The Truth Behind The Mission
As he was seen cleaning his home by himself, Ayumu began to think about what Shiki was up to. This was his very first solo mission and he was sure he could clear it but, he felt off about this. A feeling of uneasiness kept washing over him when he thought about his son. Before his mind could dwell upon it further, Ayumu felt his phone vibrating as he quickly answered it.
"Koritsu Residence, this is Ayumu speak-"
"It's a been a while, hasn't it, partner?"
~On Jinoshima~
"Man, I knew a Nokia was durable but to think the damn thing actually managed to survive during that fight I had. Talk about a good investment."
With a smirk on his face, Toji was seen leaning against a tree as he was on his cellphone. Right next to him, Shiki was seen chained to a tree as his wounds were slowly healing due to Asuramaru using Reversed Cursed Technique to repair the boy's body. After a yawn escaped the man's mouth, he went back to talking with Ayumu.
"What are you doing?"
"You see, I had a job to complete on this island known as Jinoshima. The head of the Zenin clan paid me a good amount to do this job despite me cutting my ties with the clan and taking my wife's surname of Fushiguro."
"Toji, if you did ANYTHING to my child, I will-"
"Oh, he really is your kid? I had a guess but thanks for confirming. Don't worry, he's not dead yet. That cursed treasure is using a reverse cursed technique to repair his body. Since it's already bonded with him, simply taking away won't forcibly stop it. But.....if I took it far enough away it won't be as effective and with the wounds he got, he'll definitely be dead."
As Toji said this, he reached into the mouth of the cursed spirit that was wrapped around his body. In his grasp was now a handgun as he began to load it and setting his sights on Shiki. Suddenly the sound of a gunshot echoed throughout the forest and in the phone as Toji fired a shot just inches away from the boy's head.
"Since we're old partners, I'm willing to make a deal. I do my job to the fullest, but if someone were to pay me more than my current employer, I don't mind cancelling my current contract."
"........how much did Mukuro pay you and why did he hire you?"
"He actually paid me 1.5 million yen. As for why he hired me, unless you make me terminate my contract with him, my lips are sealed."
~With Ayumu~
The wooden table in front of Ayumu was reduced to nothing but splinters as his wind magic shortly began to burst from his body. As the man walked over to his room, he rummaged through his belongings before finding a black box. When he opened it, he let a sigh escape from his mouth.
"Toji, if you leave the island of Jinoshima right now whilst sparing my son, I will give you something worth far more than just a measly 1.5 million yen."
"Really now? What could you possibly have that I would wa-"
"S-Ranked Cursed Treasure:Inverted Spear of Heaven. The treasure that forcibly negates any cursed technique, magic, or domain it comes into contact with. Even you can see the value of said item in the world we work in. So i'll only ask this once, do we have a deal?"
".............you really know how to dangle a carrot in front of someone. Fine then, we have a deal, Ayumu."
~2 hours later~
As he was now at the entrance of Murakumo Village, Toji looked at the person he carried over his shoulder. While Shiki was still unconscious, the sorcerer killer walked inside of the village as he was met with the village chief, Kurogane.
"That's the executioner! What have you done to-"
"Easy there, he's still alive. I just came to drop him off. This may not be my business to tell you, but I was there for the whole thing. He killed that beast that you wanted dead. Not only that, he got the other job you wanted done, even if you didn't tell him."
The moment Toji said this, he noticed something behind Kurogane's back. It was a large pole with a body tied to it. A severed head sitting on top of the spike of the pole as the blood was trickling down. After taking Shiki to a nearby hut and leaving Asuramaru with him, the sorcerer killer began to leave the village as he was heading towards a boat that was on the shore of the island. As he began to push the boat out, he stepped inside it and began to row away from the island. The moment he did, he picked up his phone as he made a call.
"It's done, Ayumu. Your son is now resting in the village of the island and recovering. I'm already off of the island so I can't get to him, plus the cursed treasure:Asuramaru, is still beside him."
"Very well. I will comply with my end of the deal, but you have one more condition to fulfill. Why did Zenin Mukuro hire you to go the island?"
"I don't care....not about the affairs of the Zenin clan, the organization, nor what happens to my former friends. However, I slightly agreed with Mukuro on this matter. But after seeing how the village really is, I'm glad I took your offer. Mukuro hired me to stop them from finishing the mission that Shiranui issued."
"It was just an extermination of a beast. Why would Mukuro want to stop Shiki from achieving that?"
"Heh. Looks like I gotta spell it out for you. The person that Mukuro was worried about wasn't your son. The real mission was given to the closest being to your son."
~The Next Day~
As he was resting inside a hut near the center of Murakumo Village, Shiki was seen slowly opening his eyes as he saw Asuramaru next to him. The moment the glasses wearing boy tried to get up, he saw Kurogane standing at the entrance of the hut. Seeing that the leader of the village was now in front of him, the executioner had to come clean about the state of the mission.
"Chief Kurogane. About the Beast of Jinoshima, it has been successfully slain. However, I have unfortunate news to report. Both Ruri and Rika......are.......are ...........dead."
".......allow me to tell you a tale, Koritsu Shiki. Long ago, this island use to be home to both mages and people like us. Day in and day out, the mages would abuse their power to make us do unspeakable acts. From making us work without pay to giving them eighty-percent of the food that we hunted and risked our lives for. They even forced themselves upon the women of our people just so their offspring could flourish and continue the cycle. In some cases, those very children would kill their own parents by the time they mastered their magic."
As Kurogane said this, he began to turn around as he looked at the center of the village. While Shiki's eyes were fixed on the man's back, he saw the chief's hands were clenched into fists. Soon the chief began to continue his story so that the executioner can be fully aware of the situation.
"Those mages, waving their powers around and asking to be worshipped as if they were gods. They are nothing but heretics trying to mask their hideous nature by calling themselves humans. When I became chief of Murakumo village, I wanted to make a change. That's why I began to make my own dream a reality. An island free of those heretics and we without magic can have a place where the world of magic shall never set foot upon this place again. To this end, I needed to do something about the mages that decided to call this place THEIR home. To the point I even casted away my own daughter."
"Your daughter..........."
"Why are you feigning ignorance, Koritsu Shiki? You've met my daughter before and she was quite attached to you for some strange reason. Tell me, Shiki. How did it feel when you saw my heretic daughter's corpse? How did it feel to see Kurogane Rika die?"
