Chapter Twenty-Eight
~Burdon~
I was sparring someone when the first wave hit me. I was so dizzy, so disoriented that I couldn't even see properly. I couldn't even tell if I was standing or not.
"Aeri? Are you okay?" inquired someone.
I tried to see-figure out-who was talking to me, but I couldn't see anything at all-it was like I gone blind.
"I'm going to take you to the healer's tent, okay?"
I felt hands grab me, picking me up, dragging me all the way to the healer's tent. I did hit my head a few times on what I think was tent poles, which was absolutely lovely. But... After a few minutes I think I'm laying down on a bed, but I couldn't be sure.
"What on earth happened to you?! Why are everyone from Pak Island disoriented?!" screamed someone-I think they're standing over me.
"I don't know," I said. The person who's standing(?) over me grunted. I was about to fall asleep when someone shook me awake.
"You can't fall asleep now, we need to know what's wrong with you!" yelled someone, urgently.
"Where's my father?" I questioned.
"Right next to you," said someone.
I turned my head to the right. "Father?"
"I'm right here, son," replied my Father.
"Why is this happening?!" I asked, in their native tongue.
"The only thing I can think is someone messed with our crystals," clarified my Father, in our native tongue-our native tongue is different than the rest of Anjustlia.
"How is messing with our crystals make us not see?" I asked in, of course, our native tongue.
"I would explain it to you. But I can't read what it saids about the crystals, if we have complication with them, or if someone messes with them. How well can you see?"
"I can only see colors and not shapes. All of the colors I see are all blended together, it makes no sense!" I complained, in native tongue.
"That's better than what I got. All I got is black, gray, and occasionally white," said my Father in native tongue.
"Is there anything I can help you with?" wondered someone else, it sounds like one of the healers.
"Yes, there's a scroll in my bag, can you get it out and read it to me, quietly?"
Whoever my Father told to do that for him, obviously, got it out and was trying to read it-it was in their native language. Eventually-it took her, forever-that person got to the bottom of the scroll. I heard my father asked that person to put it away, the person put it away-or I thinks that person put it away. I only know things by listening now that my eyesight is gone-or at least is just all wacky.
"What do we do now?" I mildly complained, in common tongue.
"Learn how to fight-and other things-while we're blind," suggested my Father.
I groaned, inwardly.
Weeks had passed before the healers let us go-they couldn't figure out the cause of our blindness. We all had to learn how to fight while we were blind. I had someone guide me back to my tent, I laid down on my bed, and fell asleep.
Of course when I opened my eyes I was back in the Dream. Luckily my blindness didn't extend to the Dream. Licá appeared before me, standing next to me.
"Licá?"
Licá turned towards me as if to say 'what?'
"How come I'm not blind here, but I'm blind back there?"
'I do not know.'
I grunted.
'Go for a swim?'
"Fine," I said. I jumped into the lake that was randomly right in front of us. Licá jumped in next.
If you know what happens when heavy objects slams into water, you'll figure out what happens next. A gigantic splash, and I mean gigantic-it looked like a tsunami was crashing down on us.
We played in the lake for a while.
We tried to see who could make the biggest splash-Licá's idea not mine. She, obviously, always won at that game. We played who can hold there breath the longest and the winner of that game is... (drumroll please) ... Licá, almost me-we did it for more than a half an hour. It was fun, but then I woke up.
My eyes were opened, but I couldn't see anything expect a bunch of random colors that make no sense. I was wearing a blindfold to keep me from trying to see. Whenever I opened my eyes the blindfold looked red, a little bit of orange, pink, and some white. I got up from my bed and walked to the training area.
I am fighting someone right now-I, obviously, can't see who it is. I slashed at someone's foot-or at least I think so-and then I heard a big thump. I stretched my hand out-where I heard the thump-to, obviously, help the person I fought up. I felt the person grab my hand and I pulled that person up. I started fighting that person again when I heard, "Aeri!"
I yelled, "Halt!" to, obviously, get the man I was fighting to stop. Apparently the man heard me and was stopped.
"Aeri!" yelled the voice again. I swirled around to where I heard the voice. "Aeri I'm so glad I found you." The voice who sounded a lot like Ava.
"Ava, is that you?"
"Yes, it's me."
"Why are you here?"
"I wanted to show you something." I felt someone grabbing my arm; it must be her.
"Ava, I don't know if you can tell, but I can't see anything," I teased.
"Fine, I'll look at it and you'll feel it," retorted Ava, pulling on my arm. I let her pull me along to whatever amazing thing Ava wants to show me.
We walked for a while until Ava made me stop.
"Hold out your hand," ordered Ava, once we were there. I held out my hands. She handed me something that felt like a rock. A second later blinding pain shot through my hands and up my arms, forcing me to drop the rock. It was like pain I never felt before and that's saying a lot.
"Aeri?! Are you alright?! What happened?!" I heard Ava demanded with what it sounded like she was very worried. I felt someone grabbing my hands, gently, it must be Ava. "Aeri?! What happened to your hands?!" I heard Ava asked, sounding frightened.
My hands hurt so much. They felt like they have been burned, which they probably had.
"Ava, I need you to get some cold water so I can calm down the burns," I said-well more of whispered.
Somehow, somewhere, Ava found some cold water. I put my hands in the cold water-obviously-and stayed there until my hands cooled down. Ava wrapped my hands in bandages-after she put some healing stuff on my hands. For such a burn I had to stay in the healer's tent for forever. I wouldn't be surprised that if I ever got to see again that I would see a sign that saids:
'For the dragonrider Aeri. You may only use it if he's not using it, or when you're completely full, and you need another bed.'
I wouldn't be surprised if I saw that-if I am able to see again, that is. Luckily, I'm making process in fighting while blind and using my ears to help me get around. Still not easy, but at least I'm getting better at it.
I am so bored.
When I got out of the healer's tent I could feel something, but I could barely could feel them-probably could see them-I could definitely feel it on my right palm.
It was like a scar, but it was swirly, it is weird, and I don't know how to describe it. It was definitely a weird mark to feel. I had helped walking through the busy campsites and straight to my tent. I had help directing towards my bed and immediately fell asleep.
I was back in the Dream when I opened my eyes. I saw King Jazer and someone else-I couldn't see who it was.
"Now how do I get them under my control?" asked Jazer, sounding impatient.
"Just give it another month then you'll be able to completely control them," replied someone who l thought I would never hear again.
"Why another month? Why couldn't it be now?"
"The more you wait, the more wolf-like they become and the more control over them you have," explained Tenter. I heard Jazer grunt.
Wow! When I thought he wouldn't get any lower he did. Never before have I seen anyone-maybe not including Jazer-sink this low and betray their country this badly, even thought Tenter wasn't really part of my country. Honestly, he sank so low that he actually might be competing with Jazer for, "The Worst Man Ever!" or maybe it was, "The Evil Man Who Betrayed You, Your Country, And Making Your Life Miserable!" or something like that award. Oh, I did not like that guy one bit! Even if he is my uncle-yes, sadly, he's my uncle-I still didn't like him, I thought.
"Now what do we do after a month or so?" inquired Jazer.
"I will tell you after another month is over," responded Tenter walking away. And the Dream faded away right there and I woke up.
I was tempted to open my eyes, but I knew it would do no good because I was blind and I wouldn't be able to see anyways. I was hungry. I heard someone come in. "Hello? Who's there?" I asked.
"It's just me, Aeri, I wanted to know if you wanted something to eat."
"That would be nice," I said, getting up. I felt Ava grabbing my arm. Ava led me to the mess room, where the food was. We waited in line for some food-it sounds like there is a lot of people this time. And judging by how fast-or slow rather, it feels like we stopped for now-it is going to take us a long way to get there.
Great. Just wonderful. My stomach growled in agreement. I swear that it was grumbling so much that it just might start eating the rest of the insides of me. How lovely. I always wanted to be eaten by my own stomach. That reminds me of one of my visions. I think it was about-
"Are you hungry?"
"Starving, actually, Ava."
"I'm sorry. I'm hungry too."
"How many people are ahead of us?"
I felt her hands let go of me. "I can't see the end."
I groaned as her hands grabbed my arm again. "How lovely."
"You like saying that don't you?"
"Yes, yes, I do."
There was some movement in front of me.
"Let's move up," commented Ava, leading me forwards. Which we only ended up taking two steps forward.
"I'm glad that I'm not very hungry," I said, sarcastically.
"It will be our turn eventually," assured Ava.
I took a deep breath in-the scent of unwashed bodies, blood, Ava's scent, and the smell of porridge filled my scents-and I let it out as quick as I could. I gagged and almost threw up at the thought of having that porridge again-and this time there wouldn't be any meat in there to tame the taste because I can't hunt yet.
"Got a whiff of the porridge, didn't you?" slightly teased Ava as we walked forward four steps.
"Yup. I'm quite sick of it."
"We all are."
"How much further are we?"
"Fourteen people-"
"There are fourteen people ahead of us?"
"No. There are fourteen people that I can see. So... probably twenty-seven people ahead of us."
I groaned.
Ava gave me a pat on my head-keep in mind that I am more than a foot taller than her, so the fact that she did this is pretty amazing-and she said, mockingly, "There, there. It's alright."
"I would glare at you if I knew where you were."
"But I thought you loved me," mock complain Ava, as she lead me steps-four-closer to food, even though it was porridge.
"I-"
"Fancy meeting you here!" interrupted what sounded like Rain for behind me.
"Rain?" I wondered.
"It's me, along with my guide. How are you?"
"Fine."
"Aeri, we need to move up," butted in Ava.
Another six steps.
We're cruising now!
"I guess it's rush hour," commented Rain.
"Yup," I simply replied, I didn't want to talk.
After Rain's several attempts to make small talk-and a half an hour later-Ava and I were finally at the slop center.
"Two bowls please." I heard bowls and silverware-more like woodware-being clashed together before I heard the slop of the porridge splatter into the bowls.
Ava grabbed the bowls-what, expecting me, a blind man, to take one?-and we both sat down at the near by and started eating.
"How are your eyes?" asked Ava.
"Still can't see anything out of them," I said. Ava dropped the topic after that, which I appreciated.
After we finished eating Ava asked where I wanted to go and told her I wanted to go talk to my Father. Ava, obviously, took me to my father.
"Aeri?" I heard my Father asked.
"I'm right here," I replied.
"What do you want to talk about?" questioned my Father, in our native tongue.
"I had a dream where he-who-shalt-not-be-named told Jazer about the you-know-what. Now Jazer wants to control us."
"He did what now?" snapped my Father, but not directed at me. I mumbled a yes. "We have another month before this happens, don't we?" Again I mumbled a yes. "I see, well then we better prepared for the worst."
We talked about other things and started making a plan against Jazer's evil plan. Afterwards, I went to the training area and started to spar with someone. I did a bunch of other stuff before I went to bed and fell asleep. When I woke up I pretty much did the same thing: eat, spar, talked to people, eat, spar and sleep. I was told that Malo hated this blindness, mostly, because he couldn't read and someone had to read the books he wanted to read for him-which was irritating because there's not always someone to read his books to him.
Ugh. I just wanted to see so badly. I couldn't believe that I-us-have less than a month to be professional at knowing how to do things while we're blind and get the crystal back to where it belongs. Ugh, hard weeks are coming up.
