Reunited

Virgil shrank in his seat, first days always cause his anxiety to spike. The chatter in the classroom faded away as the teacher entered the room.

"Welcome back, everyone! I'm sure summer was wonderful but I'm afraid we're back to reality now." A handful of students groaned at the reminder. "Anyways! A new student will be joining us this year. Would you mind introducing yourself?"

From the middle of the room, a boy with soft, brown hair stood up, wearing a bright, confident grin. As Virgil glanced at him, he was filled with a sense of... Nostalgia? He didn't quite understand why. Virgil looked at the boy once more, he actually looked rather familiar...

"Hi, I'm Roman Prince! My family just recently moved back into this neighborhood. We actually lived here before, when I was a child."

Something clicked in Virgil's mind. Roman Prince. He knew that name. That was the name of his childhood best friend. The Roman that was always by his side ever since he was born. The Roman that would play tag with him and hug Virgil when he caught him. The Roman that would cuddle him whenever he was scared or upset. His best friend.

Virgil couldn't rip his wide eyes from Roman. He remembered getting the news that Roman was moving away, they had a sleepover the day before he had to leave. That night, Virgil was barely able to sleep. He was too busy sobbing in his bed as they cuddled one last time. He wanted to cherish what he thought would be his last moments with his best friend.

Roman had sat down by now, and the teacher was starting the first lesson. He was unable to focus for the whole day, thinking about whether he should approach Roman or not. Worst case scenario, Roman doesn't remember him at all and he ends up embarrassing himself. On the other hand, their relationship was pretty solid, Roman would most likely remember him.

By dismissal, Virgil was sitting in the entrance of the school, weighing his options. He still hasn't made a solid decision when he saw Roman about to pass the gate. His body was on autopilot, apparently, as he found himself walking in Roman's general direction. By the time he caught up to him, they were quite a distance away from the school.

"Hey, uh, excuse me?" Roman turned around with raised eyebrows, standing just a few feet from Virgil. He felt small under Roman's gaze, but he managed to work up the courage to speak.

"I, uh, I don't know if you remember me, but my name's Virgil and-"

He was quickly cut off by another body pressed against his. Virgil froze as Roman tightly wrapped his arms around him, it took him a few seconds before fully processing what was happening and returning the hug.

"I knew you looked familiar. God, I miss you so much." Roman's breath on Virgil's ear caused a shiver to run through his spine. He stood there awkwardly, Roman's practically a stranger now. He's probably changed, they haven't spoken to each other in years after all.

But Roman's hold never loosened. Virgil thought maybe, just maybe, Roman's still the same boy as he was all those years ago. Virgil sighed, finally letting loose and letting his head rest on Roman's shoulder. In turn, Roman perched his chin on the top of his head.

They stood there, unmoving in the middle of the sidewalk as they held each other. Cherishing the moment, they spent quute some time frozen in thw spot.

Eventually, Roman was the first to move away. Virgil blushed as Roman kept his right hand on his waist, and the other at his shoulder.

"How have you been? Oh my god, I missed you so much!" Roman gushed excitedly, Virgil couldn't help but chuckle at his friend's excitement.

"Good, good. Hey, maybe you'd, uh, want to come over? Catch up, y'know? I think my dads would be delighted to see you again- I mean, only if you want to..."

Roman's smile brightened even more, which Virgil thought was impossible. "Sure! Yes! Of course, I'd love to! Shall we walk together?" Virgil was pulled into a hug once more.

"'Course, we haven't moved. Do you still remember where I live?"

"Duh! With how much time I used to spend there, I might as well start paying rent." They both laughed, especially Virgil because he knew it was true.

He finally has a friend again.
