Fancy A Game Of Cards?
Mick, Jean and Keith got down to a little game of cards.
Jean had suggested that they just get back since people kept recognizing Mick and that would set them at a running pace for a while. Soon they were winded with cramps running up and down their sides.
"Ok, bets in" Keith said as he placed a crisp bill on the floor, Jean started to follow suit, but Mick pressed a bill in her hand and then placed his own on the floor.
Keith dealt and they played a quick round.
Mick won.
"Erm, how is fame?"
"Fame?"
"Fame."
"Well, it's different. . . I never expected to get here and I can't imagine that we'll stay here very long"
"Yes, but it seems that with Satisfaction hitting the charts, you can't get much higher. What will follow?" Kevin asked in Brian's direction, Shirley watched.
Brian played it cool, he didn't want to confess that he really had no idea what song would come next. Because he didn't write.
"That's really up to Mick and Keith, actually"
He shifted uncomfortably and Shirley glanced at him, he looked at the floor.
"We won't keep you much longer Bri, but, one last question; there a girl in your life?"
He looked up quickly, heat spreading to his cheeks. He didn't dare look at anyone or anything but the microphone in front of him.
"I don't know, you see" he said quietly into the mike.
Kevin looked at him and noticed he'd come a bit down, he looked a bit deflated, actually.
There was a pause and some static blew over the mikes. Kevin snapped out of his daze and cleared his throat.
"We won't keep you any longer then Brian, that was Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones today! Thank you Brian, I hope you find some satisfaction one day!" He winked at Brian and put on The Beatles.
Shirley gently set her headphones on the small table and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
Brian shuffled over and looked at her sitting down, "wanna go now?" He asked politely while offering her his hand.
His pluck had already returned, it seemed.
Kevin waved at Shirley from inside the booth and she stood up, excepting Brian's hand and heading toward the back door.
"What should we do now?"
"Dunno"
Mick had won all the rounds they'd played so far, and Keith was getting a bit jealous of the small pile of money Mick had gathered beside him.
"We could go try and find Shirl and Brian" Jean spoke from her spot at the table, she was currently enjoying a sandwich.
Keith considered this as he re-shuffled the deck of cards for the millionth time.
Mick looked out the window and noticed what a beautiful day it was.
Shirley and Brian snuck along the back of an alleyway. No one had been outside when they walked through the back door. "We should go back I guess" Shirley mumbled shyly as she stuck her hands in her pockets. Brian kicked a pebble and looked ahead, "we probably should, right?"
She nodded and they started walking on in silence.
I can't believe you don't have a girlfriend, Shirley thought to herself, you're so nice and handsome!
"Thanks" Brian smiled over at her, Shirley gasped and realized with a shock that she was thinking aloud.
Her face turned bright red.
"It's true!" she squeaked.
He chuckled and casually put an arm around her shoulder. Her insides froze up. Shirley just continue to walk.
Brian didn't know what he was doing, he really had no idea. One minute, his arm was by his side and then boom, hand on her shoulder.
Should I take my hand back? He asked himself in his head; oh god, this is embarrassing, what if she. . Arg!
He'd said that aloud, but Shirley didn't say anything, she just smiled quietly to herself.
When the two returned to her apartment, Brian was practically dragged back out the door. He struggled until Mick and Keith finally let go.
"What the hell is going on?!" He asked angrily, looking at first Mick, then Keith.
Shirley and Jean watched from the doorway with wide eyes.
"The time!" Keith almost shouted, "we have a concert to do!"
"It's four o'clock!" Mick added while edging toward the door.
Jean felt sad, she thought Mick liked her! He was being nice, but was that just a game to him? She had real feelings for him now that she'd actually met him, but now he was leaving! And she didn't think posters and records would suffice anymore.
Brian cast a longing glance at the doorway in which Shirley and Jean stood. Jean looked a bit red in the face but Shirley just looked sad. She was staring off into space. It seemed to Brian, that Shirley actually like him. For who he was, not just for his fame or the way he could play guitar. And, he realized with horrifying clearness, he liked her back. Was it possible to fall in love in such a short time? Apparently it was, and it was being pulled apart right then and there. For Brian was suddenly shoved down the stairs by Mick and Keith and out the door they went. Running off down the street on unsteady feet, leaving Shirley and Jean in the doorway.
