The grass they were sat in looked a silvery green in the light from the bright moon, the sky and all the stars in it reflected on the still water of the lake in front of them, and so did the fireworks exploding in the sky. It was perfect, because Roman had made sure it would be. It had to be. Everything had to be perfect for his date with Patton.

His dates with Patton always needed to be perfect, because Patton deserved nothing less, but today especially. Not that he had actually told Patton this was one of their dates.

He'd wanted it to be more of a surprise. After all, a proposal should be a surprise, should it not? Then why not have the whole date as a surprise. Though he was fairly sure Patton had at least figured this was some sort of surprise date by now.

Roman glanced at Patton, seeing him still with his eyes glued on the sky, and Roman had never before been so happy about his ability to control and form the imagination.

It answered to all his wants, as long as he could imagine it, and fireworks were easy. Roman had spent last night brainstorming all kinds of fireworks that Patton would like to see. He had a few minutes ago amazed Patton with fireworks that exploded into glittery images of several different kinds of cute animals.

"Too bad Logan and Virgil didn't want to come." Patton said, almost looking a bit sad but then gasping softly when another firework exploded in the sky.

"Yeah." Roman said, glad Patton wasn't looking at him since he'd never been the best at lying or keeping things a secret. Patton could always see right through him. Truth be told Roman had cornered the two other traits before dinner, telling them to not under any circumstances agree when he later suggested they all went into the imagination to watch fireworks.

Virgil had just smirked in a knowing way and said he hadn't wanted to go anyway, Logan had raised his brows in a way that suggested he too knew exactly why Roman wanted them far away and said nothing.

Roman didn't feel bad about leaving them out, especially not tonight. Despite, he was sure the two nerds would rather be reading, or watching tv, or some other antisocial activity.

Roman put an arm around Patton's shoulders, pressing a kiss to his cheek. He wanted to conjure up a thousand roses for Patton, make a billion fireflies rise from the grass around them, make glitter fall from the sky, but maybe that was a bit extra even for Roman. Or maybe not, but Roman didn't want Patton wondering if tonight was anything special, even if it was.

Another explosion in the sky and exactly one hundred (Roman had made sure) red and light blue hearts flickered in the sky for a few seconds before the sparks faded away. That was the end of the fireworks display, even though Roman knew Patton could contentedly sit here and watch fireworks with him for a long while… There were more aspects left to their evening.

Roman stood up, holding both his hands out for Patton to take, which he did, and he helped him up on his feet too.

"Is it over?" Patton asked, pouting a bit, a pout which Roman just could not keep himself from leaning in and kissing away. After all, it seemed every time Roman kissed Patton it made him smile, which Roman definitely used to his advantage.

"Well, the fireworks display is, but the evening? Far from." Roman said.

First they had had their dinner (though joined by Virgil and Logan), then the fireworks show, then Roman hoped he would find the right moment to propose, either before or after they would take a small walk through the imagination, and then, just to top the evening of in a calm way, they'd get into bed and watch something of Patton's choice while in their pajamas.

Roman had made sure they had Patton's favorite ice cream plus fresh strawberries back home in the mindscape. There was always a need for snacks.

"Well, it really was wonderful, Roman, I loved it!" Patton said, eyes as bright as his smile and Roman swear his heart melted into a puddle of affection and love.

"I'm glad, dearest." Roman said, trying not to show the overflow of energy he had. He was nervous, maybe for good reason, maybe not, but nerves always made him feel as if he couldn't sit still and needed to move constantly.

"And I love you." Patton continued, letting go of Roman, cupping Roman's face in his hands and brushing their noses together before softly kissing him. Then Patton stepped back, a small laugh escaping him when he notices the blush on Roman's face.

"Stop being so adorable, as a prince I am the one supposed to sweep you off your feet, not the other way around." Roman joked.

"You did that long ago." Patton said, and Roman's heart was a puddle again. He was tempted to sink down onto knee and pull a ring out right then and there. And maybe he should, maybe not pull out the ring just yet, but maybe he should be babbling out that sappy speech that everyone should have before proposing, why drag out on it?

"Patton, Pat, dearest, pay attention to me now. I've got something important to say?" Roman said and it seemed now that the time had come Roman was a lot more nervous than he'd thought he would be. Him, nervous? Roman near scoffed at himself. Romance should be his thing. The word even contained his name.

"You've got all my attention, Ro." He said, hand brushing through Roman's hair, which had been perfect until now. Roman couldn't find it in himself to be upset about looking a little bit like a mess around Patton.

"Good. You know I love you right? Like, so, so much. More than anyone else in the whole world I love you." He began, Patton nodded and leaned in and kissed the tip of Roman's nose. Roman got momentarily distracted by that and forgot his words.

"Patton, you're distracting me." He said, attempting to whine but his nervousness and his joy mixed together made him almost laugh and he ended up sounding more amused than he'd meant. And hopefully not too nervous.

"Sorry, keep going. I won't interrupt you again." Patton grinned when Roman kissed him. A chaste kiss to his lips. Roman hadn't been able to stop himself.

"My speech is important. But most importantly, you are important to me. And I thought a lot about what to say when I planned this… date. Because I want you to understand how amazing and lovely and beautiful and cute and smart and brilliant and funny and incredible you are." Roman quieted for only a second or two, watching Patton's expression.

He didn't seem to have yet understood where this was going (to be fair Roman did have small speeches now and then without it being anything special) but Patton looked so damn happy that Roman's heart might have just forgotten to beat once or twice in surprise. Somehow he still had moments in awe over how pretty Patton was.

"But words just won't do you justice, Pat. They won't. So I'm kind of rambling on without a real plan of what to say." Roman admitted. It was true, and he wasn't sure if it was disappointing or not that he, as the embodiment of creativity, hadn't been able to properly prepared a proposal speech.

"We've been dating for a long time and I just could not imagine things being any other way. Being with you makes life as close to perfect as it can be. We might not actually be real humans, but rather aspects of someone's personality, but I can't see why that should stop us from taking these steps forward in our relationship." He let go of Patton's hands, hoping that it wasn't too obvious that he was digging for something in his pocket.

Roman took a step back and sunk down onto one knee, small box already in his hand. Patton had gasped and now had his hands pressed over his mouth, tears already gathering in his eyes at the sheer realization of what was going on. Roman held the box up, opening it and then opening his mouth to speak.

"Patton Sa-"

"Yes." Patton said immediately, tears now overflowing from his eyes and he sniffled, laughing when seeing Roman's almost stern look at having been interrupted. Roman then chuckled, almost involuntarily but Patton was being too adorable.

"Let me finish speaking, my prince." Patton answered with another sniffle and a nod and Roman could tell he had to use most of his self restraint to remain standing there. Roman cannot blame him, all he wants to do is scoop Patton up in his arms and press kisses all over his face.

"Patton Sanders, will you marry me?"

"Yes! Of course I will. It's- I-" Patton flung himself at Roman, knocking them both onto the ground and most of Roman's air out of his lungs too. He laughed breathlessly, arms around Patton already and holding him close, paying no mind to the hard ground beneath him or the fact that something was digging into his back.

Patton was mumbling something unintelligible into the crook of Roman's neck and Roman took this opportunity to press a kiss to his cheek, wishing Patton would pull back a bit so he could kiss him properly.

He rolled over, the two of them ending up lying on their sides, facing each other. Patton still had small tears running down his cheeks and Roman kissed those away, then kissing his forehead, his nose, his jaw, pressing kisses everywhere he could while Patton repeatedly said Roman's name between quiet laughter.

Patton tightened his arms around Roman, their bodies being quite pressed together, and then he pressed their mouths together in a slow kiss which Roman melted into and he couldn't bring himself to care at all about all the grass stains his white clothes were bound to be getting now.

"Pat," Roman started, then realizing he didn't know what to say, all the words seemed too small to articulate what he was feeling anyway, but Patton's name was one thing that had a lot of meaning anymore, "Patton, hi, Patton."

"Hi, Roman." Patton said with a laugh and leaned in until their noses brushed. Their foreheads leaned together and they surely looked like lovesick fools, but to be fair that was an accurate description.

"You know, if you just sit up I can put your new ring on your finger." Roman said, and Patton scrambled up into a sitting position with a soft gasp. He held his hand out, fingers spread wide as Roman slowly sat up too, reopening the ring box that had shut while they'd been practically been rolling around on the ground.

Roman carefully took the ring out, other hand grasping Patton's to steady it. Or maybe to steady Roman's own hands a little. Perhaps they were trembling the slightest bit. He slid the ring onto Patton's ring finger, and they both stared down at it for a short moment before both looking up and staring at each other with matching stupidly big grins.

"The ring is so pretty, Roman. I love it." Patton said and Roman briefly wondered if Patton's smile ever would fade or if it was branded on him forever.

"You are so pretty, Patton. I love you." Roman said. Patton laughed, new tears slipping down his cheeks.

"Patton, my prince." Roman said. He didn't like seeing Patton crying, even if the tears were good, and even if he knew crying was a healthy way of dealing with emotion.

"I'm so emotional." Patton said, almost apologetic about it. Roman wouldn't have Patton ever apologizing for his feelings, no matter if they were good or bad.

"That's alright Patton, you know that." Roman said softly.

"Would you like taking a walk with your fiance?" He then continued. Patton leaned into Roman, face pressing into his chest, laughing in what might be disbelief, then nodding.

"Yes, I'd love to." He said, and Roman waited until he stopped hiding and then helped him up on his feet. He wiped away the wet on Patton's cheeks, then taking his hand in his own and slowly they began walking.

They had no destination to reach and walked aimlessly through the silvery green grass, and Roman didn't see any idea in holding back anymore, and the imagination bent to his will, fireflies emerging from the grass as they walked.

Patton was clearly very fascinated by them, and it ended with Roman sitting down in the grass and watching Patton running around, making clouds of fireflies swarm and lift into the air, looking as if they aspired to join the stars far, far above. Then Patton breathlessly sat down next to him and they watched the glowing insects for a while, sitting in the silence before eventually getting up and beginning to get back.

They had cuddles, ice cream, and several episodes of (probably) Steven Universe waiting.
