"For my New Year's resolution, I want to ask Sakura out on a date!"

"Yeah, uh..." Sakura rolled her eyes, "I can assure you, that's not going to happen..."

"Aw, come on, Sakura." Kakashi grinned, "you don't know that. Besides, you know whenever Naruto makes promises himself something like that, he never goes back on his word..."

Naruto stood up and slapped his chest, "cuz that's my ninja way, you know?"

"Sit down, idiot." Sasuke shut his eyes, "that doesn't always happen."

"Yeah, yeah." Naruto stuck his tongue out at him, "so what's your New Year's resolution, Sasuke?"

"That's none of your business."

Sakura leaned forward to look at him, "aw, come on, Sasuke. Share it with us."

He glanced at her coldly then looked away.

"Can we assume clan restoration?" Naruto chuckled.

"You kids are still Genin." Kakashi groaned, "there's no point in thinking about that just yet. At least not until you're older. 18 at the least. People marry young that age."

"If Sasuke's so determined, I'm sure 18's the age." Naruto nodded in agreement, "whatever. Nothing you have to tell us, Sasuke. We can read you like a book."

Sakura watched the brooding boy for a little while. If anything, what Naruto said is completely false. Rarely anyone could read that cold expression.

Kakashi chuckled sheepishly to break the tension that arose among the young Genin, "alrighty, let's just do this." He pulled out four pieces of paper, "let's make this a tradition from now on. Before the new year begins, we should all write down what we want for this upcoming year. Then we'll bury them here in the training fields and come back thirty years later and reminisce. See if the year's been fulfilled."

"Yeah!" Naruto grabbed a paper, "I like that!"

"Sure." Sakura took one, "right, Sasuke?"

"Hn. Maybe."

The four wrote down their New Year's resolutions and folded them up.

"Don't read it, Kakashi-Sensei!" Naruto shouted as they handed the Jonin their papers, "secret!"

"Yes, yes, I understand."

Sakura watched as Sasuke hesitantly handed Kakashi his note, then shifted on the blanket that the four of them sat on and they watched as the fireworks went off in the sky.

Maybe... Just maybe... Sakura smiled.

- 3 Years Later -

"You still do that?"

"Of course!" Naruto glanced over his shoulder at Sakura, "you should do it, too!"

"Well..." Sakura crossed her arms, "there's no point. Mine didn't actually happen. In fact... The opposite happened."

Sai took the piece of paper from Naruto, "what is this? Hm? 'I want to ask Sakura out on--'"

"Hey!" Naruto snatched the paper back, "don't read it out loud!"

"What is this?"

"Well, Sai, if you must know..." Sakura scratched her neck, "it's this thing we started back when we were Genin. We write down our New Year's resolutions on these pieces of paper and we bury them at the training grounds. Only I stopped doing it a couple of years ago."

"Ha." Naruto grinned, "I never lose hope, so I write down the same thing every year."

"And I assure you..." Sakura sighed, "it's still not going to happen."

"Hm. I will write something, too." Sai sat down on the grass next to Naruto and pulled out his own piece of paper.

Sakura tilted her head and watched as the two boys wrote their resolutions. Sai leaned over to look at what Naruto was writing, which led to some yelling and shoving. She chuckled to herself and looked up at the sky, "maybe..." She sat down next to the two boys and pulled out her own piece of paper, "I guess there's no harm in writing one too."

"Heehee." Naruto leaned over to look at her sheet, "so, is it about Sasuke again?"

"You idiot!" Sakura shoved both him and Sai away, "it's nothing about him! I want to do better with my Medical Ninjutsu! You know, I'm getting there!"

The three had their fit of laughter as they gathered their folded pieces of paper and found the same pit that held the box of their past resolutions.

"So." Sai sifted through the box, "these are from the past years?"

"Yep! As of three years ago." Naruto grinned, "we should open one!"

"No!" Sakura shouted suddenly, "I mean... We should wait a little while longer..."

"Uh... Okay." Naruto chuckled sheepishly as he shut the box and pushed the dirt back over it, "let's keep this up every year!"

Sakura shut her eyes then nodded, "sure."

- 10 Years Later -

"Sakura."

Sakura stopped and turned around, "hm?"

"Before we head back to your place, there's someplace I want to stop by first and get."

"Oh, uh..." She tilted her head, "do you want me to go with you?"

"No, no. It's alright. You head back to your apartment. I'll catch up later."

"O-okay..." She nodded and went on ahead.

Weird... Sakura sighed to herself as she continued on to her apartment. About ten minutes after she got there, the door she left unlocked opened.

"So, Sasuke." She smiled at her visitor, "what is it you wanted to get?"

"Uh..." He looked away almost embarrassedly, "I'll tell you later tonight when we go out to the Training Fields."

"Oh, that's right." Sakura nodded as started folding her laundry, "they have the fireworks tonight, don't they? It's the New Year, after all."

"Yeah." Sasuke took his cloak off and set it on the armrest of the couch, "we'd better get ready to go, it's already getting pretty late."

"Mhm!" Sakura smiled, "I'm going to go get dressed!"

"Yeah." Sasuke watched her walk off before he pulled out the box he hid behind his back. He opened it and looked through it, smiling to himself. He set the lid back and hid the box again as Sakura came out, "well, ready to go?"

"Let's go."

"Hey!" Naruto and Hinata waved from the blanket they'd set up at the Training Fields, "you guys are so slow!"

"Shut up..."

Sakura spread out the blanket she held next to Naruto and Hinata's and they sat next to them.

"So, Sasuke." Naruto grinned, "bring it out."

"Hn." He smirked as he pulled out the box.

"Ah! That's..." Sakura took the box, "why'd you take this?"

"Because..." Sasuke reached into his pocket and pulled out a handful of folded papers.

"Wow!" Naruto grinned.

"That's..." Hinata chuckled, "that's a lot..."

Sakura pointed at the pile, "You mean..."

"These are all my New Year's resolutions. I've kept the tradition going after all this time, even after that first year in our Genin days." He smiled, "I want you to read them."

She pointed at herself, "m-me?"

"Well.' He chuckled, "I'm not sure how far you'll have to go, but... Start with the one in the box."

She looked at him suspiciously as she unfolded the paper and read the words.

- I will get closer to restoring my clan and destroying Itachi Uchiha.

Figured... Sakura cleared her throat and took the second one.

- I will get stronger.

Why is this all sounding so familiar...? She pushed the thoughts to the back of her head and continued. Every resolution involved something related only to strength or getting better. However, his resolution from when he was 17 caught her eye.

- I will find what I'm really looking for...

She looked at him, "what's this supposed to mean?"

"Just keep reading."

- I will make things up to Sakura.

Sakura looked up at him.

- I will ask Sakura to come with me on my journey.

"S-Sasuke, these are..."

"Yeah." Sasuke nodded sheepishly, "pretty cheesy, I know. But..." He pulled out another paper, "here's the last one."

Sakura took it and opened it. She covered her mouth when she read the words.

- I will ask Sakura to marry me.

"Is this..." Sakura looked at him, but when she did, he was holding a small ring out to her, "what?!"

"There. I want to fulfill this New Year's resolution, so I need your help. I want to spend my new year completely and entirely with you. So... Will you marry me?"

Sakura nodded repeatedly, "yes, yes, yes!"

Once he slid the ring on her finger, she threw her arms around him and kissed him.

"Heh..." Naruto grinned, "the idiot finally did it."

Hinata giggled, "Happy New Year, everyone."
