-Samantha-
I was dreading school, it wasn't because I had a test, it wasn't because I still had a substitute teacher for one of my classes. It was because I didn't know how to face who was suppose to be my best friend of sixteen years, I understood that he had reasons for lying to me or else he wouldn't have done it but that didn't make the truth of it all hurt any less.
I let out a sigh as I turned the combination lock on my locker.
"You didn't get any sleep did you, Sam?" I froze as I glanced up at Nathan. He was calmly opening his locker, but I noticed that he looked a little tired himself.
"I couldn't I was worried about you-know-who coming and getting me in my dreams, so I didn't take any of my sleeping pills," I mumbled as I quickly looked away from him.
Nathan let out a sigh, he sounded relieved, "That's good. Listen, Sam, if you happen to fall asleep in class, don't talk to him. I know you don't trust me right now, and I know you're angry but at least trust me when I say that I know, Theo. He's a master manipulator if you talk to him long enough and he finds out even one of your fears he'll make you want to sell your soul to the devil," he told me.
I frowned looking down at my feet then I looked up at Nathan, "And what are you?" I asked him softly.
He smiled slightly but it didn't have any happiness in it, "I just put people to sleep, Sam. I'll tell you more whenever your ready," he said gently. Nathan reached out to ruffle my hair but caught himself right before he did.
"Bye, Sam try not to fall asleep in class," he told me.
I frowned but waved goodbye to him. When I got to my American Literature class the substitute teacher was on her laptop this time.
Seriously? That's just trading one electronic in for another.
Victoria turned to me when I sat down behind her, "Oh my god, Sam are you okay? You look awful," she gasped.
I chuckled, "Just the opposite actually I haven't been sleeping much," I told her.
Victoria bit her lip for a second before she reached into her desk and took out a single piece of paper. She used her pen to scribble something down on it before handing the paper to me.
I looked at it to see a phone number, "What is this for?" I asked her.
She smiled, "It's in case you need someone to talk to you know like girl talk or something," she told me smiling. I smiled as I folded the piece of paper up and placed it in my pocket.
"Thank you Victoria, I'll try calling you sometime," I said.
"Oh shit, I forgot there was a test today," the substitute said as she got up.
How in the hell does the teacher forget that they gave the students a test?!
I stared at the teacher in shock as she began handing out the test. "Now, ya'll kids know the rules to taking a test right? No cheating and all that good stuff right?" She asked.
"Yes Ma'am," Everyone including myself answered her back.
"That's very good you can begin," the teacher told us.
I rolled my eyes as I picked up my test and began it. I was halfway through it when I started hearing this odd lullaby sound.
Is that the Song of Storms from the legend of Zelda? Did someone forget to turn off their phone?
However, as I heard more and more of the song my body started to feel heavier and heavier. I had trouble keeping my head up and my eyes open, I glanced at Victoria, but she seemed fine compared to me. Finally, against my wishes I fell asleep.
I was standing in a large baseball stadium in front of the whole Mushroom Kingdom. I was pitching for Mario's team on Super Mario baseball. I smiled as King Bowser, himself stepped up to bat.
However, he threw his large, black spiked club off to the side and smirked at me waving his arms, "Peaches! Oh, Peaches or should I call you, Samantha!"
I froze the baseball tumbling out of my hand and landing on the ground with a small thud. I was shocked one because Bowser didn't talk he hadn't talked until Super Mario Sunshine and that was the only time he did, the other thing that shocked me was how in the hell did he know my name?
"K-king Koopa?" I whispered.
The Bowser look alike stuck his tongue out at me, then shadows cloaked every inch of him until soon Theo stood before me. Theo squinted at me then glared up at the lights surrounding the baseball field.
"Really?" He sighed. I watched as shadows cloaked his entire form again, this time though he grew in size expanding, heightening until finally, a large black dragon stood before me. It was then I realized that even the crowd in the stadium had gone silent.
Theo let out a loud laugh, "That's right bitches bow down! The legends were true your granddaddy was right! Hah!" He laughed as swung his large tail into the lights on the baseball field.
As they came crashing down I ran into the stadium to hide. I was still running when Theo suddenly appeared in front of me looking human again.
"Sam, Samantha, why are you running?" He asked me calmly.
"Leave me alone," I told him quickly.
I imagined a large hallway closed off by a thick steel door between us. When I open my eyes it had appeared and the scenery had changed. I heard Theo chuckle from the other side of the steel door.
"Really, Sam? Doors? That's so impersonal," he told me calmly. Then I heard it, that horrible sound of twisting and grinding metal.
I saw a pair of thick black, crow like talons tear through the middle the like tissue paper. I scrambled away and imagined two more metal doors but it wasn't long before I heard the sound of them begin ripped apart too.
I bit my lip then allowed my imagination to expand and create something bigger. A town, no, a city.
I pressed myself up against the wall of the empty building, I could hear Theo talking as he looked for me.
"Sam, you know you're making things very difficult and I don't even know why. I mean first metal doors and now a sprawling metropolis? What's next a planet?" He asked.
I frowned and held my breath as I saw black, crow wings open up on his back.
"Fine, since you want to play hide and seek in all this junk I'll at least make it a bit easier," he mumbled.
Theo flapped his wings and began hovering above the ground slightly, then shadows shot out of his body from every direction like missiles. The ground began to violently shake beneath my feet and I was thrown to the ground, I let out a soft groan of pain.
"Found you, Sam."
I froze at his voice which was whispered directly in my ear. I whirled around scrambled back the whole time Theo just calmly watched me.
"Why are you acting so paranoid, Sam? I just want to talk," he told me.
I let out a shaky breath, "You ripped through three steel doors like they were paper, demolished an entire city, and caused an earthquake. If that's what you'd do to have a conversation with someone I'd hate to see what you'd do if you were angry," I whispered.
"You're simply adorable, did he tell you not to talk to me?" Theo asked slowly.
I glanced around looking for an exit, Theo took a step toward me but couldn't take another one. It was like his path was blocked off from me or something.
I looked behind me when I heard this twinkling and tingling sound, almost like a small jingle bell. I saw that the demolished buildings were disappearing and being replaced with a rainbow-colored pathway or road that was in the shape of a star. At the end, it led to a door.
I smiled slightly, "Star Road," I whispered. Star road was something that Nathan and I had done together at ten years old.
When my insomnia had started to get really bad one night Nathan stay up with me over at my house. We played Super Mario World together all night even though he had to be tired, and together we reached the hidden secret level called Star Road.
Theo squinted at me, "Star what?"
I smirked and stuck my tongue out at him which caused him to growl at me, "Fucking Noob!" I shouted at him. Then I continued down Star Road.
I woke up slowly, with my test stuck to the side of my face. I placed it on my desk before I carefully reached forward and poked Victoria's shoulder.
"Hey, Victoria since you have a class with, Nathan later can you give him a message for me?" I asked her in a hushed tone.
She nodded, "Sure what is it?" She whispered.
"Tell him, I said thank you for Star Road. He'll know what it means," I told her smiling slightly.
