Ch8: "Enemies of the Heir Beware!"
"Miss Potter, Miss Fields and Miss Granger! Come here."
Amy, Hermione and I walk over to Professor McGonagall who is beckoning us over from the entrance to the Great Hall at breakfast on Monday morning.
"Yes, Professor McGonagall?" I ask.
"Now, as you probably already know, Olivia Fields will be coming this morning. I would like you three to show her around and make her welcome."
I nod. "Sure. Is she in Gryffindor?"
"She was sorted last night. There will be an new bed placed in your dormitory. She is in all of your classes and she has already signed up for the Gobstones Club."
"Oh, thank you. Where is she?" Amy asks.
"Up in Professor Dumbledore's office. Follow me, girls."
I glance at Harry, Ron and Bonnie who are looking at us as if to say "what's going on".
I give them a look back as if to say "don't worry, talk to you soon".
Amy, Hermione and I follow Professor McGonagall up the flights of stairs, all the way to Dumbledore's office. There is no door. Just two gargoyles. What are they for? Is this some sort of password, or decoration?
"Sherbet Lemon." Professor McGonagall says, commandingly and the gargoyles spring from their position to reveal an archway with stairs that go up.
I love magic!
Professor McGonagall steps foreword and starts to climb, Amy, Hermione and I follow.
We reach a door with a golden knock. Professor McGonagall raps on the door three times and we hear a "come in" from inside.
We follow Professor McGonagall inside.
Professor Dumbledore's office is amazing! It's a circular room with all sorts of instruments around the walls, a large desk with the sorting hat placed on and two staircases that lead up to a personal library. So cool!
"Oh good, thank you Minerva." Professor Dumbledore says. "Now, Sarah, Amy, Hermione, this is Olivia Fields."
Standing before us is a girl with long blonde hair. She's tall and pretty with her sky blue eyes.
"Um, hi." Olivia says. "I'm Olivia, Olivia Fields."
I shake her hand. "I'm Sarah Potter."
"I'm Hermione Granger." Hermione says, shaking Olivia's hand also.
She nods. "And you are?" She asks Amy.
"Oh, I'm Amy, Amy...Fields."
"That's weird. Same last name. How coincidental!" Olivia says, happily.
"Uh...yeah...coincidental." Amy says.
This conversation is getting really awkward.
"So, girls. I would like you, Sarah, Amy and Hermione, to show Olivia here around the school. She has been sorted into Gryffindor and will be sharing a dormitory with you." Professor Dumbledore tells us. "And you three are going to team up to help bring Olivia up to speed with your classes."
"Sure thing, Professor Dumbledore!" I say, and I fake salut him.
He chuckles. "Now, have fun."
Together, Amy, Olivia, Hermione I exit Dumbledore's office and start to descend back downstairs.
"So, you're Sarah Potter? The Girl Who Lived?"
"Uh, yeah I am." I say.
"Well, I kinda only found out about you last year. I was brought up with muggles, is that what they are?"
"Yep, muggles."
"Yeah."
We make our way over to the Gryffindor common room.
"So, what school did you come from, Olivia?" Amy asks.
"Eton. I was going to come to Hogwarts, but my aunt and uncle wanted somewhere closer to home."
"I've heard of Eton. Is it nice?" Hermione asks quickly.
"Uh, yeah." Olivia says awkwardly.
"You live with your aunt and uncle? Where are your parents?" Amy asks.
Olivia's face changes from happy to sad. "My parents died in a car crash. My aunt and uncle took me in. I am only child, so I don't have any siblings that I lost-at least that's what my aunt and uncle told me."
Amy and I share a look. Are they related?
We soon reach the common room.
"This is our common room." I say. "The password is Wattlebird."
The fat lady portrait opens to reveal the hole to climb through. We let Olivia climb through first.
I climb in after to see her staring around the room in awe, Amy and Hermione follow me.
"Cool, huh?" I say. "Come and see our dormitory."
"This is much better than Eton." Olivia says, following Amy, Hermione and I.
"I know right." I say and lead her into the dormitory.
"Whoa! Lots of red." Olivia says.
"Yeah, you'll get used to it." Amy says.
Maybe they aren't related, but it's not my business, I won't look into it.
After we show Olivia around the castle, we should introduce her to Harry, Bonnie and Ron!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
October is here. Olivia has been her for a few weeks now, and she's settling in well. She sits with us at meals, but she hangs out with both us and Lavender and Pavarti. I don't mind, we're are pretty big group, I guess.
As always, the weeks leading up to Halloween, bring the cold. Daily I hear the pitter patter of raindrops the size of bullets hit the windows and the lake filling rapidly.
Fred, George, Amy and I have pulled a few pranks. In our first week, we each got detention for hiding Mrs Norris. That was pretty funny. We almost got detention for switching Lockhart's hair products with glue, and for setting gobstones through Snape's office so that he'd step on them. Wow, we haven't even been here for a month and I've already gotten three detentions; the one for kidnapping Mrs Norris, then I got two from Snape, one for back chatting in Potions and one for recommending to use shampoo, I mean, is he going to keep his hair greasy for the rest of his life? Might as well recommend it.
Even with the huge downpours of rain, Wood is still continuing Quidditch practice. After each practice, we come back to the common room drenched and muddy.
Fred, George and I give a report on the Slytherins-we've been spying on their practice sessions-how when they fly, they are just green blurs. Those Nimbus Two-Thousand and Ones are extremely fast.
So, now Harry and I are traipsing us to Gryffindor tower, drenched in water, muddy and cold. I need to get up to the dormitory and have a nice warm shower...
As we are walking, we find Nearly Headless Nick, floating around deep in thought.
I don't want to talk right now, I just want my shower...
"Hello Nick." Harry says. I take this as my opportunity to escape.
I quickly run past, but I somehow manage to trip over Mrs Norris. Oh-no! I'm covered in mud and leaving a trail behind me. Filch is going to kill me.
Mrs Norris stares at me with her lamp-like yellow eyes. She lets out a high-pitched meow. I'm done for.
I start to run, I bolt my way to Gryffindor tower. I don't stop until I reach the Fat Lady.
"W-Wattlebird." I gasp, out of air.
The portrait swings open and I scramble through as quickly as I can. I made it!
I race up to the dormitory and straight into the bathroom. I take off my muddy robes and shower.
I get out and it's only eight o'clock. I go downstairs to find Harry, Ron, Hermione, Bonnie and Amy sitting on couches by the fire.
"A Deathday Party?" Hermione, Amy and Bonnie ask in sync.
"Whose Deathday Party?" I ask, plopping down beside Harry.
"Nearly Headless Nick's." Harry says.
Harry launches into a story about how he got caught by Filch for 'befouling the castle', but Peeves the Poltergeist smashed something and he escaped before Filch could punish him. Apparently Nick persuaded Peeves, not that he'd need to do much persuading, to smash something right above Filch's office, so that Harry could escape. For helping Harry, Nick wanted Harry to come to his Deathday Party. Harry reluctantly agreed and then Nick invited all of us.
"Do I have to go?" I complain.
I really don't want to go. I know what a Deathday is. A Deathday is a celebration of when you died. How exciting. Note the sarcasm. I would rather go to the annual Halloween feast. I mean, who
wants to celebrate their death?
"I bet there aren't many living people who can say they've been to one of those." Hermione says. "It'll be fascinating."
"Why would someone want to celebrate the day they died?" Ron says. "Sound depressing to me."
"Yeah." Bonnie says.
Okay, I swear Bonnie has a crush on Ron. It's so obvious. They'd be so cute together!
"Well, I'm not going. I'm going to the feast-" I say.
"Please Sarah?" Hermione pleads.
"I don't want to go either." Amy says.
"Thank you Amy." I say.
"Please?" Hermione begs. She puts on a puppy-dog face.
"Fine. For half and hour only, then I'm leaving." I say.
"Me too." Amy says.
That's sorted. If we aren't at this Deathday Party for long, we should be back in time for the feast.
"Right, I'm going over to Fred and George, they're experimenting." I say. "Coming Amy?"
"Nah, I'd better do this homework." She says.
"Party-pooper." I say and I stroll over to Fred and George.
"Sarah!" They cry, beckoning us to them.
"What are you guys doing now?" I ask. In front of them on a table, is a bright orange Salamander. A Salamander is a fire-dwelling lizard looking creature.
"We're trying to see what will happen if we feed a Filbuster firework to one of these." George says, pointing at the Salamander.
Eugh, not the best experiment. "Well, I'm going to leave you guys to that." I say and I go back up to the dormitory to read until I eventually fall asleep.
For the days leading up to Halloween, the rest of the school are happily chatting about the Halloween feast. I am now regretting saying yes to this Deathday Party. I found out that Dumbledore hired a group of dancing skeletons for the entertainment. I wish I could be there to see it.
"You did promise me, Sarah." Hermione says bossily.
So, at seven o'clock that evening, Harry, Hermione, Ron, Bonnie, Amy and I make our way past the Great Hall where I can smell the great feast, and down to the dungeons.
All along the passageway to Nick's 'party', candles are along the walls. This is definitely not going to be cheerful. It's far from creepy, I want to turn around and run back to the Great Hall and enjoy a great feast with the rest of the students.
But, I shiver and take more steps towards where Harry said the party is.
I hear a weird noise, like scraping on a chalkboard. It's sends a shiver down my spine, that noise always makes me shiver. Where is it coming from?
"Is that supposed to be music?" Ron says.
"Can I please go, I'm really creeped out." I say, pleadingly.
"No Sarah, you promised." Hermione says
"Half and hour." I say. "It's been like fifteen."
"No it hasn't." Hermione says.
"It takes at least ten minutes to get down here." I point out. "And plus, how am I meant to leave without it being rude?"
"Fine, Sarah, go. But you'll be on your own."
"I'll go with her." Amy says.
I beam at her.
"Amy! You're supposed to get her to stay." Hermione says.
But Amy and I run as fast as we can from the dungeon and upstairs to the Great Hall.
We walk inside. Nobody looks at us, they're just happily eating and talking. Amy and I take our seats with Olivia, Pavarti, Lavender, Neville, Dean and Seamus.
We hungrily eat our fill and turn to watch the dance troupe of skeletons Dumbledore hired. They are quite the entertainment.
Once we've had enough of the dancing skeletons, Amy and I leave. That's when I hear it.
"Rip...tear...kill..."
I look around, horrified. Where is that voice coming from? I've never heard it before.
"Sarah? What's wrong?" Amy asks.
"Didn't you hear it?"
"Hear what?"
"That voice." I say, looking around again.
"What voice? Sarah, what's going on?"
That's when it hits me. Harry heard a voice when he had that detention with Lockhart. I wonder if it's the same one?
"We have to find-wait."
The voice is back.
"...so hungry...for so long..."
"Did you hear it?"
"No, Sarah, you're scaring me. If this is some Halloween joke, I will kill you." Amy says.
"It's not. Just listen."
"...kill...time to kill..."
The voice is growing fainter. It's moving.
"Follow me." I say, moving along, up the stairs, away from the entrance hall.
We keep walking up and up and up, following the voice.
"Sarah, what're we-"
"Shh!" I say.
I place my head against the wall. I can hear the voice from the floor above us.
"...I smell blood...I SMELL BLOOD!"
My heart is racing at an unhealthy rate. I want to know whose voice this is-no, I need to know whose voice it is. It going to kill.
"It's going to kill !" I say, sprinting up to the next floor.
I sprint until I come craning into something.
It's Harry.
"Sarah! Can you hear it?" He asks.
"Yes! Let's go!"
Together Harry and I sprint up to the second floor. We run down each passage until we reach one last deserted passage.
Hermione, Amy, Bonnie and Ron come up behind us panting.
"Harry, Sarah!" Ron pants. "What's going on?"
Hermione gasps, pointing down the corridor. "Look!"
There is something shining on the wall ahead. We slowly approach it. The voice is gone, there is a pounding in my ears. This is not going to be good.
On the wall, shining in red, shimmering between the two windows from the firelight are:
THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS HAS BEEN OPENED.
ENEMIES OF THE HEIR, BEWARE.
Bonnie gasps from beside me.
"What's that-hanging beneath it?" Amy asks.
I edge nearer. Now I gasp. I almost slip over, there is a large puddle of water on the floor. As we edge nearer, we all realise what it is at once, and we leap backwards.
It's Mrs Norris, Filch's cat.
