Prompt 13: sharing

Logan heard quiet steps down the stairs and a moment later he and Virgil were staring at each other, Virgil with more surprise than anything else. It was unlikely that he had expected to find anyone else awake past midnight when everyone had bid their goodnights after the movie they watched a few hours ago.

"What are you doing up?" Virgil asked, finally stepping into the kitchen instead of standing frozen in the doorway. Logan watched him take a purple cup from the cupboard, then starting to make coffee.

"I wanted to make some changes to Thomas' filming schedule and then I found myself reading wikipedia articles until I looked at the time and realized how late it was. And I got hungry." Logan said. If Virgil hadn't noticed the crofters jar and toast he was sitting with yet he would have soon anyway.

"You've got more jam than bread." Virgil pointed out, not even glancing his way. Logan saw no way of responding to that while sounding dignified and only took a bite of his toast. It was quiet for a few minutes as Virgil wanted for the coffee to brew, and then he poured some into his cup, adding three sugar cubes.

"Should you really be drinking coffee at this time?" Logan asked him. If the anxious side was having trouble sleeping then coffee would not help.

"It's fine, this stuff doesn't work on me anyway." He said with a shrug. Virgil hesitated for a long moment, glancing at the doorway as if debating if he should return to his room or not. Eventually he sat down by the kitchen table with Logan, hands wrapped around his cup.

"May I ask why you are still awake?" Logan wondered, taking another bite of his crofters drenched toast. Virgil blew carefully on his hot drink, fingernails tapping against the porcelain of the cup.

"Couldn't sleep, I guess. It's that kind of night when you lie down and immediately you start to think of something that makes you sad or anxious and you know you'll have to either distract yourself until you pass out or you'll end up crying and feeling like shit for the next few hours." Virgil said, being far more honest than Logan had dared hope for.

"Oh. I see you are opting for constant distractions until you exhaust yourself then?" Logan understood the choice, he had done the same on nights when he just felt a little too ignored or left out, but it was not a healthy choice. Crying was a far more healthy way of dealing with difficult feelings.

"Yeah. I'm fine as long as I'm keeping myself occupied, and I really don't have the energy to cry or heighten my anxiety tonight." Virgil took a careful sip of his coffee and pulled a face as he no doubt burned his tongue.

"Would you like to watch something? And before you argue about my own rest, I would like to point out I could not go to bed knowing you might be upset, then I would be worrying about your well being instead of sleeping." Logan put his toast down on his plate again, standing up, already knowing that Virgil would agree to his suggestion.

"Yeah, that'd be nice." He said, standing up too and following Logan into the living room. They sat down together on the couch, Virgil grabbing his blanket that had been left there earlier.

"Hey, wanna share?" He said, holding his blanket up to show what he meant. They both knew very well that Logan could have just conjured up his own blanket if he had wanted one, and yet he accepted Virgil's offer. The other side moved closer, throwing the blanket over them both.

"What would you like to watch?" Logan wondered, conjuring up the remote from wherever it had disappeared.

"Maybe Buzzfeed Unsolved?" Virgil asked hesitantly and Logan smiled, finding the show and letting Virgil pick what video they wanted to see. The episode started and Virgil drank his coffee while watching the episode, Logan eating the rest of his toast. He had two left and he extended the plate towards Virgil who looked mildly confused at the unspoken offer.

"You sure? Yesterday you wouldn't allow Patton to put crofters in his jam cookies." He mumbled.

"I'm sure." Logan said and Virgil, after observing him for a few seconds, took a piece of toast. They watched the rest of the episode in silence, setting empty plates and cups on the coffee table.

Another episode started playing and Logan let it, having no intention of going to bed until Virgil seemed more okay with being alone. Logan knew very well Virgil would have put up more of a fight to keep Logan from sacrificing his sleep for his sake if he didn't really want or need the company.

Logan felt a warm weight leaning against his side and glancing to the side he realized Virgil was resting against him. He barely dared to breathe, just in case Virgil was about to fall asleep. Then when Virgil didn't move Logan smiled to himself, shifting to put an arm around Virgil's shoulders, thankful that his movements did not make the other pull away.

"We should do this more often." Virgil said as he slowly drifted off, head resting on Logan's shoulder.
