16 | psa. you messed up again

"What are you still doing up?" Stefan asked once he entered Evelyn's room.

"I'm not tired," she answered, not looking up at him from her desk.

"It's three in the morning and you had a long day, how are you not tired?"

"I don't know, I'm just not," she said with a shrug.

"I know you haven't been sleeping for the past few days, I've been staying here with Elena and I can hear you moving around."

She finally spun in her chair to look at him, "How often are you here?"

"That's...not important," he replied, "Don't try to change the subject."

"I just haven't been tired. You should go back to Elena before she realizes you're gone. She's a light sleeper."

"You would tell me if something was wrong though, right?"

"Right," she said looking back at herdesk, "Goodnight, Salvatore."

"Night, Evie," he said before leaving the room.

'Wanna go to the Mystic Grill today?' Tyler texted later in the morning.

'Yeah, sounds good,' she texted back. 'What time?'

'I'll pick you up at noon?'

'Sounds good.'

"Evelyn?" Elena's voice came from her door.

"Yes?"

"I was wondering, I mean, if you want to of course," she stumbled over her words. "I was wondering if you wanted to go with me to see one of our birth mother's friends?"

"Why would I want to do that?" Evelyn raised an eyebrow.

"Aren't you a little bit curious?"

"Not really, no," she shook her head. "She isn't our mom, she's just some egg donor who isn't relevant to us anymore. Why are you pushing this so much?"

"Closure, I think."

"You think?"

"Her name is Isobel."

"Huh?"

"Our birth mom."

"Oh," Evelyn said with a shrug, "have fun meeting her friend."

Evelyn made herself busy before eventually Tyler showed up to take her to the Grill.

"I'm sorry I've been kind of distant lately, a lot of stuff has been going on and I've just been distracted," Evelyn apologized as we walked into the Grill.

"You're fine," he replied, looking over at her. "If there is anything you need to talk about, I'm here."

"Thanks," she said with a small smile as they made their way to a table after ordering.

"Are you coming to the fundraiser tonight?" Tyler asked.

"What fundraiser?" she questioned.

"The one we always do."

"Right...uh," Evelyn furrowed her eyebrows. "Yeah, probably."

"I'm gonna run to the bathroom, I'll be back."

Nodding, she looked down at her food and ate the fries.

"You look tired," Stefan said, joining her at the table.

"I'm not," Evelyn said, eating another fry. "What do you want?"

"Nothing," he shrugged. "I just saw you and wanted to say hi."

"Okay then," she nodded. "Hi and bye."

"Are you okay?" he asked with furrowed eyebrows.

"I'm fine," she replied. "I'm just annoyed."

"I see that."

"So then go away."

"Fine," he said standing up, "Elena wanted me to make sure you were still coming tomorrow night."

"Tomorrow night?" she asked in confusion.

"The triple date thing?"

"Oh right, I forgot. Yeah, we'll be there."

He nodded before walking away and Tyler re-joined her.

"Hey," he said and grabbed one of my fries.

"Did I tell you about the triple date thing?" Evekyn asked.

"Yeah, we talked about it yesterday," he nodded, eyeing the girl curiously.

"Right..."

"Is everything okay?"

"Yeah, I've just been forgetting a lot of things, is all."

-

"And what do you do, Bachelor Number 3?" Mrs. Lockwood said as Evelyn entered the Grill.

"Yeah, I'm a plumber."

"Well, isn't that wonderful? We could always use more plumbers. Moving on. Number 4, 'Alaric Saltzman.' Wow. That's quite a mouthful. What do you do, Alaric?"

"I'm a teacher at Mystic Falls High."

"Oh, beauty and brains, ladies," Mrs. Lockwood mused. "This one's a keeper. What do you teach?"

"History."

"History," she repeated. "Oh, well, give us a fun fact about Mystic Falls, something crazy."

Alaric looked toward Damon who placed his hand up to his ear.

"Uh, well..." Alaric began and Carol pulled the microphone away.

"He's probably saving the best stories for his date," she said moving down to Damon, "And last, but not least, Damon Salvatore. We don't have much on you."

"Hey," Evelyn greeted once she found Stefan standing in the middle of the room.

"Well, I'm tough to fit on a card," Damon said.

"Hey," Stefan said back.

"Do you have any hobbies, like to travel?"

"Oh, yeah. L.A., New York. Couple of years ago, I was in North Carolina. Near the Duke campus, actually. I think, I think Alaric went to school there. Didn't you, Ric?"

"Yeah, 'cause I, I know your wife did," Damon said with a smirk, "I had a drink with her once. She was, she was a great girl. I ever tell you that? Cause she was, Delicious. Mmm! Mmm mmm mmm."

"Wha- Stefan!" she whisper-shouted when he walked over to Elena. Evelyn followed behind him a moment later.

"I just need some air," Elena said.

Elena got up and walked past Evelyn and she quickly followed after her to find her pacing around outside.

"What's going on?" Evelyn asked.

"Elena," Stefan said calmly.

"He killed her?" Elena inquired. "Damon was the vampire that killed her?"

"Killed who?" Evelyn asked in confusion.

"Isobel."

"As in-"

"That's the one."

"I don't know what happened," Stefan explained. "Alaric said that they never found the body."

"Oh, my god. Stefan," Elena replied, her eyes filling with tears.

"I know. I'm sorry," he apologized. "I wanted to tell you. But I just, I wanted to know more."

"I was feeling sorry for him, hoping that this whole Katherine thing would change him," she explained. "I'm so stupid."

"He doesn't know about the connection to you," Stefan replied. LI thought about confronting him, but he's already so on edge."

"Why are you protecting him?"

"Because you're not the only one hoping that he might actually change."

Evelyn turned around on her heels and made her way inside. As soon as she found Damon, she pushed him up against the wall, his shirt gripped in her hand, "You're a dumbass, did you know that?"

He rolled her eyes, looking down at her hand, "What did I do this time?"

"Did you enjoy rubbing it into Alaric Saltzman?"

"What?"

"Evie..." Stefan began from behind her.

"Am I missing something here?" Damon asked, looking between the two.

"I'm assuming Elena didn't inform you about one small detail about the woman who gave us up," Evelyn explained. "Her name was Isobel."

His face faltered at this.

"You know, I may not give a shit about her, but my sister does. You pissed her off meaning you pissed me off," Evelyn pointed out. "And I don't know if you remember the last time I was pissed at you, but it wasn't fun. So I hope you have fun reminiscing about how you killed her."

Evelyn pushed him up against the wall before walking outside to find Elena watching a man, "Elena?"

"I have a message for you," the man said.

"What?" Elena replied.

"Who are you?" Stefan asked.

"Stop looking."

"Stop looking for what?"

"She doesn't want to know you. She doesn't want to talk to you."

"Isobel?" Elena gaped.

"You need to stop looking. Do you understand?"

"She's alive? Does that mean she's a-"

"Elena, he's under compulsion," Stefan explained.

"Do you understand?" the man asked.

"Yes. I do."

"Good," the man said looking down at the street causing Evelyn to furrow her eyebrows in confusion, "I'm done now."

"Wait," Evelyn said quickly as he stepped back into the road. A large truck blared its horns but ran over the man, killing him. "Oh my God," Evekyn said before covering her mouth.

Stefan ran over to the man, Elena trailing behind him. He crouched down with a frown as Elena picked something up.

"Come on," Stefan suggested as he made his way back to where Evelyn was standing. "Let's get out of here."

"No, no," Evelyn shook her head. "I have to talk to someone."

"What?" Stefan inquired.

"Get her home," she suggested. He looked at her in confusion before taking Elena to his car.

Evelyn made her way back inside as she looked around. Her eyes landed on Matt and she saw Tyler talking to him. She walked over and tapped him on the shoulder, "Can we talk?"

"Yeah," he nodded, turning to face her. "What's up?"

"In private?" she requested and he glanced back at Matt who nodded.

"Outside?" he suggested and she agreed, grabbing his hand and guiding him out.

"Is everything okay?" he asked looking slightly worried.

"Uh, yeah," she nodded, "I just had a question."

"Okay, shoot."

"What are we?"

"Huh?"

"Like, are we talking, dating, boyfriend/girlfriend, just friends?"

"Well, what do you want us to be?"

"I don't know."

"Look, I'm willing to take this as slow or as fast as you like because in any case, as long as I'm with you or around you in any way shape or form? I'm happy," he explained. "So if this is your way of saying you want to be just friends, that's fine."

"No, no. It's definitely not that. I just wanted to know where we stood. As you know, in my last relationship, I basically made up the entire thing," she replied. "So I'm asking you, right now, what are we?"

A look of realization dawned on his face, "Evie, I like you. I really, really like you. And if you would do me the honor, I would love for you to be my girlfriend."

"I would like that," she said with a grin before standing on her toes slightly and planting a kiss on his lips before pulling away and resting her forehead on his. He smiled down at her before kissing her again, this time more passionately.

"I should go," Evelyn said slightly out of breath.

"Probably," he agreed hoarsely.

"Bye," she told after a moment, standing flat on her feet.

"Bye," he responded as he watched her walk away to her car.

Evelyn got home and everyone was already in their rooms. She made her way to her room and laid on her bed. A moment later her door opened to reveal her sister.

"Look, I know you don't care about finding Isobel, but I-" Elena began and Evelyn looked up to see her crying.

Evelyn sat up, "What happened?"

"She, I," Elena began but couldn't seem to get it out.

"Come here," Evelyn suggested, scooting over in her bed. She sulked over and sat in bed next to her. "Everything will be okay," Evelyn said, grabbing her hand, "I promise."

She nodded weakly, wiping away a stray tear. Pulling her closer to her, Evelyn held her sister and eventually, she drifted off to sleep.
