For Forever (Demus)

Well, we're back. We've not been here for a while. And is it any surprise that this is a Demus song-fic? No, it's not, let's go! Also, this is set in the 80's cause this song just gives me 80's vibes.
Song above if you want to listen to it.

End of May or early June
This picture-perfect afternoon we shared

"Hey, Rem, wait up!" Janus called, peddling hard on his bike to try and catch up with the other boy. Remus shot Janus a glance over his shoulder before laughing and speeding up.

"Hey, no fair!" Janus yelled.

"All's fair in love and war, Jan!" Remus yelled, speeding by houses and trees. "Last one to the ice cream shop pays!"

"That's no fair, you know I'm broke!"

Remus laughed, throwing his head back and veeringly wildly off-course. "Then I guess you'd better speed up, Jan!"

Drive the winding country road

The houses fell away soon, giving way to wide open fields and lakes. Janus slowed for just a minute to take in the view.

Roaring hills of green and gold, a gaping sky bluer than Janus had ever seen in his life. Not a single cloud save some spun, white cotton candy so light it floated in the air. Trees and flowers in full bloom, the last dying cherry blossom decorating the pavements like confetti at a party.

"Hey! Jan!" Remus called, stopping his bike clumsily and yelling over his shoulder. "You good?"

"Yeah! Yeah, I'm fine." Janus called back, staring at the view with wide eyes. "Just... wow."

There was a skid of bike wheels and then Remus' voice from beside him. "It's a pretty view, isn't it?" Remus asked.

"Pretty isn't the right word for it." Janus said, his voice full of awe. "Majestic, magnificent, beautiful, glorious... those are all the right words."

Remus smiled at him fondly - a smile Janus didn't see as he was too captivated by the view - and patted him on the shoulder.

"C'mon, I'll pay for the stupid ice cream." He said, grinning. "Let's go."

Grab a scoop at À La Mode

"Can I have two scoops of chocolate in a waffle cone and... Jan, what d'you want?" Remus asked, tilting his head towards his friend. When Janus didn't answer, he looked around. "Jan?"

Janus was standing outside the shop, by the bikes. Remus looked at the person at the counter apologetically. "One sec." He ran out to the front of the shop. "Hey, Janus!"

Janus looked up quickly, balling his hands up in fists behind his back. "Yeah?"

"What ice cream d'you want?" Remus asked.

"Um, honeycomb, please." Janus said, smiling nervously. Remus nodded.

"Cool. One scoop or two?"

"Just one." Janus said, pulling his hair-tie out of his ponytail and running a hand through his hair.

"Cool, got it." Remus grinned at Janus before popping back into the shop.

And then we're there

"We're here!" Remus declared, throwing his bike down by a tree.

"Rem, you've got ice cream all over your face." Janus said, laughing a little. He leaned his bike against the tree and looked out at the field. "Woah." He breathed.

An open field that's framed with trees

"Pretty cool, huh." Remus said, grinning. Janus stared at the expanse of knee-high grass, framed with trees of all sorts.

"Cool doesn't cut it, this is amazing." He said. Remus laughed and grabbed Janus' hand.

"C'mon, let's go find somewhere nice to sit." He said, pulling Janus away and firmly ignoring the blush on his own face.

We pick a spot and shoot the breeze
Like buddies do

"This is my favourite tree in the whole field." Remus said decidedly, sitting down and leaning against a tree trunk.

"Why?" Janus asked. He sat down next to Remus and, with a lot of hesitation, put his hand down on top of Remus'. Remus looked down at their hands and swallowed, pink hinting his ears.

"It's just really nice." Remus said. "First tree I actually climbed. Easy as pie now."

Janus laughed a little. "I don't think I could do that." He said.

Quoting songs by our favorite bands
Telling jokes no one understands
Except us two

"Betcha could." Remus said, nudging him. Janus laughed.

"I highly doubt it." He said. "Remember back in Year 3?"

Remus burst out laughing, covering his mouth with his hand. "How could I forget?" He said, giggling. "You were Under Pressure!" He sang the last bit, laughing as Janus shoved him.

"Under pressure!" Remus bawled. "Pushing down on me-"

"Pressing down on you!" Janus joined in. "No man asked for-"

"Under pressure! That burns a building down-"

"Splits a family in two. Puts people on streets." Janus cut himself off, laughing. "I remember you couldn't sing that for the life of you when we first got to high school."

Remus shoved him indignantly. "I could too!"

And we talk and take in the view

Janus laughed. "Yeah, sure, sure, sure." He said sarcastically. He sighed and leaned his head back against the tree trunk, tilting it in Remus' direction.

"You okay, Jan?" Remus asked. Janus nodded. Remus took a breath and took Janus' hand, interlocking their fingers. Janus smiled, still looking out at the field. Remus thought he might die and if he did, he would die happy.

All we see is sky for forever
We let the world pass by for forever
Feels like we could go on for forever this way
Two friends on a perfect day

Neither of them spoke for a while. Remus watched the clouds pass by and noted down the shapes they made in his head. Just a stupid little pass-time.

Occasionally, he'd snatch glances at Janus and nearly have his breath taken away every time. The sunlight caught his hair just right so the brownish-blonde looked like strands of gold and bronze and his eyes were like chips of enchanted ice, sparkling with excitement and content. How someone could look so, so perfect and not know it was impossible to Remus' mind.

"I could sit like this forever." Janus said eventually, quiet so he wouldn't break the stillness of the moment.

"Maybe I could too." Remus said. "Long as you were here."

Janus looked up at Remus and met his eyes. He smiled gently. Remus swore his heart nearly stopped.

We walk a while and talk about
The things we'll do when we get out of school

Janus got up after a while and stretched. He held out a hand to Remus, who took it and pulled himself up.

"What're you going to do after O-Levels?" Janus asked. Remus shrugged and pulled Janus away from the tree, walking around the field. Just walking, no intent place to go.

"I don't know." Remus said. "I hadn't really thought about it. You?"

Janus shrugged.

Bike the Appalachian trail or
Write a book or learn to sail
Wouldn't that be cool?

"I think I'd like to write a book, be an author maybe." Janus said slowly.

"What would you write about?" Remus asked. Janus shrugged.

"Not sure yet." He shrugged again. "Maybe I'll get a house boat. Write about the treasures in the depths of the canal." Janus sighed and threw his arms up above his head. Since his hand was still clasped in Remus', Remus' arm went along for the ride.

"It's all so open and free." Janus said. "I'm definitely moving out of my dad's house, though. Maybe I'll find my mum, who knows."

"Yeah, who knows." Remus echoed.

There's nothing that we can't discuss
Like girls we wish would notice us but never do

"What about at school?" Janus asked. He nudged Remus with his hip. "How come your still single? Any particular girl you've got your eye on?"

Remus shrugged. "Not really. And I'm probably still single because I can't take anything seriously." He laughed. "What about you? Anyone caught your interest?"

"Yeah, actually." Janus said. "They're so cute. They've got the prettiest green eyes - like little emeralds - and they always have such messy hair but they pull it off seamlessly. And they're so funny and kind and they care about people so, so much. And they're so talented, oh my Gosh- they're basically the next Beethoven."

Remus couldn't help but feel jealously twist his heart at Janus' words. "Who're they?" He asked.

Janus laughed. "I'm not telling you, you'll have to guess!"

"Is it Roman?" Remus asked.

"Ew, no!" Janus protested. He flicked his fringe out of his face. "I have this thing called standards. Besides, imagine the back-lash I'd get if people found out I had a crush on Roman Winston."

"Who is it, then?" Remus asked. Janus stared at him. "Emily?"

"No, gross."

"Alison?"

"She has blue eyes, not green."

"Valary?"

"I've never met her." Janus said.

"Is it a girl?!" Remus asked. Janus stared at him, his pupils dilating.

"I- what, uh- I..." Janus trailed off and looked down. "Are you going to hate me?"

"No." Remus said. "I could never hate you, Jan." He promised.

Janus bit his lip. "You promise?" He asked.

"I swear it." Remus promised.

Janus looked down at his feet. "It's a boy." He said, his voice barely above a whisper. "Please don't hate me, I know that it's wrong and I know I'm disgusting for liking a boy and-"

"Jan, calm down." Remus said quietly. "It's okay. It's okay that you like boys. Hell, it's legal now!" Remus hesitated and then cupped Janus' face with his hand. "You are okay, okay?"

Janus looked down and nodded. "Okay."

He looks around and says to me
"There's nowhere else I'd rather be"
And I say, "me too"

Remus looked around, checking there was no one in the field. There never was, anyway.

"Look, if it's any consolation," he said quietly, "I like boys too."

Janus looked him in the eye. "You do?"

Remus nodded. "Yeah. And no one knows, so I'm trusting you with this."

"I'd never tell." Janus promised quickly. Remus nodded and his hand dropped from Janus' face.

"I know you wouldn't." He said. "I just had to be sure."

Janus leaned his head on Remus' shoulder. "I wouldn't ever want to lose you, Rem." He said quietly. "There's nowhere else I'd rather be than with you."

Remus smiled a little. "Me too."

And we talk and take in the view
We just talk and take in the view

Remus thought of maybe saying something, anything, just to break the silence. He wasn't the biggest fan of silences. But Janus looked happy to just walk along and take in the view. So maybe it'd be alright if there wasn't sound, just for a while.

All we see is sky for forever
We let the world pass by for forever
Feels like we could go on for forever this way, this way

"Look at the sky." Janus said suddenly, breaking the silence. "Look at that."

Remus looked up. Most if not all of the clouds had disappeared now and the sky was a deep, beautiful blue like the colour right in the centre of a sapphire.

"Woah." Remus said. "Looks almost dark enough to be night."

All we see is light for forever
'Cause the sun shines bright for forever

"Maybe cause it nearly is." Janus said. He gestured to his watch. "Nearly seven."

"Should we get back, d'you think?" Remus asked. Janus shrugged.

"Dad's out all night. I should be fine if I'm not back by curfew." He said confidently. "We could stay until the sun sets, if we wanted."

Like we'll be alright for forever this way
Two friends on a perfect day

Remus looked up, shielding his eyes against the sun. "Looks like the sun's gonna set soon." He said.

"Will we be able to see it?" Janus asked.

"Not on the ground." Remus' eyes lit up with an idea.

And there he goes
Racing toward the tallest tree
From far across the yellow field I hear him calling, "follow me"

Remus let go of Janus' hand and ran straight to the centre of the field, heading right for the tallest tree.

"Rem, where are you going?" Janus asked, trying to catch up with him.

"Follow me!" Remus yelled, already scrabbling up the tree. "We're going up!"

There we go
Wondering how the world might look from up so high

"I must be absolutely insane." Janus thought as he stumbled to a stop at the base of the tree. "Or absolutely in love."

"Come on, Jan!" Remus yelled from somewhere in the tree. "It's amazing up here."

"I think it's both." Janus muttered to himself as he grabbed the first branch.

One foot after the other
One branch then to another

Janus felt for the next branch up, forcing himself not to look down.

"How're you doing down there, Jan?" Remus called down.

"Fine, fine." Janus yelled back up.

I climb higher and higher

"Hey, Jan, it's amazing from up here." Remus repeated. "Wow, it really is."

I climb 'til the entire
Sun shines on my face

Janus squinted against the sudden sun as he poked his head out of the tree top.

"Ain't it pretty?" Remus asked. Janus' mouth fell open a bit.

"Woah." He said quietly. Whether he was saying that about the view or about the way the setting sun suddenly threw Remus into a different light and made Janus realise just how much he was in love with his best friend, he wasn't sure.

"You okay, Jan?" Remus asked. Janus blinked, sure he was blushing, and nodded.

"Yeah, yeah, fine." He looked down. "You know how you asked me who I had a crush on?" He asked quietly.

"You know you don't have to tell me if you're not comfortable." Remus said.

"I was describing you, Rem." Janus said. "I was describing you and how kind you are and I thought I was being way too obvious because I think I'm in love with you, Rem."

And I suddenly feel the branch give way

Janus felt something beneath him snap and then he was falling.

I'm on the ground
My arm goes numb

Janus looked around, dazed. Had he blacked out? His entire left arm was numb and there was an odd pain in his wrist, like a hundred bruises all clustered together.

Janus tried to use his arm to prop himself up. "Ow." He hissed, falling back down. "Ow!" He landed on his arm.

"Oh my God, Jan!"

I look around
And I see him come to get me
He's come to get me
And everything's okay

"Jan, oh my God!" Remus jumped down next to him. "I'm so sorry, are you okay?"

Janus tried to laugh weakly. His attempt at laughter came out as more of a sob. "I think my arm's broken, Rem." He said. Those words brought the tears threatening his eyes streaming down his cheeks.

"Hey, hey, hey." Remus helped Janus into a sitting position carefully and Janus clutched his arm to his chest. "Hey, it's going to be okay." Remus promised, cupping Janus' face and wiping away his tears. "Everything's going to be okay."

"What am I going to tell my dad?" Janus asked. "What am I going to tell my dad?! He's going to be so mad. I told him I'd stay inside but now I've got a broken arm with grass-stains all over it and-"

Remus pressed a kiss to Janus' forehead, cutting him off. "No matter what he does, I'm going to be there for you Jan." He promised and pressed another kiss to Janus' forehead. "I'm not going to let you face any of this alone."

Janus took a deep breath and tried to hold in his sobs. "Do you think you can stand?" Remus asked. Janus shrugged pathetically. Remus looked around. "Is it okay if I leave you here? Just for a little bit? We need to go find some help."

Janus swallowed and grabbed the trunk of the tree, pulling himself up slowly. "I've just broken my arm, Rem." He said quietly. "I think I can walk."

"Okay, okay, let's go." Remus put an arm around Janus' shoulders. "Everything's okay, everything's going to be okay, okay Jan?"

Well, that's a lot darker than I hoped. I really can't just let anything be, can I? No, it has to be angsty.
Bye,
Blaize
