13 | the pizza man
Evelyn woke up the following morning more exhausted than when she had gone to bed. She turned over in her bed to see that it was already five in the afternoon and she had slept through the whole day.
Her eyes flickered to a paper that rested on it with a bracelet on top. She reached over and picked up the jewelry, turning it over in her hand before grabbing the note.
Evelyn,
I'm sorry for everything, and I understand you want nothing to do with me. With the new vampire in town we can't be too careful so here is a vervain bracelet. Don't take it off.
Sincerely,
Stefan
"Evelyn," Jeremy's voice sounded, pulling her from her thoughts. "I need money!"
She made her way downstairs and pulled out her wallet. "Hey," she greeted the pizza man with a smile, handing over a twenty. "Keep the change."
"Thanks," he smiled back. "And you have yourself a good night."
"Let's eat," Evelyn suggested, shutting the door and rubbing her hands together as they entered the kitchen.
"How are you hungry?" Jeremy inquired. "You probably just woke up."
"Have you met me?"
The following day, Elena had left to spend the day with Caroline and Bonnie while Jeremy was hanging out with some girl Evelyn couldn't remember the name of. Stefan and Damon were still bickering over the spontaneous road trip leaving Evelyn at home alone.
'Meet me at the grill?' Tyler texted.
'Yeah, sure,' she texted back. 'Be there soon.'
Evelyn grabbed her keys before making her way to the Grill. Anxiety washed over her as she felt as though someone were following her. She brushed it off as paranoia as she pulled into the parking lot.
"Hey," Elena greeted as she entered. "What are you doing here?"
"I'm meeting someone," Evelyn shrugged, ignoring the girl's looks.
"Who?"
"Evie," Tyler spoke up from behind her. "Hey."
"Hey, Ty," Evelyn grinned at the boy before looking back at her twin. "I'll see you at home little sister."
"You're only five minutes older!" she shouted after her.
Elena couldn't help but smile at that as she joined Tyler at the table.
With a smirk on my face, I walked over to another table with Tyler. "I really am sorry for yelling at you the other day," he apologized yet again."
"You can stop saying that you know," Evelyn pointed out. "You got angry, it happens to the best of us. It's okay."
"No, no it's not okay."
"You're right, it's not okay," she agreed. She placed her hand over his, "But it is forgiven. You were upset, I get it. You can stop apologizing now."
"It's ju-"
"It's just nothing," she rolled her eyes. "Now shut up and order us some food, I'm starving."
They spent the next few hours catching up and talking. Eventually though, Tyler's father called and requested that he return home so they had to part ways. They walked with each other toward their cars.
"I'll pick you up for the dance?" Tyler asked.
"Actually, Elena wanted me to ride with her," Evelyn explained. "Something about making sure I'm safe. I can meet you there?"
"Sounds like a plan," Tyler said with a smile before walking to his door.
"Goodbye," she waved, smiling slightly.
He eyed her cautiously, confusing her for a moment before leaning towards her and pressing his lips to her. She kissed him back almost immediately and his hands moved to her face as the kiss deepened.
They pulled away from each other after a moment and Evelyn kept her eyes shut as she let out a breath, coming down from the high.
Her eyes opened a moment later to be greeted by a grinning Tyler and she smiled in return, "I'll see you at the dance then."
He nodded in agreement before they both parted ways. Evelyn was making her way across the parking lot when her phone rang, "Hello?"
"Hello, Evelyn."
Her eyes furrowed in confusion as she inserted her key into her car, "Uh, who's this?"
"Your sister hit me with her car," the man answered causing Evelyn to freeze.
"Is that a new one?"
Evelyn was frozen for a moment, seemingly incapable of forming a sentence or simply getting out of there as soon as possible.
"She managed to get away from me," the man spoke. "I won't make the same mistake with you."
Evelyn looked up to see a man in a hoodie making his way over. She quickly turned the key and unlocked the car. She started the engine before even getting buckled and pulled out of the parking spot, zooming past him.
"Why us?" Elena asked as they all sat in the library at Salvatore Boarding House. "And if he's trying to kill us, then why call first?"
"That's because we're predators, Elena," Stefan explained, now facing her, "We hunt. We stalk. It's often as exciting as the kill." He stuck his hand out to reveal the vampire compass, "I want you to take this."
"This is Jeremy's pocket watch," Elena concluded. "How did you get it?"
"I took it from Damon, who took it from Logan, who took it from Evie."
"What happened to it?"
"Well, it's not just a watch. It's a...it's a sort of compass, but it points to vampires."
"It won't work with me in the house," Evelyn pointed out.
"What?" Stefan and Elena asked in confusion.
"Why do you think Logan thought I was a day walker?" Evelyn pointed out. "As far as I know, I'm not a vampire so I can't explain why. Although, I was able to find Logan when Damon asked me to use it."
"Take it, just in case," Stefan suggested. "If it points anywhere but where she is. You'll know you aren't safe."
The twins made their way to their home to get ready for the dance. Evelyn was waiting downstairs for her sister to be ready when she ran down the stairs frantically, "Is Stefan here?"
"No," Evelyn's eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "Why?" There was a noise from behind her and she turned around to see the pizza man. He reached out and grabbed her before she could react, his fangs extended and ready to attack.
"Elena?" Stefan's voice came from the kitchen. As soon as he entered the room, he tore Noah away from Evelyn, throwing him over the couch.
Elena rushed over to her sister, bombarding her with questions. Before Stefan could do anything to man, he vamp sped out of the house.
"Are you okay?" Stefan asked Evelyn, concern etched in his eyes.
"I'm fine," Evelyn shook her head. "It's not the first time a vampire attacked me and it won't be the last."
Stefan furrowed his eyebrows at this and was ready to say something else but Evelyn brushed him off by heading to the kitchen.
"How did he get in?" Damon asked Elena from the other room.
"He was invited in."
"He posed as a pizza delivery guy last night," Stefan explained.
"Well, he gets points for that," Damon applauded. "Did he say what he wanted?"
"No. He was too busy trying to kill Evie."
"And you have no idea who this is?" Stefan asked.
"No," Damon answered, "Don't look at me like that. I told you we had company."
"You think there's more than one?" Elena asked.
"We don't know," Stefan answered before turning to Damon, who was now sitting on the arm of the couch, "Damon, he was invited in."
"Then we go get him tonight," Damon said before turning to Elena, "You up for it?"
"What do I have to do?" Elena asked.
"You three are so dramatic, did you know that?" Evelyn commented as she entered the room. "You would make a fantastic T.V. show."
The three of them turned to look at her and Elena was the first to speak, "Evie, you could have died."
"But I didn't."
"But you could have."
"Easy Elena," Evelyn mused. "Pessimism doesn't look good on you."
Elena shot her a look as Damon cut the conversation short, answering Elena's previous question.
"Let your boyfriend take you to the dance," Damon suggested. "We'll see who shows up."
"That's a bad idea," Stefan protested.
"Till we get him, this house isn't safe," he countered. "For anyone who lives in it. It's worth a shot."
"Last time I checked-" Evelyn piped up, "-being a sitting duck never got anyone anywhere."
"I'll do it," Elena said, agreeing to the plan.
Stefan seemed unsettled by the plan and Elena grabbed his hand so he would look at her. "We'll be with the two of you. We'll be safe." He nodded reluctantly before glancing over at his brother who merely shrugged.
"I'm going to go find Tyler," Evelyn announced once they arrived.
Elena turned to look at her, "You can't be alone."
"I won't be alone," she pointed out as she walked away, "I'll be with Tyler."
"Are you always brooding or is it like a seasonal thing?" Evelyn mused as she approached Tyler who was leaning against the wall.
He turned to face her with a smile, "Only when you're not around."
"Cheesy."
"Wanna dance?" he asked, reaching his hand out.
She took it with a smile, "Sounds like a plan."
He turned her around as they made their way to the dance floor, "I heard the history teacher tried to cut you a break but you refused."
"Yeah," Evelyn nodded. "I don't do well with pity."
"I've noticed."
"Enough about me, how have you been?" she asked. "With your dad and everything?"
"Nothing out of the ordinary."
"So you're good?" she inquired. "Like happy?"
"I mean, I guess you could say that."
"You're a good guy Ty," Evelyn said with a smile when she made eye contact with Stefan from across the room before quickly looking back at Tyler.
"Are you okay?" he questioned.
"I'm fine, why wouldn't I be?"
Evelyn looked back to where Stefan was standing and saw that he had vanished. She noticed Elena looking around, neither of her vampire bodyguards in sight when her phone rang.
"One sec," she told Tyler before turning away from him and answering the phone.
"Hello, Evelyn," the familiar voice greeted and she tensed, "Here's what you're going to do." She looked around the room frantically, trying to find the source. "There's an exit door behind you. You have five seconds."
"No," she protested, still looking around.
"Is everything okay?" Tyler asked from behind her.
"Or your brother dies," the vampire said. Evelyn looked over at the punch bowl where Jeremy was and she noticed the man on the phone behind him. "I can snap his neck so fast I bet there's not even a witness," he explained. "Now, start walking."
Evelyn quickly turned to Tyler, "I'll be right back." He grew confused and tried to question it but she had already started to walk away, pressing her phone back to her ear, "Don't you dare touch him."
"Keep walking," he suggested. "Through the door."
She continued her way through the gym and once she knew Jeremy was safe, she found the exit. She made her way through the hall and entered the cafeteria. She placed her phone in her pocket as the man approached her.
He walked over and Evelyn remained put, clearly surprising the man when she didn't fight back.
"So you're the nice one?" he questioned as he backed her up into a wall.
"What do you want from us?"
"You look like Katherine."
"Again with that bitch?" Evelyn scoffed. "Who the hell was she that made everyone want her?"
"She was memorizing," he said as he slowly traced his hand from the top of her face to her chin.
She tensed at this, clenching her jaw, "If you're going to kill me, just do it."
"You seem very open to that option."
"What have I got to live for?"
He moved his hand from the tip of her chin to her throat, "Well then it's settled." His vampire teeth slowly grew and veins formed under his eyes when the door slammed open.
"Hey, dickhead," Damon shouted from across the room, stake in hand, "Nobody wants to kill you. We just wanna talk."
The man smiled, releasing his grip on her neck before rushing to Elena who was behind the two brothers. Damon tossed the stake to Stefan who then staked the vampire in the stomach.
He grunted before falling to his knees. The three all stood in front of Noah.
"Now you feel like talking?" Stefan asked.
"Screw you."
Stefan dug the stake in deeper, "Wrong answer. Why are you doing this?"
"Because it's fun."
"What do you want with Elena and Evelyn?"
Evelyn pushed herself off the wall and joined them, "We look like Katherine."
The three all seemed slightly surprised by this.
"You knew Katherine?" Damon questioned.
"Oh," he laughed. "You thought you were the only ones. You don't even remember me."
"Tell me how to get in the tomb," Damon demanded.
"No," he denied, causing Stefan to drive the stake in deeper.
"The grimoire," he choked out.
"Where is it?" Damon asked as Stefan dug it in deeper.
"Check the journal," he replied. "The journal. Jonathan's journal. Jonathan Gilbert's."
"Who else is working with you?" Damon demanded. "Who else is there?"
"No. You're gonna have to kill me."
Damon rolls his eyes and glanced at Stefan. He removed the stake and waited a moment before staking the man in the heart.
Other than the thud of the body and Elena's gasp of surprise, nothing else could be heard until Elena built up the courage to speak.
"What do we..." she trailed off. "How are you gonna find the others now?"
"He had to die," Damon stated.
"But..."
"Elena, he's been invited in," Stefan explained.
"Go," Stefan told Damon when there were footsteps coming their way. "I got this."
Once Damon left, Stefan quickly cleaned up the mess.
"We need to talk," Stefan told Evelyn once he had the blood cleaned up.
She raised an eyebrow, "I think we don't."
"Ev-"
"I have a date who's waiting for me," Evelyn cut him off before leaving the gym and re-joining Tyler on the dance floor.
