15 | whispers from the tomb

Evelyn woke up groggy and looked around to find she had been in an unfamiliar room. She noticed Ben, the bartender from the Grill, asleep in a chair at the end of the bed.

She cautiously looked around for an exit that wouldn't be noticeable but the only way out was through the door. Standing up slowly, she stepped over Ben's outstretched legs and backed up quietly to the door.

She unlocked the deadbolt as carefully as she could and turned the lock, prepared to run.

"I wouldn't," Ben suggested and she turned around to see him approaching.

"Don't try to escape," he suggested and Evelyn could see his eyes dilate as they would when compelling someone, "Don't even move. Do you understand?"

Evelyn nodded. "I understand."

Ben scoffed before grabbing a bottle of blood out of the mini fridge. She turned back and quickly, ready to run when she was stopped by a girl standing outside the door.

"Seriously?" the girl exclaimed.

"I told her not to move!" he pointed out. "I did that eye thing that you taught me!"

"And forgot the lesson about vervain!" she replied. "Her sister dates a vampire, Ben. Duh!"

The girl then pushed Evelyn up against the wall before opening the bathroom door.

"Who are you?" Evelyn asked. "What do you want?"

"Does it matter?"

She then forcefully pushed her into the bathroom, slamming the door behind her. She switched the light on and looked around the room to find Bonnie unconscious in the bathtub.

"Bonnie?" Evelyn spoke quietly, walking over to the tub and lifting her head, "Oh my god!" She grabbed a wash cloth off the rack and got it wet before placing it on her forehead, "Bonnie?"

Her eyes fluttered open, "Elena?"

"Close," she replied. "Got the wrong sister."

Bonnie laughed a little but reached for her head, "My head..."

"Come here," Evelyn suggested, helping her sit up straight.

"Oh my god!" Bonnie suddenly exclaimed. "Ben is a-!"

"Shhhh," Evelyn said, cutting her off. She gestured to her ear and pointed at the door, "They can hear." She got up and turned on the sink before rejoining Bonnie.

"I'm so stupid!" she exclaimed.

Evelyn rolled her eyes, "You're not stupid."

"What's going?" the witch asked. "Why are we here?"

"It must have something to do with the tomb and Emily's spell book," Evelyn explained.

"Spell book?"

"Damon said it could be used to open the tomb."

"Why didn't I know about any of this?"

"We were trying to keep you out of it," she informed her. "Hoping it would never come to this."

"Come to what?"

"They need a witch to break the spell and let the vampires out."

"No way!" Bonnie exclaimed.

"I know."

Ben opened the door and turned the sink off.

"You're wasting your time. I'm not gonna help you," Bonnie said from the tub.

Ben smiled devilishly and grabbed Evelyn, Bonnie reached out to try and pull her back but Ben had the girl out of reach.

"That's why she's here," he explained. "Motivation for you to behave. You know, you shouldn't be so desperate. You made it too easy."

Ben pushed Evelyn out of the bathroom roughly, shutting the door on Bonnie, "She wants to talk to you."

"Well, well. Evelyn Gilbert," the girl tutted. "You really are Katherine's doppelgänger. You must have the Salvatore boys reeling."

"Who are you?"

"I'm Anna. Your brother may have mentioned me," she said before adding with girlish sarcasm, "I mean, we're like, practically dating."

Evelyn's jaw clenched, "Bonnie's not gonna open the tomb."

"Oh, I think she will."

"Do you really want Katherine out that bad?"

"Trust me. No one I know wants to see that girl again," she replied. "Except Damon, the lovestruck idiot."

"Well that's surprising, everyone I've met who knew Katherine was obsessed with her," she pointed out. "So, who is it?"

"My mother's in there," Anna said stepping closer, "Katherine couldn't help herself. She just had to toy around with both of the Salvatore brothers. And when she got caught, so did my mother. I watched Jonathan Gilbert take her away."

"Yeah well that's tough luck. I'm sorry that you lost your mom but there are other vampires in there who aren't as, well, let's just say, easily controlled."

"Yeah, I think we'll skip this part so you can start serving a purpose."

"Which is what?"

"Leverage," she replied, holding up the phone. "This belongs to you?"

"I think you got the wrong sister," Evelyn replied. "The Salvatore brothers will do anything to protect Elena, not so much me."

"You really are blind, aren't you?" she inquired before she walked across the room and dialed a number on her phone.

"Wait, what's that supposed to mean?" Evelyn asked but she shushed her.

"She's fine. For now. Tell me you have the grimoire and she'll stay fine," Anna said into the phone, "Which means your brother has it. And I have the witch. So one of you had better meet me in the very public town square in 30 minutes so we can safely discuss how fun it will be to work together."

Anna hung up the phone before knocking on the bathroom door, "I'm leaving."

Ben opened the door to the bathroom and led Bonnie out.

"Keep them buttoned down," she requested. "Compulsion won't work. Just use violence."

"Right. I got that," Ben said before Anna left.

"Sit. Behave," he said to both of them before turning to Bonnie, "So you're the key to this. Literally. The one who opens the door. Tell me, how long have you been a witch?"

"Is there anything to drink here?" Evelyn asked him, cutting his interrogation short.

Ben got up and walked over to me, "Are you offering? There's water on the nightstand."

She walked over and picked up the glass taking a small sip before turning to Bonnie with a raised eyebrow, "Want a sip?"

She nodded understandingly and took the cup.

Bonnie tossed the water on Ben. Bonnie turned the water into flames. Ben yelled and patted the flame down on his arm. Bonnie and Evelyn got up and ran to the door. Bonnie made it to the door and opened it, ready to run out, but Ben grabbed Evelyn before she was able to make it out.

"Come back in!" Ben shouted, "Shut the door!"

"Bonnie, run!" Evelyn tried.

"Don't hurt her," Bonnie said, sliding back into the room.

"Don't make me!" Ben yelled and Bonnie shut the door. "Lock it!"

Bonnie and Evelyn sat back down on the bed and Ben paced in front of us.

"Witches don't have eternal life, right?" he asked. "So you guys can die."

"Yep," Bonnie confirmed, "We can die."

"Ah. That sucks."

With no warning, the door was being kicked down and Ben was screaming because of the sunlight. Evelyn looked up to see Stefan who proceeded to yank open the curtain causing Ben to hide between the beds.

"Get outside!" Stefan shouted at Bonnie and Evelyn and they obeyed.

"When the sun goes down, leave town," Stefan suggested. "If I ever see you again, I will kill you,"

He joined the girls outside and Evelyn eyed him curiously, "You came."

"You sound surprised," Stefan said as the three of them walked to his car.

"I mean, yeah. I'm not Elena," she explained. "So I didn't think you were going to do the whole hero act."

"What, so just because you aren't Elena, I'm supposed to let you die?"

"Well, no, it's just..." she trailed off, "Never mind."

He shot her a look but said nothing as he drove Bonnie home.

"Can you drive me to your place?" Evelyn requested. "I need to talk to Damon."

"Yeah, sure," Stefan said as he switched lanes. "Why did you think I wouldn't come? And don't say because you aren't Elena."

"I don't know. I guess I just thought you had other things to worry about."

"I'll always be there for you, you should know that by now," Stefan said as he pulled up to his house. "He should be inside."

"I'm gonna have to change the locks," Damon said when he saw the girl, picking up the grimoire, "You stage a jailbreak?"

"Stefan," she explained.

"Ah, brother," he mused. "Ever the white knight."

"I convinced Bonnie to help you."

"I doubt that."

"As hard as it is to figure, we're all on the same side, after the same thing."

"Not interested."

"Yes you are, because you were willing to work with them yesterday."

"Fool me once, shame on you."

"You have no reason not to trust me," Evelyn pointed out. "I had nothing to do with that. I'm promising you this now, I will help you get Katherine back."

"I wish I could believe you."

Evelyn unclasped her vervain bracelet before taking it off. She held it up for him to see before placing it on the table, "Ask me if I'm lying now."

"You know Anna won't stop, by the way, no matter what I do."

"Then we'll deal with it."

Damon picked up her bracelet and put it back on her wrist carefully, "I'm trusting you. Don't make me regret it."

-

They arrived in the woods to find over a dozen students drinking and chatting. "The Duke party. I forgot," Evelyn observed. "I hope they stay clear of the church."

"Your hope, not mine," Damon said when Matt and Caroline walked up to them.

"Elena, hey!" Matt said and Evelyn raised an eyebrow at this. He must have had just a little bit too much to drink because he never mixed the pair up before.

"Elena! Oh my God, where have you been?" Caroline asked, intertwining her fingers with Matt's.

"Long story, no time to tell it," Damon said.

"I wasn't talking to you."

"Yeah, we'll it doesn't matter who you were talking to because you got the wrong sister."

"We haven't met," Matt said to Damon, reaching his hand out to shake his, "I'm Matt."

"Matt, there's a reason we haven't met. You and I are going that way," Damon said grabbing Evelyn's arm and pulling her away.

"Are you sure that Damon will come back with her?" Bonnie's Grandma asked as we entered.

"Brother," Damon said, "Witches."

Damon walked past them with the grimoire, Evelyn following right behind him. He descended the stairs and she joined Stefan on the other side of the tomb.

"Everything okay?" he asked.

"Yeah," she nodded. "You didn't tell Elena about any of this, right?"

"No," he answered.

"Good," Evelyn said before turning to Bonnie, "You ready?"

"I guess so."

Sheila lit torches at the tomb and Bonnie joined next to her.

"Air. Earth. Fire," Sheila said.

"Water," Bonnie said, holding up a water bottle which her grandma took and shook on the floor.

"What's that?" Stefan asked, referring to the blood bag Damon pulled out.

"It's for Katherine. Gotta have something to get her going. Unless your girl's offering a vein to tap," he explained, looking back at Evelyn for the last part.

Stefan let out a sigh before Damon turned and whispered to him, "Admit it, you can't wait to get rid of me."

"I can't wait to get rid of you," Stefan agreed with a laugh.

"Hmm."

Bonnie looked up from the ground, "We're ready."

"What are they saying?" Damon asked as Bonnie and Sheila recited the spell.

"Sounds Latin," Stefan said.

"I don't think it's Latin," Evelyn disagreed.

After a few more seconds of the spell, the torches flared up and the tomb creaked open. The two witches stopped chanting and looked up.

"It worked!" Bonnie said.

"Of course it worked," Sheila said.

"We have some fires to build," Damon told Stefan.

Stefan looked at me, "I'm gonna go get the gasoline, I'll be right back."

Evelyn nodded and he left before Damon turned to me. "You ready?"

"Yep," she said, joining him.

"What?" Bonnie asked in confusion.

"You think I'm gonna go in there by myself so you can seal me in?" Damon said to the witches.

"Don't take her in," Sheila said, "I'll bring the walls down."

"You'll bring the walls down if I don't," he countered. "You think I trust you?"

"As much as I trust you."

"Enough. Both of you," Evelyn suggested. "Look, he needs leverage. He needs to know that you're not going to shut the door when he gets inside. I get it. I'll go."

"May I?" Damon requested, grabbing the torch from the spell.

Damon entered the tomb, the girl followed right behind.

"What is that?" Evelyn asked, referring to the whispering.

"They can sense you," he explained before walking ahead, "Now, where is she?"

"Why thank you Damon, I appreciate being left alone with a bunch of starving vampires who's one desire is human blood which I just so happen to be full of!"

The whispering continued and Evelyn started walking before she tripped over something. Using my flashlight to look around, Evelyn saw that she had landed on a mummified vampire. The vampire's eyes were open and bloodshot with hunger. Evelyn scrambled to get off quickly mumbling 'ew' repeatedly.

She finally stood up and looked for an exit before running into someone. "Hello again," Anna greeted. She backed up and bumped into yet another vampire.

Anna saw the vampire and knelt down next her, caressing her arm. "Mother!" She looked up at Evelyn, "Your sister's boyfriend did this, you know."

"His father did," she corrected.

"And Johnathan Gilbert," she added. "I made a choice a long time ago that it would be Gilbert blood that brought her back to life. I had Jeremy all ready to go but..."

"Oh you have got to be kidding me," Evelyn said before she attempted to run even though she knew it was no use.

Anna vamp-sped in front of her. She grabbed her wrist and bit into it causing her to shout in pain. She pushed Evelyn to the ground, across Pearl's lap, and held her wrist up to her mouth. Evelyn struggled, but Pearl, smelling the fresh blood, began to drink it.

"No, please stop!" Evelyn begged.

"I'm gonna get you out," Anna said to her mother.

"Let her go!" Stefan shouted. He grabbed Anna and pushed her aside despite her protest.

He grabbed Evelyn, pulling her up and guiding her to the exit.

"Go. Go," Stefan said, "I'm right behind you."

"Evelyn," Bonnie breathed out once she saw me. "Stefan..."

"He's right behind me," she replied.

The three looked to see that Stefan was standing in the doorway.

"Stefan, what are you doing?" Evelyn asked in confusion.

"It's gonna be okay," Bonnie said. "We'll fix it,."

"What is it?"

"I can't," Stefan stated.

"Can't?" she replied in confusion. "Can't what?"

"The spell's still up," Bonnie explained, "We can't get them out yet."

"You went in there not knowing if you could come back out?" Evelyn gaped. He looked down without answering. "Oh my God, you dumbass. If we don't get you out of there, Elena's going to kill me!"

"I heard you scream," Stefan said.

"We can't leave him in there," Evelyn told him, referring to Damon, "We promised him. Both of us."

"I know."

"Even if we're able to break through the seal, we won't be able to hold it for long," Sheila said.

The two began reciting a spell.

Anna left the tomb with her mother, "I just wanted my mother back. Jeremy's fine. He's outside. I won't touch him."

"Bonnie, keep going!" Sheila shouted before turning to me, "They better hurry."

"Stefan, they can't hold it much longer!" Evelyn shouted into the tomb. "Damn it," she mumbled when she saw how weak they looked. Evelyn ran into the tomb and searched for them.

Damon angrily pushed Stefan away as she ran in.

"Damon! Please," Evelyn begged, "We have to go now." Evelyn could see the despair on his face but followed her out anyway.

As soon as they were out, Evelyn turned around and threw her arms over Stefan's neck, "You have to stop pulling bullshit like that Salvatore."

He rolled his eyes at her with a soft smile before they left and joined Jeremy.

"He's okay," Stefan announced. The two kneeled down next to him to make sure he was really okay. "He's all right."

Damon left the tomb, looking absolutely miserable. Evelyn stood up and walked over to him, wrapping her arms around his torso tightly, "I'm sorry." He hugged her back after a moment. Eventually they let go of each other and she sent him a tight smile.

-

"How's your head?" Evelyn asked Jeremy as she brought water to his room.

"Uh, it's alright," he nodded. "Ijust....I wish I knew how I passed out. I didn't drink that much, I swear."

"And you don't remember anything?"

"The whole thing is pretty cloudy," he explained. "I just...I know how this looks. I'm, I'm sorry."

"No, Jeremy, don't be sorry," Evelyn smiled tightly. "You didn't do anything, okay?"

"Yeah, okay."

"I'm going to head to bed, but is there anything that you need?"

"No, I'm just...I'm gonna crash."

"Okay, well, Jenna's here and I'm right next door," she said before leaving and heading to her room.

"Vicki, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to kill you, I just, I just panicked," Evelyn explained. "You were going to hurt my family and who knows who else."

"So that makes it okay?"

"No, no. Of course not. I ju-"

"Enough with the excuses. It's time for you to pay for your sins Evelyn."

"Please don't," she begged.

"Goodbye Evie," Vicki said before she began walking closer.

"Vicki, you don't have to do this," she pleaded one last time.

"Nobody will miss you," she said smugly before her teeth grew and veins formed under her eyes. "In fact, I'm doing them a favor." With one last look, she bit into the girls neck draining her of her blood.

Evelyn shouted in pain and whimpered as she continued. Her vision began to blur and her breathing became heavy.

Evelyn shot up to see a worried Stefan kneeling beside her bed. Her breathing was heavy as she spoke, "What are you doing here?"

"I came to check on you," he explained, gesturing behind him. "I, uh, heard you from Elena's room."

"Oh," she trailed off as she realized she was sleep-talking again. "You can go back to her, I'm fine.

He looked at her for a moment as though he were contemplating something, "What were you dreaming about?"

"Honestly?" she inquired. "I don't even remember."

"Really?"

She nodded, "Really."

"When you lie, you get this little crinkle-" he said before poking her gently between her eyebrows, "-right there."

She swatted his hand away, "I do not."

"You do."

"Well I'm not lying," she said, covering her eyebrows with her hand.

"So then why are you covering it?" he asked with a raised eyebrow.

"Because I can."

"You don't have to tell me what you were dreaming about but it might help."

She let out a sigh, realizing he was right, "It was about Vicky."

"What was she doing?"

"She was getting revenge on me for killing her and said that nobody would miss me and that she was doing them a favor."

"Was this the first time?"

Evelyn looked down at her hands and played with them, not answering his question.

"Evie?" he said, reaching onto the bed and grabbing her hands to get the girl's attention.

"No," she said quietly, "It's been happening a lot."

"How much is a lot?"

"Like ever since a few weeks after it happened."

"Why didn't you tell anyone?" he inquired. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"I figured it would go away but it hasn't," she said, looking back up at him.

He reached up and wiped away a stray tear that she hadn't even realized was there with his thumb before looking her in the eyes. "If it happens again, I want you to call me, okay?"

She nodded, unable to speak out of fear of crying more.

"Are you going to be okay?" he asked, standing up straight.

"Uh, yeah, yeah, I think so."

"If you need anything, let me know."

"I will," she said and he left, shutting the door behind him.
