"Maybe, 'I love you'?" ~ Logicality
TW: Angst. Like, a shit load of angst. And a break-up. I'm not sorry. Please don't hurt me.
"Yeah, Janus, we did not do this stuff at school!" Patton laughed, hearing his friend laugh through the speaker.
Patton and Janus hadn't been friends for very long but they quickly had become best friends. For the few months they had known each other, the pair had gone from awkward smiles to hugs, inside jokes, compliments, teasing and getting coffee together. Many people had mistaken the pair for boyfriends. That was a problem.
Because Patton already had a boyfriend.
And Logan hated it.
Every morning, Patton would call Janus. They'd talk for a whole hour before Patton finally replied to Logan's' 'Good morning, beautiful' text. And his text was always the same every day. It always said: Hi kiddo, gm. Srry for the late reply, calling Jan
Every night, Patton would message Janus late into the night. Logan was lucky to even get one singular reply to his, 'Goodnight, Patton. Do you think we could see each other tomorrow?'. It hurt him. He felt replaced and he didn't like that. He was always the second option. The second option if his friends, the second option of his brother, the second option of his parents, the second option of his teachers and he was once Patton's' first choice. And he wasn't anymore.
There was evidence now. Patton called Janus first when he found out his parents were getting a divorce. He hadn't told Logan until a week later. He had only told Logan as an afterthought. And Patton didn't even know how much that had hurt his boyfriend. It made Logan feel worthless, it made him feel useless. How could he love someone if they didn't trust him enough to comfort them?
It was never the right time when Logan called. It was always when Patton was eating dinner with his family, going swimming with friends, helping Virgil in a panic attack, advising Roman on what to wear or he had been texting Janus. But it was okay whenever Janus called. Once, Logan had worked so hard to take Patton out on a date to Patton's' favourite restaurant, an 80's diner. He had reserved Patton's' favourite booth, he was paying and Janus called in the middle of the conversation. And, as Patton always did when Janus called, his boyfriend picked up. Patton had texted Janus for the rest of the date, giggling at the inside jokes and things his friend must've said.
Patton didn't seem to have time to talk to Logan, or even listen. That was the biggest problem, especially in Logan's' eyes. How can you date someone who's so caught up with their best friend spamming them with gifs to listen to you trying to tell them that your father has cancer? How can you date someone who's too busy playing an online game with their best friend to bother paying attention to you when you tell them your father just died?
Logan didn't even want to remember what Patton had said when his boyfriend finally found out, after he eventually tuned into the conversation at the lunch table when he finished texting Janus. But, sadly, it's hard to forget a memory like that. Especially when the first thing Patton says is, "Goodness, Logan, why didn't you tell me?"
At the time, Logan really wanted to say, "I told you twice. You weren't listening." But he had just stayed silent.
And it was Janus Patton called after Logan finally had had enough.
It was around nine in the evening and Patton was preparing his living room for he and Janus because they'd be having a sleepover. The doorbell rang and Patton gasped, instantly thinking it was his best friend, coming around early. He scampered out of the lounge, giggling to himself and he threw open the door to a small disappointment.
"You look cosy," Logan commented, smiling fondly.
"Uh, hi, Lo!" Patton chirped, confused. "What's up?"
Logan turned around, to stare at the night sky. "The stars. May I come in?"
"I, uh, I guess?" Said Patton, slowly opening the door fully. Logan stepped inside, standing in the doorway when he stopped and a small frown creased his features.
"I thought you didn't like frogs?" He said slowly, looking Patton's' unfamiliar frog onesie up and down. "Don't you have a cat onesie?"
Patton nodded. "Yeah, I do but the frog one's a joke between me and Janus. I'm wearing it, we were gonna have a sleepover tonight, why are you here?" But Logan didn't answer. He just stared at Patton, face loose and eyes wide, flooding with hurt and shock. "Lo?" Patton asked again.
A single tear fell down Logan's' cheek. "You decided..." He said slowly, "To ignore our anniversary plans and not bother telling me, just so you could have a sleepover with your friend?"
Patton gasped, a hand flying to his mouth as he stared up at Logan. "That's today?"
"Y-You forgot?" Logan's' voice cracked. "You never forget!"
"Lolo, I'm so sorry-!" Patton began, moving to hug Logan but his boyfriend stepped back, looking furious. "Logie?" Whimpered Patton guiltily.
"I can't believe you!" Hissed Logan, tears free-falling down his face. "One simple sleepover is more important than me. Than us!"
Patton pulled back, stunned. "No, that's not true! It's just a sleepover-"
"So, this is just a sleepover but when I wanted to spend the night at Errich's' to help him study, it's not okay?" Logan snapped. "I see how it is!"
"Only because Errich flirts with you, Logie!" Cried Patton. "I got jealous-"
"Janus flirts with you," Logan answered shortly. "And you didn't consider the fact I could get jealous!"
Patton held out his hands pleadingly. "It's just a joke-"
Logan wasn't having any of it. "And it's just a joke when Errich flirts with me! He flirts with everyone! But you told me you didn't like it, so I told him to stop and we stopped hanging out and I lost a friend! How many times have I asked you to talk to Janus, just to let him know I was feeling uncomfortable?"
"Never-"
"16 times, Patton."
Patton stared at Logan, unaware of tears pouring down his own cheeks, as his boyfriend glared stonily. "16 times, I've pleaded with you and you were either too busy texting Janus or you forget the moment I stop talking about it." Logan deadpanned.
"I'm sorry-"
"No, you're guilty." Logan hissed. "You've hurt me and it makes you feel bad and you just wanna stop feeling bad." He arched his back and lifted his chin strongly. "You don't even know how much it hurt when you spent a whole date talking to your best friend, not me. No wonder Remy fucking asked me: Oh, hey, Logan! I was wondering, when did you and Patton break up? He seems to be dating that Janus kid!"
Patton sobbed hopelessly, his knees beginning to shiver beneath him.
Logan continued relentlessly. "I told you two times that my father died, Patton!" He shouted, making his boyfriend freeze. "You were too busy with fucking Janus every time! You only told me about your parents a week after you found out!"
"I didn't mean-"
"It killed me to find that out!" Logan shouted, voice cracking as he finally broke his cold posture. "It killed me to know that I was the second person you went to! I'm supposed to be your first, Patton. You were always mine."
Patton stepped back, deeper into the house. "'Were'?" He echoed.
Logan narrowed tear-filled eyes. "Were." He repeated coldly. Then he spun around on his heel, walking out of Patton's' house. "Goodbye, Patton. Enjoy your sleepover just as much as I'll enjoy my newly single life."
"No!" Wailed Patton, grabbing Logan's' wrist. He tripped, landing on his knees as he stared up at Logan, beggingly. "Where did this even come from, Logie?!"
"It's been building up for months, Patton," Logan replied quietly, not glancing back. "You're not my boyfriend anymore. Get off me."
And he slipped his hand easily from Patton's' loosening hold, leaving the freckled boy in tears and shock, kneeling on the ground, sagging in defeat. Logan began to walk away.
"Before you go," Patton whispered, voice cracking. "Was there something I could've said to make it all stop hurting?"
Logan didn't look back, but Patton knew he must've had the same look on his face as Patton did when Logan had told him to enjoy the sleepover.
"I don't know." Logan said in a whisper. "Maybe, 'I love you'?" And he walked away, leaving Patton alone at his front door.
