23 | ring, ring, it's depression calling
"You have to understand, I wasn't myself," Stefan tried to explain weakly.
"If Damon hadn't shown up when he did, I would be dead," she reminded him. "Why is that so hard for you to understand?"
"The blood..." he began. "It made me a different person."
"The funny thing is the worst part of all of this isn't that I almost died," she laughed. "It's that you lied to me."
He looked up at her in despair and she looked away, not ready to forgive and walking away. "Where are you going?" Elena asked, confused as to why she had her keys.
"Anywhere but here."
Evelyn made her way out of the house, ignoring Damon's look as she left.
"Can we talk?" Tyler asked, sliding into the booth opposite of Evelyn at the Grill.
"Nope," she answered simply, standing up and leaving her perfectly good burger behind.
Evelyn made her way out of the Grill but Tyler wouldn't give up. "Please, just listen."
She turned around and faced him, anger evident on her face. "What could you possibly have to say that won't anger me anymore than I already am?"
"I didn't mean for it to happen," he shook his head. "I was drunk and-"
"Are you really about to make an excuse?" she scoffed. "Being drunk doesn't make you do things you wouldn't do when you were sober. Yes, it causes poor judgement but that doesn't excuse the fact that you kissed Matt's mom! Which is absolutely disgusting on so many levels."
"I'm sorry," he apologized. "Please, give me another chance."
"I can't," she shook her head, looking down at her feet.
"It was a mistake. I lov-"
"No," she shouted, all of the anger she had bottled up inside bubbling over, "Don't say you love me. If you had loved me, this never would have happened!"
A crowd had started to form and she could hear people whispering around them but she was too enraged to care.
"Don't say that. Of course I love you."
"Obviously not enough," she whispered and she could tell it hit him hard. "I have to go," she told him before pushing through the crowd that had formed and holding back her tears.
She got in her car and hopped in the driver's seat, locking the doors. She took a shaky breath in and started the car.
Evelyn drove mindlessly and wound up at the Salvatore Boarding House. Turning off her car, she stared at the door through her car and couldn't hold back anymore.
She rested her forehead on the top of the wheel and burst into tears, no longer in control. Her heart took over her brain and let everything she had been holding in, out.
After a few minutes she pulled herself together. She looked in the mirror of her car and cleaned up any sign of her minor breakdown before getting out of the car.
She entered the house and looked around for a sign that someone was there.
"Evie?" her twin's voice came from the other room.
"Yeah?" she responded back before finding her.
"You need to forgive him."
"What?" she asked in surprise.
"You have to tell him you forgive him," Elena begged.
"You want me to lie?" she inquired. "That would be very hypocritical of me."
"He's not drinking the blood I brought him. Damon said it's because he feels guilty."
"And you want me to clear his conscience?"
"Yes, please," she begged. "For me."
"Of all of the people, I thought you would understand it the most but I guess I was wrong," Evelyn turned away from her and started walking away.
"Wait!" she shouted at her retreating body, "Understand what?"
She shook her head and looked over her shoulder, "Forgiving him for this is the same as saying it would be okay if it happened again. Just like with Scott."
Her face paled and guilt washed over her face, "Evie, I'm so-"
"Save it for someone who wants to hear it," she cut her off before walking away.
And that's another day Evelyn can mark off as awful.
After a few hours of self-loathing, she received a frantic call from Elena. "Yes?" she answered nonchalantly.
"It's Stefan. He's missing."
Evelyn sat up in her bed, "What do you mean he's missing?"
"I left his cell unlocked for when he was ready to come out. He left his daylight ring behind."
"What happened before?"
"Stefan told me the story about how he turned but he never finished telling me, Damon did. Stefan was the one who made Damon turn."
"Uh," Evelyn began, scratching the back of her head, "Do you know where it happened? Maybe he went there because that's where he made what he feels was the wrong choice."
"Yes, I do. Thank you," she said before hanging up.
Evelyn laid back down on her bed and slung her arm over her eyes. She tried to fall asleep but it was rendered useless.
There was a whooshing sound and she looked up to see Stefan. "I really need to start locking that window," she pointed out.
"I came here to-" he began but she stopped him.
"Let me guess? Make more excuses? I've really had enough with people's crappy excuses."
"I'm sorry," he apologized, regret written all over his face.
"Sorry doesn't fix everything."
"I didn't mean to hurt you," he explained. "I would never do that on purpose."
"I know you wouldn't."
"I know I lied but...I don't know. I shouldn't have. It was stupid."
"You got one thing right."
"Please forgive me."
"Not yet," she said, shaking her head, "You should go."
"I really am sorry."
"I know."
He left her room through the window and she made her way to the bathroom. She locked the door and opened the medicine cabinet, pulling out her medication.
She dumped the pills into her hand and closed the bottle, placing it back in the medicine cabinet. She walked across the bathroom and stood above the toilet. She stared into her palm where the pills rested.
Evelyn dropped them in and they made a tiny splash as they connected with the water. She flushed the toilet before making her way back to her room and going to sleep.
