Chapter 11

(Sarah's POV)

Why do I hear gunshots? At first, I think it is a bad dream. Another one of my simply fantastic nightmares! But suddenly, Bucky barges into my 'room' without knocking first.

Yep, definitely real gunshots.

There are bullet-sized holes in the ceiling. I know what they want, but I'm not just about to hand anything over. I have to get us out of here.

"What do we do?" he asked. Woah! He's letting me choose? It makes me uncomfortable, since the last time I chose, it didn't work out in anyone's favor. This time would be different.

"Front door, grab anything you need to spend the rest of your life with" I shout, in a rush of words before running around the apartment to gather my stuff. My dad had taught me drills about where to go in an emergency, what to do. This isn't a fire, and I can't see the people shooting at us, so I didn't have any shot at hitting them. Bucky grabs a backpack that had been resting at the end of his bed. Nice. He was prepacked. Like he knew something similar to this could happen at any moment. I shove the few things I want into my backpack, along with my computer and notebooks. All of anything I ever had was in those, I can't just leave it all behind. That's when I realize I am still wearing the suit my father had made for me, which reminds me to pack a change of clothes.

We run for the front door. My plan is to sneak out down the staircase, since they appear to be on the roof, above us. But that is before I see the armed soldiers running up the stairs. For once in my life, I am glad this building has no elevator. Horrible for bringing up grocery's and if you are on the top level like us.

If you are normally chased around and hunted by people with guns, this is definitely the place for you!

Plan B, we have to go to the open balcony. Only a few levels down. This was going to get ugly.

(Bucky's POV)

Well, this is just great! All these guys running up the stairs, and we're just charging straight for them! It's times like these that I doubt Sarah knows what she is doing. Then I remember her little show with the balcony. Building hopping. We're heading there, aren't we? A sick feeling starts in my stomach and gradually spreads into nausea, taking hold of my entire body. Why do I hate heights? I try my best to forget how many stories up I am. No such luck. Sure enough, we make it to the balcony. The roof of the next building seems so far away! How had she managed to jump so far? More importantly, how would I?

"On three, okay?" she asks. We're out of options. This is the only way. I peek over the edge of the building and almost pass out.

"Are you kidding me, we'll die!" I shout. She then takes my hand, softly, reassuring.

"Trust me, you can do it.'' And so, the countdown begins. The soldiers are behind us, their guns are up, eyes locked onto us.

"Freeze!" they yell. Sarah seems to go still, so I follow suit. Then I notice her free hand grab the handrail. I do the same, mirroring her every move until even our breaths are synchronized. Suddenly, she steps back, I quickly follow her lead. The men grow tense, their guns shaking in their hands.

"Stop moving, we will shoot!" they yell. She squeezes my hand tightly as if to reassure me that we could make it.

"Three" she whispers. We take off in a run, vaulting over the railing. I hear gunshots behind us, but neither of us bothers to look back. Not at first. Suddenly, in midair, Sarah turns, her hand disconnects from mine. She nicks an arrow in her bow. I had nearly forgotten she was still in the suit! Then, she fires, a single arrow. I know it will miss. She knows it too. Sarah has a different intention. It sticks into the wall behind them. A few milliseconds later, the arrow explodes, hurtling them all over the edge. They wouldn't make it to the roof, and would soon learn what it felt like to fall over 19 stories.

We hit the roof hard, and I roll a little bit. She cringes when she stands up, but she knows there is no time for pain. We are on the move. We began to run to where the ledges were, the next step. Suddenly, I felt something hit me, squarely in the back. It was like a burning sensation, spreading until I feel it in my shoulders, until I can't feel my legs. I can barely hear myself scream, it was like I was underwater. People were suddenly on the roof with us, and I recognized one of them. Sarah screamed as well. People began to rush her. I tried to push myself up to help her, but someone pushed me down, then flipped me over on my back. Someone had broken Sarah's bow, so she was currently fighting everyone off with a knife. Then, a man looked at me. "Mr. Barnes," he says, his voice smooth and sweet. Like honey. I remember him from somewhere. He is a doctor.

My doctor. His face is all I see before the world turns black. I can't do anything. I hope Sarah would be alright, I hope she wouldn't try to save me. I hope she would make it out.

I hope I was wrong about where this was going.
