-40-

wow are these tears? 40 hon

Keegan walked home from school like he did everyday. His lethargic heartbeat matched the tunes ringing in his ears and he walked almost silently on the abandoned pathway to his home.

His feet brushed along the usual golden grasses and the sky was an unusual silver color. A droplet splashed his arm and he glanced up to see rain starting to pour from the heavens.

He quickly ran forward, seeking shelter underneath an old willow tree. The tree was ancient and had a million carvings of initials and hearts all over it. The most interesting to Keegan was the boy in the tree.

He was fast asleep, snoring loudly with his glasses crooked and a copy of 'Gone with the Wind' on his chest.

Lightning crackled overhead and the boy woke up with a start, almost falling off the limb he was perched on.

"Oh dear me." The boy in the tree laughed, hopping down with ease. He straightened out his glasses and bowed, extending his hand.

"Name's Thomas. Yours?"

"Oh! It's uh, Keegan."

Thomas looked at Keegan straight in the eye, blue eyes locked in green.

"You, Keegan whatever-your-lastname-is, are going to be my best friend."

Keegan's grinned, and together they climbed the tree.

It became a habit, rain or shine, the pair would meet up by the ancient willow and hang out, sometimes not even speaking.

When summer began, Thomas disappeared. Keegan became desperate, searching all over the rural town for his lost friend.

Broken, he returned to the tree, a storm in his wake. Keegan wiped tears furiously, climbing up the tree in a frenzy of depressing thoughts.

Thomas's copy of 'Gone with the Wind' was nestled in its branches, alongside the initials of the pair that Thomas had carved oh-so carefully.

Keegan opened the book and watched a small slip of loose leaf paper fall out. A note.

It read:

Frieda and Oliver
Ryland and Tyler
Isabel and Patrick
Enrique and Ivy
Sam and Samantha
Benson and Justin
Ella and Olivia
Fred and Sarah
Omar and Helene
Ren and Libby
Emma and Eduardo
Guy and Remi
Undine and Yvonne
Yardon and Annalise
Sardine and Sally

Keegan looked confused, but soon decoded the message. He turned to the back and grabbed the coupon and ran too the joint, dashing into Thomas's arms.

"Never do that again, you greasy slut." Keegan grumbled. Thomas laughed, handing him a fry.

"You love me though."
