PART 52: BETRAYAL...?

A few days had passed, the weather was even colder now.
It hadn't started snowing, but it was foggy everywhere.

Giyuu was in his Estate on a cold morning. He was just looking outside the window of his bedroom quietly. It had been a while since he'd seen Sanemi.

I wonder what Sanemi's up to...
He sighed softly.

"Giyuu?"
Kanzaburou flew to him, landing on his shoulder.

"Hm...?"
Giyuu looked at his old crow.

"It's a cold morning, isn't it?"

Giyuu nodded in response.
"You're right..."

He sat on the bed, fidgeting with the charm Sanemi had given him.

"I wonder what Sanemi's doing right now..."
He exhaled softly before finally standing up.

"I want to see him."

He quickly walked out of his Estate, a fresh gush of cold wind hitting him.

So cold!
He shivered a little as he made his way to Sanemi's Estate.

"What's up this early in the morning?"
Sanemi asked as he slowly sat beside Obanai.

"I was wondering what you were doing..."
Obanai looked around Sanemi's place before his eyes met Sanemi's.

"Any missions these days?"

"Nah... It's been really boring, you know..."
Sanemi replied, scratching the back of his head.

Obanai nodded in response, he looked at his own hands as he took a deep breath in.

"How's it going with Tomioka...?"

Sanemi blushed softly at the mention of the name.

"Everything's... going well."

"I see..."
Obanai looked at the floor quietly for a while before his gaze shifted back to Sanemi.

Giyuu finally reached Sanemi's Estate. As soon as he lifted his hand up to knock on the door, he heard Obanai's voice. He stopped, curiousity written all over his face.

Iguro...?
Giyuu swallowed hard, trying to listen to what the two were talking about through the door.

"Shinazugawa..."
Obanai's voice was low, yet a little concerned.

"Yeah?"
Sanemi looked at him, a curious look on his face.

"You look a little... weak. Have you been eating properly?"
Obanai asked.

Giyuu's eyes widened.

Is he not... Keeping our promise...?
He thought.

Sanemi chuckled softly.
"I am eating..."

He paused for a while before continuing.
"...every now and then."

Giyuu gasped softly.

"What do you mean by that...?"
Obanai frowned.

"It's just..."
Sanemi rubbed the back of his neck nervously.

"It's just that I've been skipping breakfast, that's all."

"You really shouldn't do that Shinazugawa..."
Obanai advised.

"Eh... I don't know man, it has just become a habit... I've been doing that since the past few weeks."

Giyuu couldn't believe what he was hearing. He felt like he was betrayed.

Did the promise mean nothing to him...?
His breath hitched in his throat as he continued to listen to the conversation.

"For weeks? Shinazugawa... This is..."
Obanai was interrupted.

"Yeah, yeah! I know but..."
Sanemi brushed it off.

"...I don't really care."
He added.

Giyuu's eyes widened as the words hit him.

That promise... It meant nothing to him.
Even I, don't matter to him... Do I?
He felt his heart racing.

He really doesn't care...
Giyuu was more upset than angry, he turned around as he stormed off.

As soon as he reached his place, he went to his bedroom, slamming the door shut.

"You're back, Giyuu...?"
Kanzaburou asked, sitting on Giyuu's bed.

"Sanemi doesn't care about me at all..."
Giyuu fell on the bed, burrying his face into the pillow.

"What happened all of a sudden?"

Giyuu got up, looking at his crow as he grunted with frustration.

"All he knows is how to break promises!"

"Oh Giyuu, calm down..."
Kanzaburou flew closer to Giyuu, resting next to him.

"He underestimates the trust I had for him... I... I will have to teach him a lesson."

Giyuu thought for a while but he couldn't think of how he could make Sanemi regret his descision of breaking promises so easily.

After hours, Sanemi wondered what Giyuu was up to. He decided to pay him a visit.

Giyuu was still in his place, he had decided on not talking to Sanemi to teach him a lesson he would never forget.

As Sanemi reached, he slowly walked up to the door. He knocked on it, a sense of guilt washing over him. He had broken a promise, and he knew it. But the thought of Giyuu not finding out, made him a little relieved.

Could it be Sanemi now...?

Giyuu didn't answer the door at first, still sitting on the bed.
But he realised that it could be someone else, and finally decided to open it.

"Good morning Giyuu!"
Sanemi smiled warmly.

"I haven't seen you since morning, I really missed you, you know?"
He reached his hand out to cup Giyuu's cheek but he stepped back.

Sanemi's smile faded, confusion written all over his face.
"Giyuu? Everything alright?"

Giyuu looked at the ground, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Hm..." He nodded.

Sanemi could see the hurt in his eyes, and it pained him.

"What happened to you today, Giyuu? Why aren't you talking to me? Did I do something wrong?"
His voice was tinged with regret and genuine concern.

"I-It's nothing... I... I just need a break..."
Giyuu let out a deep breath.

"L-Leave me alone..."

Sanemi recoiled as if Giyuu had slapped him, his words stung more than any blade ever could.

"A break? Am I that unbearable? I-I'm sorry."
He backed away from Giyuu slowly, his eyes never leaving his.

"And here I thought we were... we..."
He blushed, trailing off.

Giyuu didn't respond, stepping further back. He swallowed hard.
"Leave me alone, Sanemi..."

Sanemi's eyes widened, his gaze flickering on Giyuu before he rubbed the back of his head awkwardly.
"Uh... Are you sure everything's okay, Giyuu?"

Giyuu didn't respond, his gaze shifting to his hands as he stood there quietly.

Looking at him, Sanemi sighed, running a hand through his hair.

"Alright, Giyuu. If that's what you want."
He turned away and began to walk away, pausing after a few steps before turning back to Giyuu.

"W-We can meet tomorrow, right?"
He smiled, his eyes filled with hope.

"I..."
Giyuu took a deep breath in.

"I'm not sure about that..."
He closed his door, walking to his room.

Sanemi stood outside the door, his heart aching at Giyuu's response. He could hear his footsteps retreating inside, and it felt like his world was crashing down around him.

"F-Fine..."
He muttered to himself before trudging away, his shoulders slumped in defeat.
