Logan stepped into the small coffee shop, pleased to see that it was not as busy as the other one he had passed. It was not very loud, it was clean and cozy, and there was no line to the counter.
And it was warm, Logan had been unwise to forget his jacket as he rushed from home this morning. Even more so to forget his lunch. He'd been done teaching fairly early, but he was still starving, hence why he was stopping at this shop, having been tempted by the sandwiches they displayed.
"Hi, what can I get you?" The person behind the counter said with a cheerful tone. He had glasses similar to Logan's own and his name tag read 'Patton, he/him'.
The name caught his attention, one of his two soulmates was named that, but he shook his worry off. (What were the chances?)
"Hi, I'd like a coffee, no sugar, no cream, and one of those sandwiches." Logan said and pointed at the glass that displayed all the kinds of sandwiches and pastries and sweets one could buy at the shop.
"That'll be right up!" Patton said and swirled around to make his order, soon placing Logan's coffee and sandwich on the counter and telling him the total he had to pay. Logan reached for his wallet as Patton, who seemed to be quite an energetic person, drummed with his fingers against the counter, to the beat of the quiet music that was playing.
"Here you go." Logan said and handed him the money he owed, which the other man took with a surprisingly genuine-looking smile.
Then the man halted and gasped and at first Logan was terribly confused, at least until Patton dropped the money onto the counter and instead reached out for Logan's arm, grabbing him.
"That's Virgil's!" He exclaimed, pointing at the part of Logan's arm where one of his soulmates had drawn several purple, cartoon-ish spiders that his students had snickered at during class. And now Logan looked over at Patton, who was also wearing a short sleeved shirt, and realized he did have those same drawings on his own arm, paired with the light blue 'spiders are scary ):' that was written beneath.
"Oh." Logan said, feeling almost self conscious under the others excited gaze. Patton was grinning widely, looking as if his entire day had just been made.
Logan was a little too stunned to properly think, and he wasn't sure how he felt.
He'd just come here for lunch, not to be found by his soulmates, soulmates who he occasionally wrote to but had never made any effort to find after the other two had found each other a year ago.
"Oh my gosh, hang on, hang on." Patton babbled, grasping for a pen he had in his pocket and then, on Logan's arm, writing down a phone number in bright blue ink. Then he seemed to realize he was still holding onto his arm because he let go with a quick apology.
"Hi, I'm Patton and apparently you're my soulmate." He said, introducing himself. Logan pushed his glasses up a little, looking more properly at the person in front of him that was apparently his soulmate.
Patton had slightly curly hair that seemed to fall in his eyes now and then, part of it dyed a light blue similar to the one he wrote with. He was shorter than Logan was but seemed to be around the same age. He had freckles on his face and even down on his arms, many, many more than Logan himself had.
"My name is Logan, and yes that seems to be the case." He said. His soulmate seemed to be practically bouncing on his toes with excitement.
The door to the shop opened and Patton glanced behind Logan at the new customers, quickly gathering up Logan's money again and finishing the order.
"If you give me five minutes then I'll go on break." Patton said pleadingly and Logan nodded, finding himself unable to decline even if part of him was eager to leave.
Logan stepped aside with his things, scanning the shop for a seat, finding a secluded enough table where he could sit down. He stared at where his soulmate was helping the new customers, absentmindedly biting into the sandwich to sate his hunger that was currently forgotten.
He sighed and averted his eyes, pulling his backpack with his laptop and his students' math tests off to sit more comfortably as he waited. Logan sipped his coffee, wishing that it had a calming effect on his nerves.
Logan felt a tingling sensation on his arm, which meant that one of his soulmates was writing something, and he angled his arm to look.
'u forgetting ur own number again pat?' It was written in purple, from the one named Virgil. His grammar was almost always horrendous.
'NO. OTHER SOULMATE' was quickly scrawled beneath in bright blue. Logan found himself holding his own pen that he always kept in his pocket. He hovered the tip over his skin, worrying his lip between his teeth, having an internal debate about responding or not. A bunch of purple question marks appeared below Patton's new message.
"Hi, I'm sorry for the wait but I'm here now." Patton sat down in front of Logan, still wearing his work clothes, but his apron had been left somewhere else.
"No worries, I've got nowhere to be." Logan replied, pocketing his pen again and wrapping his fingers against his paper cup of coffee, warming his hands.
"So..." Patton began and Logan was slightly relieved to note that Patton seemed to be just as nervous as he was. It was comforting to know that all three of them were now in an unfamiliar situation. Though at least Patton and Virgil had gone through finding a soulmate before.
It was a slightly awkward conversation at first, neither of them sure what to say or how to feel, but Patton seemed just as sweet in person as his messages through the soulmate bond always were and it was impossible to not relax in his presence and be roped into the conversation regardless of how unprepared he felt about this meeting.
"Maybe we could meet up, all three? We both really want to get to know you! We've wanted to find you for so long." Patton admitted with a small and soft smile after fidgeting with a pencil that he had had behind his ear.
"Maybe this evening? We could have a picnic in the park, it's usually really nice there in the evenings, not too many people, we'll get the space to just talk." Patton continued quickly, nervously, but the glance he sent Logan was hopeful.
"I suppose I have nothing better to do." Logan said truthfully. He had tests to grade, sure, but those could definitely wait since he had originally planned to not grade them this evening anyway. The thought of meeting with his soulmates for what was pretty much a date was nerve racking, but he couldn't say no, for whatever reason.
"I can't wait!" Patton said, loudly enough to make the people closest glance at them. Logan smiled slightly at his excitement, he could not help it.
"I'll write you the details, like, at what time, when I get off work. I have to go call Virgil now before my break ends." Patton said, bouncing up from his seat and, before Logan had the time to react, warped his arms around Logan in a slightly awkward but warm and soft embrace.
Logan sat stunned by the sudden affection and watched Patton hurry away, pulling his phone up. Logan, having drank his coffee and almost finished his sandwich, stood up from his seat and collected his things. With a slightly racing heart he then made his way home to his apartment while eating the rest of the sandwich.
A few hours later, around dinner time, Logan was the first of them to arrive at the park, having made sure to leave his apartment early to have plenty of time to find the name of the park that Patton had later written down on his arm. It turned out to be close to the coffee shop where Patton had been working.
He found a bench that he sat down on to wait, a big tree shielding him from the bright sun. All the clouds had gone away while Logan had walked to the park and now it was much warmer outside than it had when he had been on his way home.
Logan removed his jacked just in time to see Patton writing 'on our way, be there in 15 :)' by his wrist. Immediately his nerves increase tenfold. He's about to meet both of them, both of his soulmates.
Logan has never before made any effort to find them, nor had he expected to find them. Up until two months ago he had lived in another state and not had the opportunity to come and meet his soulmates despite knowing their names and which city they lived in.
It hadn't been until a couple of years ago that Logan first got any messages, being a year older than Virgil and a year and a few months older than Patton. It was quite common to not get any messages or replies until after a few years of turning twenty, since if there was an age difference then at least one soulmate would need to wait for the other or others to turn twenty too.
Logan had never been the one writing the most out of the three of them. Patton was definitely the one that wrote the most, regularly updating them about his life and rude customers and dogs he saw outside.
Virgil had always been a bit more hesitant to write, just like Logan, but soon he had warmed up to the thought of the two of them and told them about his day and alerted them if he was feeling anxious.
Logan didn't dislike all the messages, despite not being as keen as the other two to conversate. Patton seemed to be incredibly kind, energetic, positive, and loving. Virgil was caring in his own way, sensible, sarcastic, braver than he thought. Logan might not know them, but in a way he did.
And about a year ago they had found each other, somehow stumbled into each other's lives. Logan had been happy for them, really, but it had also intensified his already present worries that he was not exactly needed in their soulmate trio.
What would he ever bring to a relationship, whether platonic or romantic? And Patton and Virgil already had each other and they fit together and were happy. Logan had never been the most ecstatic about soulmates, but he definitely did not want to ruin anything for them.
Which was why he had not let them know when he got a job in the same town they lived. It hadn't felt worth it. But here Logan was, nervously fidgeting with his pen and waiting for the two soulmates he had never planned to find. So far he was unable to decide if he was unhappy about today's events or not. He supposed only time would show.
Logan pulled his phone out of his pocket, finding the fascinating article about dwarf planets that he had been reading on the bus to work this morning. It occupied him for a few minutes and then he felt compelled to look up, and when he did his eyes fell on Patton and someone who must be Virgil.
He could tell when Patton spotted him, he started walking faster, pulling Virgil along by his hand, and as he got closer Logan could see the big smile on his face. The first thing Patton did, even before saying hello, was to, without letting go of Virgil's hand, pull Logan in for another hug. At least this time Logan returned it, if somewhat stiffly.
Patton took a step back and Logan took a better look at Virgil. He had dark, almost black hair, with his fringe dyed purple (Logan often knew when the other dyed his hair, any dye stains on Virgil's skin would show up on him and Patton too). He was dressed in purple sneakers with rainbow shoelaces, black ripped jeans, a band t-shirt that Logan did not recognize, and an oversized black hoodie with purple patches.
"Hey, um, I'm glad we've finally found you." Virgil said, not entirely meeting Logan's eyes. Then he surprised him by taking a step closer and pulling Logan into a hug, not as tightly as Patton, but strangely comforting still.
Virgil drew back much quicker than his boyfriend had and Logan pretended he didn't feel flustered. Soon the three of them sat on a bright blue blanket, sitting in the shadow of a tree. Patton had had a little backpack with him, and out of it he pulled cookies, hot chocolate, tea, and sandwiches.
"I know you both like coffee but someone," Patton pointedly stared at Virgil as he poured up their hot drinks, "has already had six cups today."
"That is not very healthy." Logan said, accepting the mug of tea that Patton handed him. If he had been feeling more confident then he would have launched into a hypocritical rant about the damages of consuming too much caffeine, but he did not want to annoy either of them.
"So... are you here for a visit or..?" Virgil asked, ignoring the coffee discussion. Logan took a sip of the tea, not meeting either of their eyes.
"Actually, I moved here two months ago. I got a new job." Logan said, trying not to feel guilty at the fact that he had been keeping such a thing from them both. But if he had told them then they would have insisted on meeting him and... well, it would not have mattered, Logan supposed, as they had managed to find their way into his life anyway.
"Why didn't you tell us? Two months!" Patton exclaimed. Logan dared look up at them and felt slightly less tense when seeing no anger in their expressions.
"I- well, moving and starting a new job was stressful and a bit overwhelming and, truth be told, I was nervous to meet you." Logan said sheepishly. It was not the entire truth, but it was still embarrassing enough to admit.
Virgil quietly observed him as he was holding his cup of hot chocolate. He seemed much quieter than Patton, which fit with how he seemed when writing them messages through the soulmate bond.
"I was really nervous to meet you too, for lots of reasons. We both were." Patton said, flushing slightly pink. Logan did not know how to feel about that, because obviously it was logical that they were nervous, but there were many reasons why they could be nervous about it, and maybe the two of them had also been worrying that finding Logan would somehow mess up the relationship they already had.
"That is understandable," Logan said, hesitating slightly before his next words, but it felt important to clarify, "I would not want to intrude on the relationship you have, please do not feel obligated to involve me."
"Honey no, that is the opposite of what we're worried about." Patton said, expression shifting into something more closely to panic. That was not what Logan had wanted. Virgil set his mug down, fidgeting with a loose thread from his hoodie, now looking right at Logan.
"Actually, we've been worried that you'll think exactly like that. We don't want you to feel like you have no place with us just because we found each other first. I get why you'd feel that way, it's exactly how I would think if it was me in your situation, but please believe that we really do want you in our lives, however that will be." Virgil said, suddenly much less quiet, and Patton nodded along quickly.
"If a relationship with us isn't what you want, then of course we won't be trying to force you into anything, but don't think that we wouldn't want you, please. We might not know each other that well yet, but I really want to." Patton said and Logan found himself smiling slightly.
Their words had somehow, for the moment at least, pushed away most of his worry. They both seemed so sincere, and maybe it was the work of their soulmate bond, but Logan couldn't help but to trust them.
"I... don't think I know what I want yet. But, I suppose, I would not be opposed to finding that out." Logan said, earning a blinding smile from Patton and an incredibly soft, half hidden, one from Virgil.
He was sure he would keep worrying for a while, neither of them could predict what would happen, but for the moment Logan allowed himself to feel quite hopeful.
