Roman grunted as soon as he hit the ground, the wind immediately knocked out of him. He gasped and coughed for breath.

He winced and propped himself up on his elbow, beside him lied Virgil, beat and tired. The beast roared ahead and the prince flinched, he scrambled to his feet and scooped the unconscious trait into his arms. “You really are a handful.” Roman huffed as he ran into the woods, the dark trait jostled violently in his arms.  Behind them, the beast followed close behind, tearing down trees and shrubs, Roman gritted his teeth and looked around for a safe hiding spot.

Somewhere where the beast couldn't reach.

Roman gasped as he spotted a nearby cave, it was small and a little tight.

He grinned. Perfect.

He peered over his shoulder, the beast was far away enough to buy him some time.

He ran towards the small cave and got to his knees, clutching Virgil to his chest. “Just please stay asleep for now, when you wake up you'll be safe. I love you dear, I really do love you, don't you ever forget that.” Roman whispered to him and pressed a kiss to his boyfriend's temple. He choked down a sob and placed Virgil into the small cave, he positioned him a comfortable position and tested it, he made sure he was far from the mouth of the cave, far from his reach, and sure enough he was.

He was safe.

Roman sighed. “Goodbye my love.” He smiled solemnly.

The beast roared behind him, Roman jumped to his feet and ran away from the cave, he looked into the woods and caught them beast a few feet away.

“Hey!” He called aloud and waved his arms. “Over here you ugly beast!” He yelled, his heart pounding painfully against his chest.

The beast faced him and in an instant began to chase the prince.

Roman huffed and glanced over at the cave. “Stay safe,” He breathed.

“Live for me.”
