7 | i'm not legally required to do this

"What are you?" Elena demanded. "What are you?"

"You know," he concluded, letting his hands fall at his sides.

"No, I don't," she shook her head.

"Yes, you do, or you wouldn't be here."

"It's not possible," she replied. "It can't be."

"Everything you know and every belief that you have is about to change," he explained, "Are you ready for that?"

"What are you?" she repeated.

"I'm a vampire," he answered honestly and Evelyn rolled her eyes. Way to ease her into it.

"I shouldn't have come," she shook her head as she turned to leave.

"No. Please," he begged, going after her but leaving the door open.

"No. No. How did you do that?"

"Please don't be afraid of me."

"Let me go."

"No. Elena, there's things that you have to know and understand."

"Let me go!"

"Elena, please," he begged one last time before a car started and drove off.

He came back inside a moment later, shoulders slumped forward and defeat clear on his face. Evelyn frowned, "She'll come around."

"And if she doesn't?" he asked

"Then you'll know you did everything in your power to convince her you're the good guy," she answered.

"What?" he asked, obviously not understanding what she was talking about.

"You, sir, are going to get off your sorry behind and haul ass over to my house to beg Elena for a chance to explain," Evelyn informed him. "Ask her to give you a day, a day to explain and if she decides that at the end of that day she doesn't want anything to do with you, leave her alone. Also, don't tell her I know, it'll only make things worse."

"I don't know if that's such a-" he began but Evelyn cut him off.

"Don't make me drag you out by your ear."

"Okay, okay," he frowned. "Fine, I'll go."

"Good," she nodded. "I'm sleeping in your bed tonight, by the way. My back is starting to hurt from the couch." She had been sleeping on the couch because most of the rooms were filled with crap from over the years and Evelyn would not sleep in Zach's room even if he's dead. That's just too weird. And she wasn't going anywhere near Damon's room.

"You could just go home," he pointed out.

"Damon is still a problem," she countered. "I have his ring and he's bound to show up here at some point. We know he won't hurt me."

"Alright, fine," he nodded. "Call me if he shows up."

"Go," she ordered. "Don't leave Elena waiting."

As soon as the door shut, she grabbed the journal she had been reading in the other room and ran up to his room. She plopped down on the bed and flipped to the page she was on but as soon as she started reading, she was out.

Evelyn woke up to the sound of blasting music from downstairs and two familiar voices echoed through the house. She got up quietly and tip-toed down the stairs, hopeful that the loud music meant Damon couldn't hear her.

"I am so over Tyler, so over him," Vicki announced. "I knew from the beginning that I was only a piece of ass to him, but I thought maybe if he got to know me better, he might see something more. But no." She fell to the floor with a laugh, "Now, Jeremy, on the other hand, that's all he's ever seen in me is something more, and I like that."

"Jeremy, huh?" Damon inquired. "Elena's brother?"

"Yeah, yeah," she nodded, running through the house. "So, Elena used to date my brother, and they were always together, so Jeremy would always be hanging around and crushing on me and..." she trailed off. "Hey, why don't you have a girlfriend? You're, like, totally cool and so hot."

"I know," he grinned.

"Don't you wanna be in love?"

"I've been in love," he replied, most likely referring to Katherine, "It's painful and pointless and overrated." He made a good point.

"Except when it isn't," he exclaimed.

"No more talking," he suggested, grabbing her hand. "Let's dance."

The song switched from the upbeat ones to a slow song and Damon pulled her close, rocking her slowly.

"My mom spends most of her time in Virginia beach with Pete. He drives trucks," she told him, tears running down her face. "I don't remember my dad, but from what I gather, he's not worth remembering." Evelyn frowned slightly at this.

"Your life is so pathetic," Damon informed her and she nodded.

"Yeah. I mean, I'm the screwed-up one," she went on. "Matt's got it so easy. He's the golden boy. I mean, he's gonna get a football scholarship and marry Elena and have a lawn mower and some babies, and when I think of my future, I just come up blank."

Evelyn's sympathy flew out the window at this. Matt never had anything easy. Not only did he have to raise himself but his older sister as well because she was a drug addict who had no self control. The only reason Matt's life didn't completely suck was because he fought to make sure it wasn't awful and he hid his suffering.

"You are so damaged."

"Yep," she agreed.

"I mean, you don't have one hint of self-esteem."

"Nope," she shook her head. "None."

"I think I know what can help you."

"What's that?"

"Death." Evelyn shot up at this but it was too late.

Her neck snapped in a second and Damon looked up at her in surprise, "You killed her."

"Yes and no."

"What does that mean?" Evelyn demanded.

"She had my blood in her system."

"And that means what exactly?"

"She is going to wake up and be a vampire," he explained. "Well, in transition that is, she has to feed on a human to complete the process."

"You turned a drug addict into a vampire!" Evelyn shouted. "I know very little about vampirism but something tells me that's an awful idea!"

Before he could respon, Vicki let out a groan from where she laid on the floor. "What happened?" she asked, rubbing her head. "We were dancing, and then..."

"Then I killed you," Damon filled in the blanks.

"What?"

"You're dead."

"I'm dead?"

"Yeah, well, let's not make a big deal out of it," he rolled his eyes. "You drank my blood, I killed you, and now you have to feed in order to complete the process."

"You're wasted," she concluded.

"You don't wanna be out there all alone," he told her. "You're about to get really freaky."

"Okay, I had a really good time," she replied. "I just wanna go home."

"You're gonna start craving blood, and until you get it, you're gonna feel very out of it," he pointed out. "You have to be careful."

"Come on, move," she pleaded.

"See?" he inquired, steadying her. "You're already starting to fall apart."

"And I'm going home now."

"Ok, fine. I'm just warning you," he waved off when something seemed to register. "Actually, you know what? You should go. In fact, if I were you, I would stop by your boyfriend Jeremy's house."

"Yeah, whatever," she rolled her eyes.

"Bye," he waved, "Tell Elena I said hi and if you see Stefan, tell him to call me."

"You can't leave," Evelyn told her, blocking her from the exit.

"And what are you going to do about it Gilbert?"

Evelyn raised an amused eyebrow, "Not let you leave. I thought that was obvious enough." Before she could do anything else, she was up against the wall with her arms pinned above her head.

She groaned at the impact and looked in front of her to see that Damon was the culprit. Vicki had disappeared and Evelyn scowled, "Screw you, Salvatore."

"Since your offering," he replied and she pushed him away from her. "Oh come on," he rolled his eyes, following her to the other room, "Live a little."

"Ironic, coming from the dead guy," she replied, pulling out her phone.

"Are you really going to tell on me?"

She placed the phone to her ear and it rang three times before he answered, "Hello?"

"Vicki is heading to Jeremy," she told him quickly. "Damon turned her."

"He did what?" Stefan shouted into the phone.

"Don't let her near Elena or Jeremy."

"Is Damon still there?"

"At least until the sun sets he is," she answered before hanging up the phone and stuffing it into her pocket.

"Do you know where my ring is?" Damon asked as Evelyn made her way upstairs. "Where are you going?"

She continued to ignore him as she made her way to Stefan's room, plopping down on the bed and opening the journal.

"Does Stefan know you read his innermost thoughts?" Flipping the page, Evelyn continued to ignore him. "Really, you're gonna play this game?" She rolled her eyes. "You used to do this all the time and it never worked." She looked up at him with a raised eyebrow, "Okay, it always worked."

She smiled in satisfaction when her phone rang, "Hello?"

"It's Vicki," Stefan told her. "She ran away. Meet me in the woods, we need to find her before she hurts anyone."

"Now you want my help?" Evelyn asked as she closed his book and hopped off his bed.

"Would you just get out here?"

"On my way," she replied before slipping her shoes on.

Damon had vanished and she was grateful for this as she made her way to the woods.

"Vicki, thank god," Evelyn breathed out once she found the girl. Never did she think she would say that. "What are you doing out here?"

"I remember," she explained, rubbing her temples. "What he said. Stefan at the hospital and on the rooftop. It's all coming back."

"He shouldn't have done this," Evelyn replied. "I'm sorry."

"He said I need to feed," she seemed to remember. "What happens if I don't?"

"You'll fade quickly..." she explained, remembering what Stefan had told her. "And then it'll all just be over."

"I'll be dead," she concluded.

"I'm sorry."

"I don't want this."

"I know," Evelyn frowned. "It'll be ok. You're gonna be ok. I'm going to help you."

"Is it better? Will I be better?" she asked. "I wanna go home. Will you take me home?"

"Yeah," she nodded. "Let's go."

Before Evelyn could help her, however, three gunshots were fired into her back and she gasped in pain. She fell to the floor as her whole body felt like it was on fire.

"No!" someone had shouted and it vaguely sounded like Stefan but Evelyn couldn't be sure. She could see Damon arrive, biting into the man's neck.

As soon as he was down, he ran over to Evelyn. "I'm going to take them out," he told her before he reached his fingers into her wound and she groaned in pain. "Relax," he tried, brushing her hair behind her ear as he moved onto the next one. "It'll be okay."

She shook her head as she bit down on her tongue. He pulled out the next one and she tried her best not to scream.

Stefan knelt down next to her, his wrist bleeding. "Drink," he suggested, "You'll feel better."

Evelyn nodded and he placed his wrist to her mouth. She drank his blood eagerly, the pain fading. He pulled his wrist away and she wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, pushing herself against the tree.

"It's wood," Damon told them, holding a bullet in his blood covered hand. "They know." He looked between Evelyn and Stefan, "I'm going to need my ring back."

"On one condition," Evelyn began. "You have to promise you will not hurt anyone else. And if you do, I will have no problem cutting your hand off and taking it back." Damon opened his mouth to respond when something caught her eye, "Vicki! No!"

Vicki looked down at what Evelyn now recognized as Logan Fell, "I'm sorry."

"Oops," Damon said before snatching the ring from Evelyn's hand and vamps speeding off.

"Stefan," Evelyn spoke up as she pushed herself to her feet, "What is that?" She pointed at an object a few feet away and he walked over, picking it up.

"Looks like a compass."

She took it from him and opened it. The needle on the compass spun until it landed on Stefan. Her eyes widened slightly as she looked up, "This isn't good."
