Ch2: Diagon Alley
For us to get to Diagon Alley, we have to travel by Floo Powder - which is a form of transport used by wizards where we go from place to place via fireplace. I have only traveled this way a few times, before my mother died. We used to go to The Leaky Cauldron - a pub, which, if you go through the back courtyard, you can get to Diagon Alley. Mum and Dad never let us go into Diagon Alley so that it was an experience for us when we were soon to go to Hogwarts. I finally get to venture into the place I have dreamt of going for years.
I wait with Bonnie in front of the fireplace, with my small carry bag plastered to my side, which has the scroll of parchment that came with my Hogwarts letter with the list of requirements for my first year, and my purse which I will put my money into. I wonder whether my parents had a vault at Gringotts, the Wizard Bank?
Soon Dad joins us, after making sure he had picked up everything we needed - including the key to the family vault.
"Ready to go, girls?" He asks, picking up the flower pot above the fireplace.
"Sure am!" I say excitedly, bouncing on the balls of my feet.
"Yup!" Bonnie says, just as excitedly. She seems to have slightly forgiven Dad over the past few hours. She can't stay angry at people for long, not matter what they've done.
"Alrighty then, let's go. Who wants to go first?" Dad says, holding out the pot containing the Floo Powder. For you to actually travel by the Floo Network, you need the actual Floo Powder, which, when you stand in the fireplace, you chuck at the ground whilst saying the name of the location you are headed to arrive at that place. It's simple. You just have to remember to close your eyes so you don't get ash in your eyes and to keep your elbows tucked in to avoid getting cuts and scrapes.
"I'll go," I say, stepping forward into the fireplace, grabbing a handful of powder on the way.
"Okay, don't forget to speak clearly," Dad says, stepping back.
I take a deep breath before I say, "The Leaky Cauldron!"
In a cloud of smoke I start to spin. I shut my eyes tight and keep my elbows tucked in. The roaring in my ears is strong, but not unbearable. Within a matter of seconds, I feel a stone cold floor.
I'm here!
I get up and brush myself off, waiting for Dad and Bonnie to arrive.
I take a look at my surroundings. Not much has changed since I was last here, which was only three years ago. The pub is filled with witches and wizards drinking tankards of Firewhiskey, seated at wooden tables on wooden chairs with soft red cushions. Dim lights hang high upon the ceiling and the old barman is standing behind the wooden bar talking and serving thirsty customers.
Bonnie and Dad come through the fireplace and we set off out the back door of the pub-with Dad saying hello to a few people-and into the courtyard. The only things in the courtyard are a few rusty bins and a gigantic brick wall.
"Is this entrance?" I ask Dad, pointing to the brick wall.
Dad nods and pull out his wand. He taps the wall three times muttering, "Three up, two across..."
The brick that he tapped starts to quiver. The surrounding bricks start to move, creating a hole in the wall which turns into an archway leading to-
"Diagon Alley!" Bonnie exclaims, jumping up and down.
This is so exciting!
"Come on, girls!" Dad says, smiling, ushering us through the archway.
Dad, Bonnie and I make our way down the crowded, cobbled road of Diagon Alley, squeezing past the many witches and wizards doing their everyday shopping.
All along the sides of the road are shops. Most of which have battered signs and people opening and closing doors.
At the very end of the street, before a corner, there is a tall, marble white building with few windows and tall, white marble columns out the front.
"What's this place, Dad?" I ask, as we continue to walk toward the building.
"Gringotts," Dad answers and pushes open the huge, wooden double doors.
Ah, Gringotts.
Once we go inside, the first things I notice are the weird creatures walking around. Goblins. They're small creatures with peach-coloured, wrinkly skin, heads too large for their bodies and long fingers and feet. Most of them are sat at desks on either side of the room working, while there are a few walking around with carts and paperwork.
Bonnie and I follow Dad up to the front desk where a goblin is sat working. Dad clears his throat and the goblin looks up, not saying a word.
"I would like to make a trip to two vaults, please," he says.
I'm guessing the second vault must be my parents' vault. I wonder if there's much money now that they're gone?
Dad pulls out two, almost identical keys. "To the Lupin and Potter vaults."
The goblin just nods, taking the keys. It gets up and moves away. What's it doing?
My question is answered when it comes back moments later with a second goblin.
"Griphook will now take you to your vault," the Goblin says, and Griphook directs us to a gate at the back.
He takes us to a cart with seven seats-one for himself and six for the passengers.
As soon as we all sit down, the cart lurches forward and takes off at a very high speed. We go around twists and bends at top speed making me feel queasy.
At long last the cart stops at a halt, making me lurch forward. We slowly step out of the cart, and Bonnie looks slightly green.
I look at the number above the vault that we're at. 687. I wonder if this is our vault or my parents' vault?
Griphook pulls out one of the small keys Dad gave him and tells us to step back as he puts the key in the small hole.
The door of the vault swings open to reveal mounds of gold, silver and bronze coins. I gasp at all the money in awe. This must be my parents' vault, because I know Dad doesn't have a lot of money.
"Here you go, Sarah," Dad says.
"Is this all mine?" I ask, gaping at the amount of money.
"Yours and your brother's," Dad says.
I bend down and scoop up some of the money from each pile into my small purse.
When I'm finished, Griphook closes the door and we go back to the cart. Oh no, not the cart again.
Once again we speed off, going at the same speed as before. We get out at vault 432.
Same as before, Griphook takes out a key - the other key this time - and unlocks the vault to reveal gold. There isn't much money in our vault. There hasn't been much ever since Mum died and Dad couldn't get work.
You see, my Dad is a werewolf. He's not dangerous or anything. He was bitten when he was a kid and has been one ever since. Every month he takes a potion Mum used to make for him for when he would turn. He said that the one he makes isn't a powerful as how Mum used to make it, but it is good enough for him to sit in his bedroom and keep us safe. This is the reason Dad can't get work because no one will hire a werewolf. No matter how safe he is. We just have to make do with the money left from when Mum died.
Dad scoops up a quarter of the money there and we leave.
One last time we get on the cart and take off. Right, I'm never going on this thing again. I'll get Dad to get my gold out or something next year. I hate this thing.
"Okay, let's go get your school things," Dad says as we come out of Gringotts.
I nod and Bonnie slightly nods. She still looks kind of green.
The first shop we go to is Flourish and Blotts, the book shop. I get out the scroll of parchment with the list of things I need to get: and look at the books:
The Standard Book of Spells Grade 1 by Miranda Goshawk
A History of Magic by Bathilda Bagshot
Magical Theory by Adalbert Waffling
A Beginners Guide to Transfiguration by Emeric Switch
One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi by Phillida Spore
Magical Drafts and Potions by Arsenius Jigger
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by New Scamander
The Dark Force: A Guide to Self-Protection by Quentin Trimble
Cool. I manage to find my way around the tall bookshelves all around the room, plus the upstairs part of the massive bookstore and find the required books. After at least ten minutes, I meet back with Dad and Bonnie at the counter to pay. They weren't too expensive.
Next we go and get out uniform. On the list it said to get three pairs of plain black work robes, one black pointed at for daywear, a pair of dragon hide gloves and a winter cloak. Easy.
Once Bonnie and I were fitted for our robes and paid for them, we moved onto the other shops to get the rest of our supplies. We each got the required standard pewter cauldron, glass phials, a telescope, brass scales and standard ingredients for potions.
The only things left to get are our wands which I'm really excited about getting. Every witch or wizard needs a wand. I've read that some witches and wizards can perform magic without a wand, but it isn't as effective.
"Girls," Dad says as we leave the Apothecary after getting our potions ingredients. "How about we get some drinks before we get your wands, yeah?"
Bonnie and I nod as we walk back down to the Leaky Cauldron.
Inside its way more busy than it was earlier. People must meet up to have drinks together at two in the afternoon.
We manage to scavenge the only table left at the back of the pub. Bonnie and I sit while Dad goes and orders three glasses of pumpkin juice.
Moments later he comes back with a tray carrying three tall glasses of an orange coloured liquid. I've never tried pumpkin juice before, and I hope it tastes good because I've heard good things about it.
"Here we go..." Dad says, handing both of us one of the drinks and one for himself.
I take the glass and it's nice and cold, perfect for this hot day. I take a small sip. This is delicious, I can see what people mean. I finish the drink within minutes.
Bonnie and I get out a few of the new books and flick through them, needing to shout over the volume of the people's chatter.
Suddenly, the chatter dies and I hear the sound of moving chairs. I look around the pub.
At the front door, I see a giant of a man, and standing in front of him is a boy with jet black hair and glasses.
I listen to the few whispers ringing throughout the pub.
It's Harry Potter.
My brother.
