Speechless!
Hi guys, we have another Luke POV plus you get to meet some of Sang's animals that are going to hopefully have a bigish part in the future!
I hope you enjoy the super long chapter!! (over 4000 words) I felt bad that I hadn't given you a new update for a few days!
Please, enjoy, comment and tell me what you think of the ones you're going to meet!
Luke's POV: (from leaving Erica's house)
North is going to kill me if I go after Cupcake and Titch.
Scratch that, I took his Jeep again-his going to kill me anyway. I am kind of surprised that my phone has not blown up yet with his angry phone calls. Looks like I might as well go find Cupcake! A second later I have my phone out and attached to the built-in satnav screen that North added a few months ago.
"Okay Cupcake, where are you going?" I attempt an evil laugh but start coughing in the middle, which makes me almost choak on my saliva. I've been told I'm a good driver, my ADHD making my reaction time better, which makes me a much safer driver(apparently)! But that doesn't apply when I'm hacking up a lung and I almost swerve off the road, note to self: don't attempt evil laughs(or at least not while driving)!
Sang's Land rover is approximately half a mile in front of me according to the little red dot on the screen. It makes sense that North's Jeep would be a black dot, I consider changing it to pink for a moment but can't really be arsed at this point, I just really want to find the girls.
"After the red dot we go!" I mutter to myself as I take a right turn to keep myself half a mile back. I follow them for about ten minutes before they stop. I pull up thinking that it's Sang's house and I'm just getting ready to disconnect the phone so that I can continue on foot, when the dot moves off again.
"Okay, just a quick stop then was it, Cupcake?" I mutter to myself, the dot keeps driving and I realise that it's driving in a circle back towards Erica's. Are you kidding? I think that she going to go all the way when she turns again. She ends up pulling up only four miles away from Erica's, even though she went on a drive that took us almost twenty. Either she always drives that way (unlikely in my opinion) or she knew that I was following her. Impressive. It means that she managed to follow me when I went to put the bug on her car. Which is exceedingly difficult if I say so myself, no-one can follow me when I'm trying to be quiet! So, the question I am now asking is if I should continue following her. I try to think about it, but my impulsive nature makes me want to follow any way. So, I do.
I end up pulling up against a rough wooden fence. It looks like it's not going to open when a scanner pops up from the top. The red-light washes over the Jeep. A warning light blares on the dash for a moment then the doors lock. Click.
"What the F**K" manages to get past my lips as the car revs and the gate slides open revealing the fact that the wood is a front for some highly sophisticated, high tec, metal gates. The Jeep shoots forwards, the Land rover is parked under a shelter which the Jeep parks, itself, next to.
"What the heck is going on?" I yell, sounding increasingly like North as I whack at the door lock. Surprisingly it pops open.
"Okay..." I'm super wary now, but I really want to be out of the car that just locked me in so I jump out as fast as possible. The quiet noises surprise me. Yet, it makes me feel calm, in fact this whole place reminds me of Sang. Right now, I have to figure out where to go and find the girls so that I don't get eaten or something, from the animals I'm sure are in this forest somewhere. The slightly warn path looks like a good place to start.
"I'm coming Cupcake!" I mutter, as I start walking, noises becoming louder from all sides, I hear what could be a lion? Great, I'm going to get eaten by a lion before I get to see where Sang lives! A parrot flies in front of me as the noise of birds increases to an almost deafening level. In fact, they sound worried. Scared. Which means... predator of some kind. Behind me. I turn.
I think I would prefer the lion.
I fact I know I would prefer the lion. Lions are less dangerous than black bears. Oh my god I'm dead. Then he turns and wanders off. WTF. Bears do not do that; they don't just leave things that wander into their territory alone. But okay, I am no longer questioning this, this place is weird, yet it doesn't feel as dangerous as I know it should be! I need to get to safety; a house would be great right about now!
The path is hardly warn, and there don't seem to be any human footprint apart from the ones I'm currently making. Instead, I can see hoof and paw prints littering the path. I'll say it again, this is one weird place, kind of cool, but totally weird. This theory is only compounded when I come out of the forest to see a huge plain, another group of trees seems to be on the other side and I'm pretty certain that I can see a house deep within them. Looks like I know where I'm heading then! I am so having a conversation with Cupcake about keeping bears in the garden when I get there! I'm heading for the building when a noise like thunder comes from my left. It's not thunder. This day just gets better and better! A dam herd of something is racing at me.
"RUN THIS WAY!" A voice screams from my right, and I turn to see two galloping horses racing straight for me. A grey one with blonde hair streaming behind her and a white with a dark-haired girl on. I start running the herd getting very close behind me.
The blond leans down and wraps an arm around her horse's neck hand weaving into the mane. Her other arm crooked as she holds it out.
"YOU GET ONE SHOT AT THIS NINJA!" Sang yells at me, "OR YOUR PROBABLY DEAD, YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO GRAB MY ARM AND JUMP ON!" I've barely registered her words before she's right in front of me. Almost automatically I hold my arm out at the correct hight. A moment later her hand is on my elbow as I grab hers.
"JUMP!" Jess yells from the other horse. I do, swinging my leg in an attempt to get that over his rump. I do. Just. Sang wheels the horse round as she throws her arm back to almost toss me on behind her. The momentum helps to throw me further on.
"Hold tight!" her voice is barely a whisper now; yelling must have damaged it, badly. I wrap my arms around her tight as I try to stay on with no saddle, both horses are now racing for the wood with the building. Jess's just in front as we try to outrun the herd.
We make it. The horses slow to a trot when the reach the trees then drop to a walk their sides heaving.
"What the actual f**k?" I ask them both my arms still tightly wrapped around Sang. Jess lets out a snorting laugh and Sang tenses. Her hands move at Jess and I realise she's signing. Can you ask him if his okay? Her hands say.
"I'm good and I ..." she interrupts me with her hands, and you understand sign, just checking! She flashes me a grin. Then I notice that she is using both hands to sign.
"The horse, he..." again someone interrupts but this time it Jess with her voice.
"They know where their going!" one of her hands gestures towards the huge building that we are coming up on.
"Who are you?" I is all I can ask as I take in the full scope of the building. Jess lets out another snort as she slides of her horse and thanks it. Literally, she says thank you to the horse. She then looks at me expectantly.
"What?" Sang taps my arm, you're going to have to let go and get off so that I can! She signs at me to the sound of Jess laughing again. Then I realise how stupid my question sounded.
"Yep right, on it!" Sang starts to giggle as I let go and slide off wincing. My legs feel way over stretched I go to smile back when it turns into a coughing fit.
"Sang!" Jess calls worriedly as she hurries over. Sang manages to sign I'm good as she sides off still struggling to breathe.
"Sure, you are Cupcake, and I'm the queen of England!" I drawl out quietly in an over exaggerated accent, from the dancing laughter in their eyes both the girls hear it though. Sang's coughing increase before she stumbles, Jess is right there catching her.
"Maybe not quite so fine hey S?" she mutters at Sang, the two horses are looking, you know if I didn't know it was impossible, I would say there're looking worried. Then they both turn and trot back into the wood.
"Umm the horses are running off!" I say watching them, when I don't get an answer from them, I see that they have both gone inside. "Okay, so the horses can run off?" I ask myself; the girls didn't seem worried by it in the slightest. "I'm going to assume that's a yes..." I mutter following what I hope is the path that they took into the building. I walk between to what look like wings of a hospital, at least from the outside, what the heck is this place?
Max and another dog race out of the door just before I get there, the other dog sniffs me and then lets out a low bark, Max barks back and the other dog makes a shrugging motion. I think I'm going crazy, worried horses and shrugging dogs, great I'm officially crazy! The shrugging seems to be an allowance for me to come in as Max trots up and nudges my hand before trotting inside and looking back at me.
"Okay Max, I'm coming!" I splutter as he comes back and nudges me again. This time catching the bottom of my untucked shirt and tugging me onwards and into the unknown.
This place is crazy! But also, my dream home, I swear this is where I would live if I could. I spend several minutes staring around at the fact that the house has no floors, no stair and tonnes of things to climb. This would explain why Jess looks as though she's been lifting major weights since I last saw her. Climbing this would get you in shape. The number of animals would surprise me if it were anyone else but my Cupcake. My Cupcake? I continue looking round until I come face to face with several cat-like creatures, all with wickedly sharp teeth. Gulp.
"Cupcake? Titch?" I whisper hoping one of them will hear me and save me from the new threat. I hear giggles that turn to coughing behind me along with a classic Jess snort of laughter. Jess's laughter increases, as I stay totally still, she's muttering to Sang soothingly.
"Can one of you please stop this thing from eating me!" I'm slightly panicked now as the three cat things growled lowly. "Oh, my f*****g god help!" I whisper shout as Jess starts laughing harder. "Jessica Lee! Will you come and bloody rescue...!" the closest cat steps forward, "Me!" squeaks out of my mouth as Jess continues to laugh. A low whistle comes from behind me. The cats gazes snap from me to the girls another whistle sounds. The cat like creatures back off, sort of, two of them turn and curl up while the other tenses ready to spring. I shut my eyes and the last one leaps directly over my head. I open my eyes just in time to see its feet clear my view line. Hoping the fact that they have lain down and look relaxed again means that I'm safe, I turn slowly to see the lynx nuzzling up to Sang while giving me a look that quite clearly says: mahaha I get to snuggle, and you don't! I narrow my eyes at it as Cupcake drops a kiss on his head.
I'm about to get annoyed at Jess for not saving me when a light blares around the room. Both the girl's tense, glancing towards a screen I didn't see attached to the wall by my head. Two codes are flashing. A12. A15. Sang and Jess's eyes meet, and I watch them have a super quick conversation, like I used to with my brothers. Not that we can do it that easily anymore, not since Kayli. Some of us can, but it's like we have our own little groups of in syncness. It's a sad thought, for me anyway.
Both girls go to get up but Cupcake trips, still weak from the coughing fit. Jess sends me a glance.
"Do you maybe want to come help!" she snaps at me, the laughing girl from moments ago now fully gone. I just stare in shock; I've hardly ever seen Jess serious. Sang taps her friends' arm and signs Jess, you can't just demand you need to explain, and we need to hurry. She looks at me then signs at me can you give us a hand please, Jess did not mean to be that rude, but we are both worried! I find myself nodding instantly.
"Why can't you talk now? You were fine this afternoon!" both the girls tense and have another eye conversation. Another time! Sang signs at me, she continues, and signs follow us! Jess helps her up and they both make their way through a set of double doors, that whoosh open when they get there. I quickly follow before the doors can shut on me and enter something totally different to the slightly shabby climbing room that I just came from. A state-of-the-art medical facility stretches out in front of me.
"Who the hell are you Cupcake?" I know my mouth is hanging open.
"No time for that right now, a wolf and a cheetah are going into labour!" It takes me a second to process what Jess just said, a wolf and a cheetah? Yeah, ok this is a dream.
"It's not a dream!" Jess says a smile almost twitching on her lips and I realise that I said it out loud. Sang gestures for us to go down the corridor then turns to Jess; they have another dam eyes conversation that I can't read before titch turns to me "Sang says you can help her while I go see to the cheetah!" Jess sounds dubious, but gestures for me to take her place helping Sang to walk. The second I do she races down the corridor. Bay 12! Sang signs. I pause for a second before scooping her up bridle style into my arms, there being no way she can walk down the corridor as weak as she seems to be right now, not when she's still coughing intermittently. I freeze when she tenses in my arms, she glances up and me and I swear my heart stops beating. I do not blush easily, but in the moment my cheeks definitely heat up. Her blush matches mine and she relaxes before looking away. She points down the hall and I get the message, we aren't going to talk about it, and start walking. The small girl fits easily against me and it just feels right. Similar to when she was holding my hand earlier. She's so light, so small, seems so delicate yet something tells me she's a hell of a lot stronger than she shows the world.
When Cupcake taps on my shoulder several times, I look down at her. She points to the bay two back and I see that it has a number twelve above it.
"Oh right! I'll go back then, shall I?" She nods looking very worried, as is turn I catch a glimpse of what is in bay fourteen, it's only a glimpse but I swear that it's a giant panda! "That's not a...?" I trail off almost afraid to ask what I've stumbled into. Giant panda, giving birth in two to three weeks! She signs matter of fact. "Okay it is!" I mutter, her lip quirk to the side. I find mine inching up into my classic smile when hers do so. I stop outside bay twelve and Sang wriggles to be put down. Which makes my arms tighten around her for a second before I let her slide down my body.
"That a cheetah!" I exclaim having not quite believed her up to this point. She nods and climbs into the pen, "Sang get out of there! That. Is. A. Cheetah!" I hiss trying not to disturb it. She gives me a shut it look as she drops to her knee beside the spotted animal. Her hands running over it, an assessing gaze focused on its backside. Her mouth moves but no words come out and she scowls, run back to bay ten and get me four towels, two vials of o-x-y-t-o-c-i-n (she spells it out for me) and two syringes! When I hesitate to wait for more instructions she adds, now please, with her hands and I run for bay ten.
It takes me a few minutes to find the drug she's after as there seems to be tonnes in the cupboards, all organised by no system I know. I'm carful to not mess the area up too much as I frantically such for the drug. When I find the two tiny vials, I take them scoop up a pair of sealed syringes. What was the other thing oh yeah towels! I quickly grab four and wrap the drugs and syringes in them. Then I'm racing back. Sang's sitting stroking the cheetah by the time I get back and shove the supplies at her, she takes one syringe and one vial and two of the towels. Can you go give the rest to J in Bay 15!
I turn, scooping the rest of the supplies up and continue running down the corridor, past the empty Bay thirteen, past the giant panda past another empty bay and a then I'm at bay fifteen. Jess is kneeling in the straw beside...
"That's an actual wolf! Jesus f*****g Christ, that is an actual f*****g wolf!" I almost yell doing a very good impression of my best friend. Titch obviously thinks this too as she mutters.
"Who are you Gabe? I thought you were the queen of in England, pretty certain she, doesn't swear!" Jess is still looking at the wolf in front of her, "Okay, what did S send you with?" she asks looking in my arms, I just wordlessly hand her the items I was told to fetch, "Perfect!" she mutters nodding, "Can you go back to Sang and use the com system, she obviously can't talk at the moment so she can sign to you and you can relay to me!" she says the part about not being able to talk with an angry glare at me. "Now Lucien Taylor!" she copies my use of her full name from earlier and I quickly head back to Cupcake before I can be scaled by Jess's glare.
I get back to the stunning blonde to find her holding a tiny baby cheetah and crying. I don't understand why for a second, then I see the adult cheetah. She's not breathing.
"Dam Cupcake, I'm so sorry." I whisper as I slide into the pen with her. Automatically, I wrap my arm around her shoulders, realising a second later that this is the second time I've reached for her in the last twenty miniates. I would hate it if someone touch me without permission! I try not to tense or let the memories in, I need to focus on Sang now! This time she relaxes a lot quicker than when I scooped her into my arms before. "Sorry!" I whisper again not sure if I'm apologising for hugging her or the cheetah this time. It doesn't seem to matter; she just buries her head in my neck sobbing. The small cat in her arms squirms and she cuddles it close into her neck, which is right next to mine at the moment. The cheetah settles down and its tiny eyes close. Sang places it half on her lap half on mine and signs meet my new baby S-a-m-i-r-a, she looks at where Samira is cuddled in between us and she adds, looks like it might be our baby...
"S, I really need your help, I'm losing her!" Jess's voice comes out of nowhere, shocking me as Sang turns and points at a button before signing tell her we're on our way! I quickly press the button and relay the message as Sang stands up still holding Samira wrapped in her towel. She holds the bundle out to me as I follow her lead and rise to standing taking Sam from her then tucking my other arm around her, while she's looking stronger than just after the coughing the fits, she's pale as if she's going into shock.
"Hurry guys, Luke, pick her up dammit!" Jess's voices comes over the intercom again. I glance at Cupcake who nods hesitantly and takes Sam again as I scoop her up. We are down to bay fifteen in less than a minute, Jess is in a similar position to Sang five minutes ago, kneeing over the side of the wolf, but this time the mother is still breathing, just. Sang doesn't even have to ask to be let down this time, instead I place her and Sam down next to Jess. She places her bundle still wrapped in the straw and starts assessing what she can do. She produces a stethoscope seemingly from nowhere and listens to the wolf chest. Fluid round the heart, her hands flash, Jess curses and drops her head, so that she misses the next thing that Sang signs, we might be able to save the baby!
"Titch, she says we can save the baby!" I shake Jess's shoulders to bring her back to us. Her eyes look up, hopeful. Sang is already moving, J I need a scalpel and some d-e-x-m-e-d-e-t-o-m-i-d-i-n-e, one of you go! She signs the name again when we both look confused, and I race back the medicine bay. By the time I'm back the wolf is barely breathing. Sang takes the drug and syringe that I managed to remember and quick injects the wolf, it's breathing slows but doesn't quite stop. She then takes the scalpel from me and glances at Jess.
"Come on, you don't want to watch this!" Jess whispers and she stands passes me Sam and tugs me out of the bay.
I'm very glad, twenty miniates later that she did pull me away because Sang comes out looking like something from a horror movie covered in blood.
While Sang was in there, I couldn't help but ask about the animals that Sang had. Jess explained that this was a rescue home, and reserve for the ones that where too injured, or there homes where too unstable. Sang treated them and if they could be released into the wild, they were, if they couldn't they lived here. The pregnant animals that where in now were from a police raid on a private zoo a week ago, they had come in starved and pregnant, never a good combination! Jess muttered something else about how if they had a few more weeks of good food they would have probably been okay. She hardly looks at me all this time and when she does it with a scowl. I'm about to ask what I did.
When Sang comes out her clothes are literally stuck to her with blood but she's holding another bundle. She shifts it onto her hip enough to sign, meet Jeffery! Then she takes Samira from my arms and both the girls hurry down the corridor. I watch as Sang creates a sling out of a large blanket across her front and places both the babies securely in it, before she starts climbing, Jess right beside her.
"You coming?" Titch calls at me down to me as the girls scale the wall super quickly. I have never seen anyone as at home climbing as me before but looks like I have now! I follow trying to catch up, but even though she's carrying the two babies I don't get much closer to her before to climbs out the top.
"Oh my god!" Is all I can say to the top floor and the kitchen. If there was any doubt as to what Erica had meant yesterday, nope wait make that the day before yesterday considering it's now past midnight, I would get it now! "This is stunning!" I say to Titch who's mixing something on the stove. It looks like milk of some kind, splint into two pans. "Where's Cupcake?" I ask looking round for her and the babies.
Sang shows me how to hold the bottle and we both feed our respective babies, by the time we're done it's almost one o'clock in the morning. Sang leads me though into a room full of computers and presses a button before sliding down the opened shoot. I'm too tired to even be surprised by this. We end up back at the hospital level, both of us still holding the small animals. Sang goes through the set of doors from earlier and enters the first bay, she drops to the floor, curls up with Samira tucked into her stomach. Jeffery struggles in my arm to get to her so I gently place him next to the cheetah cub.
I stand awkwardly for a moment, unsure where to go, I turn to leave but when I do so, Sam and Jeff both call out.
"Hush!" I whisper as Jess collapses on the other side of the bay, desperate for them to not wake the exhausted blonde up.
"For god's sake, lie the heck down next to her, like you want to, or they won't shut up, Sang trusts you dammit Luke, she let you come here!" Jess hisses at me before adding, "She let you see her safe place, she's asleep in front of you for goodness' sake! She showing you trust that it took me months to get!" she sounds annoy by this, she seems to read this on my face, "Look I'm not mad, well I am, slightly, but I knew she would lo...like you straight away and you her, I just wasn't quite ready to share yet, my mum kind of sprung you..." she breaks off with a yawn, "go to sleep while you can Luke, we get up at six for feeds!" she points to the two noisy babies that quiet as I approach. When I look back at Jess, she's asleep. I warily lie next Cupcake and the cubs, not thinking that I'm going to be able to sleep, then Sang curls tighter around the babies and it brings her face almost to my neck.
Her breath fanning my shoulder I fall asleep faster than ever before, might be something to do with the exhaustion? Yeah right, who am I kidding?
Hope you really enjoyed this, as much as I enjoyed showing you Luke and Sang! (even there's sad parts in this chapter)!
