12 | on the road again

Evelyn drove as fast as her car would allow her to Elena's location. She arrived to find Damon crouched down next Elena's upside down car. She jumped out quickly and ran over, "What happened?"

"I want you to put your hands on the roof," Damon informed Elena. "Just like that. You ready? 1, 2, 3," he counted ignoring my question. Damon released the seatbelt and helped her out, "I got you. Are you okay? Can you stand? Is anything broken?"

"Uh," Elena moaned, shaking her head and Damon put her down. She swayed slightly and almost fell but he caught her before she hit the ground.

"Whoa, you're fading fast, Elena," Damon grabbed her face. "Elena, look at me. Focus. Look at me. Okay."

"I look like her..." she trailed off.

"What?" Damon inquired as her eyes closed. He picked her up, "Upsy-daisy."

"Oh god," Evelyn mumbled. "She knows."

Damon turned to her in confusion, "Knows what?"

"About Katherine," she explained. "You guys are pretty careless with this stuff, if you haven't noticed. She must have found it when she stayed the night with Stefan."

"Took her long enough," he replied as he placed her in the back of his car where she could lay down.

"What are you doing?"

"We're going on a road trip."

"Excuse me?"

"Get in the car," he suggested. "I assume you won't let me just take an unconscious Elena. So get in, or go home."

"Fine," Evelyn muttered under her breath before getting in the passenger seat.

"She isn't going to be very happy with you," Evelyn pointed out after the thick tension in the car became too much.

"I know, but she also wants nothing to do with Stefan, who keeps calling both of you, by the way."

"When did you take my phone?" she asked when she realized it was no longer in her pocket.

"When you were sleeping."

"Give me my phone."

"Fine, but no rescue calls."

"Deal," she said as he handed her phone over.

From the back seat, the groans of the girl in pain drew them away from the conversation.

"Morning," Damon said smugly, looking at her through the mirror.

"Where are we?" she asked as she sat up and rubbed her head.

"Georgia."

"Georgia?" she gaped. "No, we're not. Seriously, Damon. Where are we?"

"Seriously, we're in Georgia," he replied. "How ya feeling?"

"I...I..."

"There's no broken bones. I checked."

"But my car...there was a man...I hit a man. But then he got up, and...who was that?'

"That's what I would like to know."

"Where is my phone?" she asked. "Okay. We really need to go back. Nobody knows where I am. Pull over. I mean it, Damon. Pull over! Stop the car!"

"Oh you were so much more fun when you were asleep," Damon said as he pulled over and Elena hopped out of the car almost falling in the process.

He immediately rushed over and was at her side, "Hey."

"I'm fine," she shook her head. "We have to go back."

"Oh come on. Look. We've already come this far..."

"Why are you doing this?" she asked. "I can't be in Georgia. I wrecked my car. I have to go home. This is kidnapping."

"Stop being so dramatic, Elena," Evelyn requested as she got out of the car and joined them, "If you go back, you have to talk to Stefan."

"You're not funny," she replied. "You can't do this. I'm not going to Georgia."

"Well, you're in Georgia," he pointed out. "Without your magical little necklace, I might add. I can very easily make you...agreeable."

"What are you trying to prove?"

A phone rang from Damon's jacket and Elena immediately pinned it as her own, "That's my phone."

"Mmm. It's your boyfriend. I'll take it," Damon said before answering, "Elena's phone...!"

"Elena? She's right here. And, yes, she's fine. He wants to talk to you," Damon said looking at Elena but she shook her head, "Yeah. I don't...I don't really think she wants to talk to you right now. You have a good day. Mm-hmm. Bye-now."

"Look, no one knows where I am. Can we please just go back?" Elena begged.

"We're almost there."

"Where is there?"

"A little place right outside of Atlanta. Oh, come on, Elena. You don't wanna go back right now. Do you? What's the rush? Time-out. Trust me. Your problems are still going to be there when you get home. Look. Step away from your life for five minutes. Five minutes!"

"Am I gonna be safe with you?"

"Yes."

"You promise not to do that mind control thing with me?"

"Yes."

"Can I trust you?"

"Get in the car. Come on."

"So, where's my car?" Elena said, now in the front seat while Evelyn sat in the back.

"I pulled it off to the side of the road. I don't think anyone will bother it."

"What about that man in the road? Was he a...?"

"From what I could tell, yeah..."

"You didn't know him?"

"If I've never met him, I wouldn't know him. I mean, it's not like we all hang out together at the Vamp Bar & Grill."

"How do I know this isn't just another trick of yours?"

"What?"

"That he isn't your friend that you sent to scare me."

"You're kidding, right?" Damon asked, looking at her.

"Eyes on the road buddy, I'm not trying to die today," Evelyn said, causing the two up front to roll their eyes. "You know, I'm getting tired of third wheeling."

"You aren't third wheeling," Elena responded.

"Yeah, right."

"Where are we? You brought us to a bar? Damon, We're not old enough. They're not going to let us in," Elena said as Damon pulled into a parking lot.

"Sure they will."

"No. No, it can't be. Damon. My honey pie," a lady from behind the bar said approaching the three of us.

She grabbed Damon and planted a long semi-passionate kiss on his lips.

"Oh?" Evelyn inquired, shooting a look at her sister who had her eyebrow raised and was staring at the two who were still kissing.

"Listen up everybody! Here's to the man that broke my heart, crushed my soul, destroyed my life, and ruined any and all chances of happiness!" the lady shouted as she made her way behind the bar to pour everyone a shot, "Drink up!"

"So, how'd he rope you in?" she asked Elena as she poured her a shot.

"I'm not roped in. Actually, I'm dating his..." Elena began to protest but was cut off.

"Honey, if you're not roped, you're whipped. Either way, just enjoy the ride," she said, pouring more alcohol and turning to me, "What about you?"

"Just another one of those mistakes you can't shake off."

"Okay," Elena interrupted uncomfortably. "So, how did you two meet?"

"College."

"You went to college?" Elena said, slightly shocked as she turned to Damon.

"I've been on a college campus, yes."

"About twenty years ago, when I was a sweet, young freshman, I met this beautiful man, and I fell in love. And then he told me about his little secret, made me love him more. Because, you see, I had a little secret of my own that I was dying to share with somebody."

"She's a witch," Damon said in a hushed whisper.

"Changed my world, you know."

"I rocked your world," he corrected with a smirk.

"He is good in the sack, isn't he?" she mused, looking at Evelyn. "But mostly he's just a Walkaway Joe. So, what is it that you want?"

Elena had made her way outside to make a call, although Damon didn't know that. Evelyn went to the restroom. On her way back, she overheard Bree on the phone.

"Hey, it's Bree," she began holding the button on the blender, "You'll never gonna guess who walked into my bar."

Evelyn sat down where Damon and Elena had previously sat, causing Bree to hang up.

"Where did they go?" Evelyn asked.

"They're coming back in now," she answered as she gestured to the door.

"Let's just say that I'm descended from Katherine..." Elena began after she ate a fry, "Does that make me part vampire?"

"Vampires can't procreate. But we love to try," Damon said with a smirk. "No, if you were related, it would mean Katherine had a child before she was turned."

"Did Stefan think that he could use me to replace her?"

"Kinda creepy if you ask me," Damon said and grabbed the pickles off her plate, "Come on, what? You don't like pickles? What's wrong with you?"

"How can you even eat? If technically you're supposed to be..."

Evelyn zoned out of the conversation as she stared at Bree. Who was she on the phone with? She snapped back to reality when her phone rang for the millionth time. She went to hang up when she noticed it was Tyler, not Stefan.

"Hey," she greeted.

"I just wanted to apologize, you know, for yelling," he explained. "I was going to apologize in person but you weren't at school today."

"Yeah, I needed a day off."

There was muttering in the background and what sounded like arguing when finally someone finally came back on the phone.

"Evelyn, where are you?" Stefan's voice came through the phone.

"Goodbye, Stefan."

"No, wait," he tried. "Don't hang up."

"Can't you take a hint?" she inquired. "I don't want to talk to you, neither does Elena."

"Is she okay?"

Evelyn glanced over to see Elena playing pool and laughing with a stranger. "She's fine," Evelyn answered. "Just give her time." And then she hung up.

She crossed the room to Elena just as her phone began to ring. She picked it up and answered once she saw that it was Jenna not Stefan.

"Hello?"

"Elena?"

"Jenna?" Evelyn inquired. "Hold on, it's loud in here."

"Elena, where are you guys? Are you okay?"

"Huh?" she replied. "Yeah. No, We're good. Everything's fine." She moved to the outside, "Hold on, I can't hear you."

"No, it's not fine! I got a call..." Jenna trailed off as she exited the bar.

"I expect this behavior from Evie," she stated. "But not from you, you need to get home."

"You expect this behavior from her?" Evelyn asked, feeling slightly hurt by the comment.

"Just get home."

"We wi-"

Someone's hand covered her mouth causing me to drop Elena's phone and she struggled until she gave up.

Evelyn eventually regained composure and saw Damon making his way over with Elena.

"Damon, no!" Evelyn shouted from the tank where she stood. The mystery man from before attacked him with a wooden plank, it was a trap.

"What the hell?" Damon shouted as the man continued to hit him.

"No!" Elena shouted as he poured gasoline all over Damon.

"Who are you?" Damon asked when he was distracted by the arrival of Elena.

"That's perfect!" he scoffed, facing Damon. "You have no idea."

"What are you talking about?" Elena inquired. "What did he do?"

"He killed my girlfriend," he pointed out. "What did she do to you, huh? What did she do to you?!"

"Nothing," Damon replied weakly.

"I don't understand," Elena said, shaking her head.

"My girlfriend went to visit Stefan, and Damon killed her," he explained. "Got it?"

"Lexi? Lexi was your girlfriend?" she asked. "She told me about you. She said that you were human."

"I was."

"Lexi turned you?"

"If you want to be with someone forever, you have to live forever."

"She loved you. She said that, 'when it's real, you can't walk away.'"

"Well, that's a choice you're not going to have to make."

"Don't," Evelyn pleaded from above. "Don't, please, don't hurt him..."

He then lit a match and held it threateningly over Damon, "I'm doing you a favor."

"Lexi loved you! And she was good! And that means you're good to," Elena pointed out. "Be better than him. Don't do this. I'm begging you! Please."

He then picked Damon up and threw him against the wall.

"Thank you," Elena said, letting out a sigh of relief as Evelyn hopped down from where she was and rushed over to Damon.

"It wasn't for you," he said before leaving.

"Damon?" Evelyn asked, "Are you gonna be okay?"

"Yeah..." he muttered, sitting up, "I just need a minute."

"Here," she said, rolling up her sleeve, "Drink."

"What?" he said furrowing his eyebrows.

"Just drink, you need your strength so that we can get our butts on the road and Aunt Jenna doesn't kill us."

With a raised eyebrow he pulled her wrist closer and bit into it slowly. Holding back any noises her throat threatened to make at the pain, she watched as the color creeped its way back to his face. He released her wrist a moment later and managed to stand up.

"Let's get you two home."

"So, why did you bring me with you?" Elena asked from the passenger seat.

"Well, you're not the worst company in the world, Elena," he replied with his usual smirk. "You should give yourself more credit."

"Seriously?"

"You were there in the road, all damsel-in-distress-like. And, I knew it would piss off Stefan. And...you're not the worst company in the world, Elena."

"I used to be more fun."

"You did okay."

"I saved your life!"

"I know."

"And don't you forget it!" she said with a grin.

Entering the house, Jenna began the scolding.

"Why are you telling me this?" Evelyn began, "I thought you expected this behavior from me?"

Jenna turned to Elena, "You told her I said that."

Elena furrowed her eyebrows in confusion, "No I-"

"That was me on the phone, Aunt Jenna. I appreciate the honesty though," she explained before making her way upstairs, ignoring the calls after her.

Evelyn hopped in the shower, needing a minute to calm down. She had hoped that the rough days would come to a stop but it just felt like one after another after another.

After she had felt more relaxed than before, she hopped out of the shower and wrapped a towel tightly around herself. She made her way to her dresser and searched for clothes.

"So you vervain me and then ignore all of my calls?" Stefan up, announcing his presence and surprising the girl a little.

"What are you doing here?" she demanded, pulling the towel tighter around herself.

"We need to talk."

"No, we don't," she countered. "Get out of my room."

"There is something you need to know."

"Get out of here," she requested. "Before I make you."

"Just, relax, okay?" he tried and she shook her head.

"Don't tell me to relax, get the hell out of my room!"

"Evie..." he tried again.

"Get out!"

"Why are you so mad at me?" he finally shouted back.

The room fell silent for a moment. Evelyn glanced at the floor before speaking in a hushed tone, "You didn't say goodbye."

"What?"

"Elena told me about your plan on leaving town, to keep her safe," she explained. "You didn't say goodbye. Not in a text, not in a letter, not at all."

"I was going to but I-"

"I don't want to hear it, Stefan," she huffed. "Just go already."

"Look, after this, you don't have to talk to me ever again but you need to know something."

"What is it?"

He glanced to the side for a moment before looking back at her, "You're adopted."
