SAOIRSE

I'm falling. I can see nothing but the dark and the wind just keeps slapping my face and body like it's trying to tell me that I'm doing the wrong thing. But I don't care about the wind or the dark, I am too excited to care about anything around me now. All I can think about is the world where I'm falling into, Human world. Is it dangerous like other wizards always say? Is it beautiful like I've always imagined? Is it...free?

All of a sudden, my body crashes the ground. I think I heard a "crack" sound on my back. That doesn't sound good. I open my eyes and close them immediately. It is too bright that I have to narrow my sight to get used to the light. I try to sit up although the movement hurts my back. When my eyes can fully open, I see a beautiful garden with a red rose fence and a girl. Wait! There's a girl! She's standing 2 feet away from me, staring at me with horrified looks in her green eyes and the sprinkler in her hand looks so fierce as if it will attack me any second. She holds the sprinkler to my face, asks with a horrified voice:

"What the...? How...? Did you just fall from the sky?"

I try to stand up, look carefully at the sprinkler, prepare for the worst situation if it attacks.

"Well...yeah," I nod, "But I'm not a bad guy or anything. I do no harm to you. I'm just an unlucky wizard who fell into the wrong pla..."

"You're a what?" She cuts me off. What kind of girl who cuts a guy off when he's talking?

"A wizard," I repeat, "Is it that weird that I'm a wizard?"

"What's your name?"

"Jeremy. Yours?"

"Saoirse. How old are you?"

"Seventeen."

"Same," Then she looks at me with a sympathetic look in her eyes, "Well, Jeremy, at this age, you must be grown up. You must understand that there's no such thing in this world called a wizar..."

"No, not in this world, of course," It's my turn to cut her off, "I'm from another world called Magia, where magic comes from. I fell into a hole in the city's cemetery and it led me here."

They are all true but one thing. I did not fall into the hole, I jumped into it, and it was not accidental, it was purposeful. I just wanted to escape from Magia. Saoirse's face is covered by suspicion. She doesn't believe me. Of course she doesn't believe me, this is Human world, where magic does not exist. It's like in Magia, if I walked down the street and yelled that I didn't have any magic, everyone would say I was crazy and I could get in the insane asylum for that.

"You don't believe me, do you?" I ask and walk to the rose fence, "Do you believe in magic?"

Now Saoirse looks like she wants to say that I'm insane but I ignore that look. I touch the rose fence and whisper the spell. A sparkling golden light leaves my hand and as it touches a rose, the rose blooms. Saoirse watches my magic with amazement. When every rose on the fence blooms to its most beautiful redness, Saoirse stands up, walks to the fence, touches a rose and smells it with pleasure. I try not to show too obviously that I'm really proud of myself, then say:

"That was just a simple spell."

"You're amazing!"

She looks at me with admiration and that surprises me. Back in Magia, I was nothing but the black sheep of my family. No one ever paid any respect for me. I'd never done anything right and no one would praise me for what I did well, even my best friend, Jacob, wouldn't. This girl is the first and only one in the world who says that I'm amazing. And at the moment I see my surprised face in her green eyes, I hear a bell ringing in my ears. As the roses reach their highest level of beauty, her smile shines like the sun on a summer day.

"So, you are a wizard," Her sweet voice wakes me up from my dream, "Uhm...Do you want some eggs? You look like you're starving."

It is true that I'm starving and it would be stupid to refuse such a sweet invitation from such a beautiful girl. I nod and follow her into her house. It is the biggest house I've ever seen in my life and it has all the funny machines that I read from books about Human world back in Magia. There's a big black mirror where we can see people dancing and singing from everywhere in the world. Saoirse calls it a television. There's a closet in the kitchen she uses to keep her food cool and fresh. Saoirse calls it a fridge. I saw a telephone in a book but the one Saoirse has doesn't look like it. It's small and it doesn't have the thing that looks like a see-saw. Saoirse calls it a mobile or a cellphone. Everything in Saoirse's house is so new and interesting to me. I run all over the place and ask her the stupidest questions I could ever think of. So this is how human beings live. They don't cast spells, they invent things to make their lives easier. Human world is amazing!

After the meal, Saoirse asks if I want to see something more interesting and she takes me to an amusement park, where people come to play games, to have a good time with friends. I'm not surprised about the Ferris Wheel because we do have Ferris Wheels in Magia. The only difference is: people in Magia don't have to go into a glass cage to have a ride.

"This is not a cage, Jeremy. It's called a car."

Alright, a car then. Saoirse seems to enjoy the ride very much. It is undeniable how beautiful the city is to look from a high point. When our car reaches the top, Saoirse turns to me and says:

"It is amazingly beautiful, isn't it? I wonder what it looks like through a bird's eyes, it must feel really great...flying..."

"Do want to know how great flying feels?" I ask playfully.

"What do you mean?" She blinks her eyes.

"Have you forgotten? You're with a wizard."

Saoirse looks at me with amazement again. I love it when she looks at me like that. I love the way she blinks her eyes like she's expecting something incredible from me. The way she looks at me makes me feel important, that is the feeling I've yearned for 17 years of my life.

We don't even need wings on our backs to fly, just a little magic will do all the job. I have to admit one thing: the view in Human world is more beautiful than in Magia. People flying in Magia are not rare. It is hard to fly from the top of my house to the nearest bookstore without bumping into somebody. Here is different. The space is wider and there are no wizards flying around, except me and this human girl. We fly around the city, say hi to every bird we meet. We try to fly as high as we can to see if we can reach the stars, we play with the clouds, feel the wind blowing through our hair. We fly around as if the sky were only ours, the stars were our friends and the wind were our servant. The first time in my life, I feel freedom. No one to tell me what to do, no one to tell me I'm just the burden of the family. I don't follow the stupid rules about using magic outside Magia, I don't have to attend those cram schools in order to run the family's business. Forget about Magia, forget about my duty to the family, there're only me, Saoirse and freedom.

We take a rest on the rooftop of the highest building in the city. There are millions of blobs of light that look like fire-flies under us, Saoirse calls them streetlights. From where we sit, the Ferris Wheel looks just as small as a bean. As Saoirse enjoys the view of the city, she says to me gratefully:

"I had so much fun today. It all thanks to you, Jeremy."

I look away, try to hide the fact that my face is turning as red as a tomato.

"Well, uhm, don't mention it. You gave me food and a great time and stuff...I just think that I must do something in return."

"You know what, Jeremy? Today was the happiest day of my life. Before I met you, my world was so lonely. My parents always work, they're never home, even on holidays. I have no friends at school because my family is freaking rich. My world was so lonely that I just wanted to escape. I wanted to go to a new world where I have the power to fly to anywhere I want. It was so amazing that you came. You granted me my wish, Jeremy. You must be sent by God. I'm so lucky that I met you."

I turn to look her in the eye. I know that she's telling the truth. I know that her every word is sincere. The way she looks at me makes my heart race but I cannot take my eyes off her. She is so beautiful.

"No," I say, "I'm the lucky one because I met you. Back home, I was nobody. I was always the weakest wizard. I was never good enough to be praised by others. I also wanted to escape to a new world, just like you. Then I learned about the secret entrance to Human world from the oldest man in town. Then I met you, I was surprised by the fact that you were nothing like what the books said about human beings. You were so kind to me. You were the first one who ever told me that I was amazing. You made me feel important, Saoirse. And you know what? You have beautiful eyes."

Suddenly, I realize that our faces are getting closer to each other. It's like there's an electric current running through my body when our lips meet. The sound of the ringing bell gets louder and louder in my ears. I feel the heat on my lips, in my head, everywhere in my body. At that moment, I can almost hear the sound of fire-works exploding in my head. My first kiss is wonderful like that.

Hand in hand, we fly back to Saoirse's house. I'm having the best time of my life. But the happy time never lasts long. When our feet just touch the ground, a dozen of police wizards rushes out of the dark, they freeze me before I could react to the situation. Saoirse falls on the ground to the effect of the faint spell. They tie me up with a golden chain, so tight that I can't even move my fingers. While I'm panicking, trying to get closer to Saoirse, a familiar face appears above my face, the face of my best friend, Jacob. He looks me in the eye, says with a sympathetic voice:

"The only mistake you've made is using your powers, Jeremy."

And once again, I can see nothing but the dark.

I wake up two days later in prison. My family is too ashamed of me that they don't even bother to pay me any visit. The only thing they've done for me so far is sending me books as I request. The books they've sent are all about love. They remind me a lot of Saoirse, of how beautiful her eyes are, how lovely she is. They remind me of the time we spent together, the admiring looks in her eyes when she saw me doing magic. I miss her, I want to meet her really badly.

I don't know what they're going to do with me. Will they take away my powers? Will they kill me? Will they keep me here for the rest my life? Fine! Do whatever they want, I don't care enough to defend myself. I just want to meet Saoirse. I just want to see if she's ok. Or were her memories about me erased? They will do that to every human being who happens to know about Magia. Will she forget me? My Saoirse.

Jacob finally comes. He brings me my favorite cookies from the bakery on First Street. Jacob doesn't judge me nor say that the thing I did was wrong like everyone else does. He sits there, stares at me for a while, then asks:

"Are you mad at me?"

"No," I reply, "Why would I be? Your father is the chief of the Police. You just did what you were expected to do as his son." In case he misunderstands, I add, "And there's no sarcasm in that."

Jacob smiles:

"I know. But still...I'm sorry."

We sit, look out the tiny barred window of the cell in silence. Then Jacob asks:

"Was it fun?"

"Yeah," I answer.

"I'm glad it was," He stands up, starts to leave, then it's like he remembers something, he stops and says, "Hey, do you know...her name, in Irish, means 'freedom'?"

"Yes, I know. Saoirse means 'freedom'."
