Ch1: Birthday Surprises
I tap my feet impatiently as I wait outside the counsellors' office with my twin sister, Bonnie.
Bonnie and I have been in counselling ever since our mother, Amelia, was killed in an experiment when I was eight. No, she was not a scientist. She was a witch. You heard me right, a witch. Not one of those silly witches in stories with the long noses and high pitched cackles that fly around on broomsticks. Just a human being with magic. I'm a witch too. So is Bonnie and my father, but he is known as a wizard.
She was experimenting with magic when she was killed, and I was there to witness it. Seeing her eyes widen in fear will scar me for life. Even though I am only ten, it still hurts, and that's why I am in counselling.
"Sarah," comes a soft voice from the door.
I turn my head and there is Ms White, my counsellor.
I look over at Bonnie and get up to enter the all too familiar room.
It has just simple white walls with a wooden floor. A wooden desk is situated the middle of the room, with a single chair in front. There's no personalisation to the room, so that it won't distract the students.
"So, Sarah," Ms White asks. "How have you been?"
"I've been good, I guess," I say, and we fall into our usual, monthly routine of questions and advice.
After half an hour, it's time to go. I go back to class as Bonnie goes in.
I'm quite different from my family. While Mum and Bonnie have soft blonde hair and Dad has thin brown hair, I'm stuck with flaming red hair that falls down my back in soft waves. The only thing that I have in common is my eyes. I have bright emerald green eyes, like Mum did. I also have a lightning bolt scar on my wrist, that I got from cutting my wrist on the coffee table when I was young. It's really weird because every once in a while it prickles, but a moment later it's fine.
I've gotten used to it after all these years.
Tomorrow is my eleventh birthday, and my father, Remus Lupin, told me that I would receive a letter accepting me into Hogwarts, a school for witches and wizards. I've been showing signs of magic for about a year; accidentally lighting the fire, turning taps on, et cetera.
When I get to Hogwarts, I hope that I'll be sorted into Gryffindor like my parents, but I wouldn't mind any of the houses. Unless it's Slytherin as it's known that there isn't someone who was in Slytherin that hasn't gone to the Dark side.
Soon the last bell rings and we are let out.
"I'm going to miss you, Sarah," My friend Gabby says, hugging me before she joins the rest of the crowd out of the school front doors
"Have fun at Boarding school!" Another friend, Matt, says, shaking my hand. "Also, Happy Birthday for tomorrow!"
"Bye!" I say, before leaving myself.
I'd told my Muggle friends that I would be going to Boarding school. I couldn't tell them about Hogwarts, or that would probably break some Wizarding law or something.
I meet up with Bonnie outside the school to catch the bus home. I take out my book as usual, and what feels like a moment later, we're home.
"Hey, girls," Dad says, coming down the hall when we get inside. "How was school?"
"Same old, same old," Bonnie says, dropping her bag in our room.
"We did watch a movie, though," I say, doing the same.
"That's good. Now, I'd better go get dinner started," he says, going into the kitchen.
Bonnie and I go into the living room to watch Doctor Who, our favourite Muggle TV show.
"Ah, I just love David Tennant," Bonnie sighs.
I just shake my head, smiling, and continue watching.
At six o'clock, Dad calls us for dinner; fish and chips. Great, I hate fish.
After dinner, we watch our usual Friday night movie before we head off to bed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Wake up, Sarah!" Bonnie says, jumping on my bed the next morning.
I groan, as I open my eyes. Bonnie is sitting over me, her head not too far from my face.
"Merlin's Beard, Bonnie!" I exclaim as I jump, sitting up.
She just giggles and jumps off the bed. "Come on, Happy Birthday!"
Right! It's July 31st!
Dad then bursts open the door and walks in, carrying a cake in his hands, topped with two candles.
"Happy Birthday to-" he sings loudly, but stops. "Oh, you're already awake," he says, seeing Bonnie standing up and me sitting up. "Oh well..." And he continues singing.
I roll my eyes. Mum and Dad always came in on our birthday, singing 'Happy Birthday' and carrying a cake. It happened every year.
He sits the cake on the dresser, on the only space available on it and passes Bonnie and I a letter each.
Our Hogwarts letters!
I take mine and rip it open, not bothering to read the front.
Dear Miss Potter,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.
Term begins on 1 September. We await your owl by no later than 31 July.
Sincerely, Prof M McGonagall, Deputy Headmistress
Huh, that's odd, it's addressed to Miss Potter.
"Dad, I think I've got the wrong letter," I say, flipping the envelope over in my hands.
"What?" Dad says.
"I think I've got the wrong letter," I repeat. "This is addressed to Miss Potter, not me."
Dad freezes. What's going on?
"Uh, I've got a bit of explaining to do. I was dreading this day," Dad says.
"What is it?" Bonnie asks, curiously.
"Sarah, you're...you're not actually my daughter," Dad says.
My heart drops. He's not my father? Am I adopted? Who are my real parents? How does this work, Bonnie and I are twins, does that mean she's not his either?
"I'm sorry I had to tell you like this," Dad says, looking down.
"Does that mean Bonnie isn't your daughter either? Because we're twins?" I ask.
"No. I mean, Bonnie is mine. I'll have to explain it all," Dad says.
"Please do," I say crossing my arms. How could he lie to me, and Bonnie?
Dad sighs. "It's true that you are a Potter, not a Lupin," he says. "You know Harry Potter-"
Harry Potter is a famous boy who survived the Avada Kedarvra curse, a spell that murders people, and is the only one who has ever survived it. He is known as the Boy Who Lived. His parents were killed, though. From what I know, he's the same age as Bonnie and I, so he will be in our year at Hogwarts.
"-he...he's your brother," Dad says.
I gape at him. Harry Potter, the Boy Who Lived, my brother? He's got to be joking.
"Are you serious?" I ask.
"Yes," Dad says. "Harry Potter is your brother, your actual twin. You survived the curse too, that night. You're the Girl Who Lived. See that scar on your wrist?"
I look at the lightning bolt scar that's on my wrist. It looks the same as it always had.
"That's the mark You-Know-Who left when the curse hit you. Harry has one too, but on his forehead."
"So," I say. "So, my parents are dead?"
Dad nods.
I curl up in a ball. This isn't happening. I'm just dreaming, Remus is my real father.
But he's not. This isn't all a dream, this is real.
"So, why am I with you, and not Harry?" I ask, quietly.
"Well, I'm your Godfather, which makes Bonnie your God-Sister, and your real mother sent you to me. I don't know why you and Harry were split, but Albus Dumbledore just showed up on my doorstep with you and asked me to take you in. I had to agree, because I was friends with your father," Dad explains.
I look over to Bonnie. She's sitting on her bed, arms crossed, tears falling down her cheeks. He not only lied to me, but he lied to Bonnie, too.
"So, where's Harry now?" I ask, turning back to him. "If you're my Godfather, is he with his Godfather too?"
"No.He's with your aunt and uncle, in Surrey," Dad says.
"Are they his Godparents?" I ask.
"I'm not sure. But I know his Godfather is at Azkaban-"
"Why is he in Azkaban?" I wonder what Harry's godfather had to have done to get in there. He must have done something really bad-no one just goes to Azkaban.
"He killed a lot of people," Dad says simply, not wanting to continue on the subject.
"When can I see him, Harry, I mean?" I ask, changing the subject. Now that I know about Harry, I want to meet him, if not at Hogwarts.
"Well, we're not taking a trip to down to Surrey any time soon, you might, I say might, catch him at Diagon Alley, but-"
"When can we go?" I ask, thinking the only way is at Diagon Alley.
"There's still the whole summer, Sarah. He could be going any time," Dad tells me.
I sigh. "Can we go today? Just in case?"
I pull a puppy-dog face.
"I...alright. We'll go after lunch, okay?"
I give a little smile. "Thanks...can - can I be alone for a little bit?"
Dad nods. "Are you coming Bon - oh Bonnie!" He says, going over to her bed to hug her. She shrugs him off.
"You lied, Dad!" She sobs. "You lied to us!" She turns away from him.
Dad just frowns, and walks out.
I look over to Bonnie. "Are you alright?" I ask.
She shakes her head. "He lied to us. We grew up our whole life thinking we were sisters, and in reality we're not. Does it not hurt you at all?"
"Of course it does," I say, frowning. "I just found out I'm not actually a part of this family, by blood, and my actual twin brother is the Harry Potter. This is huge. It's almost too much for me to handle."
Bonnie just nods.
"Bon, what are we going to do?" I say.
"I dunno. I'm just going to keep my distance for a while," she says, not looking at me.
I hear Dad's footsteps come to our door moments later.
"Girls," he says, stopping in the doorway. "I've got breakfast ready, if you want any, and your presents are in the kitchen too."
He leaves, which is probably the smart thing to do right now.
"You coming Bonnie?" I ask, standing up.
"I'll come. But I'm not talking to him," she replies and I nod.
"Me either."
We go down the hall into the kitchen, grab the two plates of pancakes that are sitting on the counter and sit at the dining table, which has a few presents and cards on it, and eat.
Once we finish, we decide to open the presents. I grab the two that have my name on them and Bonnie does as well.
The first present is a set of clothes; a green ombré tank top and another pair of denim shorts(good, because my other pair are wearing out). I'll wear them today, anyway.
The other present has a card stuck to it, that says the usual 'My darling Sarah, Happy Birthday, Love Dad'. Inside is a silver locket shaped as a heart and a bracelet with my name on it.
"Thanks," I say quietly, picking up a few cards on the table addressed to me. Cards from family and friends I guess.
"Hey, open the locket," Dad tells me, walking around from behind the counter.
I pick up the locket I had set to the side and open it. Inside are two pictures - one with two people; a woman with soft auburn hair and bright emerald eyes and a man with jet black hair and glasses covering hazel eyes. I don't recognise them. On the other side is a picture of two babies; one with a head full of orange hair and the other black.
I gasp. "Is that-"
"Your parents?" Dad says. "Yes."
I stare at them. I look exactly like my mother with my red hair and emerald green eyes. Harry must look like our father, but I look at him in the photo and I realise he has green eyes. The perfect mix. I'm not, I just look like our mother.
I look at Dad, and any hate for him, lost. "Thanks."
He smiles. "I knew I had to tell you, or I would have had to when I gave you that."
I smile too and I get up to hug him.
When I let go, I read the rest of the cards. Yep, all family and friends.
"We'll go to Diagon Alley after lunch, okay," Dad says, taking away our plates. "And we can get all your school things."
I nod and I have a look at what Bonnie got. She got a similar outfit to me, but the top is orange. She also got a locket, but with pictures of mum and dad, and another with both me and her when we were young. And her bracelet is the same, but with 'Bonnie' written on it.
For the rest of the morning, we just sit in our bedroom, braiding each other's hair and giving each other mini-makeovers. We don't do this often, because neither of us are very 'girly'.
Soon enough it's lunch. We stuff it down as quickly as possibly so we can get to Diagon Alley.
I can't wait!
A/N
Phew, the first chapter!
If you went back and read the original of this story, you would be able to see the HUGE difference. This one is written way better. In the original I had horrible spelling and grammar, I was extremely rushed and I was terrible at transitions. Trust me, this is heaps better.
So, this book is being entered into the Watty's, and I'd REALLY love it if you could, maybe, vote for me for the People's Choice Award? All you have to do is go to Twitter and tweet your vote for this story using the hashtag #MyWattysChoice. If you don't have a Twitter, it literally takes like 10 seconds to create an account. Okay, maybe not that quick but it's really easy.
So, I've seen this on other stories, and I though it'd be fun to ask you guys some questions, to get to know you. After each chapter I'm going to ask 3 questions, yeah?
Okay, here we go:
1. What's your favourite colour? (Mines Ravenclaw blue)
2. What country are you from? (I'm from Australia, mate)
3. Have you got any pets? (I have a little blue budgie)
Peace out guys, love you!
~Elise
