22 | faith, trust, and pixie dust

"Stefan's off his rocker," Damon announced through the phone and Evelyn closed her locker.

"What?"

"He's high on human blood."

"He told me he was fine."

"He lied," he replied. "Someone stole blood bags from the hospital and compelled the person on staff to forget about it."

Evelyn frowned, "Maybe another vampire is in town."

"He's not okay, Evelyn," he explained. "Don't listen to him."

"Damon-"

"You have to trust me on this one."

"Fine," she huffed before hanging up and letting out a sigh.

Evelyn turned to leave but someone blocked her path. She looked up to see Tyler looking down at her. She scoffed and pushed past him but he followed after her.

"Please talk to me," he requested. "Let me explain."

"Explain what? That you're a manwhore?" she inquired. "No need, I already know."

"Evely-"

Evelyn turned to stop him in his tracks, "Not today, I can't take anything else so please, just not today."

He stared at her for a moment but nodded. She turned to leave, tears welling in her eyes. As she made her way to the bathroom, she wasn't sure she would make it before she cried when someone pulled her into a classroom.

She reached into her pocket instinctively before she realized that it was Alaric. And that she was safe.

"I can't do this," she told him, dropping her bag on the ground. "I don't-How am I supposed to see him everyday?"

"You just have to get through it," he told her. "Get to a point where you can forgive him."

"Forgive him?" she scoffed. "I'm supposed to forgive him?"

"Not for him, for yourself."

"What?"

"Forgiving someone for something they did to you will help you more than you know. It'll be like a weight lifted off of your shoulders," he explained. "I'm not saying you have to forget, but forgive, when you're ready."

"Is that what you did with Damon?"

"Yes," he answered honestly.

"Thank you," she said quietly, wiping away her tears.

"Anytime," he said, nodding before she left.

"Hey," Stefan said, stopping her in the hall.

"What do you want, Stefan?" Evelyn asked, turning to face him.

"Elena told me what happened."

"She did?" she asked, slightly annoyed that she was telling him her personal business. Not that that was anything new.

"I asked her why you looked upset yesterday and she told me," he explained. "He shouldn't have done that, he's a dick."

"I'm aware. I have to get to class," she told him before trying to leave but he stopped her. She took a deep breath and turned to him calmly, "What?"

"Are you okay?"

"I would be a lot better if people would stop asking me that," she informed him. "Now please, leave me alone."

Blocking him out, she made her way back to Alaric's classroom. After school ended she threw all her stuff into her locker and got to her car.

She got in and started the engine as her phone rang. "Hey," she greeted, answering the phone.

"Hey, the interviews for Miss Mystic Falls are today," Elena explained. "Are you coming?"

"I can't."

"Why?"

"It's too much," she answered. "Besides, who would escort me anyway?"

"You can find someone," she told her. "I'm sure Damon would do it, if you asked."

"I'm sorry Elena, I just can't. I'm sorry."

She hung up the phone and drove straight to the Salvatore Boarding House.

"Damon!" Evelyn shouted, as she entered the house. Despite how often she went there, she still had trouble navigating her way through. She turned right but bumped into someone. "Damon-" she began but when she looked up she realized it was definitely not him. She scowled, "What are you doing here?"

"Nice to see you too, Evelyn," John greeted smugly, "You've been dodging me."

"You got one thing right. What are you doing here?"

"I was discussing this town's vampire problem with Damon."

"Get out before I kill you," she said calmly, not in the mood for his bullshit.

"I second that," Damon spoke up from behind her.

"I'm leaving, you can relax," he told them before he left.

"Why are you here?" Damon asked curiously.

"Well, Stefan and Elena are off doing whatever they hell they're doing to prep for Miss Mystic. I assumed you weren't busy, but if you are, I can go."

"I'm not busy," he said, furrowing his eyebrows as he eyed her, "What about the Lockwood boy? Aren't you two a thing?"

"No, that's...that's over."

"So why come here?"

"I need to get my mind off some things."

"I know something that can help." Evelyn raised an eyebrow at him in surprise. "Oh, get your head out of the gutter, I was talking about drinking."

"Right, makes more sense," she nodded, shaking her head, "What do you got?"

He handed her a bottle of bourbon, one of the cheaper ones, and a glass. Evelyn placed the glass down and opened the bottle and drank straight from it.

"That bad?" he questioned. She nodded before taking another swig.

"Damon!" Stefan's voice rang throughout the house, "Turn the music down." He appeared in the living room, Elena at his side and he looked up at her in surprise.

"Uh oh," she said jokingly, "It's the party police."

"What are you doing?" Elena inquired, disappointment clear on her face. "Get down from there."

"You're always tell me to have more fun," Evelyn reminded her, raising her hands in the air, the bottle of bourbon in hand, "Well, here I am!"

"Evelyn, come on," she tried. "Let's go home."

"I don't want to," Evelyn pouted.

"I can't take her home like this. Jenna will kill her," Elena told Stefan.

"She can stay here tonight. I'll drive her tomorrow so you don't have to worry about her."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes, I'm sure. Go home and get some rest. I'll see you tomorrow."

She smiled up at him and stood on her tiptoes planting a light kiss on his lips before mumbling something in his ear and turning to look at Evelyn.

"Bye Evie," she said. "Behave yourself."

"I always do," Evelyn responded and she walked out.

"Come down from there," Stefan suggested.

"No thank you."

"Come on Evelyn, you're going to hurt yourself."

"I won't hurt myself."

"Where did Damon go?" Stefan asked.

"Not sure," she shrugged. "Something about John, he said he would be back soon though."

"Right..."

"You should dance with me," she requested.

"Pass."

"You were all for dancing at the Founder's Party, why not now?"

"Not in the mood."

"Then leave me to my self-loathing."

He shook his head and began to walk away, "You know where the guest room is."

"Hmm," Evelyn mumbled as she took a swig from the bottle. She danced to the song far too close to the edge and her foot slipped. Before she could hit the ground, however, someone caught her.

"You really should be more careful," Damon informed the girl, a slight smirk on his face.

"Yeah, you're probably right," she agreed as he put her down, "But where's the fun in that?"

He shook his head at her before looking down at the bottle in her hand, "How much of that have you had?"

She shrugged, "Enough to be capable of consciously making semi-idotic decisions."

"And what's that supposed to mean?"

Evelyn smirked at him before placing the bottle down and took off her jacket. He raised an eyebrow at the action, but didn't protest.

"I need a distraction," she informed him. "And rather than going out and finding a stranger, I figure you're my best bet."

"Why me?"

"We've done it before," she replied. "It's basically recycling. You know, good for the planet and all."

He looked as though he were contemplating the idea, so she decided to make it easier for him. Evelyn lifted her shirt over her head and threw it at him before walking over to the stairs.

"You coming?" she mused. He dropped her shirt on the ground and nodded before following her up.

"Damon," Stefan spoke from the other side of the door. "Have you seen Evelyn?"

She fell out of bed and onto the floor. She looked up at Damon in alarm but he simply shrugged.

"I'm coming in," Stefan warned before opening the door and entering. Evelyn hid out of sight as Stefan looked around suspiciously. "Do you know where she is? We have to leave soon or we're going to be late."

"Nope, haven't seen her," Damon replied. "I'll let her know that you're looking for her if I do though." Stefan nodded slowly, looking around the room one more time before leaving.

Evelyn looked up from the side of the bed at Damon who was laughing.

"It's not funny," she pointed out, standing up. Evelyn looked around the room as she pulled her pants on, almost falling in the process. "Where's my shirt?"

"I believe it's downstairs," he answered simply. "You kind of threw it at me and I left it there."

"Great," Evelyn mumbled, rubbing her temples, "Am I just supposed to walk to the guest room shirtless? What if Stefan sees me?"

"It's not like he hasn't seen it before." Evelyn shot him a look before he explained. "You and Elena are twins, you share the same body. Or is that not how it works in that department?"

"How would I know?" she replied. "It's not like we strip down to our underwear and compare bodies."

"As hot as that sounds..." Damon trailed off.

She picked up a pillow off the floor and threw it at him but he easily caught it, "Shut up."

He rolled his eyes at her before sitting up in his bed.

"Can you use your vampire hearing to see if he's anywhere near here?" she asked him hopefully.

"Fine," he agreed, rolling his eyes. He closed his eyes and listened, a moment later opening them, "He's in the kitchen."

"Thank you," she responded quickly, grabbing her shoes off the floor.

Evelyn opened the door slowly, double checking that she was on the clear before exiting, shutting the door behind me.

She slowly walked down the hall and was almost at the guest room when Stefan walked up the stairs.

"I found something that belongs to you," he said, holding up her shirt.

She cringed slightly before coming up with an excuse, "You know, I left that here when I stayed here and I've been meaning to come back for it."

"Mmhmm," he nodded, glancing behind her. "And where would the shirt that you wore last night be?"

"Oh, that," she brushed off, slightly panicked. "It, um, burned off."

"Burned off?" he said with a raised eyebrow.

"Yep," she nodded, mentally cursing herself. "That's what I said."

"Just be careful," Stefan said before handing her the shirt.

"No judgy comments?" she inquired, taking back her shirt.

"It's not my business," Stefan pointed out. "There's a dress in the guest room for you."

"Uh, thanks," she said awkwardly before going to the guest room and changing.

"Let's go," Evelyn suggested, grabbing her bag and putting her shades on. Stefan looked up at her before grabbing his keys and walking out the door.

"There's Advil in there if you need some," Stefan said, pointing in front of her after a long moment in silence.

"Thanks," she smiled tightly before opening the compartment and pulling the bottle out. "Why do you even have this?"

"For situations like this."

"Hmm," she hummed before taking two pills out and dry swallowing.

"Elena said you aren't supposed to drink when you take your medicine," Stefan announced and she rolled her eyes. "Why did you?"

"Do you guys talk about anything other than me?"

He pulled into the parking lot and shut off the car before turning to her, "She's worried about you."

"Tell her she doesn't have to be," she said, snarkier than she had intended, before hopping out and heading inside.

Ignoring Stefan's calls out for her, she began to navigate her way through Founder's Hall. She made her way upstairs and saw Amber exiting the changing room.

"Hey, Amber," Evelyn greeted, getting her attention, "Is Elena in there?"

"Yeah," she said, "She's with some guy."

She furrowed her eyebrows in confusion but thanked her anyways before entering the room.

"He has no idea what normal is, his entire existence isn't normal," Damon explained as Elena sat on the couch in disbelief. "Normal to a vampire is drinking human blood but he spent all this time fighting it when he should have been learning to control it and now it's controlling him instead."

"I can't believe this," Elena shook her head. "I mean, it's Stefan that we're talking about here."

"Stefan on human blood Elena. He'll do anything, he'll say anything because he's not gonna want to stop," he pointed out. "Trust me."

"This is all my fault," she frowned. "I knew he was off. Why couldn't I figure it out?"

"What's going on in here?" Stefan asked as he entered.

"I was just filling Elena in on your extra-curricular activities," Damon informed him. "I told Evie all about it yesterday."

"What are you talking about?" Stefan replied with a laugh.

"We know about the blood, Stefan," Elena explained.

"I'm uh, I'll be downstairs...drinking," Damon excused before leaving.

"I was going to tell you," Stefan smiled.

"When?"

"I'm fine," Stefan said looking between Elena and Evelyn, "I'm fine, the blood, it doesn't change anything."

"It's changing you," Elena pointed out while Evelyn just kept her mouth shut.

"Why? Because I kept it a secret from you?" he asked. "Come on Elena, look, giving the way you're reacting right now, can you really blame me for doing that?"

"Are you hearing yourself right now?" she scoffed. "You've been stealing blood and lying and you say that everything's fine? Everything's not fine, Stefan!"

"So what, so you and Damon all of a sudden have everything figured out then?"

"This feels like a personal conversation," Evelyn announced, scratching her neck awkwardly, "I'm just gonna go."

"No, no. Stay," Elena ordered before turning to Stefan. "It's not about Damon. It's about what's happening to you."

"I know and I'm telling you that I'm fine," he told her. "I'm fine. Please, come on. Elena I thought you...I thought you believed in me."

There was a knock on the door before it opened to reveal Carol Lockwood.

"Elena, let's go," she said, "The line-up's starting."

"I just...I need a minute."

"You're not even dressed yet," she pointed out, "Escorts wait downstairs, Stefan."

Stefan looked at the girls for a moment before walking out, Carol following behind him.

"What am I gonna do?" Elena asked Evelyn.

"You're going to put your dress on and get your butt out there."

"But Stefan-"

"You can deal with Stefan once this is all over, you focus on getting down those stairs."

"I'm sorry..." she shook her head. "I can't."

"What-Elena!" she exclaimed but the girl was already gone.

"You have got to be kidding me," Evelyn mumbled as her eyes fell on the dress that Elena was supposed to wear. "She owes me big time."

After fixing up her hair, she joined Caroline at the top of the stairs.

"Elena!" she breathed out. "There you are. You're almost up."

"Not Elena," she replied before she stood at the top of the stairs.

"Miss Elena Gilbert, escorted by Mister Stefan Salvatore," Mayor Lockwood announced and Evelyn began her descent down the stairs.

Fully knowing Stefan wasn't going to be at the bottom, she had no idea what to do next as she neared the bottom when Damon suddenly appeared.

They linked arms and Damon whispered in her ear, "Aren't you supposed to be Elena?"

"Aren't you supposed to be Stefan?" she countered and he narrowed his eyes. "How did you know I wasn't Elena?"

"You two give off a different vibe," he explained as they passed by Jenna and Alaric. "Yours is so much more fun."

Evelyn smiled a little before they took their spots. "Do you have any idea how to do this dance?" he whispered as they bowed and she curtseyed.

She shrugged, "Mostly."

Putting one hand up, they circled each other and Damon mouth, 'Flirt with your eyes.' Evelyn rolled her eyes at this but couldn't fight the smile that made its way into her face. They both raised their other hand and circled each other again.

Finally, they were able to come together and finish off the rest of the dance. Damon smiled at the girl as the song came to an end.

She smiled in return before following the rest of the girl up to the stage where the mayor was waiting. "Where's Amber?" Caroline asked Evelyn.

Evelyn looked around, "No idea."

"Before I crown the winner," Mayor Lockwood began, "I'd like to offer a personal thank you to all of these young ladies for their efforts to better our community." There was a round of applause before the Mayor continued, "So, without further adieu, it is my honor to announce our very own Miss Mystic Falls, Miss Caroline Forbes!"

She looked completely surprised and turned to me with a grin. Evelyn pulled her into a hug, "Congratulations!"

"I actually won!" she beamed and Evelyn released her.

The party went on as Evelyn looked around. "So why didn't you sign up for this?" Damon asked from behind her, causing her to jump.

"I did, but I opted out," she explained. "Too much going on. Plus beauty pageants were never my thing. That was something Elena and our mom had in common, they both loved the girly stuff. I was a lot more like my dad. Seems it was meant to be that I participated even if no one knew it was me."

"Yeah, you and your sister have nothing in common. Except for the fact that you both fell for a Salvatore," he said with a smug look.

"I did not fall for you."

"Sure you didn't," he mused. "Whatever helps you sleep at night."

She rolled her eyes at this when she noticed Tyler standing across the room. Her smile dropped as she watched him, taking a moment before she snapped out of it.

"I have to go," Evelyn announced suddenly, taking Damon by surprise.

"What?" Damon asked in confusion before he turned and saw Tyler and realization dawned on his face.

"I just, I have to," she told him. "Tell Elena I'm sorry I couldn't be here for her."

He turned to look at her, "You don't have to run you know."

"You don't understand, you wouldn't."

"I may not know what happened between you two but I do know what a broken heart feels like," he reminded her. "You shouldn't stop living your life because of him. Trust me, it's miserable."

She shook her head, "It's not that simple."

"What did he do?"

"It doesn't matter, it's in the past. I just can't be around him," Evelyn brushed off and tried to walk away but he grabbed her arm, stopping her.

"What happened?" he asked with a look of genuine concern.

"He's a dick," she told him. "End of the story."

"Why won't you tell me what he did?"

"Because I know you," she replied. "You'll try to kill him or something worse. I don't need that."

"What if I swear I won't?"

"How am I supposed to believe that?"

"You just have to."

"Maybe another time," she huffed before walking outside.

As Evelyn began the walk home, she could hear voices from the woods. She made her way to where the noises were coming from cautiously.

"What?" a familiar voice demanded. "What's your name?"

"Amber," a girl replied.

Evelyn entered the woods and saw two people talking.

"Listen to me, Amber," Stefan began. "I need you to be afraid of me. I need you to run like hell do you understand me? Run, run now!"

Amber ran in the direction where Evelyn stood but Stefan camp sped in front her, stopping her in her tracks.

"You said to run!" Amber shouted in fear and Evelyn ran to catch up to them.

"I changed my mind," Stefan told her, his face transforming. He bit into her neck and she shouted.

Evelyn put her hand on his shoulder, "Stefan stop!" He threw the girl off and she slammed into a tree when more voices showed up.

"Stefan!" Elena shouted.

Evelyn found it hard to breathe as she laid on the floor. It was like the air was deflating from her lungs. She tried to focus but there was so much going on.

"Stefan, come on get control," Damon told him, "It's okay, come on. Breath through it man."

There was a thud and Elena pleaded once more, "Stefan, stop it!"

Stefan began to shout in pain and Damon spoke, "It's okay, Stefan.

"Evie," Elena shouted and Evelyn could see her sister come into view, Bonnie and Damon joining her as well.

"Can you get up?" Damon asked the girl, grabbing her hand.

"I, I can't move..." she spoke weakly. It came out barely audible. She tried to move her hand that Damon held but nothing happened.

"What's going on?" Bonnie asked.

Damon bit into his wrist, ignoring Bonnie's question and put it into the girl's mouth. She drank his blood and she slowly regained feeling throughout his body.

He helped her sit up as the police arrived. He looked back for a moment before looking at Evelyn, "You'll be okay?" She nodded and he stood up, making his way over to Sheriff Forbes.

"Evie," the Sheriff greeted after a moment, "Can I ask you some questions?" She nodded weakly before the women squatted down, "Do you know who did this?"

"No, I can't really remember much," Evelyn answered. "All I remember is hearing voices I couldn't make out and my head pounding."

"Are you sure that's all you can remember?" she asked, glancing briefly over at Damon.

"I'm sure."

She looked up at Bonnie and Elena, "And you two didn't see anything?"

"No, we just found them and then called Damon," Elena answered.

"Well, if you can remember anything else, give me a call," she requested.

"Okay."

"Why don't you girls head back to the party?"

She stood up straight and walked away, gesturing for Damon to follow.

"Okay."

Elena and Bonnie helped Evelyn stand and helped her back to the Founder's Hall. "Can you really not remember anything?" Elena asked her.

Evelyn scoffed at this, "Of course I remember. But what was I supposed to say? 'Yeah, I remember everything. My best friend's a vampire and he was so hopped up on human blood that he almost killed me.' Does that sound about right?"

"Evie-"

"It's fine. I'll get over it," she told them. "And of course if I don't," she began, walking backwards, "You can always just get Damon to compel me."

Evelyn turned forward and made her way to Founder's Hall, leaving Elena and Bonnie alone.

"Good, there you are," Alaric said once he saw Evelyn, "Jenna wanted me to get the car. Where's Elena?"

"Uh," Evelyn glanced back, "She's getting a ride from Damon."

"What happened?" Alaric asked, obviously noticing that she was upset.

"Nothing," she shook her head. "Can we just go?"

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah, I'm sure."
