The school was a death trap, more so than usual.
Virgil didn't know who's idea it had been to let the students decorate it for christmas, but he actively loathed whoever that was. Or perhaps the students who had done the decorating. Or both?
Anyway, he could live with the tinsel taped to the top of the lockers, the Christmas-y art that they've made in art class hung to the walls, stars and candles in the windows, even the Christmas wreaths with pictures of the teachers faces that hung on the doors to their classrooms. But the mistletoe that had been hung up in the ceiling in every corridor and many of the doorways?
Why would anyone think that was a good idea?
Sure, he could understand that some people were excited to get stuck under a mistletoe with their crush, like his friend Roman who was very eager to lure his crush with him. And sure, maybe Virgil wouldn't hate it if he would find himself standing under a mistletoe with a certain someone, but still.
Since his previous lesson ended he'd already seen one guy get punched for kissing someone else's girlfriend, and seen a group of guys find themselves under a mistletoe and then when noticing it running for their lives and pushing their friends away if they got too close while calling them gay. This was a setup for disaster.
"Hello, Virgil!" A familiar voice said and Virgil looked up in time to see one of his best friends bouncing towards him, then wrapping his arms around him.
"Hey, Patton." Virgil said, hugging him back and seeing Roman and Logan as he looked over Patton's shoulder, and Roman gave him a knowing grin and a look that Virgil was well aware of what it meant. He stuck his tongue out at him and then stepped out of Patton's embrace.
"We've all got math first lesson, don't we?" Logan asked, sounding more pleased than anyone should. Virgil sighed and nodded and Roman made a grimace.
"It was awful that you weren't at the last math lesson, Logan, I'm at least a page behind, you have to help me." Patton said, Roman nodding in agreement. Honestly, if it wasn't for Logan Virgil thought they would all fail math. He was the only one with any brain cells left.
"Yeah, we had a substitute and I don't think he even passed high school math, he wasn't any help at all." Roman stared up at the ceiling, probably searching for mistletoe.
"Unsurprising," Logan said, who knew which substitute teacher they were talking about, "anyway, let's get to class on time."
They started walking towards their classroom even though it was about fifteen minutes until the lesson would start, but at least they'd waste five of those minutes while walking through the whole school to get to the math class which seemed to always be as far away as possible.
"Ooh, mistletoe!" Roman exclaimed, staring up at the ceiling and then at Logan who was walking next to him. Virgil didn't think Roman had accidentally stepped underneath the plant at all. Logan glanced up, unphazed.
"Now, see, that is actually holly, not mistletoe. The two are often mixed up." He said and kept walking. Roman threw a long look after him and Patton gave him a pat on the shoulder as he walked by him. Virgil was careful to walk as far away from the holly as he could. Mistletoe or not, he wasn't going to be standing beneath it.
"Is he seriously that dense?" Roman whined quietly, following him and Patton, still staring at Logan who was walking ahead of them. Virgil wasn't sure that was a question that Roman wanted them to answer and therefore said nothing.
"Well, you know Logan..." Patton said vaguely.
"Seriously though, I've been trying to find a reason to kiss him for months now and he's yet to understand. How much louder can I pine?" Roman complained.
"Maybe you could just straight up tell him 'I want to kiss you'?" Virgil suggested, because not even Logan could be clueless enough to misunderstand or disregard that.
"How dare you insinuate that I can do anything straight." Roman said, very offended.
"Well, do you have a better idea? No? I thought so." Virgil said tauntingly. Roman playfully shoved him and he stumbled into Patton who put an arm around his shoulders to steady him. Virgil flustered and didn't shake Patton's arm away, as he normally would if anyone touched him.
"Maybe you should focus on your own struggles with your crush." Roman said, arms crossed over his chest. Virgil wondered if it would be considered mean or not to punch his friend in the face for mentioning his crush in front of his crush.
"Ooh, who's your crush?" Patton asked eagerly and Virgil gave Roman a murdering glare that he hoped Patton couldn't see. Roman just grinned and then hurried up to Logan, dunking his hand on Logan's back and saying something to him that Virgil didn't bother trying to hear.
"It's- it's no one, Pat." Virgil pulled his hood down as far over his face as he could. Thankfully Patton dropped the subject and they made it to math class without getting stuck under mistletoe or holly or any other plant.
Math class passed slowly but at least they got somewhere now that Logan was there and could actually tell them what they did wrong and how they could fix their mistakes. Even if they all teased Logan about it sometimes, Virgil was glad that he planned on becoming a teacher in the future because teachers who knew what they were doing were definitely needed, this entire school was a prime example of that.
After that class they had lunch and they planned on going to the store near their school to get something more appetizing than whatever they were serving in the cafeteria. Virgil suspected Logan was going to attempt to persuade them not to eat lunch consisting of chips and doughnuts, and he also suspected that he wasn't going to succeed.
Now as they were walking from class Roman and Logan were a bit behind, and looking back behind them Virgil could see Roman talking about something and Logan listening attentively, now and then stealing glances at him and looking rather happy about Roman's excitement.
How those two obvious idiots had not yet began dating was a mystery to Virgil.
"Oh." Patton said and stopped suddenly, forcing Virgil to a stop too as he still had his arm linked with Virgil's, and Virgil didn't have to look up to see what Patton had noticed but he did anyway. He heard Roman quiet behind them as they too came to a halt.
"We're under a mistletoe." Patton said, stating the very obvious. Virgil's heart made a lurch in his chest, as if it wanted to escape his body and leave him with a 'good luck'.
"Well, you know what that means." Roman said and Virgil saw him wiggling his eyebrows and smiling when he glanced at him.
"Actually, that too is holly, not mi-" Logan began but Roman put a hand over his mouth and dragged him away.
"Good luck guys- I mean gays, don't disappoint me!" Roman shouted as they rounded a corner and Virgil considered not following through with this simply to annoy and frustrate Roman. He looked at Patton who already had his eyes on him, smiling a small, shy smile that Virgil really shouldn't be staring at.
"Um, we don't have to kiss, you know. Not if you don't want to." Patton said
"I know." Virgil said, because that was the only thing he could think of saying that wasn't literally 'I've wanted to kiss you for months'. Patton was smiling as if he knew what Virgil was thinking, and he took a step closer to him, Virgil's heart already beating about twice as fast in anticipation.
Was this when Patton was going to laugh and say 'you thought'?
Patton stood on the tip of his toes, wrapping his arms around Virgil's neck and placing his lips on his in a gentle kiss that made Virgil feel a little weak in the knees, if he was being honest. His hands ended up placed on Patton's waist, keeping him close even when the kiss ended. Virgil reluctantly opened his eyes, which he wasn't aware he'd closed until now.
Patton let go of Virgil rather slowly and Virgil managed to let go of him too, pretending that he wasn't tempted to pull Patton in and hug him close, and bury his face in the crook of his neck. Instead of doing any of that he ducked his head and wrapped his arms around himself, glancing up at Patton.
"You're so cute when you're flustered." Patton said with a small and breathless laugh, smiling with his whole face, eyes practically shining with joy. Virgil hadn't got a clue how he was supposed to answer that, because his normal 'okay' or 'cool' didn't seem to cut it.
"You're cute all the time." Virgil said, the words slipping out of his mouth before he had a chance to stop them. Now, that wasn't a lie in the least, Virgil definitely thought Patton was the most adorable person ever at all times, but it was an embarrassing thing to say and maybe an awkward laugh would have been better.
"Do you want to go on a date?" Patton asked, almost looking surprised at the words that had tumbled out of his mouth for a moment and the two of them stared at each other for a brief second while Virgil internally battled if Patton was seriously asking or not.
"Yeah?" Virgil said even if he wasn't sure if Patton was joking or not because, fuck, yeah he wanted to go on a date with him.
"Okay!" Patton grinned and Virgil smiled back dumbly, trying to not look as in love as he felt.
"Okay." Virgil echoed, then being brought back to the reality of them standing in the middle of an ugly school corridor by the noise of a mass of students walking their way. Virgil didn't know what else to say and neither did Patton apparently because they shared another smile and then began walking away from the approaching students and towards where Roman and Logan had disappeared.
They found them sitting in another empty corridor, Logan sitting on a bench and in the middle of explaining something that sounded very complicated while Roman was sat cross legged on the floor, head leaned in his hand as he stared up at Logan as if he was the most beautiful being he had ever laid eyes on.
Virgil briefly wondered if that was how he looked when looking at Patton but then pushed that thought away, no way he ever looked that soft.
"Hey lovebirds, are we going to get some lunch or do you want me to slowly starve to death while trying to make it through social studies?" Virgil called and Roman almost jumped, looking as if he'd been caught somewhere he shouldn't be. Logan stopped his rambling and gave Virgil a look that he couldn't read. Roman stood up from the floor brushing the dirt of the back of his pants.
"Did you actually kiss?" He immediately asked, staring at them as if him looking at them would make them tell him.
"No." Virgil said automatically. Roman looked suspiciously between them both.
"I don't believe you." He decided, crossing his arms, looking at Logan as if waiting for his opinion on the matter and Logan only shrugged.
"Maybe that's what we want you to think? And we actually didn't. Or we did. You'll never actually know." Patton said innocently and Roman gave him a look of disbelief as if he couldn't believe his friend could do such a cruel thing to him.
"Let's go get lunch before I kill and eat you guys." Virgil complained, wanting to get past this topic of conversation before Roman stared at him until he read his mind or something of the like. They had been friends since they were kids, Virgil really couldn't hide much from him for very long.
"Alright, fastest exit is this way." Roman said and steered them in the direction of what was not the fastest exit, but Virgil supposed he wanted to avoid the mistletoe (or holly or whatever) that he himself had just found himself under with Patton.
Virgil looked up at the ceiling of the corridor, spotting the small plant hung a few meters before Roman and Logan. He nudged Patton and pointed, and they shared a smile. Virgil waited until Logan and Roman we're right beneath it before doing anything.
"Hey, Logan," Virgil shouted, getting his attention and then pointing to the plant above his and Roman's heads, "is that mistletoe or holly?"
"Um, well, I'd believe that is actual mistletoe..." He said, quickly giving Roman a rather nervous glance that Roman didn't notice as he was busy staring at the mistletoe.
"We'll wait for you two outside." Virgil said with a grin. Roman stared at him and looked like he couldn't decide if he should be feeling mortified or thankful. Virgil gave him a stare that he hoped gave Roman a clear message of you've-got-your-chance-now-take-it.
Virgil glanced back at them before exiting the school, seeing them both flustered and looking at each other, and he chuckled.
Pay back.
