Ch17: The Chamber of Secrets

I feel myself slide to the floor. I don't feel myself touching the floor.

Bonnie's been taken. She's my sister. I need to save her, but how?

I feel Hermione's cool touch on my shoulder. She gives me a sympathetic look, but I can tell she's hurt too.

"We'll send all the students home first thing tomorrow." McGonagall says after a while. "I'm afraid this is the end of Hogwarts. Dumbledore always said-"

At that moment, the staffroom door bangs open and Lockhart comes in.

"Sorry, must've dozed off. What did I miss?" He says.

Oh I don't know, my sister and my friends' sister just got taken by a Basilisk into the Chamber of Secrets and left to die, but you know nothing much while you were asleep. Bloody git.

Snape steps foreword to Lockhart. "Just the man. Two girls have been snatched by the monster and taken to the Chamber. Weren't you saying that all along you knew where the entrance to the Chamber was?"

I let out a smile. Sometimes Snape isn't such a prat.

Lockhart blanches.

"I-well-I-" He stutters.

"Yes," Professor Flitwick says. "Didn't you say you knew what was inside it?"

"D-did I? I don't recall..."

Ha, Lockhart is stupid. He doesn't know anything. I knew he couldn't do anything remotely dangerous. Seriously, he couldn't even battle a few pixies, I mean come on. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't actually him who did those things in his books.

"I certainly remember you saying you were sorry you hadn't had a crack at the monster before Hagrid was arrested." Snape says. "Didn't you say that the whole affair had been bungled, and that you should have been given free rein from the first?"

Lockhart stares around at the rest of the staff.

"I...I really never...you may have misunderstood..."

"Then it's settled. We'll leave you to face the monster and save the girls." McGonagall says. "Tonight would be an excellent time to do it. We'll make sure everyone is out of your way. You'll be able to tackle the mister all by yourself. A free rein at last."

Lockhart looks around desperately for someone to help him. No one does. He looks scared.

"V-very well." He says. "I'll-I'll be in my office, getting-getting ready."

And he leaves.

"Right," McGonagall says. "That's got him out of the road. The Heads of Houses should,go and inform the students of what's happened. Tell them that the Hogwarts Express will take them home first thing in the morning. Will the rest of you please make sure no students have been left outside of their dormitories."

The teachers rose, and left one-by-one.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
I didn't follow McGonagall to the Gryffindor Common Room. I couldn't bear it. I couldn't bear seeing Fred's, George's, Amy's and Percy's reactions.
So, I went to the library. I've recently figured how to use items now. I can't hold things, but I can sit on them. So, I sit on one of the chairs in the library and just cry.
Bonnie, my only sister, dead. She might not be dead now, but she will be. She can't be saved. I feel so helpless, I can't even help her in the slightest.
Hermione eventually comes in and hugs me tight. I just cry into her arms until there are no tears left.
Once I'm finished, Hermione wipes my eyes and says,
"Hey, you wanna find the others? And-"
"No." I say. "They'll just be all depressed."
"But I'm sure Harry and Ron-"
"Will be all depressed." I say again. "Hermione, they're as good as dead, and we can't help them."
"Harry and Ron know where the Chamber is. They'll follow Lockhart. I sure of it." Hermione says, hopefully.
"And if they don't?"
"Sarah, just be optimistic. You never know if they go or not if you don't find out. Let's go."
I reluctantly get up and follow Hermione out of the library.
As we turn a corner, I see a flash of black, ginger and blonde. Harry, Ron and Lockhart.
"Hermione, that way." I say, pointing to where I saw them.
She nods and we go in that direction. They're going to Moaning Myrtle's bathroom.
"Oh, it's you." Myrtle says, as we enter the bathroom. Myrtle looks over at where Hermione and I are. She can see us?
She doesn't say anything.
"What do you want this time?" She says to Harry.
"To ask you how you died." Harry says.
Myrtle's expression changes. She looks as though she's never been asked such a flattering question. Odd.
"Ooh, it was dreadful." She says happily. "It happened right here, in this cubicle." She point to the cubicle where she must've come out from. "I remember it so well. I'd hidden in here because Olive Hornby was teasing me about my glasses. The door was locked and I was crying, and then I heard someone come in. They said something in a funny language I didn't know. And I could tell it was a boy speaking. So I unlocked the door so I could tell him to go away. And then, I died."
"How?" Harry asks.
I don't know," she says. "I just remember seeing a pair of great, big, yellow eyes staring at me. I seized up and then I floated away..." She looks dreamily at Harry.
Someone has a crush.
"And then I came back. I was determined to haunt Olive Hornby. Oh, she was sorry she'd ever laughed at my glasses."
"Where did you see the eyes?" Harry asks.
"Over there, by that sink." Myrtle says, pointing to a single basin.
Harry and Ron hurry over to it. Hermione and I follow.
It's no different to the other sinks. I look more closely at it.
I gasp. There's a snake engraved on the side of the tap. This definitely has to be the entrance. If not then I'll give you a cookie...jokes, I won't.
Harry looks closely at it, and finally sees the engraved snake.
"This is it, Ron." He whispers. "This is the entrance."
I look over at Hermione, who doesn't look surprised.
"We should follow them, if they can figure out how to open it." I say.
"We should." She replies.
I turn back to Harry and Ron.
"Say something," Ron says. "Say something in Parsletongue."
Harry looks nervously at the tap.
"Open up." He says.
Nothing happens.
"English." Ron says.
Harry tries again, concentrating a but harder.
"Open up."
Suddenly, the tap glows bright and started to spin. Next, the sink starts to move. It sinks into the floor, out of sight, leaving a large man-sized pipe.
"Whoa." Is all I say.
"That's 'whoa' all right." Hermione says.
"I'm going down there." Harry says.
Nah duh, Harry, isn't that what you came here for?
"Me too." Ron says.
They look over at Lockhart. He's still here? Thought he would have done a runner.
"You seem to hardly need me," He says, after a short pause. "I'll just-"
"You first." Harry says sternly, as Lockhart heads toward the door.
Lockhart spins around, a look of pure terror on his face.
"Boys, what good will it do-"
Harry jabs his wand to Lockhart's back, edging him to the pipe.
Lockhart slips his legs into the hole.
"I really don't think-"
Ron gives him a push and Lockhart yells as he falls into the pipe. After a few seconds, we hear his voice echoing through the pipe.
"It really is filthy down here."
Harry and Ron look at each other. The nod and Harry lowers himself into the pipe. Then he too slides out of sight. Then Ron goes.
"So, should we follow or stay?" Hermione asks.
"Go." I say.
"Wait we can't really slide down it." Hermione says.
"We'll get down there." I say.
I step up to the pipe. I look down. Black.
I sit down and hang my legs over the side. "See you down there." I say and I lower myself down and let go.
I can't feel anything as I rush against the wind down the pipe, which is basically a dark, slimy, endless slide. I can see more pipes branching off, but with the speed if this one, it seems impossible to go down them. Further down I go, deeper into the school. I can hear Hermione screaming behind me and she slides.
Finally, the pipe levels out and I shoot out of the end, floating to the ground. That was fun.
I look around for Harry, Ron and Lockhart. I see them walking along a passageway. I run up to meet them, following the light of their wands-well except Lockhart's-Hermione following close behind.
They suddenly stop at a large body. It must be the Basilisk, but it looks, hollow.
"Maybe it's asleep." Harry breathes. Lockhart has his hands planted over his eyes and Ron is just standing with Harry, looking terrified.
"That's one big snake." Ron says.
"Hang on," Harry says. "It's not a snake, it's a snake skin."
Suddenly, Lockhart falls to the ground, his knees given way.
I roll me eyes and look over at Hermione.
"Do you still think he's one of the best Wizards in the world?" I ask, grinning.
Hermione just sticks her tongue out at me. I smile and turn back to the others.
"Get up." Ron says, pointing his wand at Lockhart.
Lockhart gets to his feet, and then randomly dives at Ron, knocking him to the ground.
Harry jumps forward and I get out my wand. But we're too late. Lockhart straightens up, panting, holding Ron's wand.
"The adventure ends here boys." He says. "I'll take a piece of this skin up to the school and tell them how I was too late to save the girl, and that you two tragically lost your minds at the sight of her mangled body. Say goodbye to your memories."
He raises Ron's spellotaped wand high above his head, as do I.
"Obliviate!" Lockhart yells, before it even do anything.
Suddenly, the wand explodes, with a force as powerful as a small bomb. Great big chunks of rock fall from the ceiling, crashing to the ground, shaking the floor. I grab Hermione's hand and step away. We watch as the rocks fall from the ceiling.
Next moment, the rocks have stopped falling and there is a pile of them blocking our way forward.
I look over to Ron, who is staring dumbfounded.
Where's Harry? No. He can't have been hurt by the rocks, he can't have.
I start to panic. What if he has? What if he dies from impact? Then I would lose two siblings. No, this can't happen.
Then I hear his voice. "Ron? Ron are you okay? Ron!"
I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding.
"I'm here!" Ron yells. "I'm okay. This git's not. The memory charm backfired!"
Ron then kicks Lockhart in the shin and he lets out a loud 'ow!'.
"What do we now?" Ron asks desperately. "It'll take ages to shift these rocks."
Harry doesn't say anything.
I walk forward and tug at one of the rocks. It slips away and falls down to Ron's feet. He jumps in surprise. I can actually help.
Ron then picks up a small rock that fell too, and whacks Lockhart in the arm with it. He lets out another loud 'ow!'.
"Ugh, they're wasting time." I say.
Hermione nods knowingly.
"Wait there." Harry finally says after a long silence. "Wait with Lockhart. I'll go on. If I'm not back in an hour..."
He pauses.
"I'll try and shift some of this rock." Ron says, obviously trying to stay calm. "So you can - so you can get back through. And Harry-"
"See you in a bit." Harry interrupts. He seems like he's trying to stay calm too. And I hear his echoing footsteps as he walks away.
Ron looks over at Lockhart who is playing with the rock Ron hit him with earlier.
"Hello." Lockhart says. "It's an odd sort of place isn't it? Do you live here?"
I giggle and look over to Hermione who shakes her head in amusement.
"No." Ron says, grabbing the rock and hitting him in the head. Lockhart slumps back, knocked out.
"I'm guessing you don't think Lockhart is so good now, eh Hermione?" I say, smirking.
"Oh shut up Sarah. Let's help Ron with these rocks." She replies.
"And how do we do that without scaring him?" I ask.
"I don't know, pull on ones close to where he is so it looks like they're falling from where he's pulling?"
"Good idea." I say. "Wait, maybe one of us should follow Harry so he stays safe."
"Sarah, there isn't much we can do-"
"You told me to stay positive, right? I can help." I say.
She sighs. "Fine, I'll stay here and help Ron while you follow Harry."
I nod, and hug her before I walk through the rocks. I look ahead. Dark.
"Lumos." I say and my wand lights up. It doesn't show too much light, but it's enough. I run forward until I reach a door thing. It's closed.
Damn it, I'm not too good at Parseltongue.
I clear my throat.
"Open."
Nothing.
I stare at the snakes. "Open."
Then, the serpents part and the wall opens. The halves move smoothly out of sight.
Shaking, I step forward and inside the door.
