CHAPTER 3
Sapphire St. Clair's POV
The nerve of that guy! I thought angrily as I marched out of his office. How dare he do this to me? How dare he bring up the past? Being here I couldn't help to feel that my grandfather somehow slyly staged this encounter with my ex-husband.
I see that I need to have a word with Daniel about this. I have a certain feeling that he had this ridiculous notion in his head that he was forcing me to be in the company of that detestable bastard.
Now that I realized that coming here was a mistake. I should not have accepted this work even though it would have sealed my position in the St. Clair Diamonds if this new branch of our company succeeded abroad. Now I wasn't certain if I could continue to work here knowing full well that I was going under the nose of Loukas Spiridakou. I didn't like the idea of working where every move I made was known to him.
And these parting words a while ago, his words made me shiver down my spine. He claimed if he were to listen with the devil inside him, he would not let me leave this country ever again. Could he do that? I mean, technically if he was a normal person he couldn't keep a foreign woman in his country but we're talking about Loukas Spiridakou one of the most powerful and influential men in Greece. He could probably twist the law in his favor if he wants to.
I shivered again, pushing back the unwanted thoughts out of my head. As far as I was concerned there was nothing that binds us together anymore. We were back to being strangers to one another. Heck, people in Greece have probably forgotten that I was once married to this guy. I was sure that he was just messing with me a while ago.
He didn't mean those words. I reassured myself silently. All I needed to do was to avoid his company during my stay here.
My mobile phone was in my handbag. I fished it out with scowls on my face as I rode the elevator going to the St. Clair store below. "Hello?" I said to the unknown caller ID.
"You forgot your copy of the contract." I heard his familiar voice on the other line.
I closed my eyes, stopping myself from cursing out loud. This guy was testing my patience. "H-How did you get my number?"
"Is that a serious question, Sapphire?"
I took several steady breaths. Of course not, there's nothing he wants that he couldn't get. He had told me that when we were just dating how can I forget that? "What do you want?"
"I told you, you forgot your copy of our contract in my office." He said in his deep voice that made me quiver. My mind couldn't help but remember that deep voice murmuring Greek endearments in my ears before we went to sleep in the past.
"I glared at my reflection on the elevator. I wasn't sure where the glare was directed—to me who was remembering my past with him when I promised myself I would forget those memories after our divorce—or to him who was being impossible and kept on annoying me since the night of the charity ball. "Don't tell me that you are expecting me to come back to your office just to pick them up?"
"Yes."
"In your dreams!" I practically shouted the same moment the elevator reached the lobby. Several heads turned in my direction with questioning looks. I could feel the heat that spread through my cheeks as I fastened my walk towards the St. Clair Diamonds. "Just tell your secretary to bring them to our store."
I heard him exhale deeply. "She's busy as of the moment. She needs to finish finalizing our other contracts, that's why."
Shocked registered in my face. He was impossible. I still don't know why I am still talking to him. "Then just ask one of your employees, for goodness' sake! You are a brilliant person, right? Then figure out how would those papers be in my office within this day."
"All right, I'll see what I can do."
"Thank you," I replied sarcastically before disconnecting the phone call rudely. I took a deep breath calming myself. Since I arrived here in Greece my emotions have been a mess. I've never been like this before where was the cool and efficient general manager of the St. Clair Diamonds? It feels like I was the same twenty-three-year-old insecure young wife of that man I thought I had come a long way since then.
Being here again made me recall what I'd rather forget in my lifetime. Those bittersweet memories of falling in love and falling out of love made my heartache.
I hardened my heart, blocking all emotions inside me. I was not the same woman back then. I was not the woman who desired her husband's attention. That woman no longer existed the new Sapphire St. Clair is smart, strong and certainly doesn't need a man in her life.
I finally arrived at the newly opened St. Clair Diamonds branch here in Greece the first of its outlets outside America. If this store wasn't just located inside this hotel I would be very proud and happy to work here but...
My gloomy thoughts were replaced by awe once I entered the showroom everything was splendid inside. From the crystal chandelier in the middle of the room to the lights illuminating the place making the jewelry display on the glass counters glint.
"Kaliméra, Miss St. Clair." The uniformed woman greeted me with a smile. "Welcome to St. Clair Diamonds. My name is Agnes."
"Thank you," I replied merrily, still looking around the place. This outlet could rival the interior of the flagship branch in Manhattan.
"I'm sure you want to see your office, ma'am. This way please." She led me to the small hallway where there were private lounges for wealthy and VIP customers who could view what our jewelry store had to offer.
At the far end of the hallway was my office located. It was a simple, modern, and neat small office. It doesn't matter how small or big your office said my grandfather once when we were chatting. The real goal was to do your job and put your one hundred one percent in everything you do that's the only way you can succeed.
"If you need anything please don't hesitate to call me, ma'am." I heard Agnes in the doorway.
I turned around and smiled. "Yes, thank you."
The woman beamed and nodded before leaving me alone here. I removed my jacket and tossed it on the chair behind the glass table. I looked around the place then my gaze landed on the pile of papers stacked neatly on the side of the table.
I took the documents as I sat on my chair. So this was the paperwork that was waiting for me. Taking this opportunity to push aside the unwanted thoughts inside my head about my encounter with my ex-husband...
Exactly, half an hour later my peaceful silence was interrupted when Agnes barged into my office with wide eyes. "Excuse me, Miss St. Clair. Someone wants to see you right now."
I frowned at her, dragging my eyes away from the documents. "Who is it?"
"I am." He answered, making his way inside my office uninvited. My eyes widened at the sight of him. Jesus, him again?
"The CEO of Artemis Hotel," Agnes murmured finally, silently closing the door behind her leaving me alone with this Greek bastard.
I threw a dark look in his direction once we were finally alone in my office. "What are you doing here? I thought I made it clear a while ago I don't wish to see you again?"
He smiled thinly, moving further across the small space. "I can't find a person who can bring this contract here so I decided to deliver personally here. I thought you would appreciate the gesture, Sapphire."
"Are you being serious?" I asked in disbelief.
"Yeah."
I took a deep breath, staring blankly at him. "I'm sure you have a million things to do in your office so I won't keep you here. Thank you for bringing them here you can leave now, sir."
"On the contrary, I am not busy at the moment so I decided to stay for a moment and examine your store." He announced taking the chair across my table without waiting for me to invite him to sit.
"I don't believe you."
He beamed at me, staring deep into my eyes. I could feel that his stare could spear deep inside my soul. "I believe you once said like my attention all to yourself, Sapphire."
I glowered in his direction darkly. I don't understand why he kept on bringing up the past. Does he like to torture me over and over again? "That was before." I hissed angrily. "When we're still married but not anymore."
Something stirred in his eyes that I couldn't explain. "I think deep inside you we both know that you still like my attention."
I threw him an acid glare. "Don't think highly of yourself. That young naïve woman who craved your attention before no longer existed. The woman in front of you now needs no one in her life to be happy."
"Are you happy, Sapphire?" He surprised me with his unexpected question, his eyes never leave mine.
Suddenly, I felt my mouth went dry. I swallowed hard, trying to remain stoic while staring at his Greek god face. He was still the same as the first time I laid my eyes on him. The same drop-dead-gorgeous man who commanded attention wherever he went because of his looks with his tousled jet-black hair, piercing green eyes, straight nose, and stubble jaw. "Yes, I am happy now," I answered forcing myself to focus on our topic, not on his looks.
"That's good to know." He said, his eyes now concealed by the long lashes of his eyes. I could not see a hint of emotion in him. "You have grown so well since our divorce."
"Why do you keep bringing up the past?" I asked him exasperatingly. "Why do you keep opening old wounds? Can't we just let things stay in the past where it belongs? I don't wish to talk about it."
"Why?" He countered, his eyes filled with hidden emotion in their depth. "You still owe me an explanation why you suddenly want out of our marriage."
"I told you..."
He astounded me when he suddenly stood from his chair. "Stop saying those crap that you feel neglected during our marriage I knew there's more to it. Why don't let it have it on the open now, Sapphire? What drove you to leave me two years ago?"
Pain crept into my chest as I looked away from his intense gaze. I muttered softly. "There's nothing more and I don't wish to talk about our disastrous marriage, Loukas. If you keep on pressing this issue I think it's better if you leave now."
He unexpectedly drew forward in my direction, his hands flattened on each side of my glass table while his face was a few inches away from mine. I couldn't move back since I was trapped in my chair. "Don't you think you owe me an explanation, agapiméni?"
"No, I don't," I answered, hardening my heart and staring at his eyes unflinching.
"One way or the other I will uncover the truth." He warned dangerously, his eyes holding hellfire in their profundity. "I will not let you leave Greece until I find out what the hell went wrong with our marriage, my love."
I gasped wordlessly. If I just move even so slightly my lips would touch his. I bit my lower lips, he was making me shiver not for fear but something else entirely. "What will you do if you find anything?"
"If I found out someone put lies in your head then I won't hesitate to kill anyone who ruined our marriage."
"Loukas..."
"You know me, Sapphire." He said, running his gaze to my lips with sensual desire. "I will not rest until I learn the truth." He was about to kiss me then he stopped himself. "No. The next time I kiss your lovely lips, my endearing ex-wife. I will not let you out of my arms again. That's a promise."
Without another word, he left me alone in my office with a racing heart and I found myself to be in a more dangerous position just hours after I arrived in Greece. I stupidly thought that he finally got over our divorce that was why he stayed silent all these years. It never occurred to me that he was just waiting for his time to pounce.
I reverently hope that I will have the strength to stop him from digging into the past. Because I knew very well how persuasive he could be when he wants something and how extensive his influence on me in the past his parting words a while ago made me shudder.
