"DON'T LEAVE ME! PLEASE! I'M BEGGING YOU!"

Logan screamed himself hoarse, but the pirates paid him no mind, fleeing the sinking ship in a raft and leaving him tied to mast. He was so stupid, really, letting his ship get captured. Logan tugged against his restraints, wincing as the rope chafed his skin.

He turned his gaze skyward, as water began to seep into his boots. "Please," Logan prayed to the cloudy sky. "Anyone, please, I don't want to die."

Then, just ahead of him, in the shallow water filling the boat, bubbles popped on the surface. Moments later, someone emerged from the depths, a boy with a mop of sky blue hair and shimmering blue eyes. Sparkling blue freckles dotted his cheeks. Logan gaped. The boy tilted his head, observing Logan.

"Help me!" Logan cried. The water has reached his knees. "Untie the rope!"

The boy inched forward, then held something up. It was a little fish, colored dull green. "Fish," the boy said, smiling. His teeth were slightly pointed.

"Fish?" Logan questioned. "I don't need a fish! I need you to untie me! Please!" The water was cold against his chest.

"Fish," the boy repeated, a little more urgently this time. "Fish!"

"Are you stupid!?" Logan shouted, straining to keep his head above the water. "I don't need a fish! No fish! No fish!! Untie me!"

The boy scowled at him. "Fish," he insisted.

The water reached his neck, and Logan gasped for air, whispering one last prayer, and in that moment, the boy dropped the little fish into his mouth, and he slipped under.

The boy clamped a hand over his mouth, forcing him to swallow the fish. They were both completely submerged, and Logan was finally able to see that the boy had a long, glittery blue and grey tail instead of legs. A merman.

Logan nearly choked. A tingling feeling was spreading up his legs, and some invisible force held them together as dark blue scales began to form, coating his body from the waist down. A few spots were darker than others, and he realized that the tail was accompanied with shark-like fins. Patton didn't have fins, but his tail was large and bushy, so while Logan resembled a dolphin, Patton was closer to a beta fish. In fact, the fish that he had given Logan was a green beta fish. The tail felt strange, but yet he was able to flap the fin when he concentrated.

It was then that the boy reached down and untied the ropes, freeing Logan.

Logan lunged away from the ship, panting heavily, then gasped when he realized he was breathing the water. He reached up and felt flaps of skin lining his neck. Gills. H-He was a merman. His glasses slipped off and sank, but he could see perfectly fine.

"The fish," Logan whispered. The boy nodded, grinning.

"The fish," he confirmed. "I'm Patton. What's your name?"

"Logan."

"Come on," Patton said, reaching over and taking Logan's hand.

"Y-You're a merman," Logan stammered, consciously reminding his new tail to help him swim alongside Patton.

"So are you, silly," Patton teased, tapping Logan's nose with a light blue claw. On closer inspection, all of his nails were sharpened to points, and glancing down at his own, Logan realized that he, too, had claws.

"Come meet my friends," Patton whispered, and together they dove into the depths.
