Ch16. The Mirror of Erised

*Edited*

Christmas was a blast.

Christmas cheer was in the air days after Christmas Day.

One quiet afternoon, I find myself reading 'Quidditch Through the Ages' which I had borrowed from the library as I had left my copy at home, while eating chocolate frogs, sitting in front of the fire in the Gryffindor common room with Snow on my lap.

Once it had gotten late and everyone was in bed, I decided to go to bed as well.

Halfway up the stairs I bump into something. It isn't the wall, but nothing is there.

Harry's head appears, he is obviously wearing the invisibility cloak.

"Harry! What are you doing?" I whisper yell.

"Er-"

"Where are you going?" I ask.

"Er, well, I found this room the other night and it has a, er, mirror. I saw our parents in it!" He says.

What? Our parents?

"O-our parents?" I ask.

"Yeah. Come with me," He says pulling me under the cloak.

Harry and I walk and walk. I swear we're lost.

"Are you sure you know where your going?" I whisper.

"Yeah. I've been going every night since Christmas-"

"Three nights? No fair! You should have told me!" I say angrily.

It is my parents too!

"Sshh!"

We finally stop in front of a classroom.

"This is it," Harry whispers.

We go in.

It's an empty classroom. All along the walls, there are the desks pushed up and there is a magnificent mirror standing in the middle of the room.

I go and read the inscription carved around the top:
'Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi'.

What?

Aha! It's in mirror writing, duh! It actually reads:
'I show not your face but your hearts desire'.

I move closer to the mirror.

There are lots of people standing behind me.

I'm intrigued.

I look behind me.

No one.

Hm.

I look back at the mirror.

Standing right behind me is a woman. She has dark auburn hair, a slim build and emerald green eyes.

She looks just like me!

Next to her is a man. He is wearing glasses over chocolate brown eyes and has messy, jet-black hair.

He looks like Harry. But Harry has green eyes like-

"Mum?" I whisper. "Dad?"

They just look at me, smiling.

I look behind them to see other people who look like Harry and me.

I am looking at my real family. My parents, grandparents, great-grandparents...

I have an ache. My heart. Half joy, half sadness.

"Okay Sarah, my turn," Harry says.

"No! You've had three nights to yourself. This is my time," I say turning back to the mirror.

I see my father laugh.

I just stay there for who knows long, smiling. I have to go back to bed.

"I'll come back," I whisper to them. "Let's go Harry."

Hey! I didn't get a go!" He protests.

"Yeah, but you had three nights," I retort.

I look at the mirror again to see both my parents laughing.

I throw the cloak over Harry and I and we leave.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"What? Your parents?"
"Yeah."
"But aren't they dead?"
I've just finished telling Amy about the mirror.
"Yeah..." I say gloomily.
"Are you going back? Tonight?"
"Yup. Whether I need to steal the cloak or not."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Come on," I say. "Even I know where it is."

It turns out that I didn't need to steal the cloak. Damn, I was really hoping too...

It isn't just Harry and me either, we've got Amy and Ron too.

It's very squishy under the cloak with the four of us-we're just lucky that we don't have Hermione or Bonnie with us, or we'd have to do piggy-backs.

We finally reach the classroom with the mirror.

I run out from under the cloak. To the mirror.

Mum and Dad are smiling at me.

"See?" I whisper to Amy.

"I can't see anything."

"Look, look at them all...there are loads of them..."

"I can only see you."

"Come on, look in it properly, go on," I say as I move aside.

Amy moves in front of the mirror.

"Can you see them?" I ask.

I see a tear run down Amy's face.

"N-no," She sobs.

She touches the mirror.

"I-I haven't t-t-told you s-something," she says. "When I was e-eight, I was in a car c-crash with my parents, T-Tom and my sister," she sobs. "Mum, T-Tom and I survived. B-but," she sighs heavily. "D-Dad and Oliva didn't."

She breaks down and starts crying madly.

I rush over to her and hug her.

"I-I see them in this mirror."

"Oh, Amy," I say sympathetically, hugging her. "I know how it feels."

I do. As my I lost my 'Mum' when I was nine. I felt like I lost a part of who I was. As I did think the was my real mother.

She steps away from the mirror, me still holding her.

Ron takes the advantage to look in the mirror.

Git.

He stands transfixed.

I let go of Amy and she sits down, silently crying.

"What do you see?" Harry asks, "do you see your family?"

"No-I'm alone-only I'm different-I look older-and-I'm Head Boy!"

What?" I scoff.

"I am-I'm wearing the badge like Bill used to-and I'm holding the house cup and the Quidditch cup-Bloody Hell! I'm Quiditch captain too!"

I start laughing. Hard.

"Do you think this mirror shows the future?" Ron asks.

Now I'm on all fours. I can't stop myself.

Ron glares at me.

"How can it? All my family are dead-let me have another look-" Harry says.

"You had it all those nights, give me more time-" Ron says.

"You're only holding the Quidditch cup, what interesting about that? I want to see me parents-"

"Don't push me-"

A sudden noise ends their discussion.

We quickly throw the cloak over ourselves.

Mrs Norris comes around the door. As she mustn't have seen anything, she turns and leaves.

"Let's go," I whisper. "This isn't safe."

We leave.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All the next day, Harry is quiet.
Ron, Amy and I keep trying to get him to get him to do something like chess or see Hagrid.
"Harry," Ron says. "I know what your thinking about. Don't go back tonight."
"No!" I say quickly. "We're going back."
"Why not?" Harry asks, ignoring my comment.
Git.
"I dunno. I have a bad feeling about it. Snape, Filch and Mrs Norris are wondering around. What if you get caught?"
We don't say anything.
I'm going back. Whether Ron likes it or not.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Once again I am standing in front of the mirror looking at Mum and Dad.

Harry and I take in in turns looking in the mirror.

Nothing is going to stop us, except-

"So-back again are we-Harry, Sarah."

I jump.

Oh no! Professor Dumbledore!

"Hey! Why does Harry go first!" I say angrily. "Sorry."

Dumbledore chuckles.

"Strange how short-sighted being invisible can make you," Professor Dumbledore says. "So, you, like hundreds before you, have found the mirror of Erised."

"I didn't know it was called that, sir," Harry says.

"But I expect you realise what it does?"

"Yes."

"No."

"It shows us what we truly desire," I say.

"Yes, that is correct. As it shows you both your parents, your friend Amy her father and sister and your friend Ron himself as Head Boy." Professor Dumbledore says.

"How do you know-"

"I do not need a cloak to become invisible," Professor Dumbledore says gently. "Now, the mirror will be moved to a new home tomorrow, and I ask you not to go looking for it again. Now, why don't you put that cloak back on and go to bed?"

"Sir, are we going to be punished? As we are out of bed after hours," I ask.

"No, Miss Potter."

"Sir, can I ask you something?" Harry says.

"Obviously you've done so, but you may ask me one more thing, however."

"What do you see when you look in the mirror?" He asks.

Damn it Harry! You don't ask the Headmaster that! Jeez.

"I? I see myself holing a pair of thick woollen socks."

I can tell that isn't what he actually sees.

Harry and I pull the cloak back on and head back to Gryffindor tower.

A/N

Because I am in an especially kind mood I am giving you guys two chapters one day!

So what do you guys think? I actually cried when I was writing what Amy saw in the mirror. I didn't intend on her having something so hurtful to her but it just flowed out of me while writing.

And I would really appreciate it if you guys would, maybe, comment, vote or follow me?

Thanks,

Bai :)
