Chapter 58 part 2
Prompt: 'Virgil is out at a different kingdom and gets sick/poisoned leaving him unfit to travel home. So the boys go to him'
I chose poison >:}
Welcome to part two!
This is gonna be a rollercoaster of a chapter I hope yalls is ready for it.
Hopefully, it's good and not too shitty and rushed!
I HAVE SPLIT THIS CHAPTER INTO TWO PARTS SINCE ITS SO FREAKING LONG. ITS 20,000+ WORDS. THE NEXT PART IS ALREADY DONE BUT YOU DON'T GET IT YET HEHEHE.
WARNING: poison, sickness, attempted murder, actual murder, death, low-key fighting, and a small bit of blood mentioned at one point
When Patton walked into the bedroom Logan was seated in one of the chairs and Roman was perched on the edge of Virgil's bed -which had new sheets- with a pile of fresh clothes next to him for Virgil. Virgil ended up sweating a lot, which was expected for someone with a fever, so they'd been needing to change the sheets a bit more often than they normally would be.
"Can one you help me get him dressed please?" Patton asked as he took a step further into the room.
Roman stood up from his perch with a smile, "yeah I can help, I picked out another set of pajamas for him." He said as he gestured to the small pile of clothes.
"Thanks," Patton said, returning Roman's smile.
The two of them were able to get Virgil dressed and tucked back into bed in roughly five minutes, which was a relief because Virgil had dozed off at one point while they were still getting him dressed -which may have made things more difficult but they couldn't really blame him, they really wanted to just let him sleep.
"Did anybody come by while we were in there?" Patton asked after he'd sat down in one of the chairs.
"No, not even a knock on the door." Roman said, "maybe they won't come in today? They might try in the morning."
"That's true," Patton said, "They just seemed to be in such a rush." He added with a small frown.
The rest of the evening was quiet, not a single knock on the door, not even when Vernon would usually bring Virgil tea -but that just made them even tenser, seeing as he was their main suspect.
It wasn't until they'd begun to get ready for bed that someone finally knocked.
All three of them froze for a second.
"...come in," Logan said from where he was sitting on the edge of Virgil's bed, already dressed in his pajamas, just like Roman and Patton were.
The door opened and revealed a short guy with sunny blonde curls and wide emerald eyes stood there, a small glass jar cupped in his hands.
"Sorry to disturb you so late in the evening," he said softly, "but I was told to give this to you and that it was an urgent matter for the prince's health."
"Ah, I see," Logan said while the other two stayed quiet, "what is it?"
The boy held up the glass jar in his hands, "I was told to give this to you by the head servant of my section, it's medicine for-"
"-It's not him." Patton interrupted, his eyes wide as he shot both Roman and logs a worried look, before turning back to the guy. "What's your name? Who gave that to you?"
The guy looked a little surprised, his already naturally wide eyes widening even more, "oh, my name is Wesley Porter, and Oliver Dane gave the medicine to me to give to you, he seemed to be in a hurry though, he just gave me the jar and told me to bring it to you before running off towards the stables."
"Fuck." Roman cursed softly, before rushing over to his bag and pulling the dagger he'd packed. "Logan, you stay with Virgil -don't let anybody inside this room okay?" He said, already making his way out of the door before his boyfriend could answer, shoving past Wesley in his hurry.
"I need this," Patton said as he quickly followed Roman out, snatching a dagger from the hip of one of the guards stationed outside, before taking off down the hallway with Roman.
They managed to get to the stables without running into too many people and saw two men standing next to two half prepared horses -one of them was Vernon.
They both looked up when they heard Patton and Roman burst in, and immediately dropped what they were doing and bolted towards the tree line not too far from the castle ground, not bothering with the horses anymore -and Roman and Patton raced after them.
"You follow Oliver, I've got Vernon!" Patton yelled to Roman as the two of them ran into the woods after the pair -who had almost immediately split ways after entering the trees.
"Be careful!" Roman called back, already running the other direction that Oliver had taken.
Patton ran through the trees, not caring as low hanging branches smacked him in the face, or as he almost slipped in the half-melted snow that made the earth soft and muddy and the logs wet and slippery -both not ideal for running, especially barefooted. He paid no mind to the splinters or the mud or the cold though, not caring that bushes and branches were scratching him or that rocks and sticks were scraping his feet, or the numbness in his toes from the cold -he was too focused on keeping the sight of Vernon's back within his range of vision, which was limited due to the ever-growing darkness as evening began to truly fade into the night.
He stumbled and slipped many times, but he never stopped moving, never took the time to check if he was bleeding from something, or to try and figure out where he was. If he lost sight of Vernon then he might lose the cure for Virgil -or if Vergil got better then Vernon and Oliver could try to kill him again.
He could hear the distant rushing of a river, and a small pool of dread formed in his stomach, his mind suddenly wondering if Vernon had some sort of get-away boat at the river -if he did then Patton wouldn't be able to swim after him.
He broke through the tree line near the bank of the river and saw Vernon already halfway across, waist-deep in what was undoubtedly freezing cold water.
Well, he was already freezing, so without much thought of consequences, Patton quickly ran into the water after him, hissing softly at the sharp cold that stung his skin the moment he touched the water.
The water was fast too, and without shoes he found himself slipping on algae-covered rocks, or crushing his toes on loose stones -not that he could feel it, his feet and legs already numb from the cold water. His pajamas did little to help him, except for the fact that since they were thinner than his usual clothes they wouldn't drag him down as much.
"Stop running!" Patton yelled as he reached the halfway point and Vernon was just making his way out of the river, slipping on some stones.
He didn't get an answer, so instead Patton just tried to move faster, not really caring about if he crushed his feet or not anymore -he'd gladly take a few broken toes or even his whole foot if it meant capturing Vernon so Virgil could get better.
He made it out of the water not long after Vernon and quickly began to run after him again. But he wouldn't be able to catch him at this point, not if something didn't slow Vernon down...
Reaching down Patton scooped up several branches as he ran, and began to throw them at Vernon in hopes of slowing him down.
It worked better then he'd thought because, after a minute or so of throwing branches and gathering more, he managed to hit Vernon in the back of the head just as they were entering a small clearing, which made him stumble and trip on what Patton could only assume to be a root buried in the slush-like snow.
Taking his chance Patton surged forwards and leaped onto Vernon as the other man had begun to stand up and continue forwards, the two of them crashing to the ground and immediately going into a struggle in an effort to either get away in Vernon's case or to pin the other down in Patton's case.
They rolled several times, but eventually, Patton managed to get his own back pressed against a tree while pinning Vernon's hands between his stomach and Vernon's back with one hand, and his legs as wrapped around Vernon's hips in an almost backward straddle of sorts, his shins between Vernon's thighs to keep his legs spread in an awkward and almost painful position so he couldn't kick or roll away. His other hand, the one holding the dagger, was held up to Vernon's throat, the blade it's barely close enough to touch Vernon's neck as the other man struggled and cursed.
"You can surrender now, or you can die here -either way, we'll have the antidote," Patton began, still panting heavily as he pressed the sharp blade of the dagger harder against Vernon's neck -not enough to draw blood, but enough to make him feel and realize just how serious this was, prompting him to go still and stop struggling."Seeing as you were trying to kill a person I care about, I have very few qualms with killing you in return if I need to." He added with a hiss, his voice practically dripping with venom.
"Wouldn't your prince," Vernon began, spitting the word prince as if it put a foul taste in his mouth, "be against you killing someone?"
"I'd rather him be alive and disappointed in me than dead," Patton said, tightening his grip on Vernon.
"And what if -what if there is no cure? What if we gave him an incurable poison?"
"Then I will kill you right here, right now, and make sure your death is just as slow and agonizing as Virgil's would have been," Patton said, and a small pinprick of blood began to gently roll down from where the blade was held to Vernon's neck. "But you didn't did you, there is a cure to the poison." Patton continued, "I heard you talking with Oliver in the hallway, I was there the whole time -so I know everything now."
At that Vernon scoffed and laughed, "you think you know everything? No no, there's much more at play here than just poison and murder -much more."
"What are you-"
"Patton!"
Patton looked up and saw Roman and a group of guards burst out of the tree line and into the clearing that Patton and Vernon were in. A man, who he could assume was Oliver, was bound and gagged and on one of the two horses brought with them.
Patton immediately caught Romans gaze, and a wide relieved smile spread across his boyfriends face.
In a matter of seconds, a pair of guards had rushed over and taken Vernon from him, binding and gagging him quickly and efficiently before hauling him up onto the second horse. Then Roman was suddenly there in front of him and helping Patton stand up before pulling him into a hug.
"You did such a good job Pat," he said as he squeezed Patton tightly, "you got him!"
"You got Oliver too," Patton said as he leaned into Roman's hug, wrapping his arms around his waist as he pressed his face into the crook of Roman's neck.
"Well yeah, but that's cause the idiot tripped on a log buried in the snow not long after we split up," Roman said, "then the guards showed up -Logan apparently explained everything to them- and then we began to track you guys down, you left a pretty obvious and convenient trail."
"I wasn't really focused on covering my tracks, and I wouldn't have needed to anyways."
"Which is good! Cause we were able to find you easily."
Patton laughed softly and hugged Roman tighter, before slowly pulling away. "Can we go back now? I feel like I might pass out from the adrenaline or something."
"Of course love," Roman said, quickly linking their hands together before leading him over to where the guards were securing Oliver and Vernon to the horses so they couldn't easily roll off and such.
They began the trek back to the castle not long after that, and Patton must have actually passed out at some point rather quickly, because he suddenly woke up and was on Roman's back, being carried across a small bridge over the river he'd had to wade through not long ago.
"Oh good you're awake," Roman said, and he must have felt Patton shift or heard him gasp when he woke.
"Yeah, sorry I didn't think I was actually going to faint," Patton said somewhat sheepishly.
"It's fine," Roman said, "it's actually good that I'm carrying you -you messed your feet up quite a bit, so you shouldn't be walking on them till a doctor checks them out."
"I'm sure I can walk on my own-"
"Nope! No walking for you mister," Roman said, "I'm going to carry you and that's that, so either enjoy the ride or try to take a nap."
Patton huffed softly but begrudgingly leaned his head back down onto Roman's shoulder.
He must have fallen asleep again, because the next thing he knew he was awaking up, somewhat sluggishly, wrapped in a thick blanket and comfortably laid out on a bed. He turned his head to look around and guessed that he must be in the infirmary -there were beds lining the walls with privacy curtains and several large cabinets and other medical tools throughout the room.
The bed next to his had Virgil in it, his boyfriend still pale and asleep while being bundled up just like Patton.
No one else was near them, but he could hear voices not that far away, and he vaguely wondered if it was Roman or Logan talking.
He groaned softly as he forced himself to sit up, ignoring how heavy his limbs and head felt -or how unnaturally warm it was- in favor of staying awake, since he'd surely fall back asleep if he stayed laying down and bundled up.
"Patton!"
Patton looked up and saw both Roman and Logan standing a few yards away from his bed, surprised looks on their faces.
"You shouldn't be sitting up Pat," Roman said as he quickly walked forwards and gently pushed Patton back down so that he was laying on his back again.
"Roman? Wha..?"
"Shh Patty, you got a bit sick from that dip in the river you took, and you're feet might be infected from all the cuts -luckily nothing was broken though, just badly bruised," Roman said as he pulled the covers back up and over Patton, tucking him in. "You gotta stay all bundled up though, okay? You got really cold so we need to keep you nice and warm."
"Roman is correct," Logan said as he stepped forward as well and pressed a hand to patrons forehead and oh, his fingers were nice and cool. "You have a mild fever, but it shouldn't be a problem and should pass within a day or so."
"Okay," Patton said softly, "is Virgil..."
"He hasn't been given any medicine yet," Logan said as he shook his head, "we found what we assume is the cure in one of the criminals bags, but we're having an apothecary look at a sample of both the poison and the supposed antidote to see if it is the actual antidote -if it is we'll give it to him, if it's not then they'll either make the antidote for the poison or buy it."
Patton nodded slightly, before pressing his face into Logan's hand. "Can...can I maybe..." he hesitated, chewing on his bottom lip nervously.
"What is it Patty-cake?" Roman asked.
"...can we push my bed closer to his?" He asked softly, "I just...I wanna be closer..."
"I'm sure we can do that, the beds are on wheels so it won't be too difficult." Logan said as he looked over at Roman, "would you mind unlocking the wheels on the other side?"
"Not at all," Roman said with a grin as he moved to the other side of the bed and knelt down before fiddling with the wheels.
It only took a minute for them to have them unlocked, his bed moved so it was pressed against Virgil's, and the wheels relocked.
Patton rolled over onto his side and moved as close to Virgil as he dared. He was pale, but his cheeks were still flushed red, the rest of his skin looked clammy, and his breathing was soft but a bit rough too.
"He hasn't woken up since you gave him the bath yesterday," Roman said, "not even when he was carried here and changed into fresh clothes." He added with a frown.
"I'm sure he's fine," Patton said softly, "he'll get better as soon as he has the cure."
"I'm sure he will," Logan said as he moved to the other side of Virgil's bed and sat down in the chair there, while Roman sat down on patrons bed.
"What happened with Vernon and Oliver?" Patton asked at one point.
Neither Logan nor Roman answered for several moments, which prompted Patton to look between the two of them with a frown.
"They've both, ahem, passed on," Logan said awkwardly.
"They...they were executed already?" Patton asked, his eyes wide with surprise.
"No," Roman said, "They were both found dead in their cells, we don't know how they died." He explained, "the guards stationed near them were all knocked out, and the bodies are currently being examined to try and figure out what caused the death."
"It's very concerning, especially since we weren't able to question either of them on their motives and don't know if they killed themselves or if someone else killed them."
"I...I might have an idea about that," Patton said softly, and the two of them looked at him curiously. "When I finally caught Vernon he said something, like 'you think you know everything?' And 'there's much more at play here than just poison and murder' or something similar to that." He explained, "maybe they were killed to be kept quiet? So they wouldn't slip up and reveal something important."
"That...adds a whole new level of concern, we'll need to inform the king and queen and Virgil's parents of this as soon as possible," Logan said.
"You're right," Roman said, "but for now Pat here needs to rest," he continued, "he can't get better if he's too worked up over all this -and we don't know if Vernon was lying or telling the truth when he said that."
"That's true," Logan said, "and I agree with Roman, you should try and go back to sleep Patton."
Patton frowned slightly, before slowly nodding. "...will you guys stay? You'll be here when I wake up right?"
"Of course love, we'll only leave if it's absolutely necessary," Roman said as he crawled up Patton's bed and pressed a kiss to his temple.
Patton smiled before curling up a bit, "thank you," he said with a small yawn.
"It's no problem Patty-cake."
It wasn't until two days later that they got the antidote for Virgil. Turns out Vernon and Oliver hadn't been carrying the antidote, and what they'd found was actually a different poison -they were very glad they hadn't given it to him thinking it was the cure.
Luckily the apothecary was able to whip up a dose of the antidote, which was given to Virgil the moment it was delivered. Waking him up had taken a while, and he'd been nearly unresponsive when he was awake, but they'd managed to get him to swallow the whole vial.
He looked better within hours. His skin wasn't as pale and his fever had finally eased up. He hadn't woken up yet, but he seemed much better overall.
They'd sent word to Corona to tell his parents that he was getting better, but that they didn't know when he'd be fit to travel, and had gotten the response that they'd have a ship ready and waiting to send to them when they deemed him well enough for the trip.
It was a major relief to everyone when he woke up on his own on the third day of being given the antidote.
"What happened?" Virgil asked, his voice still a little hoarse. He was propped up on his bed with a mountain of pillows to support him, his blanket bunched up around his waist.
"Well, what all do you remember?" Roman asked from his seat at the foot of Virgil's bed.
"Um, not much," Virgil admitted, "it's all a blur for the most part -but I remember when you guys showed up, and I think singing? I'm not sure."
"Ah, well I don't think it'd be a good idea to overwhelm you with all the details so soon after you've woken-" Logan began.
"Please?" Virgil interrupted, "I want to know what happened."
Logan paused, and exchanged a glance between Roman and Patton before sighing softly, "I suppose you have a right to know." He said softly, before sitting up a bit straighter.
"You didn't return home on the day you were due to come back from the trip, which lead to the worry of your parents and us. Apparently a letter had been sent but we didn't receive any word from you for nearly two weeks -we had sent our own letters, but had received no response. Then we finally got a letter, explaining that you had fallen terribly ill and were unfit to travel home -so your parents agreed to send the three of us and more guards to stay with you here and assess the situation." He explained. "When we arrived you were bedridden and had been for quite some time apparently, but you still woke up when prompted, could have conversations, and ate enough of your food to get by."
"We assumed foul play was afoot though, seeing as you had fallen so terribly ill in such a short span of time, so we began to grow cautious -you only ate or drank things that we prepared, and we disposed of anything else that was brought to you. Which includes the tea that was brought to you during the day." He continued. "We assumed the tea to be what had the poison, and began to investigate further -eventually Patton overheard a pair of servants talking in the halls about you and your condition, stating that you should have already been dead given the amount of poison you should have been consuming from the tea. They realized the three of us must have caught on and had stopped giving you the tea, so they decided to disguise a larger dose of the poison as medicine for us to give to you to finish the job -but since Patton had overheard them we already knew this and were prepared."
"What we weren't prepared for was them being more cautious then we expected -they ended up sending an innocent servant in with the poison, while the two of them made their escape on horses in the stables. Thankfully Patton and roman ran to catch them while I stayed with you, and after a long bout of running through the woods and apparently across a river they were both able to capture the two servants. But not even a day after their arrest they were somehow killed in their cells before their could be interrogated."
"Luckily we had a dose of the poison you'd been given, and an apothecary was able to analyze it and create the antidotes which we gave to you roughly three days ago. That should be everything."
"That's...that's a lot," Virgil said softly as his brain tried to absorb and process the information. "What about the singing?"
"That's not what I expected you to ask about," Logan said, before a small smile formed on his lips, "both Patton and Roman sang to you at some point when they were helping to give you a bath."
Virgil's cheeks flushed brightly from embarrassment and he huffed softly, "now I know I shouldn't be embarrassed -you've all seen me naked before- but I am and I regret everything except for the fact that I got to hear you both sing at some point and that I wasn't hallucinating the singing."
"There's nothing to regret if nothing was your fault," Patton said, "and I'm sure Roman can sing you a song again whenever -I'm not that good at it so it's probably best if he does the singing."
"From what I can remember you sang wonderfully Pat -something about flowers?"
"Something like that, yeah."
"I'm sure I could convince Patton to sing with me in the future, maybe I'll even drag Logan into it," Roman said with a grin.
"I doubt that," Logan said as he adjusted his glasses.
"Oh, I'll rope you into it somehow -maybe I'll bribe you with Patton's blackberry crumble,"
"You seem to forget that I can make Pattons blackberry crumble -he gave me the recipe."
"Damn, I thought I had leverage with that," Roman mumbled, earning a laugh from both Patton and Virgil.
Virgil opened his mouth to say something, but was cut off by a somewhat loud gurgle-like coming from his stomach, and his cheeks flushed once more from embarrassment.
"I, um, guess I'm a bit hungry, and the mention of blackberry crumble did help that."
"You have been eating less lately, but a good portion of your appetite should have returned by now -you might be able to eat 2/3rds of a bowl of soup."
"Oh! Roman and I can go make something for us to eat! It's almost dinner time anyway." Patton piped up with a bright smile. "We'll make something extra special to celebrate you waking up and getting better."
"Nothing too fancy," Logan said as the pair stood up, "he needs to be able to actually eat it and keep it down, his stomach can't handle anything super heavy."
"Okay!" Patton said, before eagerly dragging Roman out of the infirmary.
Logan sighed softly but had a fond smile on his face, though he looked tired.
"How have you guys been?" Virgil asked, his voice soft. "Please be honest."
"It's...it's been stressful. Your health just kept getting worse and we didn't have any legitimate leads until just recently. We're in a foreign kingdom, so we didn't have anyone else to rely on except the Coronian guards and they couldn't do much either." He said as he ran his fingers through his own hair, "I...I thought you were actually going to die at one point. We couldn't wake you up and your breathing was so shallow..." he slowly reached forward, and Virgil immediately took his hand, squeezing it tightly.
"I promise I'm not going anywhere okay? I'm here and you guys were able to get the cure and save me," he said, "I don't know how I'll ever be able to repay you for it."
"There's nothing for you to repay," Logan said as he squeezed Virgil's hand gently. "You're not indebted to us just because we saved you."
"...alright."
They sat in comfortable silence for a few seconds, before Logan shifted a bit.
"You probably feel kind of gross, it's been three days since you've had a bath and you were sweating a lot from your fever." He said, "would you like my help to take a bath?"
Virgil blushed slightly but nodded, a small smile on his lips. "A bath sounds like a good idea." He agreed.
"Alright, I'm assuming you still need help getting there."
"If you don't mind."
"Not at all."
Logan carefully picked Virgil up after pulling his blankets away -despite being awake and talking Virgil's body wasn't strong enough to stand and walk on his own yet.
He carried him to one of the nearby bathrooms set up for long-term patients, and set him down on a small stool next to the tub.
"Do you need help getting undressed?" He asked.
"Maybe a little," Virgil admitted somewhat sheepishly.
"Alright," Logan said as he knelt down and began to unbutton Virgil's shirt before carefully sliding it off his shoulders. He then moved on to Virgil's pants and boxers, carefully undressing him before picking him up and putting him in the empty tub.
"I'll go get you a fresh set of clothes while the tub fills okay?" Logan said as he dusted the nonexistent dirt off of his knees.
"Okay," Virgil said as he shifted a bit to get comfortable.
"I'll also get an extra towel for you to use as padding for your neck," he said as he turned the water on, making sure it wasn't too hot or cold, "just yell if you need me, I'll be right back."
Finding a fresh set of clothes and the towels was easy, everything was stored in large cabinets that were helpfully labeled along the wall outside of the bathrooms, so he was gone for less than a minute.
When he returned the water wasn't even half full, so he went about making sure Virgil was comfortable, and folded up one of the towels for him to use as a pillow of sorts.
"Is everything all good? Do you want it warmer or colder?"
"It's perfect the way it is," Virgil said, "except maybe some bubbles? I think those would be fun." He added somewhat sheepishly.
"I can probably find something to add," Logan said with a smile, before moving over to the small cabinet below the sink nearby.
He found some soaps, with a soft but sweet lilac scent, which he added to the tub as it continued to fill, and the sweet floral scent filled the room as bubbles quickly began to cover every inch of water.
"Thank you," Virgil said softly as he relaxed back into the tub, tilting his head to rest on the towel Logan had folded and placed there for him to rest his head against.
"It's no problem at all," Logan said with a dismissive wave of his hand, "would you like to make this a quick bath, or are you comfortable relaxing in the water for awhile?" He asked.
"...I think I'd like to stay in the water for awhile if that's okay with you," Virgil said after a moment of thought.
"Of course -do you want me to stay?"
"Please?"
"Of course love."
They settled into a comfortable silence, and Logan began to wash Virgil's hair -pouring a generous amount of soap into his hand before massaging it into Virgil's scalp. It felt nice, and he relaxed even further as Logan continued for much longer than was probably necessary.
"Hey Logan," Virgil began sometime later, his voice soft.
"Yes?"
"Can you...or, um, will you sing me a song?" Virgil asked, tilting his head to look over at him.
"Sing a song?" Logan asked, his hands pausing from where they were still massaging Virgil's scalp. "I'm not sure about that, singing isn't my strong suit."
"I've heard you sing before and you sound lovely," Virgil argued, "you don't have to if you don't want to, but I'd love to hear you sing."
Logan was silent for a few moments before he sighed softly. "I suppose I don't mind singing you a song, just a short one though." He said as he gave Virgil a small smile.
Virgil smiled back, "thank you," he said before shifting his position a bit to be more comfortable before relaxing again.
Logan took a moment to think of a song he knew, before taking another small deep breath.
"Follow me," he began, his voice soft and almost shy, "Where the forest meets the sand, and as you look toward the sky,
You'll see them soaring..."
"Wings spread wide
As the wind pulls them along,
And as they fly with pride,
You'll hear them start to sing:" he picked up a small cup near the edge of the tub, and dipped it into the water as he continued to sing, letting it fill before gently nudging Virgil to move a bit away from the rim of the tub.
" 'Oh won't you follow me,
Where the beaches meet the sea
And when you spread your wings
The wind will take you away'..." he sang as he carefully poured the water over Virgil's head, making sure none of it went near his eyes or the rest of his face as he did.
"Follow me,
To the cliffs that catch the waves,
Just take a running start,
And listen to them sing:" he gently massaged at Virgil's scalp as he scooped up more water into the cup, needing more to get all the soap out.
" 'Oh won't you come with me
Where the ocean meets the sun
Watch as the sky turns gold
The waves will show you the way'..." he ran his fingers through Virgil's hair to help wash out the soap, smiling when his boyfriend leaned into the touch with a small hum.
"Follow me,
As you walk through the air,
With your wings spread out wide,
You'll listen to them sing:" he finished rinsing all the soap out of Virgil's hair, and put the cup down in exchange for a small wash rag that he dipped into the water as well.
" 'Oh won't you come with me
Where the ocean mirrors the moon
And where the stars float in the foam
The clouds will show you the way'..." he began rubbing at the skin of Virgil's back, gently nudging his boyfriend so that he'd turn around and lean forwards so that Logan could wash the skin there.
"Follow me,
Back where the forest meets the sea,
Land gently on the sand,
And listen to them sing:" he moved the rag up Virgil's back, and may or may not have allowed his hands to wander a few times, his fingers pressing into Virgil's hips and against his waist before getting back to work again.
" 'Will you come back to me?
Where the beaches meet the sea,
Come back and fly with me
On another sunny day'. " he softly finished the song as he dipped the rag back into the water for a second before pressing it to Virgil's upper back.
"That was pretty," Virgil said softly.
"Thank you," Logan said as he rubbed the rag against Virgil's shoulders, "it's a song my mother would sing to my sister when we were kids."
"But not to you?" Virgil asked as he tilted his head to glance over at him.
Logan paused for a second before answering, "no, not for me." He said with a small shake of his head, his voice almost hesitant.
Virgil hummed thoughtfully, a small frown on his lips, "I'm sure you sound much better than she does anyways."
"I'm not so sure about that," Logan said with a soft chuckle as he pressed the rag to the crook of Virgil's neck.
"Well I'm plenty certain that you do," Virgil argued, "and I'd love to hear you sing again sometime." He added.
"We'll see." Was all Logan said, but Virgil caught sight of a small flush marking his taller boyfriend's cheeks.
Logan continued to help Virgil wash up, but it wasn't until nearly twenty minutes later that they actually finished. To be fair they spent plenty of time idly chatting and taking their time in general, since they weren't in any sort of rush.
"Come on now, we should get you dried off and dressed before Patton and Roman come back," Logan said as he reached into the water and pulled the plug so it could drain.
"Okay," Virgil said with a nod, "can we, um, can we cuddle after?" He asked.
"Of course," Logan said as he gave Virgil a smile before standing up.
He carefully helped Virgil to stand up before wrapping him in the towel, "do you want to get dressed in here or out there on the bed?" He asked.
"In here please," Virgil said, his cheeks flushing from embarrassment. "And I think I can get my shirt on by myself."
"Alright, but if you need help just let me know."
Virgil did manage to get his shirt on by himself, and soon he was fully clothed and once again propped up against a mound of pillows on his bed.
"Cuddles?" He asked as he looked over at Logan.
"In just a moment, I need to get you some more medicine that you need to take before you eat, then we can cuddle."
"Okay," Virgil said with a nod, before allowing himself to sink back into the pillows and relax a bit.
Lohan came back with a cup of tea a few minutes later, a small frown on his face. "I know it's not ideal, but a drink is the best way to take the medicine, it's a powder that tastes awful in just water, but isn't too noticeable in sweet teas." He explained, "hopefully it's not too much of a problem."
"It's not a problem at all," Virgil said as he sat up some and took the cup from him carefully, "you prepared it right?"
"Of course, no one else touched it," Logan assured.
Virgil nodded and began to drink. The tea was very sweet, like sugary raspberries, but had an almost awful, bitter aftertaste that lingered in the back of his throat. He finished the drink quickly, not wanting to be stuck drinking it for long, and only passed the cup back to Logan when he finished.
"Alright, you mentioned wanting some cuddles correct?" Logan asked as he set the cup down on the small side table, an almost playful smile on his face.
"Yes please," Virgil said as he quickly shifted to the side of the bed to make room for Logan. "Can I sit in your lap?"
"Sure," Logan said as he carefully climbed into the bed and made himself comfortable, before gesturing for Virgil to come to him.
Virgil eagerly climbed into his boyfriend's lap and pressed his face to the crook of his neck, a small hum escaping from his lips when Logan pulled the covered up a bit and wrapped his arms around Virgil's waist.
"Comfortable?" Logan asked, his voice soft and Virgil could practically hear the smile on his lips.
"Very," Virgil said as he snuggled closer to him, curling up tighter.
"I'm glad," Logan said, "just try not to fall asleep, Patton and Roman should be back with dinner soon."
Virgil nodded and simply hummed, pressing a smile to Logan's skin when he felt his boyfriend's hand trail up and down his spine.
Roman and Patton came back not even five minutes later, but Virgil had still managed to fall asleep in the short amount of time. They'd woken him after they'd gotten the food set up and ready, and brushed off his flushed apologies.
"Thank you again for taking care of me," Virgil said as he took a sip of his soup -Roman and Patton had put his portion into a cup since he probably wouldn't be able to eat with a spoon without spilling still.
"We already told you there's no need to thank us, love," Patton said, "there's nothing for you to repay either." He added.
"...okay," Virgil said, a small pout on his lips that he hid behind his mug.
"Well there's one thing you could do," Roman pipped up, ignoring the two warning looks Patton and Logan gave him when he saw Virgil perk up a bit.
"What is it?"
"Roman-"
"It's a simple request," Roman interrupted with a grin, "as a thank you to us, what you can do Virgil, is get better."
Virgil almost immediately deflated, the pout back on his lips, "that's not- I can't- ugh, it's not like I'm going to immediately get sick again- that's no way to repay you for-"
"I didn't finish," Roman said, holding up a finger as he smirked at him, "what you can do is get better, so that we can, ahem, lavish you in a different type of love and care -if you're interested that is."
Virgil's cheeks immediately flushed at Roman's words, and he would have accidentally dropped his mug of soup of Logan hadn't moved to gently take it from him seconds before.
"...if I get to be the one who's, um, lavishing you guys with love then I can see how that could be considered repaying you."
"Ah ah, nope -it won't be as repayment." Roman said, "if we do anything like that it's because you want to -not because you feel obligated to." He said sternly. "Just being with you is more than enough, we don't need to do anything like that if it's just an obligation."
"No no that's not what I meant," Virgil said, shaking his head, "I want it to be my turn taking care of you three since you took care of me -I want to do it because I want to make you feel good, not because I feel obligated to," Virgil said, his cheeks flushing brightly.
"Well nothing of the sort is going to be happening until you're better and we're all back at Corona -and Roman stop making him so flustered, the blood rushing to his head might make him faint." Patton cut in.
"I'm sure his face isn't the only place blood is rushing to-"
"Roman!"
Virgil muffled a laugh behind his hand as he leaned back against Logan, carefully taking his mug back before taking a sip of the soup. "When are we going back home?" He asked.
"As soon as your fit for travel, your parents already have a boat waiting to send when we send word that you're well enough for the trip," Logan explained.
"How long will that be?" Virgil asked.
"I'd say at least three more days, two if we're lucky and you recover quickly."
"Ah, okay," Virgil said before taking another sip of his soup.
They all quickly finished their food and a servant came along and gathered up the dishes they'd used. Roman, Logan, and Patton had all basically made the corner of the infirmary Virgil was in their own, seeing as they'd brought some of their stuff down and had been sleeping down there ever since he'd been moved to there from his previous room.
The next few days went by quickly, and Virgil steadily gained his strength back. Obviously, he was nowhere near top condition, but he could walk to the bathroom and back without help now, and he could use a fork and spoon again. A letter was sent home to say they were ready to return, and the ship arrived the next day to pick them up.
The king and queen of this kingdom had apologized profusely and had offered many means of compensation, but Virgil insisted all of that was up to his parents, and that they should take it up with them since they were so insistent.
A room was ready for the three of them on the ship, stocked with what medical supplies they could need and plenty of blankets and pillows.
Virgil was soon brought onto the ship and comfortably tucked into the large bed with Patton at his side while Logan and Roman took care of a few things. He may have needed help since the walk to the docks from the infirmary had been long -he'd gotten too nauseous when he'd tried to take a carriage, an apparent side effect from the medicine, which made him almost dread the boat ride back home if he felt that bad from getting in a carriage then what would a boat feel like?
He already felt a little sick, just laying in the bed. They were still docked and everything, so there weren't even any waves yet -he was not excited for this trip.
"Ah-ha! I found it!" Patton said triumphantly from where he'd been digging in a box of supplies across the room.
"What did you find?" Virgil asked as he turned over onto his side to look over at him, curling up a bit.
"A hot water bottle," Patton said, "it should help you if you feel sick or if your stomach hurts, and it can keep you warm since this room is much colder than the ones in the castle." He explained, "can I go fill it up, or would you rather I wait until Roman or Logan get back?"
"You can go fill it up," Virgil said after a moment of hesitation, "I'll be fine on my own."
"Hm, if you're sure," Patton said, "I'll only be gone a few minutes okay? The guards and I will be within at least yelling distance if you need anything though, don't hesitate to call." He said.
"I won't Pat, don't worry," Virgil said with a reassuring smile.
Patton nodded and pressed a quick kiss to Virgil's forehead before leaving the room.
Not even two minutes later Roman walked in, gently knocking on the door frame before stepping inside.
"We're about ready to shove off, how're you feeling?" He asked as he moved to sit at the foot of Virgil's bed.
"Like I'm not going to have a fun time," Virgil said with a small pout.
"Ah, well hopefully we can find some ways to lessen nausea along the way," Roman said with an apologetic smile, "I'm sure there's some sort of tea or food that can help."
"Probably," Virgil said, "Pattons filling a hot water bottle, he said that might help."
"It probably will, especially if you hold it to your stomach -it'll also help you sleep."
Virgil hummed softly as he nodded, "probably," he said before glancing over at him, "are you, um, free right now?"
"How so?" Roman asked, his head tilting curiously.
"Well I uh, I wanted to know if you could cuddle for a bit," he began, a sheepish look on his face, "But if you're busy then it's okay! Or if you just don't want to right now that's okay too!" He quickly added.
Roman laughed softly and stood up from his spot with a stretch, "I'm more than willing to cuddle right now," he said, "you don't need to be shy about asking." He added as he slipped his shoes and coat off.
"I know, it just feels kinda weird asking you for things after you guys took care of me," Virgil mumbled as he shifted over to make room for Roman on the large bed. The movement was unnecessary, but he did it anyway.
Roman sighed softly, "baaabe, we talked about this," he said with a pout as he climbed into the bed next to Virgil, "we took care of you because we care for you and wanted to make sure you were safe, you don't owe us anything for that and you can still ask for things like normal, it's fine okay?" He said as he let Virgil snuggle close and press up against his chest, wrapping his arms around him when he was comfortable, and went still.
"Yeah, okay," Virgil said as he tucked his head under Roman's chin, moving one of his hands to rest on his boyfriend's hip at the same time.
"I got the hot water bottle!" Patton said with a grin as he walked into the room, his grin widening at the sight of Roman and Virgil cuddling on the bed. "And we've officially set off, so just in time." He added as he walked over to the side of Virgil's bed.
"Yay," Virgil mumbled softly, before tiredly reaching up for the bottle, which Patton happily gave him.
It was pleasantly warm to the touch, and he eagerly brought it down and pressed it to his stomach, a small hum escaping from him as he relaxed, even more, the warmth smooth his stomach already.
"Hopefully it helps," Patton said as he sat down on the edge of the bed, bringing his legs up to sit criss-cross as he did. "Logan should be down soon too, he's just talking to some people real quick."
"Okay," Virgil said, shifting in Roman's hold for a moment before looking back over at Patton, "wanna cuddle?" He asked.
"Sure," Patton said with a bright smile before he climbed up to the side of the bed Virgil's back was facing, crawling under the covers and happily wrapping his arms around Virgil's hips, gently pressing the hot water bottle against his stomach.
"Try to take a nap love, before your nausea gets too bad," Roman said as he pressed a kiss to Virgil's temple.
"Okay," Virgil said with a hum, as he pressed his face against the warm skin of Roman's neck, closing his eyes, "will...will one of you be here when o wake up?" He asked quietly.
"Yes, I can promise you that at least one of us will be here," Roman said as he shifted closer to him.
Virgil nodded and let himself relax between them, a small smile on his lips.
He ended up dozing off rather quickly and woke up a few hours later still tucked between Roman and Patton. He could hear Romans gently snoring and could feel Patton's face pressed into his own shoulder blades, so he assumed that both of them were asleep.
The soft sound of a page-turning caught his attention from across the room, and he carefully lifted his head to look over Roman's shoulder.
Logan was sitting in a chair next to the bed, a thick book sitting in his lap. He had no idea what time it was, but the orange light seeping in through the window hinted that it was most likely evening and that the sun was setting.
"Hi," he said softly, and he internally winced at how rough his voice sounded.
Logan looked up from his book and smiled at him, "hello," he said as he adjusted his glasses, "how're you feeling?"
"Kinda thirsty, but not too nauseous," Virgil said.
"I have a kettle boiling in the room next door, I was planning on making you some tea for your stomach, would you prefer honey ginger, honey lemon, or chamomile?" He asked as he gently closed his book and set it on the bedside table.
"The honey lemon one sounds good," Virgil said.
"Alright," Logan said as he stood up, "can you wake the two of them up? It's almost dinner time." He added as he leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to Virgil's forehead.
"I can do that."
"Thank you," Logan said before he left the room, promising to be back soon.
Virgil let himself bask in the warmth of two of his boyfriends for a few more moments before sitting up with a small groan. The movement alone was enough to make both Patton and Roman stir, which meant they weren't deeply asleep, so it wouldn't be too difficult to wake them.
He started with Roman first, pressing a kiss to his forehead.
"Roman, it's time to get up love," he said softly as he gently shook his shoulder, a smile spreading across his lips when Roman groaned and the arm still looped around Virgil's waist tightened. "Come on love, it's almost dinner time."
He watched as Roman begrudgingly opened his eyes and peered up at him, "we can skip dinner and sleep instead," he said before pressing his face into Virgil's side, his chin against his hip.
"Then we'd wake up in the middle of the night and be hungry," Virgil argued, "and I don't know about you, but I don't want to walk around the ship at night."
"I'd be there to protect you."
"That's true I suppose," Virgil said, "but you still need to g eat up -I'll give you kisses." He teased.
"...how many?"
"As many as you can steal before I need to wake up Pat," Virgil said with a laugh.
"I can agree to that," Roman said before he sat up and stretched with a quiet groan.
Then he turned to Virgil and gently cupped his cheeks, "nothing big okay, maybe a little make out if it's short." Virgil said, and Roman nodded with a grin before pressing their lips together with a hum.
Virgil closed his eyes and happily kissed him back, draping his arms across his shoulders.
Roman pulled back and kissed him again, and again, and again, until Virgil found himself laying on his back with Roman bent over him, his bottom lip caught between his boyfriend's teeth.
The next time roman pulled back Virgil moved his hand to tangle in his boyfriend's hair, smiling up at him, "I gotta wake up Pat now," he said, his voice a little breathless.
"One more," Roman asked with a small pout.
"One more." Virgil nodded in agreement, and then Roman was on him again, his lips capturing Virgil's in an almost dizzying kiss, biting at his bottom lip and humming softly.
He pulled away not long after, and Virgil took a few seconds to catch his breath before sitting up again.
"Want me to help you wake Pat?" Roman asked as he looked over at their still slumbering boyfriend, who had his face pressed to Virgil's thigh now that he was sitting up and his arms loosely wrapped around Virgil's waist, his hands gripping the fabric of Virgil's shirt as well.
"If you want to, sure," Virgil said with a shrug as he gently carded his fingers through Patton's curls.
Roman smiled and moved to the other side of the bed so he could be on Patton's other side.
Virgil watched as he leaned down and pressed a kiss to Patton's temple, and smiled when Patton hummed softly and pressed his face harder against Virgil's thigh.
"Hey patty-cake," Roman said softly as he shifted to press a kiss to Patton's exposed cheek, "you gotta wake up, it's almost dinner time."
"Warm..." Patton mumbled softly, not moving from his position as he tightened his hold around Virgil's hips.
"You can still cuddle, you just gotta be awake." Roman said, "and you can get some kisses if you're awake." He added as he pressed another kiss to the line of Patton's jaw.
"I'm getting kisses right now," Patton said as he turned his head to look up at Roman and Virgil, his eyes half-lidded.
"You can get more kisses and proper ones," Roman said as Virgil continued to gently card his fingers through Patton's hair and massage his scalp, his smile growing when Patton leaned his head back into the touch.
"Hmm, I suppose," Patton said, before letting go of Virgil and sitting up with a yawn as he stretched a bit.
"Thank you patty-cake," Roman said with a smile as he cupped Patton's cheek, "here are some kisses, as promised," he added, before leaning forwards and pressing his lips to Pattons, who happily wrapped his arms up and around Romans neck as he eagerly kissed him back with a pleased hum.
Virgil, deciding that it would probably be okay, leaned over and pressed a few gentle but open mouth kisses to Patton's neck, and he could feel the shiver that went down Patton's spine a second later.
He continued to press kisses along the line of his neck, since Patton hadn't told him to stop and seemed to be liking it, sometimes moving up towards his jaw, or sinking low towards his collarbone. A hand moved and tangled itself in Virgil's hair, and he hummed softly before gently nipping at a spot where he could feel Patton's hammering pulse.
He heard a few soft moans from Patton and felt the vibrations from them when he kissed his throat, but the sound was mostly muffled and swallowed up by Roman as he continued to give Patton kiss after kiss after kiss.
"I see you got them both up."
Virgil pulled away, looking up, and saw Logan standing in the doorway, a metal teapot in one hand and four mugs hooked onto the fingers of his other hand.
"I really only woke up Roman, he's the one who woke Pat," Virgil said as he sent Logan a smile, which his taller boyfriend returned.
"Well the goal was to get them both up, and that has been achieved," he said as he crossed the room and put the pot and mugs down on the bedside table, "although I'm not sure how much of that stuff you should do, you don't want to strain yourself since you're still recovering." He added.
Roman pulled back from where he'd still been kissing Patton, bother of their lips flushed pink -but Pattons were darker, and looked like there were small indents from biting."It was just a couple kisses Lo, it's not like we tried anything 'too strenuous' -that'll come later." Roman said, flashing Virgil a smirk at the end of his sentence that had Virgil blushing a bright crimson.
"Not until he's cleared by a nurse it won't," Logan said, "do either of you want tea?" He asked.
"I'll take some, what kind is it?" Patton asked as he adjusted his glasses.
"Honey lemon," Logan said as he began pouring the tea into the mugs, filling all four of them when Roman agreed to have some as well.
The tea really did help with Virgil's stomach, which had begun to churn and cramp a few minutes not long after he'd finished his tea. Luckily it kicked in quickly and he was feeling better by the time dinner was brought to them. It was a light soup, but was quite flavorful and tasted really good with the soft cheesy bread that was brought with it.
He spent most of the trip home sleeping, but Logan encouraged him to walk around the ship a bit when he was awake since he'd been bedridden for a long while and needed to work his s muscles and start regaining his strength. At least one of them accompanied him on his walks, and when he was napping at least one of them would nap with him, either holding him tight to their chest or pressing their own faces tightly to his.
The day the ship docked at the port in Corona was a buzz of activity. A carriage was brought for them and Virgil managed to ride in it without getting too nauseous, and when they arrived at the castle he was instantly whisked away into the infirmary, where he was checked over by several doctors and nurses, who were also grilling Logan, Roman, and Patton for details of his previous condition and symptoms as well. He was eventually dubbed well enough to not need to stay in the infirmary, but he was given a list of things to take and do to get himself back to full health, the medical staff basically forcing the other three to make sure he did the things on the list.
Then his mother and father were there, hugging him while asking how he was and that they were so sorry they couldn't have gone to him and such for and such forth.
It was really overwhelming, all the bustling activity and so many people talking to him and touching him -even if it was just an examination it made his skin crawl and his breathing speed up. But luckily Logan chimed in that they should get Virgil to his room just as he was beginning to feel a little too overwhelmed and lightheaded. His parents and the few nurses still checking him over quickly agreed, with a few parting words and wishes of getting better.
He couldn't quite remember who it was, but one of the three of them took him by the hand and lead him up to his room as he began to take deep breaths to try and calm down some.
When he got to his room his turned all the lights off and only opened the curtains a tiny bit, the light had been hurting his eyes and making his head pound from the headache that was steadily forming.
"Do you wanna take a nap or take a bath or something?" Patton asked as he put his bag down -he, Roman, and Logan had insisted on carrying their personal bags up themselves. Virgil's bag was still being checked for any signs of any other poison, but when that was done they'd return it to him.
"I'd rather take a nap for now, but I'm up for a bath later," Virgil said as he walked over to his wardrobe. "Do you guys want to join me? You don't have to."
"I'm up for joining you," Roman said while Patton and Logan nodded in agreement.
Virgil nodded and pulled out some of the pajama sets that they had each put into his wardrobe -they spent so much time in each other's rooms that they'd decided to move some of their clothes to make things easier.
He was able to change on his own with little problems and was soon cuddled up between Roman and Patton, his face pressed to the crook of Roman's neck with Patton snuggled up close to Virgil's back with his arms wrapped around his waist and his knees curled up the same way as Virgil's were. Logan was on the other side of Roman and had an arm draped across the three of them, the calm of his hand just barely resting on Patton's hip.
"How are you feeling?" Logan asked as he pulled the covers up and over them.
"Better," Virgil said with a hum as he shifted closer to Roman, pressing a kiss against his throat.
"Good, if anything changes please let us know," Logan said.
"I will," Virgil mumbled as finally closed his eyes and let his body sink into the mattress and melt into the warmth of his boyfriends around him, taking comfort in the familiar smelling sheets and pillows, like sweet honeysuckles with a few other hints that he couldn't quite name when they were all mixed together. It was nice and helped the buzzing anxiety in his mind to slow down to an almost inaudible hum, his body beginning to feel floaty as he began to drift off.
He'd end up sleeping through dinner and would eat a midnight snack with his boyfriends later that night before they took a bath with plenty of bubbles and lingering hands, moving at their own leisurely pace in the quiet darkness.
It was much later night, or you could even consider it early that next morning when he found himself going back to sleep, he cuddled up to Logan's chest with his face pressed right between his boyfriends surprisingly soft yet also semi-firm pecs.
"I love you." He mumbled and smiled as he heard loving proclaims of the same statement from his boyfriends, some of them whispered between forehead kisses and cheek kisses, and some boldly spoken out into the darkness.
He fell asleep easy, his eyes slipping closed and allowing him to drift off with little resistance. He was steadily getting better, and he had the people he loved around him and was back home where it was safe -he couldn't ask for anything else at the moment.
