Ch2: The Invitation
As soon as I exit my bedroom, the smell of toast fills my nostrils as it wafts up from the kitchen. I head downstairs, hearing the familiar creak from the very last step. I walk into the kitchen to see only Dad, standing by the counter, plating several pieces of crispy, golden toast.
I tap my knuckles on the doorframe to catch his attention. He turns around and smiles at me.
"Morning, Sare," he says, picking up one of the plates. He sits it on the breakfast bar, ready for me to grab. "Have a nice sleep?"
"Mm," I mutter, not wanting to tell him about the dream. He'll only worry, and Dad already has enough to worry about. He raises an eyebrow, but quickly shakes it off.
I grab the plate and slowly much on the toast, skimming over the Muggle newspaper as I eat. Bonnie comes into the kitchen minutes later, her hair a complete mess - she never bothers with her hair.
Within a few moments, conversation starts up. As Dad and Bonnie chat about Merlin-knows-what, I head into the living room to watch the news. The muggles at school always used to complain about the news, but it's actually quite fascinating - talking about the latest car model and fancy kitchen appliance adverts.
Suddenly, without any warning whatsoever, the sound of glass shattering echoes through from the kitchen. I quickly jump up from the sofa and race into the kitchen to see what happened. As soon as I step through the doorway, I notice the window above the sink is smashed. Lying in the glass shards is a large eagle owl. I look over to Dad and Bonnie who are staring gobsmacked at the broken window, before gently picking the the owl, brushing off excess shards stuck in its feathers.
Holding it carefully, I carry it to the dining table an lay it down. I think it's knocked out. Bonnie quickly gets up and leans over the owl. She unites the letter from its leg and looks at the addressee.
"It's for you, Sarah," she says handing it to me.
I take the letter before turning back to the window. We'll have to repair that soon. Well, I'll have to repair that soon, as technically I'm the reason it broke. The owl was for me.
Dad gets up and walks over to the window. Bonnie continues leaning over the owl to inspect it as I sit down. Dad watches me in the corner of his eye as I tear open the letter and smooth it out.
Dear Sarah,
My Dad got tickets to the Quidditch World Cup on Monday night! Better yet, you can come too! He bought an extra ticket and told me I could bring a friend. My first instinct was to ask Blaise or Theo, but they've already got tickets. I asked Dad if I could ask you, and he said yes! At first I thought he would brush you aside, because he knows who you are and all. I was rather shocked when he said you could come (I think he's a bit side-tracked with work). So, if your Dad says you can come, I'll pick you up. It's on the Monday - as you probably know, so I'd get you on the Sunday.
What do you say?
Send me your answer by owl, we don't have one of those Muggle communication device things.
xDraco
I stare at the letter. Draco just asked me to the World Cup!
"Who's the letter from, sweetie?" Dad asks from over at the broken window.
"Um..." I say. I haven't exactly told Dad that I'm friends with Draco yet. He might have noticed last year, but I'm not sure. I don't think he would approve of me being friends with a Malfoy - I don't think he and Mr Malfoy are friendly to each other. "A friend. They've asked me to the Quidditch World Cup."
"Who's your friend?"
Oh no - a trap. Well, at least the worst he will do is not let me go and tell me to discontinue our friendship - which I will not accept. I'm going to be friends with Draco no matter what.
"Draco Malfoy," I say bluntly, not making eye contact.
I hear a small clink on the ground from where Dad is standing. I look up to see him frozen in his spot. "Draco Malfoy?" he says.
"Yes," I say quietly. Without another word, Dad walks around from behind the breakfast bar and stands beside me. I prepare myself for a lecture on being friends with a Malfoy, but that doesn't come. He just picks up the letter and reads through it, furrowing his eyebrows.
I bite my lip and he reads through it a second time, hoping he might let me go.
"So you will be staying with his family at the Cup?" he says, flipping over the letter in his hands.
"Yes. We'd be in a tent, I'm guessing," I say.
"Together?" Dad asks.
That's a good question. Would we be in the same tent? Surely not, if the tent has multiple rooms inside.
"I'm not sure," I say. "He didn't tell me."
"Well, I'll let you go," he says with a small smile. "I will, however, get you to take our tent with you just in case."
"We have a tent?" I say. Since when do we own a tent - we've never been camping before.
"It's in the attic," Bonnie says from behind Dad. She looks up at us and shrugs. "It was in one of the boxes when we moved in."
"Your mother and I used to camp a lot before you girls we born," Dad tells us. "It got to hard for the four of us to go, so we packed the tent away."
"Right," I say. I pick up the letter which Dad drops onto the table. "Well, I'm going upstairs to send Draco my reply."
I jump up from my seat and go to leave the room, but Dad stops me.
"Sarah, we'll have to do something about this window," he says. "You're going to help me."
I turn around and stare at him. "Can't we just use magic?" I ask him.
"We don't need to use magic for everything, Sarah," Dad says. "We're going out to buy and new window and your going to help me replace it, okay?"
I groan, but tell him I would help. I hurry upstairs to my bedroom, go straight over to my writing desk and get out some parchment and a quill.
Dear Draco,
I can go to the Cup! Dad let me come, even after finding out that you were the one that asked me (he didn't know about our friendship, and I don't think he and your Dad are good friends). Also, your huge owl broke our kitchen window! Now we have to repair it, without magic!
I am so excited to come to the Cup with you! It's going to be amazing! I wish Bonnie could join us, but she's not that into Quidditch. It's lucky your Dad let me come - but who's complaining? Not me of course! You do know my address right? Just to make sure, it's just 6 Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey. Also, my Dad wants to know if we'd be sharing a tent (he's not too keen on us sharing a tent alone).
Can't wait to see you on Sunday!
xSarah
Feeling a bit brave, I added a kiss on the end of my letter. He left one on the end of his, so it doesn't matter, right? We're just friends.
I quickly seal the letter and lean over my desk to the cage containing my owl, Swoops. Just as I'm a both to open the cage, I remember Draco's owl. I should probably send the letter back with his owl, rather than Swoops.
Taking the letter with me, I go back downstairs to see Dad back at the window and Bonnie petting the now-conscious owl.
"I see the owl's fine," I say walking in. Bonnie looks up from the owl and nods.
"I'm guessing that's your reply," she says, gesturing toward the letter. I notice a glint of jealousy in her eyes. Does she want to go to the Cup as well?
"Uh, yeah," I say, going over to the owl to tie the letter to its leg. As soon as the letter is attached, the owl flies off through the broken window.
"Wish I could go..." I hear Bonnie mutter and she walks around to Dad, who is now sweeping up the glass shards.
I sigh, biting my lip. Of course she wants to go, how could I have been stupid to not think she would be interested? It's the Quidditch World Cup for Merlin's sake! I want to buy her a ticket, but they'd be sold out. Nor do I even know where Draco and I are sitting at the match!
I quickly leave the room, not wanting to be there any longer and go back up to my room. As soon as I enter, I see Hedwig - Harry's owl - sitting on my desk, nipping at Swoops' cage. Smiling, I unattached the letter and small package tied to Hedwig's leg and open Swoops' cage. He zooms out of the cage and flies around the room, Hedwig chasing after him. I laugh, opening the letter in my hands.
Sarah,
Thanks for the cake you sent me, it's delicious! I've eaten all of it since I received it. Dudley is still on his diet, and Petunia wants us all to follow along as well! It's funny seeing Dudley's confused face when I happily eat the rabbit food we're given. Lucky he doesn't know about my secret cake stash! It'd be a shame if he did find it.
I'm sorry we couldn't hang out this summer. Vernon and Petunia won't let me out of the house, unless it was to take me to Mrs Figg's when they go out somewhere. Hopefully next summer.
Love from your brother,
Harry
ps: I've attached a slice of cake for you as a "thank you for giving me food".
Smiling, I pick up the package and open it to find a large helping of cake. As soon as the paper is off, a pang of citrus hits my nostrils. Citrus cake, my favourite! I sit the slice of cake back down on my desk and I throw the open letter beside it, and walk over to my window. I stick my head out and look over to where I know Harry's bedroom is, to see the window open and the curtains billowing in the wind.
I pull my head back inside, and grabbing one more sheet of parchment I quickly scribble a thank you note. I manage to call Hedwig down so I can attach the letter to her leg.
"You don't have to go far again, Hedwig," I smile as I let her out the window and she soars back to Harry's window.
I turn back to Swoops, who has now flown back into his cage. "You better come back out," I say to him. "I've got a letter."
Swoops hoots in delight as he flies back out of his cage and lands on the desk. I pick up Sirius' letter which is placed on top of my wooden jewellery box, and attach it to his leg.
No sooner had the letter been securely tied, did he fly off. I watch him as his wings flap over and over again until I can't see him anymore.
I pick up the slice of cake and sit down by the window. I prop my legs up so they're sitting just under my chin, and begin to nibble off the slice of cake.
In just under five days I will be going to the Quidditch World Cup with Draco, and it is going to be an experience I will remember forever. I just know it.

A/N
I've finally updated! Yay!
I'm really sorry for the long wait, I have been busy with Christmas and New Year, and I've had slight writer's block which isn't fun when you need to update. But, I think I'm alright to write again, so I should be able to update at least another two times this month, because of school break.
On another note, what did you think of the chapter. It's not one of my favourites, but I'm okay with it.
What do you think of Sarah going to the Cup with Draco? Do you think anything might happen? I don't know if there will *smirk*
Until next time!
~Elise
