CHAPTER 18
Sapphire St. Clair's POV
"I'm ready," I said coming out of the bedroom when I saw him sitting in the living room waiting for me he was already dressed for the party.
"Finally." He said with satisfaction, standing from the sofa he approached me with an appreciative gaze. "I thought I would have to wait another hour before you're done preparing for the party." He raked his gaze on me from head to toe. "I must say that it's worth the wait. You look ravishing, agapiméni."
I threw him a disapproving look. "I didn't take long to prepare!" I looked at my evening gown consciously. "I just don't know what to wear, that's all."
"As I said, it's worth the wait." He repeated, examining my form fully. "You look like a goddess who came down to earth to tempt the male species. I am sure men at the party will die of envy because you are mine, Sapphire."
I couldn't help the heat that rose on my cheeks. "What a sweet-tongue devil. No wonder women fell for your infamous charm."
"I don't want any other woman but you."
I pointedly didn't answer him instead I looked away and glanced at my wristwatch. "We better go or we'll be late for the party."
"Wait." He said, grabbing my arm when I was about to walk towards the door. I raised an eyebrow in his direction. "For a woman who is ironically a jewelry heiress you certainly unadorned for the party."
I frowned while staring at him. I don't understand what he was implying just now. "I told you before I am not fond of sparkling things."
There was a strange smile on his face that I couldn't fathom. "I think we can alter that." He fished out something in his trousers' pocket and presented the familiar rings. "I think they belong on your finger not in the dresser drawer."
For a moment I couldn't speak my eyes were just focused on the engagement and wedding rings in his palm. I never thought that I would ever see them again. "I—I..."
"I want you to wear them again, Sapphire." He said, his voice was thick with emotions. That's when I realized that he was nervous. "I want us to be official again."
"But we're divorced now, remember?" I reminded him sensibly. "I think wearing my wedding rings is out of the question. I don't think it would be proper to wear them again."
"We don't need a piece of paper saying that we're man and wife, my love. What is important is what we feel about each other. I want us to be officially divorced or not I want us to live as man and wife again."
I stared at him for a moment, my heart also wished just like that but deep inside I was scared—scared that we couldn't make it the second time around. "Loukas...I don't—"
"Please?" He pleaded, his eyes showing whatever emotion he had at the moment. That's when I realized that I was slowly losing my resolve due to his persistence. "I want to marry you again but I know you are not ready yet so I will wait until you find it in your heart to trust me again in taking good care of you."
My throat was lumped with emotions. I was beyond grateful to find this kind of man who never gave up on me despite my insecurities and who was still willing to fight for what we had. But do I dare to give it a try again? Marriage...?
"Sapphire?"
I was dragged out of my reverie. I saw him looking at me intently. "What do you say? Are you willing to find it in your heart to trust me again? I promise that I will win back your love for me just give me a chance to prove it to you."
What choice do I have when he says something like that? I took a deep breath as I reluctantly presented my left hand so he could slip the rings on my finger. "All right, I will wear them again."
The look on his face was like a man who just realized that he won the lottery. The smile on his face was the kind of expression that I would cherish in my heart until I die. He slipped the rings swiftly on my fourth finger. "You made me the happiest man on earth tonight. Thank you, my love."
My heart swelled with happiness when he gently kissed the hand where the wedding bands rested. "I think we need to go or we'll be late for the party. I don't want to attract so much attention after I come back to Greece."
"Then we'd better go, wife." He tucked my arm in his, as he led me in the doorway. "I couldn't wait to show off my beautiful date tonight."
"What a conceited Greek," I muttered as we rode the elevator.
Instead of feeling angry about my accusation Loukas just merely smiled at me. "I love you, Sapphire."
I smiled at him and didn't answer and just remained silent. Deep inside me, I knew what kind of answer I would give him but I wasn't ready yet. I looked at him when silence filled the elevator he didn't mind that I didn't answer him.
I just hope that I can find the courage to have faith again.
The car ride going to the party was uneventful except for the time that he would hold my hand briefly only to release it when he was about to change gear. My wedding rings glinted when they caught light I haven't realized until now that he was also wearing his wedding ring he must have worn it before he gave back my wedding bands.
"Relax." He said to the silent car ride.
"What?"
Loukas briefly glances at me before setting his gaze on the road again. "You are quiet. Are you nervous? Why don't you relax a bit?"
I looked at my car window and sighed deeply. "I'm fine."
He just held my hand and squeezed it tightly like it was some kind of assurance that everything would be fine. We remained silent until we arrived at the venue. He gave his key to the waiting valet and led me inside.
I was deeply aware of the curious glances the crowd threw in our direction as soon as we entered the hall. Whenever he went he was still the subject of female fantasy. Either he was used to the attention or he wasn't aware.
Loukas placed his hand securely on my waist as he drew me closer to his side. He was greeted immediately by a group of men who eagerly wanted to start a conversation with him. But to his credit, he made sure to include me in the talk.
I was starting to relax around here when I heard a female voice drawing Loukas name with such familiarity. "Loukas!"
I slightly raised my eyebrow when she made her way to my ex-husband's side with ease. The smile on her face was more than enough indication of her intention to the man in question. "Good to see you here, Yelena."
The woman's smile broadened on her face. "I thought you were not coming tonight! But I am glad that you made it."
She either wasn't aware of my presence yet or she was just ignoring the fact that I was even here standing beside them. But before I even made myself known Loukas drew me forward for this woman's full view. "Yelena, I don't believe you met Sapphire before."
"Oh, hello." She said with a lack of enthusiasm in her voice. She even barely spared me a glance when her sole attention was directed at my ex. "I see that you bring a date tonight. This is something new."
"I'm his ex-wife, actually," I informed her with a saccharine smile on my face.
"You are his ex-wife?" The shock on her face was priceless. It seems that she hadn't expected to meet Loukas' ex-wife tonight. She directed her gaze on Loukas. "I thought the people claim that she doesn't want to have anything to do with you that's why she left you."
"It's only a major misunderstanding on our part but that water is under the bridge now." He smiled down at me with love in his eyes. "I will do everything to win back my wife."
"Oh, is that so?"
"Yes," Loukas answered suavely, putting a secure hand on my waist.
"Well, if that's the case." The woman had said with an uninterested tone. "Congratulations may it work out this time." She slid her gaze on me for the first time. "Take care of Loukas because many women would do everything to be in your position right now."
I smiled prettily in her direction. "Thanks for the advice. I assure you they won't stand a chance."
Instead of answering she just merely walked away from us. I silently watched her as she made her way talking to another group of people at the center of the ballroom.
"What is that all about?" I asked my Loukas as soon as we were alone. "Don't tell me that she's one of your harems."
"Harem?" He repeated with a frown. "I don't know what you are talking about. Yelena is not like that."
"Oh yeah?" I raised an eyebrow in his direction, examining his face intently. "Then what's with the flirtatious welcome she gave you a while ago? She acted as if I was not standing next to you the whole time."
He made a face. "That's why I introduce you to her, remember? I believe she hasn't met you before. Besides, it's only that she has a girly crush on me in her teenage years."
"She's not interested in meeting me, believe me," I replied dryly. "Also, I know she isn't over yet for her liking you. Any person with eyes can see that she still has a thing for you."
Loukas stared at me for a moment, then a mirth smile fitted his handsome face. "Why? Don't tell me you are jealous about her, my love?"
I glowered at him darkly. "Of course not!" I made it sound so passionately that I intended that's why the smile on his face broadened. "I am not really..."
He shrugged casually, silently telling me that he didn't believe me not for a bit. "If you say so, darling."
I was about to retort and tell him firmly that I wasn't jealous of this girl but I stopped myself in time. There was no use when he was freaking happy about the whole situation. My eyes were arrested by the newcomer inside the party. A slow smile crossed my lips. "Well, if that's not Nikos Pallis and his lovely wife who just arrived."
The smirk in his face instantly vanished as he followed my gaze. "Not again."
"Maybe I should approach them, you know he is our most valued client here in Greece. Excuse me, will you?"
I was about to leave when he stopped me from my tracks. "Now see here, Sapphire. I will not let you approach that man again."
"Why not?"
He eyed me dangerously, that kind of dark look that would make an average person shrink with fear. "I believe that you are just going to approach him to make me jealous because of that Yelena incident. You do know that I don't like that guy."
"I don't know what you mean," I said coyly, shrugging off his death grip on my wrist. "Now you will excuse me for a moment."
He caught my arm again and this time he pulled me closer to the hardness of his body. "Don't you forget who is taking you home tonight? And whose bed you are going to sleep in."
"Loukas..."
His eyes held a silent warning making me both shiver and thrill at the same time. "Make me jealous with that man and I will give these people something they will truly gossip about for decades. Make your choice."
Oh my god, somebody helps me for walking up the slumbering beast inside him...
