]3[
As Joshua slept in the cold claustrophobic cell, dreams flooded through his head; dreams of freedom and independence. He saw himself walking out of the gates of the Fangelisi ship, and run into the valleys of Husavik. Joshua didn't care where he would go. He just wanted to be free, and his mission to Husavik was his only hope.
As morning broke upon the Fangelisi ship, Joshua awoke to the freezing cold of the cell, and Eloise's rants, which he would call, "vellingar."
Joshua couldn't make out what Eloise was saying, but his tone was fierce and angry.
"Ekki er hægt ao treysta óvininum, ég sver ao ég mun finna hann."
Joshua rubbed his eyes and looked up to the top bunk.
"El, what's the matter?"
Eloise released himself from the grasp of his bunk and looked down upon his friend.
"I am svekktur, Joshua." He said. "I am to spy for the Fangelisi Yfirmenn and the possible enemy could be anywhere."
"You seem to know what you're looking for, right?"
Eloise grunted.
"That Marshall Kemp Gæi looks like trouble. Did you see his face? It looks smushed, like he had himself caved in at another Fangelisi."
Joshua chuckled.
"El, did you have some bad dream?"
"Did you have a bad dream yourself?" Eloise asked.
"Why ask?" Joshua said.
"I heard you talk in your sleep. An officer came in and asked, and I told him you were talking to me. This is the kind of shit that Kemp warned us about. One wrong move could get us gassed!"
Joshua was aware that Eloise was warning him. As a spy, his life and the lives of the inmates were on the line, as well as the mission.
However, before the conversation could continue, shouts rang out from outside the cell.
"Fangar!" An officer cried. "Úti fyrir nafnakall!"
"Roll call." Eloise said; getting down from the bunk.
Joshua stayed still; mortified by the aggressiveness of the officer.
Eloise saw him standing still and pulled his friend down.
"Komdu, Joshua." He said.
The two stepped outside of their cell; side by side with the other inmates.
Two officers came down. One held a clipboard with the inmates names and their cell mates, and the other was in charge of making sure the inmates stayed in formation.
Joshua and Eloise stood in attention and dared not speak. If they did, they would be beaten. It was the same roll call they endured back in the Reykjavik prison.
The officers went down the line and marked off each inmate.
After a few minutes, Joshua and Eloise were called.
"Vídalín, Eloise!"
"Já, herra." He replied.
Then, it was Joshua's turn.
"Dun, Joshua!"
Joshua didn't reply. Eloise looked to him; giving him the concerning eye.
The officer called again.
"Dun, Joshua!"
The boy looked down.
"Yes, sir."
The officer slapped Joshua with his clipboard.
"Talaou pegar kallao er, fangi!"
Joshua hadn't taken the time to learn the Icelandic language since the three months of training. It was embarrassing and humiliating to be slapped on the first day of roll call.
However, he remembered what Eloise said, and spoke it to the officers.
"Já, herra."
Then, the roll call was over.

After returning to their cells, Eloise pulled Joshua inside and slapped him across the face.
"What the fuck were you doing?!"
"I-I'm sorry, I was not sure what to say-"
"You could've gotten us in trouble, or worse!"
"I didn't know-"
"Did you not remember the roll calls back in Reykjavik? We respond and never ignore commands! You should fucking know this!"
Joshua didn't fight back. He knew he was wrong.
"I was nervous, El, and I'm sorry."
Eloise was still livid.
"You murdered a man, with remorse, now you pay back by serving the Fangelisi. I don't want to see you gassed, even for disobeying a simple command!"
"I know."
Eloise calmed down.
"Do better."
Joshua, without hesitation, agreed.
"I will."
Later on, Eloise was called to complete his first task of the day as spy and translator. Joshua was now alone in the cold and claustrophobic cell that they shared.
He contemplated to himself on why he disobeyed rollcall. He remembered the roll calls that he went through back in the Reykjavik prison, and he never disobeyed an officer's command.
He felt stupid for not responding, even if he didn't understand the Icelandic language.
During the first 10 years of a sentence, Joshua attended basic Icelandic language class, but now that he was in a different prison, on a Fangelisi ship with a mission that had to be completed, the anticipation took all of his knowledge away.
Joshua closed his eyes and could see himself being sentenced to death for the mistake he made, then he saw himself enter the gas chamber, where the cyanide gas would come down and dissolve his lungs, taking away his life.
With the amount of time that they had to complete the mission, Joshua had to regain what he learned in order to succeed and gain his freedom.
