Ch19: The Forbidden Forest

*Edited*

"Sarah? Sarah?"

Amy is shaking me awake.

I open my eyes slowly.

I'd fallen asleep on the couch from last night.

"Sarah," Amy says. "You fell asleep here last night."

She chuckles.

"Oh shut up," I say, getting up.

I go upstairs and get changed into a three-quarter length midnight blue shirt, black skinny jeans and dark blue converse.

As usual, Amy and I make our way down to breakfast.

I look over at the house points.

What?

Gryffindor have lost 150 points?

That's outrageous. I sure hope it wasn't Harry and Hermione.

But surely a teacher wouldn't take 75 points from two students. Well, maybe Snape.

Amy gasps next to me.

"150 points gone? That's outrageous! That puts is in last place!"

"Yeah all those points I got from McGonagall, gone!" I exclaim

"I wonder what happened," Bonnie says, sitting down beside me.

No sooner does Harry and Hermione come and sit down, looking gloomy.

"What's up?" I ask.

Harry mumbles something.

"Didn't catch that? Speak up," I say.

"We got caught," He mumbles.

Oh dear.

"Oh no, what happened?" I ask.

"Well," Hermione says. "We got up to the tower alright but-"

"Filch caught us," Harry says.

"What? How?" I ask. "You had the cloak, right?"

"Yeah, we did, when we got up the tower," Harry says. "But we were so happy, because, 1: Norbert was gone, and 2: Malfoy had gotten detention, that we forgot the cloak."

I groan.

"You didn't?" I groan.

Harry sighs.

"Yep. So when we got down there, we ran into Filch," Hermione says. "He then took us to Professor McGonagall-"

"And McGonagall was not happy at all. What's worse is that Neville came to try and warn us-McGonagall caught him too-and she took fifty points from us," Harry says.

"Fifty?"

"Uh-huh, each!" Hermione says.

"So now we've got detention with Malfoy." Harry says.

"Ooh. That'd suck." I say.

Harry and Hermione just sigh in disappointment.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Resign?" Wood thunders.
Harry has just taken me so he could resign from the Quidditch team.
"What good will that do? How are we going to get those points back if we can't even win at Quidditch? You're our best Chaser! Sarah, why didn't you tell him not to try and resign? I'm not going to let him though."
"I tried! He wouldn't listen," I say. "He's just miserable that everyone is rude and speaking behind his back."
That is true. For three days since the truth had leaked, all the Gryffindors(but me, Ron, Hermione, Bonnie, Amy, the Weasley's and dorm mates) had turned on him. Even the Ravenclaw's and Hufflepuffs.
Quidditch isn't even fun anymore.
Now, every practice, the team would be talking about Harry and everyone they'd mention him, they'd call him 'that other Chaser'.
Exams aren't far away either. At least it's taking Harry's mind off things.
I've been finding it harder to study for exams and make it to all Quidditch practices and study for beating Quirrell to the Stone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mid-afternoon on Saturday, Harry comes bursting through the portrait hole.

"You'll never believe this..." He pants.

He launches into this. Story of how he was walking past Quirrell's classroom and heard Quirrell talking to someone.

Voldemort.

Obviously Harry thinks it's Snape and the others agree.

I go back to reading my Astronomy notes.

Harry, Ron, Hermione, Bonnie and Amy are all talking about how it has to be Snape and that Quirrell must have finally cracked.

That night I'm thinking about the cloak.

"Hey Harry," I say.

He looks up to tell me he's listening.

"Did you get our cloak back?"

"Nope. I'll get it soon though-"

"I'll get it now if you want?"

"But it's after hours. You'll get caught," He says warningly.

"I'll make sure I don't. Want to come Amy?" I ask.

"Alright," She says and we leave through the portrait hole.

It's eleven o'clock. It's past curfew but I don't care.

We make it up to the tower, grab the cloak and go down the stairs.

I gasp. As does Amy.

"Well, well, well," It's Filch.

My heart sinks. We should have put the cloak on before we came down.

"Come with me," He says.

We follow him in silence, not daring to look at each other. On the way, I stuff the cloak in my dressing gown.

We are at McGonagall's office.

Filch knocks on the door.

"Come in."

We go in.

"Oh, Filch, Miss Potter, Miss Fields," She says.

"I just caught them outside the tower m'am," Filch says.

She looks at us, stunned.

"Leave them here Filch."

Filch leaves.

She looks at us sternly.

"What were you doing?"

I gulp.

"I left my book up there and I went to get it, Amy came with me," I lie.

"At this time of night?"

"Yes," I lie. "I have Astronomy tomorrow and I had homework that I needed to finish."

"Is this right, Amy?"

Amy nods.

She sighs. "Sarah, I'm disappointed."

Does she know I'm lying?

"I am going to give you both detention and you will lose 20 points, each, for being out of bed after hours. Off you go."

We leave quietly.

At least that's better than fifty.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I haven't told Harry yet.
In the morning, Harry, Hermione, Neville, Amy and I all receive notes, each the same:
Your detention will take place at eleven o'clock tonight.
Meet Mr Filch in the Entrance Hall.
Prof. McGonagall.
"You've got one too?" Harry asks.
"Yeah. Amy and I kinda got caught last night too."
"Sarah, I told you that you'd get caught-"
"I know, We should have put the cloak on when we went down, I was stupid."
We're quiet.
At ten minutes to eleven, Harry, Hermione, Amy and I say goodbye to Ron and Bonnie and we go down to the Entrance Hall with Neville.
We go downstairs to find Filch and Malfoy already there.
"Follow me," Filch says, lighting a lamp and leading us outside.
"I bet you'll think twice about breaking a school rule again, won't you, eh?" He leers at us. "Oh yes...hard work and pain are the best teachers if you ask me...pity they let the old punishments die, you'd find yourself hanging by your thumbs in the dungeons, god I miss the screaming...I've still got the chains there, well oiled, in case they're needed...right, lets go. And don't think about running off, it'll be worse if you do."
We walk through the grounds, Neville sniffling.
I wonder what our punishment is, it has to be bad, or Filch wouldn't sound so delighted.
Ahead, I see the lighted windows of Hagrid's hut.
I hear a shout, "is that you, Filch? Hurry up I want ter get started."
I feel a spark of relief. We'll be working with Hagrid, it shouldn't be too bad.
I see Harry smile.
"I suppose you think you'll be enjoying yourself with that oaf?" Filch says, noticing Harry's relieved face, "Well, think again, boy-it's into the forest your going and if much mistaken if you'll all come out in one piece."
Neville moans. Amy and Malfoy stop dead in their tracks.
"The forest?" They say at once.
They look at each other awkwardly.
"We can go in there at night-students aren't allowed-and aren't there, werewolves?" Malfoy says.
Neville clutches onto Harry's robes.
"That's your lookout, isn't it?" Filch says. "Should've thought of them werewolves before you got into trouble, shouldn't you?"
Hagrid comes striding towards us, Fang at his heels.
"Abou' time," he says. "I bin waitin' fer half an hour already. Alright, Hermione, Harry, Sarah, Amy?"
"Shouldn't be too friendly with them, Hagrid," Filch says. "They're here to be punished, after all."
"That's why yer late is it?" Hagrid says coldly. "Yeh been lecturin' 'em, eh? 'S'not yer place ter do that. I'll take over now, yeh've done yer bit."
"I'll be back at dawn," Filch says. "For what's left of them."
He walks away cackling, the lamp bobbing away in the distance.
"I'm not going into the forest," Malfoy says, folding his arms.
"Yeh are if yeh want ter stay at Hogwarts."
Malfoy whimpers.
"But this is servant stuff, it's not for students to do. I thought we'd be writing lines or something-"
"Writin' lines? What good'll that do? Yeh'll do summat useful or yeh'll get out-"
"Wait 'till my father hears about this-" Malfoy mumbles.
"He'll tell yeh, that that's how it is at Hogwarts. If yeh father wish yeh were expelled, then go back to the castle an' pack yeh bags, go on!"
Malfoy doesn't move. He looks furious. Ohh, if looks could kill, Hagrid would be dead now...
"Righ' then," Hagrid says. "Now listen carefully, 'cause its dangerous what we're gonna do ternight, I don' want no one takin' risks. Follow me."
We follow Hagrid over to a hole with a silvery substance. Is that-
"Unicorn blood. See that? That silvery stuff? We're going to find out what happened to it, ones bin hurt bad by summat."
"What if the thing that hurt the unicorn finds us first?" Malfoy asks.
"Nothin' in the forest will hurt yeh if yeh with me or Fang," Hagrid reassures us. "Now yeh stick ter the path. We're going ter split inter two parties, and follow the trail if blood."
"I want Fang," Malfoy says quickly.
"All righ', but he's a right coward," Hagrid says. "So me, Hermione, Harry an' Amy will go one way and Draco, Neville and Sarah'll go the other."
I groan. I have to go with Malfoy.
"Now, if we find the poor thing, we'll send up green sparks."
We practice the green sparks.
"An' if any of yeh've get inter trouble, we'll send up red sparks."
We practice the red sparks too.
"So if yeh send up red sparks, we'll come and get yeh's. be careful-let's go."
The two parties split.
We walk in silence along the path, seeing spots of blood everywhere.
"This is servant stuff-" Malfoy says.
"Well, you deserve it," I retort.
Neville's whimpering. I don't want to sound mean but he is a coward. I don't know how he was sorted into Gryffindor.
Malfoy's quiet for a moment.
"Do you really think a werewolf could be killing the unicorns?" He asks me nervously.
"No," I say. "I read that they're really fast, a werewolf wouldn't be able to catch it. It wouldn't be easy catching a unicorn. I wonder what hurt it."
I hear movement.
I stop dead. So do Malfoy and Neville.
"Did you hear that-"
"Shh!"
I raise my wand.
A head pokes through the trees. Followed by a body of a horse.
A centaur!
He has short black hair, black beard and a Brumby body.
"Hello," the centaur says. "Who are you? Normally students don't come to the forest."
"Oh, erm, yeah, um, hi," I say. "We are students, um, I'm Sarah Potter, that's Neville Longbottom," I point at the whimpering Neville. "And that's Draco Malfoy."
"Nice to meet you, Sarah Potter. Why have you wandered into the forest with your friends?"
"First of all, Malfoy is not my friend, but we're on detention and we have to find a hurt unicorn. But can I know your name?" I say.
"Yes, my name is Cain."
"Hello Cain. Have you noticed anything? I mean, have you noticed anything out of the ordinary?" I ask.
"Mars is bright tonight," Cain says.
"Oh, cool, um, have you seen the unicorn?"
"No, I have not. You must get on. Goodbye, Sarah Potter."
He rides of into the forest.
Hm.
That was interesting.
I hear Neville scream and send up red sparks.
I whip around.
Malfoy scared him.
"Malfoy, you prat, why did you have to scare Neville?"
Malfoy smirks. "Because it was funny," he sneers.
"If I recall, you were scared as hell before we came in here!" I spit.
He backs down.
Ha.
Hagrid comes.
"Wha' happened?" He asks, freaking out.
"It was Malfoy, Hagrid. He scared Neville and Neville freaked and sent up the sparks."
"Alrigh', follow me."
We follow Hagrid on the path the Harry, Hermione and Amy.
"We're changin' parties. Neville yeh'll come with me, Hermione and Amy, Harry, sorry, but yer goin' with Malfoy. At least yeh got yeh sister."
We split again into the new parties.
We walk for at least half and hour in silence, into the heart if the forest.
Finally I see it. The unicorn. It's silver in the distance
"There!" Harry says, pointing at the bright unicorn.
We go closer.
It's dead.
I feel a tear run down my cheek. I love unicorns.
It's legs are sticking out at odd angles, and there is blood all over it.
We edge closer.
There is suddenly a slithering sound.
We back away quickly.
Out of the shadows comes a hooded figure, it strides over to the unicorn, it lowers it's head over one of the wounds and starts to drink.
I scream. As does Malfoy, but he cowers and runs away with Fang.
The hooded figure raises its head and looks at me and Harry.
There is a searing pain in my wrist. It has to be Voldemort and Quirrell! But there aren't two figures...
I back away even more quickly, I don't speak, I want to tell Harry to move away.
Harry falls to his knees, the pain searing in our scars.
I also fall to my knees holding my wrist, screaming.
After a few minutes, I look up.
Voldemort and Quirrell are gone. Now there are two cetaurs in front of us.
Cain and another one that I don't know.
The other centaur has white-blond hair and a palomino body.
"Are you alright, Sarah Potter?" Cain asks.
"Yes-thanks." I say, getting to my feet
The other centaur pulls Harry to his feet.
"Thanks-I'm Harry Potter-What was that?" He asks.
I want to tell him, I really do, but I don't know how. 'Oh, Harry, that was Professor Quirrell and Voldemort', oh yeah, he'd definitely believe that. Not.
"Sarah Potter, you may ride on my back," Cain says.
Harry gets into the other centaurs back.
"What's your name?" I ask the other centaur, while walking, well riding back.
"My name is Firenze," He says.
There is suddenly more hooves galloping our way.
"Firenze! Cain!" Another centaur says, with one behind him.
One has red hair and beard, with a chestnut body. The other has black hair and a black body.
"Yes Bane?" Cain says to the one with the black hair and body.
"What are you two doing? You have humans on your backs! Have you no shame at all? Are you common mules?"
"Do you know who they are?" Cain says. "They are Sarah Potter and the other one is Harry Potter. The quicker they leave the forest the better."
"What have you told them?" Growls Bane. "Remember, Cain, Firenze, we are sworn not to set ourselves against the heavens. Have we not read what is to come in the movements of the planets?"
"Sorry to interrupt," I say. "But, who's this?" I ask, pointing to the other centaur, next to Bane.
"Ronan, and I'm sure Firenze and Cain were just acting for the best," He says.
I like Ronan. I also like Cain and Firenze. Just not Bane.
Bane stomps his hooves in anger.
"For the best! What is that to do with us? It is not our business to run around like donkeys after stray humans in our forest!"
"Do you not see that unicorn?" Firenze bellows, "Do you not understand why that unicorn was killed? Or have the planets not let you in on that secret? We helped these two as though they are equals!"
Firenze rides off, Cain and I follow.
Harry and Firenze are just talking.
Cain and I are silent.
I go over what happened tonight.
Quirrell and Voldemort, the unicorn, Bane and Ronan, Cain and Firenze, almost dying.
I suddenly hear, "Harry! Sarah! Are you okay?" Hermione and Amy are running over, Hagrid, Neville and Malfoy at their heels.
"Yeah, we're fine," I say.
"The unicorns back there in the clearing, it's dead," Harry adds.
"This is where I leave you," Cain says to me. "You are safe now."
I get off Cain's back.
"So long, Sarah Potter," He runs off back into the forest.
It's finally dawn and we go back to the castle.
We get back and Harry immediately goes over to Ron, who is asleep on the couch.
I am so tired. So, I don't give another thought as I go back up to the dormitory and go to sleep where I can hear Bonnie's snores next to my comfy, four-poster bed.
A/N
So guys. Here is the next chapter. I was going to upload yesterday but I didn't have time.
This version if the chapter is so much different compared to my original copy. In my original copy, Sarah didn't even go into the forest so...yeah.
Happy Easter!
Bai.
