The Torment

"I promise to be okay. Really..." I said. "But you have to give me a word; you will not utter anything to Sid. I don't want to see him till I get back."

He nodded grimly and took a step back, and turned around his car parked temporarily outside the airport gate. The police officer was already on the way of the car to clear it up from the driveway to avoid a possible jam.

I waved and went inside the airport, mechanically completed the procedure and tried not to think about Sid. But as the clock ticked, signalling the arrival of the flight, my thoughts went to the morning when he left in his car. He had been worried. Well, he should be. He lied repeatedly. I didn't know what else he was hiding.

One thing was certain, he must feel something towards me. His eyes, they spoke the truth. There was a worry in them. He must have thought of this, me finding the truth. Was he going to say the same thing to me in the morning? Or just another lie to cover the earlier one?

I still didn't know how he knew Rishi, and if that was his house in which we first kissed. He seemed rich, as he had the friends who owned choppers and expensive cars. God! I fumed over again. I did not know anything about him. Only that he knew my parents, and was talking to them all along. Why would he come to India? Was I the only reason?

Probably not! I couldn't be that important. I thought of calling my parents, and confront them. Then again, I would end up messed up even more. It was better to shrug off the feelings Sid had stirred inside of me and then I would be able to face with their version of the story. Was it possible not to love Sid? Not to see him again? A sharp pain in my heart answered my question. I would be miserable without him.

I hugged myself as I settled on the left front side of the plane. I already missed the bugger. I missed his arms around me, his scent, and his warmth. Touching my lips with the tips of my fingers, I remembered the kiss. How was I to deal with the parting? A week seemed a long time to be away from him. He would not be able to find me. Unless, I call and tell him. Finding the thought repelling, I slapped my subconscious to see the clouds that were spread out, as the plane pierced through the blanket of the clouds to reach above it.

When I finally landed in Calicut, it was dark. I hired a prepaid cab and headed towards my destination, which was eighty kilometres to the north of the southern city. It took a minute to understand the navigation on my phone, which was winding state highway that led to the Janaki forest. I again switched off my cell phone and looked away through the window. I let myself loose and keep my thoughts aside and began to appreciate the boulevard of coconut trees that stood proudly on both sides of the road. The vast planes soon lead to elevated mounds of hills.

Soon, through pitch darkness, I arrived at the Vega resort, which was situated in the middle of the forest, in a slight hilltop. I could hear the chirping of insects, and tinkling sound of water flowing nearby. I made my way to the reception, which was only a wooden desk, with two heavy moustached men, sitting idly. When they saw me approaching, they stood up abruptly and started talking to me in Malayalam.

I smiled uncomfortably and told them my name and that I had made the reservation in the morning.

"Oh, yes. Miss Aananda..?" The grumpy looking man said. "Give us two minutta.. we prepare your rooma.."

A sudden insecurity gripped me. The resort didn't look this shabby in the pictures. I sighed and glanced around. Space was damp with an odd silence around. I gulped, thinking of Sid, and Kush. Before I could panic more, the grumpy man arrived and ushered me towards the narrow and dimly lit passageway. I dragged my bag and followed him, plucking up some courage.

When I entered a cottage, passing a couple of trees past the hut of the reception area, I breathed in relief. The door of the cottage was sturdy, with automatic latch and a manual kadi. The man placed my bag on the chest and gave a few instruction on the facility. Though there was TV, the place looked hospitable enough, with a large wooden bed, covered in beige white sheets and wooden flooring. When he finally left the room, I locked it, double checking. I changed and slumped on the bed in exhaustion.
