shoulder. "Don't touch me," she hissed and pulled his hand away. He bent down and picked Lexi up before walking away.

"Evie..." Elena trailed off before crouching down next to her. "Evelyn, are you okay?"

She shook her head, "I'm fine."

"Let's get you out of here," Stefan suggested.

"No, I can't," Evelyn shook her head. "I came with Tyler and I've barely spoken to him since we arrived."

"I'll tell Tyler that you left," Elena replied. "You need to go home."

Evelyn shook her head but Stefan helped her to her feet. He guided her to the car and drove her home.

He pulled into the driveway and turned to her, "Are you gonna be okay?"

"Are you?" she countered before getting out and walking inside.

Evelyn was growing tired of everyone asking her how she was doing. She just wanted it all to stop. All the pain. All the loss. And there was one common thing among everything that had gone wrong.

Damon.

Before she could rest and think things over, she was driving to the Salvatore Boarding House. She entered the building immediately and made her way through the house to find him.

"Told you I'd take care of it," Damon spoke but when he turned around, a look of surprise was clear on his face. "You should be home. Resting."

Evelyn walked over to him before pulling the stake she had hidden behind her back and stabbed him in the gut. He looked up at her in shock and muttered, "You missed."

"No," Evelyn shook her head, twisting the stake. "You saved my life, I'm sparing yours. And now?" she inquired, pulling away and letting him fall. "We're done."
