19 | the green eyed monster
"Caroline..." Evelyn whispered as she gently tried to shake her awake. She let out a groan before slowly opening her eyes. "I have to go, I just wanted to let you know before I left."
"Oh, okay...," she mumbled, "See you at school?"
"Yeah," Evelyn said before getting out of the bed and grabbing her stuff.
"And Evie?" Caroline said, now in a sitting position.
"Hmm?" she asked, turned away from the door.
"I'm glad we're friends again."
"Me too," Evelyn said with a smile before leaving.
Evelyn made her way into her house as quietly as she could to come face to face with a not so happy looking Stefan. "You didn't call me."
"Because I technically never got home," she pointed out. "Therefore, I didn't have to call you."
He shot me a look before speaking, "How did he take it?"
"Surprisingly well," she shrugged. "I mean, it's not that hard to believe. This town is pretty messed up."
"You're not wrong."
"I talked to Caroline."
"You did?" he asked, his eyebrows raised in surprise.
"Yeah. Scott told me that he had compelled her to do...all the things they did," she explained. "I was angry at her for something she had no control over. I feel awful."
"You made things right, I see that as a win."
"Ah, Stefan Salvatore, always the optimist," she joked, but couldn't bring myself to smile.
"Look at it this way," he suggested. "You don't have to keep secrets from Tyler anymore and you got your best friend back."
"Yeah, I guess," she shrugged.
"Oh, come on, not even a little smile."
"I'm not in the smiling mood."
"If you won't smile, I'll have to do something you won't like," Stefan said, childish mischief written in his eyes.
"No, no, Stefan. Don't even think about it," she said, keeping a straight face.
"Too late," he said before he began tickling the girl's torso. She kicked and wiggled as an attempt to get away but it was no use.
She fell back on the couch, unintentionally pulling him with her as he continued tickling her.
"Please...stop...no...," she begged as she laughed uncontrollably.
Stefan stopped tickling her and held himself up on the couch with his hands on either side of her head. He mirrored the smile on the girl's face and looked down at her.
They stayed like this for a while and he looked like he was moving closer when her phone rang, pulling her attention away from him. She pushed him off with one hand and sat up, answering her phone with the other.
"Hey Ty," she said, letting out a breath. She stood up and walked behind the couch.
"Hey, are you doing anything right now?"
"Nope," Evelyn answered, glancing over at Stefan, who sat on the couch looking down at his hands, "Nothing. Why?"
"I was wondering if I could come over. I miss you," he answered and she could picture the cheesy grin on his face.
"I miss you too," she responded. "And of course you can come over."
"Cool, see you soon."
"Bye," she said before hanging.
Evelyn turned to Stefan who was now looking at her, "You should probably go."
"Yeah, okay," he said standing up and readjusting his shirt. "I guess I'll see you later?" he questioned, scratching the back of his neck awkwardly.
"Sounds like a plan," she responded. He nodded once more before he vamp sped out of the house.
Evelyn made her way back to the couch and sat down with a huff. "You know I never understood this movie," Tyler pointed out as he stuffed his face with popcorn. They were currently cuddling on the couch watching The Great Gatsby.
"It's a classic," she told him. "I mean obviously the book is better but you wouldn't know that because you refuse to read it."
"It's just a bunch of words on paper, what's the point when I can just watch the movie?"
"Books are always better than the movie. Always."
He rolled his eyes at the girl as the door opened revealing Elena and Stefan.
"Hey," Elena greeted cheerfully as she shut the door behind her. "What are you guys watching?"
"It's The Great Gatsby," Stefan answered for them.
"Oh, with Leonardo DiCaprio, right?" Elena asked. She had always been a sucker for a DiCaprio movie.
"It's also based on a Fitzgerald book," Stefan pointed out. "It's a classic."
Evelyn turned to Tyler who was playing with the cornels at the bottom of the popcorn bowl. "See? He gets it." He looked up at her but he didn't seem amused. "You guys can have the T.V.," she announced, standing up and handing the remote to Elena, "We're done."
She reached down for Tyler's hand and he accepted, standing up. She pulled him upstairs and plopped him down on the bed, "What's wrong?"
He shook his head, "Nothing."
"It's obviously not nothing, your whole demeanor changed when-" she began but stopped when she realized what the problem was. "Tyler, I told you. You don't need to be jealous."
"Yet I still am," he replied simply. "He's always here."
"He's dating my sister and he's my best friend."
"I know that, it's just-"
"Don't you trust me?" she asked, getting a little agitated that he didn't believe that there was nothing going on.
"You aren't the one I don't trust."
"Tyler, he is in love with my sister. Him and I are only friends. There is literally nothing to worry about!"
"I don't like him," he replied. "I'm not saying you have to stop hanging out with him or anything, I would never do that. I just don't want him around when we're together."
"I can't kick him out or anything. This isn't just my house."
"I know that, bu-"
"God Tyler, you don't listen!" Evelyn shouted in anger but quickly covered her mouth. "Oh my god, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to. It just-I'm sorry."
"It's fine." Tyler stood up before continuing, "Do you want me to leave?"
"No, no," she shook her head. "I didn't mean to shout. Maybe we can start hanging out at your place instead?"
He glanced to the side for a moment, "We don't have to. I can deal with my jealousy, eventually."
"I just don't want you to be upset every time we're together because of him."
"I'll get over it."
Evelyn smiled after a moment, "I have an idea."
"What?"
"What if you two hang out and get to know each other?"
"You're kidding?"
"No," she answered. "If you get to know him, you'll see he's actually a great guy and that you have absolutely nothing to worry about."
"If it makes you happy."
"It does."
"Okay, I'll do it."
"Thank you," she smiled before planting a kiss on his lips. "I'm gonna go see if he's okay with it."
"Great..." Tyler said, still not hooked on the idea.
"You won't regret it, I promise," she told him before walking downstairs.
"Hey Stefan," Evelyn spoke up, interrupting the two, "Can I talk to you?" Stefan looked to Elena who nodded before standing up and following me to the kitchen.
"I need you to hang out with Tyler."
"What?" Stefan asked in confusion.
"Well, you see, he doesn't exactly like you. I need him to get to know you so he can see you're a good guy, that way he doesn't get in a mood when you're around."
"Why doesn't he like me?"
Evelyn scratched her neck awkwardly, trying to find a way to word it. "He's jealous."
"Of?"
"Us. He thinks there is something going on, which obviously, there isn't."
"Right," he nodded, a blank expression on his face.
"So you'll do it?"
"If it makes you happy," he responded, the same way Tyler had.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you," Evelyn said before wrapping her hands around his waist and giving him a hug, clearly catching him by surprise.
He eventually relaxed into it and hugged her back before pulling away, "When is this happening?"
"I hadn't thought that far ahead yet," she frowned slightly. "What about now?"
"Okay, I guess. Let me go tell Elena," he agreed before leaving the kitchen.
Evelyn made her way back to her room to find Tyler laying in her bed with his legs dangling off as he stared at the ceiling. "Hey," she greeted, interrupting his thoughts.
He sat up and looked at her, "So?"
"Are you okay with now?"
"Yeah, sure," he nodded. "Although I'd much rather spend my time with you."
She smiled, "Play nice, okay?"
"Okay," he said nodding, before heading downstairs and leaving with Stefan.
"Hey El?" Evelyn said as she layed on the floor, her legs propped up on the couch.
"What's up?"
"I told Tyler I love him."
She shot up from her position on the couch and looked at her sister with crazy eyes, "You did? What did he say?"
"He said it back," she answered with a goofy smile on my face and her eyes closed.
"You really love him, don't you?"
Evelyn took her legs off the couch and spun around so her back was resting against the couch. "I do, like a lot. Not like it was with Scott. With Scott, it was more I loved the attention. But with Tyler? Everytime I see him, the world stops spinning, and it's just me and him. It's genuine love. He makes me happy."
"I'm happy that you're happy," she told her with a smile.
"I miss this."
"Miss what?"
"Us, we don't talk as much anymore. I want this back."
"I miss it too."
"Every Wednesday should be twin night. No boys, only us. No exceptions. Something tells me with everything going on, I'm going to need an anchor."
"I like that idea."
"Well of course you do," Evelyn replied with a smirk, "I came up with it."
