Ch18. The Norwegian Ridgeback

*Edited*

Harry, Ron, Hermione, Bonnie and Amy still believe that it's Snape, trying to steal the Stone.

Every time they'd walk past Quirrell, they'd smile; they would also tell people off for laughing at his stutter; and every time we'd walk past the third floor, they'd listen at the door to see if Fluffy is still in there, growling.

I've decided to start studying for the exams and some useful spells and information to use against Quirrell, when the time comes.

Hermione is thinking along the same lines as me; studying for the exams.

She's started drawing up revision timetables and colour-coding her notes; as am I.

During every class, even Potions, you'll find me in the front row, hanging onto every teaches words and copying notes, except for Quirrells'.

I am also spending all of my free time in the library, studying. Although the teachers have been piling us with homework, so I don't have much time to study, though I find my ways.

Hermione has been helping Harry, Ron, Bonnie and Amy to study. It gets a bit annoying really. Because 1: she is always talking. Teaching them, well revising, wand movements and other stuff; And 2: they are always telling me that I'm working way too hard, and reminding me that what I'm reading isn't even what we're actually learning.

I know.

One day in the library, Hagrid comes in.

"Hey Hagrid," I say, looking up from my book.

"Hullo Sarah, Harry, Ron, Hermione, Bonnie, Amy. How are yeh's?" He says, hiding something behind his back.

"We're fine," I say. "What are you doing here?"

"Jus' lookin'," he says. "What are you lot up ter?" He looks at us suspiciously. "Yer not still lookin' up Nicholas Flamel are yeh?"

"Oh, we found out who he is ages ago," Ron says impressively. "And we know what that dog's guarding; it a Philosophers St-"

"Sshh!" Hagrid says, looking around anxiously. "Don' go shoutin' it about. What's the matter with yeh?"

"There are a few thing we want to ask you actually," Harry says.

I sigh and go back to reading my book; 'Self-Defensive Spellwork'.

"What else is guarding the stone, other than Fluffy-"

I snap up.

"Sshh!!" Hagrid says again. "Listen-come an' see me later, I'm not promisin' I'll tell yeh anythin', mind, but don' go on about it in here-"

"See you later then," Harry says.

Once Hagrid leaves, I go back to reading.

A few minutes later I hear-

"Dragons!"

I snap up again.

Ron is standing with books in his hands.

"See look at these: 'Dragon Species of Great Britain and Ireland'; 'From Egg to Inferno'; 'A Dragon Keepers Guide'."

What?

"Hagrid's always wanted a dragon, he told me so first time I met him."

I catch on, Hagrid wants to breed a dragon.

"But it's against the law," I say. "Dragon breeding was out lawed by the Warlocks Convention of 1709, everyone knows that."

"I wonder what Hagrid's up to then?"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An hour later, I find myself with Harry, Ron, Hermione, Bonnie and Amy, sitting in Hagrid's hut.
It's extremely hot inside.
In Hagrid's fire I see a large, black egg.
A dragon?
"So," Hagrid says. "Yeh wanted ter ask me somethin'?"
"Yes," Harry says. "We want to know what else is guarding the Stone, other than Fluffy."
Hagrid frowns.
"I can'," he says. "One: I dunno meself; two: yeh know too much already. Even I did know I wouldn' tell yeh."
"Oh, come on Hagrid, I know you don't want to tell us, but you do know, you know everything," I say.
"Well," Hermione says. "We only want to know who had done the guarding."
We all smile at Hermione at these words.
"I s'pose it couldn' hurt ter tell yeh tha'...let's see...he borrowed Fluffy from me...some of the teachers did some enchantments...Professor Sprout-Professor Flitwick-Professor McGonagall-Professor Quirrell-an' Professor Dumbledore himself. Oh yeah, and Professor Snape."
"Snape?" Ron asks.
Well I was going to say 'Quirrell?' But you know...
"Yeah-yer not still on abou' that, are yeh? Look, Professor Snape's protectin' the Stone, he's not abou' ter steal it."
"Hagrid! Where'd you get that?" Ron says, pointing at the egg in the fire.
"Ah," Hagrid says. "Ah-from-from-I won it. Las' night, in a game o' cards with a stranger at the pub."
"What are you going to do once it's hatched?" Bonnie asks.
"Well, I've bin doin' dome readin'-"
I sigh. I get out 'Counter Curses for Beginners' that I borrowed from the library and I start reading.
We spend the rest of the afternoon at Hagrid's.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

One morning at breakfast, Hedwig, Harry's owl comes with a note from Hagrid.

It only has two words: 'It's hatching'.

"Let's skip Herbology and go do-" Ron starts.

"No!" Hermione interrupts. "We can't. We have exams. Plus we'll get into trouble."

"Hermione, how often do you see a dragon hatching?"

"Like I said, we'll get into trouble, and that's nothing compared to what Hagrid'll be in when someone finds out what he's doing-"

"Shut up!" Harry warns.

Draco Malfoy is standing a few feet away, listening in.

"We'll go at break," I whisper to them.

Herbology went forever. Finally the bell for break goes.

We all race down to Hagrid's as fast as we can.

"It's nearly out!" Hagrid says excitedly.

We quickly go inside.

The black egg is lying on the table-with deep cracks in it.

We all pull our chairs up to the table to watch.

There is a scratching noise and the egg splits open. The baby dragon flops out onto the table.

It has spiny wings-which are huge compared to its skinny black body-it has a large snout with wide nostrils, the stubs of horns and bulging, orange eyes.

It is certainly not pretty.

"Isn' he beautiful?" Hagrid murmurs. He reaches out a hand to stroke the dragon's head. It snaps at his fingers, showing pointed fangs.

"Bless him, look, he knows his mummy," Hagrid says.

"Hagrid," Amy says. "How fast do Norwegian Ridgebacks grow, exactly?"

Hagrid is about to answer when I see the colour drain from his face as he leaps up to the window.

"What's the matter, Hagrid?"

"Someone was lookin' through the gap in the curtains. It's a kid-he's runnin' back up ter the school."

I quickly go over to the window and look out.

There is no mistaking that platinum-blonde hair.

Malfoy has seen the dragon.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While Harry, Ron, Hermione, Bonnie and Amy were down at Hagrid's, I've been in the library, studying.
As I am writing down notes on Devils Snare, Harry, Ron, Hermione, Bonnie and Amy come in.
"You're still studying?" Bonnie says.
I don't say anything.
"We finally convinced Hagrid to let Norbert go," Harry says.
"Norbert?" I ask. "Who's Norbert? The dragon?"
They nod.
"Seriously? He named the dragon?" I say.
He's lost his marbles.
"Yes. We sent Ron's brother Charlie a letter asking whether we could send Norbert to Romania," Amy says.
Good.
Finally we can get rid of the dragon.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

On Wednesday night, Harry, Hermione, Amy and I are sitting by the fire waiting for Ron and Bonnie.

They've just gone down to Hagrid's to help feed Norbert.

I've got Snow sitting in my lap and I'm reading, again.

Finally at midnight, the portrait opens and Ron and Bonnie come through.

"It bit me!" Ron says holding out his hand which is covered in a bloody handkerchief, "I'm not going to be able to hold a quill for a week. I tell you, that dragon is the most horrible animal I've ever met, by the way Hagrid goes on about it, you'd think it was a fluffy bunny rabbit. When it bit me, he told me off for scaring it."

"Yeah, and when we left, Hagrid started singing it a lullaby," Bonnie adds.

Woah. I hope Charlie's letter comes soon.

At that precise moment, there's a tap on the window.

"It's Hedwig!" Harry exclaims. "She'll have Charlie's answer!"

I laugh to myself, I must be able to predict the future

I look over Harry's shoulder and read the letter:

Dear Ron,

How are you? Thanks for the letter-I'd be glad to take the Norwegian Ridgeback, but it won't be easy getting him here. I think the best thing will be to send him over with some friends of mine who are visiting next week. Trouble is, they can't bee seen carrying an illegal dragon.
Could you get the Norwegian Ridgeback up to the tallest tower at midnight on Saturday? They can meet you there and take him away while it's still dark.
Send me an answer as soon as possible.

Love, Charlie

We look at each other.

We've got the invisibility cloak," Harry says. "It shouldn't be too hard-I think the cloak's big enough to cover, maybe, three of us and Norbert."

We all agree that Harry, Hermione and I will go.

Finally, we're getting rid of Norbert.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
By next morning, Ron's bitten hand has swollen to twice it's usual size.
He didn't know whether it was safe to go to Madam Pomfrey. Would she recognise a dragon bite?
By the afternoon he had no choice.
The cut had turned a nasty shade of green.
Maybe Norbert's fangs are poisonous?
At the end of the day, Harry, Hermione, Bonnie, Amy and I race up to the hospital.
Ron looks terrible.
"You look terrible," I say.
"Thanks," he says. "It's not just my hand," he lowers his voice. "Although it feels like it's going to fall off. Malfoy told Madam Pomfrey that he wanted to borrow one of my books so he could come and laugh at me. He kept threatening to tell her what really bit me."
We try to calm him down.
"It'll be all over at midnight on Saturday," Hermione says.
This doesn't soothe Ron at all. On the contrary, he sits bolt upright.
"Midnight on Saturday!" He says in a hoarse voice. "Oh no, I've just remembered-Charlie's letter was in that book Malfoy borrowed-he's going to know we're getting rid of Norbert."
I gasp.
This is bad.
Really bad.
Before we can say anything, Madam Pomfrey ushers us out telling us that Ron needs sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"It's too late to change the plan now," I tell Harry and Hermione. "We haven't got time to. Plus, Malfoy doesn't know about the cloak."

We go down to Hagrid's and tell him about the letter from Charlie.

Tears come to his eyes.

We watch as the baby dragon bangs its tail against the walls.

I can't wait until Saturday.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sadly the cloak won't be able to fit the three of us and Norbert, so I stay behind in the common room to study.
I do feel a bit sorry for Hagrid. He loves Norbert. But he has to go. It is illegal.
"Good luck," I say to Harry and Hermione as that leave the common room at eleven.
I do hope this works.
