One last time
The day in Snowdin had started the same as usual the residents came out their homes often greeting their neighbors before leaving for the day, shopkeepers opening their businesses and monsters rushing off to work. Grillby was the local Bar owner, who had taken his niece to Hotlands to go home after a short visit with him in Snowdin. After a quick hello to his brother and Sister-in-law and saying goodbye to his niece he went back to Snowdin to open his bar. After doing all the necessary chores, I opened the door and the usual flood of customers came in. All except one.
Sans, he was Grillby's most frequent customer, he would come in daily on his "Lunchbreaks" from his duty as a patrol officer and his other various jobs. All of the other patrons in the bar loved Sans, he often came in and drank Grillby's ketchup and often stayed late after all his shifts were over drinking himself into a stupor. More than once, Sans' younger brother Papyrus would eat to drag Sans out Grillby's bar. Grillby liked Papyrus, but he was a monster of a few words and Papyrus often being a monster who enjoyed conversation, they did not have many conversations.
Grillby tended to the bar expecting to see Sans stroll in with his usual grin on his face. Time passes and Grillby had not seen Skull or tailbone of the skeleton monster, this was strange. It seemed that the other regulars noticed Sans' absence as well, but no one knew where it was. Eventually as the day goes on, monsters come in and out with still no sign of Sans. Grillby had known Sans for years, and he'd never seen Sans miss coming into the bar. Sans had been a customer since he arrived in Snowdin. A nagging feeling began to plague him as he served other customers throughout the day. Grillby tried to shake off the feeling, Sans was a grown monster, he could take care of himself. Right?
Eventually the last of the monsters filtered out, and Grillby closed the door locking it behind them. Grillby began to close up shop for the night, sweeping the floor and cleaning up. Grillby started thinking about Fuku and if she'd settled back home with her parents alright. When Grillby suddenly heard a knock at the bar door snapping him from his thoughts, he looked up, it was Papyrus.
Grillby walks over to the door and opens it, I noticed that Papyrus did not look like his usual self. His eye lights were dimmer, he was slightly hunched and even his smile seemed strained.
"HELLO GRILLBY" His voice was cracking and soft, it sounded like he'd been yelling all day.
"Hello Papyrus, what brings you by?" Grillby already had a feeling about why he was here. Part of him had hoped that, Papyrus would have come to tell him where Sans had been. Grillby knew however that from the look on Papyrus's face, this was not the case.
"I WANTED TO ASK IF YOU'VE SEEN SANS, I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR HIM ALL DAY" As I said this Papyrus looked like it was going to burst into tears. Grillby shook his head, although he desperately wished he could say he had. Papyrus seemed to deflate in front of Grillby's eyes.
"OH, WELL THEN ... I'M SURE HE 'LL TURN UP SOON, GOODNIGHT GRILLBY" Grillby nodded and watched as Papyrus left dejectedly heading towards his and Sans' house. Grillby closed the door in a slight panic, He hoped Sans was okay. Papyrus must have looked all over the underground for him, judging by how tired he looked. As Grillby continued to clean up, more monsters showed up asking if I knew anything about Sans whereabouts. Everyone from customers, to even the captain of the guards herself, Undyne. Grillby could see from his windows lanterns in the dark and could hear Sans name being called over and over.
Grillby finally finished with cleaning the bar and threw on his jacket, ready to close the bar and join the search.when suddenly there was a loud bang with glasses falling from the shelves behind him. Grillby turned around in alarm, there on the floor surrounded by broken glass, was Sans. Sans was hunched over in a small ball covered in snow, his clothes soaked and his beloved jacket torn and burned. He looked awful, Grillby immediately ran over to him. Sans had burns on his skull and arm bones, scratches all over his legs as well.
"Sans?" Grillby knelled down next to the skeleton, Sans looked up, but in a completely different direction to where Grillby was.
"Grillbz? I .... c..can't .... wh..where are you?" Sans tried to move forward almost falling onto the shattered glasses. Grillby caught him, hooking an arm around the skeletons torso holding him up. The water from Sans' clothes soaked through Grillby's sleeve, causing his skin to sizzle. Grillby flinched, but forced himself to focus on the problem at hand.
"I'm right here, what happened?" Sans was hiccuping and crying, and Grillby could feel that he was freezing! Grillby wrapped him up in his coat trying to use his flames to warm the freezing skeleton.
Sans began to have a coughing fit before passing out in the flame monsters arms. Grillby decided to check his HP, he knew it was invasive but he'd apologize later.
Sans Attack 1
HP: 0.5
Grillby was stunned, the fact that Sans had not been dusted by now was a miracle. Sans seemed to be struggling to breath, Grillby decided to save the questions for later. He ran out the door and to his relief saw Undyne talking to Papyrus, he ran up to them. At first they seemed happy to see him, but then they saw the passed skeleton in his arms. Undyne opened her mouth to speak first, but Grillby cut her off.
"No time for questions, Sans needs help now" Undyne nodded understandingly and Papyrus, her and Grillby took Sans to Alphy's. After a rather uncomfortable ride for Grillby (who was still holding Sans) with the river person, they made it to Hotlands. Undyne woke Alphy's up and when she saw Sans and Grillby explained his state, Alphy's quickly took them to the lab.
After what seemed like eternity, Alphy's had managed to stabilize Sans' soul. Papyrus looked shaken to the core and the tension settled. Papyrus looked to Grillby and already knew what Papyrus was going to ask. However, Alphy's beat him to it.
"Grillby, w ... where d..d.did you find Sans?" Now all eyes in the room landed on Grillby which made him a little uncomfortable, but he still continued. He told Alphy's all I knew, that he was cleaning and about to leave, when Sans just appeared bringing down to shelf of glasses. Undyne seemed skeptical.
"Aww come'on Grillbz monsters don't just appear out of thin air" Papyrus wrung his hands together nervously as Undyne spoke.
"ACTUALLY, MY BROTHERS ABLE TO TELEPORT, HE TRIES TO KEEP IT SECRET, BUT I FIGURED IT OUT, HE'S ALSO BEEN ACTING REALLY STRANGE LATELY. LIKE HE'S FORGOTTEN WHERE HE WAS, SO WHEN I COULD NOT FIND HIM AT HIS USUAL NAPPING SPOTS, I PANICKED "Papyrus looked down at his feet. Grillby recalled how strange Sans had been acting, over the past few months had been bumping into things, looking in the wrong directions when someone called his name and just last week, he saw Sans feeling his way from the counter after closing. Grillby had always thought it was odd, but he'd rationalized it as Sans being drunk. Since Sans had been ordering a lot more alcohol around that time as well.
"What? Why didn't you tell me that Sans could teleport?" Undyne asked looking really shocked.
"BECAUSE SANS OBVIOUSLY DID NOT WANT OTHER MONSTERS TO KNOW, NOT EVEN ME" Papyrus finally broke down into tears, Undyne and Grillby spent the rest of the time consoling the tall skeleton. Alphy's quickly left and went back to the lab, she was never very good in these situations.
The three never left the lab, Alphy's had helped spread the word that Sans had been found that it was safe and in stable conditions. Eventually the situation itself came to light when Sans woke up and he came clean. He had gone completely blind. It started happening a little over a month ago and it had gotten worse and worse. That morning he 'woken up and could not see anything, in hysterics he'd transported straight into the snow outside, he said he remembers being hot, then wet, passing out and then falling into Grillby's, before passing out again. Papyrus tried to cheer his brother up, but Sans insisted on being alone.
A few days later Sans was brought home, but he did not leave his room. Papyrus became visibly more and more anxious about his brother as the days passed. After a week Grillby decided to try and talk to him, hoping maybe he could help. It was late one night, when he stopped by, Grillby was greeted at the door by Papyrus dressed in his Battle Armor.
"OH, HELLO GRILLBY" Papyrus smiled
"Hello Papyrus, I was hoping to see Sans" Papyrus frowned, then sighed.
"HE'S STILL IN HIS ROOM, I CAN NOT GET HIM TO LEAVE, I'VE TRIED EVERYTHING, I MUST GO HAVE A TRAINING SESSION WITH UNDYNE, BUT YOU'RE MORE THAN WELCOME TO STAY SANS SAID HE'D BE FINE, BUT HONESTLY I'D FEEL BETTER IF YOU WERE HERE WITH HIM "Grillby nods and says goodbye to Papyrus as he leaves for training. He then closes the front door then goes upstairs, to Sans door. He knocked on the door and heard a muffled groan.
"What is it Papyrus?"
"Sans it's Grillby, can we talk?"
"No, Grillby I don't want to talk"
"Sans you can't hide in there forever"
"Watch me"
"Sans, either you open up or I'll let myself in"
"I'd like to see you try"
Grillby sighed, he used his powers to shift from his solid form into a more flexible one, he slipped under the crack of the door dragging some clothes under with him. He shifted back to his solid form slipping back into his clothes. Sans heard the flame monster's entrance, but didn't react. Sans was sitting on his bed, hugging his legs to his chest. Grillby sat down on the end of the bed ignoring the messy dark room. Grillby's flames lit the room like a large candle, and he could see an empty plate by the door, all the draws in the cabinet were open and all of Sans clothes were on the floor. Sans himself had a pair of shorts on, backwards, a sleeveless t-shirt that was on wrong, his head was through an arm hole, with his other arm where his head should have been.
"Sans?" Silence ensued the skeleton uncurled, staring up at Grillby. His eye lights were gone, his eye sockets filled with nothing but darkness.
"What do you want Grillby" Sans said coldly
"I just want to help.."
"I DON'T NEED HELP!" After that outburst Sans went dead silent again, small tears forming at the edges of his eye sockets.
"I don't need help, I'll be fine"
"Sans, you're wearing your clothes wrong"
" I know that dammit, I know how to dress! I can look after myself!"
"Sans a week ago you almost dusted, because you tried to handle things on your own"
"Grillby you don't understand, I have to figure this out, I have to get around on my own! I can't afford to rely on other monsters to see! I..I...Can't or else the human will..." Sans was trembling tears falling down his face.
"What do you mean Sans? What will the human do?" Sans shook his head at Grillby's question.
"You wouldn't believe me if I told you"
"Sans, nothing bad is going to happen if you let someone help you"
"You're wrong"
"Fine, but nothing good is going to happen if you stay in this room. Do you know how worried Papyrus is? How many monsters are constantly asking him how you're doing?"
"I....know......I just...I don't want my bro to have to look after me more than he has to, it's not fair on him. I can't ask him or anyone else to give up their time just to make sure I don't trip and dust on the stairs"
"Sans no one would mind helping you, you're not going to be a burden on anyone I promise. If you let others help you, you'll find that you'll be able to get around almost exactly like before"
"Yeah, but who? Who'd be willing to put up with my lazy bones"
"Well I know Papyrus would definitely help, and I will definitely help you"
"You'd really be willing to help me?"
"Of course, I care about you Sans alot of others do as well" Grillby moves to sit next to Sans.
"Just let us help you" Sans sighed, but nodded. Grillby reached over and tugged Sans shirt up a bit, Sans understanding the message lifted his arms so Grillby could help him put his shirt on correctly. Sans had a bit of a blue hue on his cheeks, Grillby didn't say anything but thought it was rather cute. After he'd helped Sans get his shirt on correctly he held Sans hand and stood up. He gently led Sans off the bed to the door, Sans squeezes Grillby's hand to try make him walk a bit slower. Grillby complies, and lets Sans put his free hand against the wall for support.
The two slowly made their way down the stairs and slowly lead Sans to the kitchen, sitting Sans down. Grillby let go of Sans hand, and immediately Sans hand grabbed his shirt.
"I'm just going to make us something to drink"
"Oh, sorry" Sans said sheepishly.
"Don't be, I should've said something" Sans still seemed hesitant but let go of Grillby's shirt.
"What do you want? Coffee or hot coco, tea?" Sans thought for a second.
"I gues I could go for some hot coco"
"Sure" Grillby went around the kitchen, making hot coco and a cup of coffee beans. The two sat down and talked for a little.
About an hour later Papyrus came home. He took one look at Sans and ran to hug him. Sans tried to calm hos brothers excitement, but Papyrus couldn't stop saying how happy he was that Sans had come out of his room.
Grillby was invited to stay the night, and three of them sat on the couch together. Papyrus and Grillby watched the show, occasionally relaying information to Sans when no one was talking. Sans just listened quietly leaning against Grillby with a blanket draped over him.
Papyrus excused himself to his room, since he was rather tired out from his training session with Undyne. Grillby and Sans both said goodnight, then turned their attention back to the show.
In the middle of the show, Grillby could feel Sans shaking. A soft sob came from the skeleton next to me.
"Sans?" Grillby put his arm around Sans, Sans moved closer hugging Grillby and silent crying into his shirt. Grillby wrapped his arms around Sans, not saying anything. He knew that this was going to happen eventually. This was a big change and not an easy one to adjust to.
"Grillbz?" Sans whispered
"Yeah Sans?"
"Do you think I'll ever get my vision back?"
"I don't know Sans, but even if it doesn't we'll figure it out"
"I won't be able to find my favorite napping spots, or the stars again, or my brother what if I forget what things look like?"
"Sans..."
"I'd give anything to see again, one last time" Sans began to cry a little more and Grillby let him, Sans cried himself to sleep in Grillbys arms and Grillby dozed off as well. Whatever came their way they'd face it together.
AUTHORS NOTE: This was super angsty and cringey.
