Late, late, late. The words screamed in Patton's mind as he hurried down the street, clutching his bags filled with papers due today. His professor would kill him if he didn't turn these in on time.
"Sorry!" he cried as he bumped into someone, tightening his grip on the bags.
As he rounded the corner, he felt a drop of water on the top of his head. He looked up. The sky was brewing with dark storm clouds, and a chilly wind made him shiver. Please don't rain, please don't rain, please-
The clouds broke. Patton staggered into a sprint as the rain picked up speed, splattering the sidewalk and soaking him. He shoved his bags under his shirt to keep them dry.
"No, no, no," he hissed quietly as water squished inside his shoe. "I should've just woken up at my alarm clock, stupid, come on, come on..." As he ran through a puddle, a sudden vicious gust of wind slammed into him and sent him stumbling to the side. His heel slid against the slick ground and he smacked into the ground, his papers scattering everywhere and water soaking the back of his shirt.
He laid there in shock for a long moment. Rain poured all around him. He watched as his important papers turned to soggy sheets, disintegrating in the water.
A quiet sob escaped him. His breathing hitched.
Fighting back tears, he struggled to his knees and began scooping up what could be salvaged, tucking it back into his bag. He reached for one a few feet away, but the wind scooped it up and swept it away.
"No!" Patton shouted.
Gone. Ruined.
"No," he whispered.
"Need some help?"
Patton's head snapped up. A young man stood above him, hand outstretched, one eyebrow quirked. He wore ripped black jeans, a grey shirt, and a stitched purple and black jacket with the zipper halfway down. His hair was black, but the fringes were dyed a deep purple.
"M-My papers" was all Patton could stammer out, eyes flicking to the purple words on his own forearm. Need some help?
The stranger's eyes went wide. He sucked in a breath, pulling back his sleeve. There, Patton could clearly see the words 'My papers' in bold blue ink.
"Shit," the stranger gasped. "Soulmates?"
Patton nodded absently. The shock of losing his papers and finding his soulmate was almost too much for him. After a moment, the stranger shook himself and grabbed Patton's hand, yanking him to his feet where he swayed unsteadily. The stranger made sure he wasn't going to fall, then picked up any other papers that were scattered around them.
"Are these important?" he asked.
"Yeah," Patton muttered. "They were. I failed the assignment anyway, so not anymore."
"Hey, um, I'm sorry." The stranger shifted his weight, one hand in his pocket. He extended the other for Patton to shake. "I'm Virgil, by the way."
Patton grasped Virgil's hand. "Patton."
"So, uh..." Virgil shuffled his feet with a slight smile. "Since you're already late, do you want to get some coffee?"
"I..." Patton sighed and glanced up at the dark sky. "That sounds nice."
Virgil hesitantly slipped his hand into Patton's. Patton smiled and laced their fingers together. Hand in hand, they headed off down the rainy boulevard.

This is ridiculously short, sorry
